Message from Jamshyd N Godrej

Chairman, CII-Godrej GBC

Dear Friends

It is imperative for all of us in the Industry to pursue growth in an ecologically sustainable manner. Adhering to this fundamental principle will not only provide immense environmental benefits but also makes good business sense. Ten years back, when we started offering green advisory services from CII-Sohrabji Godrej Green Business Centre, our vision was that the Centre should facilitate India to emerge as one of the global leaders in green businesses. The Centre was created to provide leadership on varied subjects related to green. I am glad we have made significant strides in this direction. I am happy that Green Buildings took off in a manner where India is now well poised to play a leadership role. It is a matter of pride to see India stand tall amongst the countries pursuing Green Buildings. I personally believe that we now need to broaden the scope of Green Buildings to cover Green Habitats and look at all communities which would make it more inclusive. Pursuing the green path will benefit mankind and preserve the biodiversity of this planet. Building sector accounts for nearly 40 % the green house gas emissions that are responsible for the threat of global warming. Therefore this sector presents an excellent opportunity to significantly reduce carbon emission intensity by 20 per cent in the next 10 years, an opportunity which we should never let go. IGBC, with its new and broad vision to include habitats is well poised to add value and address environmental issues like extending the life of our Natural capital, preservation of threatened species, livable cities, sustainable transport, community living, green employment and above all facilitate in providing a better quality of life. To make all these happen would require leadership. IGBC has been fortunate to have Mr Padmanabhan, USAID, Dr Prem C Jain, Mr. ParasuRaman and several others in leading from the front. I would like to thank them for their continued involvement, guidance and providing direction to the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC). I would also like to thank the Chair, Vice-chair and active members of various local chapters for their passion and commitment. Forging partnerships with world-class institutes has always been a source of strength in building our expertise. We are working closely with various National & international organisations including World GBC, USDoE, USGBC, Green Building Council of Australia (GBCA), ASHRAE, BCA, WRI, WWF, ORNL, IAPMO, LBNL, RockeFeller Foundation, University of Salford and other Indian organisations like BEE, CEPT, CREDAI and others. These collaborations are providing us a unique opportunity to synergise and work towards a common goal of greening India. My aspiration is that IGBC should be seen as a global thought leader and an enabler for implementing green habitats in India and I am convinced that we are well poised to demonstrate such leadership. Best regards

Jamshyd N Godrej

Message from Dr Prem C Jain

Chairman, IGBC
Dear Friends
When we began our journey of ushering in the green building movement in India in 2001, our dream was to make India global leader in Green Buildings. Today, ten years later, we look back with gladness, that our journey has been fulfilling & exciting. India is today seen as one among the top 5 countries having a large green building footprint. Personally, this is heart-warming and gratifying to me, and I am sure to all my Hum-Rahees (fellow travellers). We hold our heads high and speak with pride that India has over 1.25 Billion sq.ft of green building footprint and 1,750 registered green building projects, positioning us amongst leading nations of the world. We have a great sense of emotional pride that more 300,000 homes in India have embraced the concept of Green Homes. Today the green rating systems, promoted by IGBC, have become National by choice and Global in performance. Indian Construction Industry is poised to grow by an order of magnitude in the next twenty years, with major thrust on housing. Therefore, IGBC focus is to address sustainable habitats in the coming years. With this in mind, the Executive Committee has re-drafted IGBC vision To enable a sustainable built environment for all and facilitate India to be one of the global leaders in sustainable built environment by 2025. I am personally charged up with our new vision. We all have to work shoulder to shoulder in translating this vision into a reality. Like most other pursuits with a longer perspective and horizon, this new vision will also unfold a plethora of challenges and opportunities alike. Few of the key strategies that would enable us in accomplishing this vision are: Include all communities in the green building agenda. Demonstrate model green building projects in atleast 100 villages Establish IGBC Student Chapters in 100 architectural colleges and equal number of engineering colleges accross the country Facilitate 500 indigenous product manufacturers to brand and market their products on basis of green building attributes Develop green building standards in areas where presently none exists. Ensure that IGBCs certification process and delivery mechanism is world-class and delivers complete customer delight Facilitate the establishment of R & D and material testing labs within India. Reach all sections of the stakeholders through the local chapters and address local aspirations

The student community has always been closest to my heart, and I treasure the 40 years of association as Visiting Faculty at School of Planning & Architecture, New Delhi. IGBC Students Chapters have great potential to instill the seed of green ideas in young minds and mould them into eco-sensitive citizens. The local chapters have a key role to play here. In the context of our declining landscapes which have an effect on our micro-climates, we are consciously promoting Green Landscape as another potential vehicle to address ecological issues and concerns. This holds a lot of promise and potential in the years to come. We have our task cut. The path ahead is indeed challenging and exciting. Our Vision of facilitating Indias leadership role in green buildings propels us to march ahead. May I take the liberty here of naming some of our Champions, I am personally proud to be associated with, and deeply grateful for their selfless contribution: Ajit Kumar Chordia, Amar Britto, Ashish Rakheja, B R Ajit, Bharat Kamat, Bhavesh Baldevbhai Shah, C N Raghavendran, Chandrashekar Hariharan, Col Sridharan, Gurmit Singh Arora, J R Tanti, Jayesh Hariyani, K Raman, Karan Grover, Kishore Khaitan, Lalit Kumar Jain, M Anand, M Raghu, N K Ranganath, Padmanabhan, Parasuraman, Poorva Keskar, Pradeep Bhargava, Rajesh B Lund, Ravi Raheja, S Raghupathy, S Srinivas, Sameer Sinha, Shakuntala Ghosh, Sharukh Mistry, Shekar Reddy, Syed Mohamed Beary, Thiagarajan, V Suresh, Vidur Bharadwaj and all our members for their whole-hearted support and cooperation. The strides made by the Council have been possible with the passion and commitment, and unstinted wholehearted support by our founding members, members of IGBC, supporting organizations, developers, builders and architectural community. We will not rest on our laurels and we will march ahead with a singular mission that IGBC Vision becomes a reality and India helps preserve all life forms on our beautiful Mother Earth. Regards

Dr Prem C Jain
