History
Wirescan AS is a limited liability company located (since september 2013) in Vinterbro in s county, 20 minutes southeast of Oslo, Norway. The company was established in the fall 2005 to industrialize and commercialize a unique technology developed by Institute for Energy Technology (IFE) in Halden, Norway. IFE had identified the need for better cable diagnostic tools in nuclear power plants, and in the light of this they developed the LIRA technology. The broad applicability of the new technology was evident and Wirescan started in 2006 a three year development program, adapting LIRA to needs in the oil & gas industry. The project was sponsored by StatoilHydro, Shell UK and The Research Council of Norway. Wirescan started to offer commercial services based on the initial product release late 2006, and equipment delivery started in 2008. Over the past five years the company has positioned itself in the growing market for cable fault finding, condition monitoring and diagnostic. Wirescans mission is to provide innovative cable diagnostic tools enabling cable operators to reduce cable repair cost and extend life time of installed cables.

Cable Fault Location Services

General approach The objective of Asset Services is to ensure fault-free operations and to minimize the need for fault recovery. Thats also the case for cable grids or connections. If a failure occurs, its essential to quickly locate cable faults in the most accurate manner possible. Although the cables are highly developed, there are sometimes failures in cable networks. Even properly installed cables can face progressive degradation due to harsh environmental conditions such as overheating, excessive moisture, corrosive environments, mechanical stress and aging of the insulation. To help minimize consequential damages, Wirescan offers trained staff and effective equipment. Combined with other inspection tools, Wirescan's Cable Fault Location Services performed with LIRA Technology, provides the grid operator with a wear-free and comprehensive fault location methodology enabling the shortest possible recovery time. LIRA can detect:

degradations due to temperature, bends, scratches, corrosion, water intrusion, mechanical impacts, fatigue, cable sections with water trees, etc. insulation material degradation. cable joints e.g. between different cable types.

In case of mechanical impact on cables, LIRA measurements will be performed also to evaluate the severity of any damage on the cable system. This ensures maximum operational reliability. Of course, all measured data will be stored like a fingerprint for future use e.g. for introduction of condition based maintenance (CBM), based on regular assessments or even online condition monitoring. Your benefits at a glance

With LIRA Cable Fault Locations Services, the grid operator can minimize the recovery time and establish promptly and effectively the necessary corrective measures. LIRA offers fault location with the best accuracy compared with alternative technologies. Degradations can be assessed precisely and by that corrective actions can be planned in advance. LIRA can save significant costs for fault recovery due to shorter repair time. Historical cable reports provide an early warning system for potential faults. LIRA is a wear-free location methodology with only 5V white noise.

Cable Condition Assessment Services

General approach The objective is to identify degradations in the cables before serious failures increase the risk for outages. The condition assessment performed with LIRA technology, together with other inspection tools, will provide the grid operator more comprehensive data of cables under harsh environmental and operational conditions. This will enable the grid operator to consider cable condition monitoring data as a part for optimisation of operation, asset services and optimal utilisation of standby service capacity.

The recorded measurements can be stored as reference information (fingerprints) for later comparison with repeated measurements. The aging process or identification of new damage to the cable can thus be assessed and recorded. In case of any mechanical impact on cables during installation and operation or aging of the total grid, LIRA measurements will be performed to evaluate any damage or deteriorating effect on the single asset.

Recorded measurement data and reports are stored in the Data Base. Statistics from the Data Base are used to decide the repetition frequency for cable condition assessment measurements. This is of significant benefit in terms of quality of supply and ensures maximum reliability. Actionable input for asset management plans and maintenance strategy developments. Enables high availability at reduced total cost of ownership. Improved knowledge base enables reduced emergency repairs. Valuable input for network operation based on cable condition information. Additionally, consequence and necessary corrective action caused by accidental mechanical impact can be assessed more accurately by performing LIRA measurements to assess if the dielectric properties are changed.

Cable Quality Assurance Services

Fault-free operations require highest quality and respectively quality control during manufacturing and installation. The highest cable-specific requirements on quality measurements are set by ISO 13628-5, design and operation of Subsea Umbilicals. Measurements are required for the following steps:

At Cable Manufacturer: - components acceptance test - condition control At Umbilical Manufacturer: - post umbilical manufacture - condition control - umbilical final acceptance test (FAT) - condition control At Loadout to Installation Vessel: - pre loadout test - post loadout test Transport & Installation: - integrity monitoring during lay Post Installation - condition control Trenching & Rockdumping: - pre & post condition control Pre Connection (connection is typically performed some time after installation): - condition control Post Connection: - condition control

During Operation: - monitoring - regular condition control

Our Cable Quality Assurance Services performed with LIRA Technology will ensure highest quality from the first moment, as LIRA can detect all deteriorations and their severity which might have been induced during manufacturing and installation. All measurements data will be stored like a fingerprint for future use e.g. for introduction of condition based maintenance (CMB) based on regular assessments for even online condition monitoring. Today operators focus on securing superior technology for cable condition monitoring and fault finding. Consequence and necessary corrective action caused by accidental mechanical impact can be assessed more accurately by performing LIRA measurements to see if the dielectric properties are changed.

Here a Service Contract for monitoring of cables secures the best possible service assuring availability of staff and spares as well as short response times. Cables with no indications are immediately signed off with a standard report prepared on site. Cables showing suspicious features are further analyzed at Wirescans offices. The result of the carried out assessments will be evaluated and combined in a report of recommendations for short- and mid-term measures including required materials. Experts opinion on operational risk based on expected remaining life time under consideration of future maintenance scenarios can be given on request. Cable monitoring contracts thus minimize the operational risk to a calculable factor and it can easily be extended to other asset clusters of the power grid.

Nuclear Power Plants

The assessment of the condition of low-voltage instrumentation, control, and power cables in nuclear power plants (NPP's) is of increasing importance as plants age and lifetime is extended. Furthermore, as new reactors are being constructed, effective in-situ condition monitoring (CM) techniques to follow cable condition indicators from the beginning, can be valuable for cable lifetime management.

At NPP's two basic types of thermal and radiation aging of cables are of concern: bulk (global) aging, where the degradation is distributed over the cable length, and local aging (hot spots), where a localized heat or radiation source, such as a hot pipe, is close to the cable tray or conduit. Such local adverse environmental stressors can cause excessive aging in the exposed sections of a cable that could significantly shorten its effective service life and cause unexpected early failures. LIRA is a non-destructive, full length and in-situ CM technique with the capabilities of:

Electrical assessment of nuclear cables used in the field to determine the current condition of installed cables over the entire length: global aging and hot spot assessment. Predict Remaining Useful Life (RUL), including the establishment of acceptance criteria and correlation of physical cable properties to electrical properties. Correlate condition indicators of cables near the end of life with accident (DBE) survivability. Investigate new cables and perform fingerprint reference measurement, e.g. input to Asset Management. Detect degradations due to temperature, radiation, corrosion, water intrusion, scratches, bends, mechanical impacts, fatigue, water trees, etc.
