Management Skills
Management skills are the secret tools in the hands of any manager. They are the special abilities that are different in different individuals. Some of these skills are taught during training but the level at which they are utilized optimally are based on the manager. Management is a challenging job. It re uires certain skills to accomplish such a challenge. Thus! essential skills which every manager needs for doing a better management are called as Managerial Skills. "ccording to #rofessor Daniel Katz! there are three managerial skills! viz.! 1. Conceptual Skills! $. Human Relations Skills! and %. Technical Skills. "ccording to #rof. &aniel 'atz! all managers re uire above three managerial skills. (owever! the degree of these skills re uired varies from levels of management and from an organization to organization.

The above diagram shows the management skills which are re uired by the managers during their job in the organization. The top level management department re uired more conceptual skills and less technical skills and the lower level department re uired less conceptual skills and more technical skills and most importantly the human skills are re uired e ually by the all three departments of management.

1. Conceptual Skills )onceptual skill is the ability to visualize the organization as a whole. It includes "nalytical! )reative and Initiative skills. It helps the manager to identify the causes of the problems and not the symptoms. It helps him to solve the problems for the benefit of the entire organization. It helps the manager to fi* goals for the whole organization and to plan for every situation. "ccording to #rof. &aniel 'atz! conceptual skills are mostly re uired by the top+level management because they spend more time in planning! organizing and problem solving.

2. Human Relations Skills


(uman relations skills are also called Interpersonal skills. It is an ability to work with people. It helps the managers to understand! communicate and work with others. It also helps the managers to lead! motivate and develop team spirit. (uman relations skills are re uired by all managers at all levels of management. This is so! since all managers have to interact and work with people.

3. Technical Skills
" technical skill is the ability to perform the given job. Technical skills help the managers to use different machines and tools. It also helps them to use various procedures and techni ues. The low+level managers re uire more technical skills. This is because they are in charge of the actual operations. "part from #rof. &aniel 'atz,s three managerial skills! a manager also needs -re uires. following additional managerial skills which are given below.

. Communication Skills

)ommunication skills are re uired e ually at all three levels of management. " manager must be able to communicate the plans and policies to the workers. Similarly! he must listen and solve the problems of the workers. (e must encourage a free+flow of communication in the organization.

!. "#ministrati$e Skills
"dministrative skills are re uired at the top+level management. The top+level managers should know how to make plans and policies. They should also know how to get the work done. They should be able to co+ordinate different activities of the organization. They should also be able to control the full organization.

%. &ea#ership Skills
/eadership skill is the ability to influence human behavior. " manager re uires leadership skills to motivate the workers. These skills help the Manager to get the work done through the workers.

'. (ro)lem Sol$ing*Design Skills


#roblem solving skills are also called as Design skills. " manager should know how to identify a problem. (e should also possess an ability to find a best solution for solving any specific problem. This re uires intelligence! e*perience and up+to+date knowledge of the latest developments.

+. Decision Making Skills


&ecision+making skills are re uired at all levels of management. (owever! it is re uired more at the top+level of management. " manager must be able to take uick and correct decisions. (e must also be able to implement his decision wisely. The success or failure of a manager depends upon the correctness of his decisions.
