DECEMBER 2013!

Inside this
A Word From The Pastor! Ministry ! Spotlight ! Too Blessed! 1!

As the Christmas season approaches, we tend to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of the many seasonal activities and events. Our thoughts begin to shift toward gifts and giving. Our days are lled with marathon shopping trips, holiday parties, beautiful festive decorating, and endless hours of last minute gift wrapping those perfect gifts for everyone on our lists.!
!

3!

Although Christmas is a time of joy and worship, it becomes one of the most stressful times of the year, and causes us to lose focus on the gift and giver. Seldom, the unraveling of the many blessings God has bestowed befalls many of us. Our priorities are shued and Christmas becomes more of a retreat from reality than its true meaning.!

Bible Trivia! Photo of the Month!

God's greatest gift to us was his only son, Jesus. A gift given to all to pay for our sins. A gift that remains for us today because God foresaw our need. A gift of God's promise to each one of us. A gift that ensures us an eternal life.!
!

!

"Thanks be unto God for his unspeakable gift" " 2 Corinthians 9:15! Saints, the gift of Jesus was given to save us, to help us, and to heal us. Regardless of the many gifts we may receive this Christmas, they pale in comparison to God's true gift to us. There is no better gift than receiving Jesus. We are richly blessed with God's goodness.!
!

Get Connected! 5!

Therefore, I urge each one of us this Christmas season to keep our focus on Jesus. Recall the story of Jesus' birth in the manger, His death on the cross, and His rise from the dead. Share His many blessings with others. He will forever be in our hearts. And remember, the rst Christmas gift we ever received was Jesus Christ, the son of God.!

With the holiday season fast approaching, it is important that we keep in mind that which truly matters. During this time, people often spend time with family sitting around the table sharing meals and exchanging gifts with those they love. However, as Christians we ought to be attentive to the fact that there are those less fortunate. Those who will be unable to spend the holiday season spending time with their entire family and incapable of providing gifts for others. The Donald J. Bowman Angel Tree Ministry established for Canaan members by Deacon Bowman himself and now led by Dr. Nakishia Bailey, is a nationwide program which seeks to provide for children, who during the holiday season are without one or both of their parents due to incarceration. ! Each year the Angel Tree Ministry provides for these children and their families with the goal of giving them what they may lack during the holidays. Often these children are placed with extended family members or with caretakers. To ease the burden that is often presented by this situation, the Angel Tree Ministry furnishes each child with a gift and each family with a food basket. In doing so, this ministry allows parents not able to be with their children during the holidays to provide them with a gift and a holiday meal. And, while the ministry cares for each childs earthly needs they also hope that this may lead them to a place where they can nd nourishment for their spiritual needs as well. ! !"#$%&'%()*!$%!+,-!.!

Oh that men would give thanks to the Lord for His goodness, and for His wonderful " works to the children of men" " Psalms 107:8!

n my daily commute to and from the office, I often observe bumper stickers on cars.! Some are surly, others clever, and still others downright distasteful.! One bumper sticker I saw recently, however, gently challenged my heart about the way we engage life.! The sticker simply said, "Too blessed to complain."! ! As we ponder those words, a feeling of self"conviction!should overtake us.! Too often we find ourselves lamenting moments in

life that didn't go our way!or what we don't have!rather than focusing on the wonderful gifts our heavenly Father has already given us.! Reading that simple message should stir in us a renewed commitment to be more actively and intentionally grateful because our God has been so good to us in more ways than we could ever count.! Psalms 107 is a song that seeks to rectify thankless thinking.! The Psalmist makes a plea to hearts grown cold with ingratitude, repeating four times, "Oh, that men would

give thanks to the Lord for His goodness, and for His wonderful works to the children of men."! (verses 8, 15, 21, 31)! Even in the worst of times, we have much to be thankful for.! ! As we look forward to the upcoming holiday season...'count your blessings"name them one by one . . . count your blessings"see what God hath done'! May we learn to thank God for His goodness to us!!!

While this ministry receives the help of many corporate and community sponsors, it also needs help from you, the members of Canaan. Please be sure to pick up a childs wish from the tree on your way in or out of church. Wrapped gifts are going to be due by December 8th. Also, on December 15th the gifts and food baskets will be given to the children and their families. The main goal is to provide for at least 200 children and 150 families. Help to make this goal a reality and provide what you can. !

Dear Heavenly Father, So far today, I've done all right. I haven't gossiped or lost my temper. I haven't been greedy, grumpy, nasty or self"centered. I'm really happy about that so far. But in a few minutes I'm going to be getting out of this bed and then I'm going to need a lot of help. Thank you! Amen.!
