Race 1 Michael Race Michelle Stairs F13 IDPL8104 01 December 6th 2013 My Political Spectrum However long there

has been mammals on this earth there has always been social structure amongst them. Whether they are animals fighting over dominance of the pact or early humans determining who will be the leader of the tribe. Politics in humanity has grown since the early days to structuring leaders in communities as kings, pharaohs or emperors. As long as there has been society there has been a social structure which has determined where people stand in society. Nowadays where western form of democracy governs over most of the civilized world a spectrum has been created to determine where you stand in your political ideologies. The political spectrum of left to right is a highly argued position in politics and elections. One party against another, always accusing the other of being too far to the right of the spectrum or too far to the left. There are many characteristics of both the left and the right although my personal characteristics lean more to the left. The left side of the political spectrum believes in redistribution of wealth, that government should promote secularism and internationalism. Their view on human nature is that it isnt just stagnant but that it is ever changing with the times. The right side however views that government should promote religious morality and should support traditional values. They prioritise liberty and view human nature as more intrinsic, that it is something you inherent.

Race 2 I believe in equal outcomes, that your social status or upbringing should not determine the rest of your life. The wealth in any country should not be dominated by the few so that the many must suffer. A true powerful nation has no elite billionaires and mass amounts of poverty. Peoples rights should rarely be infringed upon, though structure should be set to keep the population safe. A persons lifestyle choice and sexual orientation should not be determined by the government or by laws but left up to human nature. When considering the political spectrum and how it is laid out I view myself as leaning toward the left end. I am not entirely opposed to some aspects of the right sides view on the fact that sometimes government must intervene to keep the population safe and connected. Taxes are important because there are institutions such as schools, libraries, and public property that need to be properly maintained and looked after. Society cannot be anarchy with no one to govern them, but instead be guided by and strengthened by a government that listens and supports with very little personal intervention. The political spectrum quiz placed me on the left side of the spectrum. This makes sense to me because my upbringing on politics and social justices were left sided. I believe that every person has the right to marry who it is that they love no matter if it is hetero or homosexual. People no matter which race, religion or ethnicity are equal and that acceptance of each others differences is the only true way for there to be peace in a community. I would have placed myself left of the spectrum in the place not far enough to be communism because I do not believe everything should be distributed equally because no one would strive to work harder than their neighbour and would create a lazy unmotivated society.

Race 3 I believe that this was the product of the type of questions that the quiz asked. I rarely strongly disagreed with the questions it was asking but there were questions that I felt strongly agreeable with. With the type of questions and the audience that it is attended for i.e. students, than the quiz in itself is biased to have more left leaning results. Of course if this quiz were taken 50 years ago than it would be more right leaning, but with society and students nowadays I believe that the quiz itself is more geared towards making students believe they have left sided views. On the political spectrum graph of the Canadian parties I fell in closest to the New Democratic Party (NDP). This was a surprise to me because I always thought that I would be more of a Liberal. During all of the elections that I have paid attention to and followed I always hoped that a Liberal would win and would tell people that I had Liberal values. Even when I was old enough to vote for the first time during the Canadian provincial elections I voted Liberal because I thought that I followed their values. As it turns out I was essentially voting against the conservatives who I knew I did not agree with instead of voting for the political party in which I have the most in common. The positions of the NDP that relates most to my opinion is their stance on health care. They believe that healthcare should be more accessible to Canadians which is something I truly believe. Someone no matter their social status or wealth should be able to have access to free health care because it is an essential right as humans. Creating new jobs is also vital to a countries success. You cannot country as a superpower if there are not enough jobs for everyone to make a stable living off of. In those respects I have very similar ideals with those of the NDP.

Race 4 Over the course of this assignment I have answered questions to myself on where I believe that I stand with my political ideologies and have answered questions on major issues of todays society. It has truly opened my eyes to what I believed was my stance on Canadian politics and on the stances of the major Canadian political parties. It has given me a better understanding of politics today and will forever change how I view my choices of when voting for the next leader of Canada.
