1.0.0 INTRODUCTION-
Instrumentaton panes can provde a convenent means of pacng
nstrumentaton n a ocazed area to provde readng of mutpe
nstruments at one pace. These nstrument panes can have ony a coupe
nstruments up to hundreds of ndcatons on one pane. The nstruments
on the pane can be eectrcay drven nstruments or some type of meter
drven off of a partcuar force ke a pressure gauge.
To nsta an nstrument pane and nsta the gauges nto a pane, the
tranee w have to be abe to nterpret system drawngs and nstrument
physca specfcatons and requrements to propery assembe the
nstrument pane.
Instruments can be of varous szes and dmensons. Aso how nstruments
can be mounted as n fush mounted or surface mounted. Another
parameter of the nstrument that must be ooked at s where the
nstrument connecton ponts are ocated.
Aong wth the varabes that were mentoned n the prevous paragraphs,
there w be many varabes that w have to be consdered when
constructng an nstrument pane. Ths text w cover the areas that need
addressng and the specfcatons that make a reabe nstrument pane.
Pane-Mounted Instruments - Modue 12213 5
The frst step n fabrcatng or orderng the nstrument pane s dentfyng
what nstrumentaton s to be put on the pane. In order to do ths the
techncan may have to dentfy the nstrumentaton on engneerng
drawngs. A revew of drawngs w be covered.
2.0.0 PIPING AND INSTRUMENTATION DIAGRAMS-
A Ppng and Instrumentaton Dagram (P&ID) depcts the functona ayout
of a fud system and ts ppng, vaves, nstrumentaton, etc. as ceary and
accuratey as possbe. It s accurate to the extent that a components are
connected to each other as shown n reaton to fow path orentaton. A
P&ID does not attempt to represent the actua physca ayout of
equpment. A vave whch may appear to be rght at the dscharge of a
pump, can physcay be ocated qute some dstance from the pump and
on another eevaton (foor). Many tmes, however, a P&ID w use a
broken ne encrcng a group of equpment to ndcate that t s a n one
budng, or a on a "skd". Another name commony used for P&ID's s
"bubbe dagram" due to the use of the round symbo for ocators and
symbos.
2.1.0 P&ID SYMBOLOGY
A ppng and nstrumentaton dagram depcts a components of a
partcuar system ncudng ppe szes, fange szes, vave szes, fow
drecton, and references to other reated dagrams. Rather than try to
pctoray ncude a the vaves, ppng, nstruments, and equpment n a
fud system, a P&ID uses standardzed symbos to represent these tems.
In the past, each engneerng frm mght have ts own set of symbos but
over the ast 1015 years ndustry standards (ANSI, ISA, ASME, etc.) have
been deveoped and adopted to standardze the symboogy n use. These
standards are apped to a types of prnts, however, P&ID's st seem to
be sub|ect to the whms of the desgner, more so than other prnts. For ths
reason, the egend s very mportant for ppng and nstrumentaton
dagrams.
The fgures beow ntroduce some of the standard symbos used to
represent the varous nstruments whch mght appear on a P&ID. The
symbos used n ths secton, and many others, are found n ISA standard
55.1 Instrument Symbos and Identfcaton. &igure 1 sts the standard
symbos used for the sgna and process connecton nes used n ths
secton.
Other genera symbos used n nstrument oop dagrams are the baoon

vave types. &igure 4 shows vave actuator symbos.
Some of the symbos used have very defnte meanngs. For nstance n
temperature measurement some of the speca symboogy are ustrated

Combnng these symbos together, measurement channes and contro
channes can be depcted. &igure ( s a temperature measurement
channe. Ths channe uses an RTD as the temperature sensng eement.
The RTD s encosed n a thermowe that s connected drecty to a
temperature transmtter (TT). The transmtter senses the resstance of the
temperature sensng eement, converts the resstance to an eectronc
sgna, ether current or votage, and transmts ths sgna to a
temperature recorder (TR), that s ocated on the boer contro board.
In &igure ), symbos are used to show that the temperature detector (TE),
a thermocoupe, s encosed n a thermowe. The emf produced by the
thermocoupe s sensed by a mvot to current transducer, mV/I. The
transducer ampfes emf, converts t to a current sgna and transmts ths
sgna to a temperature ndcator (TI), and a temperature recorder (TR),
mounted on the man contro pane.

somewhat standardzed, but uncommon codes shoud be referenced to the
egend. A format commony used s ustrated n #a,le 1%
3.0.0 DETERMINING THE INSTRUMENT-
As stated earer n the modues, the nstrument to be mounted to the
pane coud be an eectroncs-drven nstrument or an nstrument that s
drven off of a specfc force ke pneumatcs or water pressure comng
from a pump dscharge. The two types of nstruments for mountng and
connectng to the transmtter can be ooked at ndependenty.
The frst type of nstrument we w dscuss s the nstrument that uses a
system force to drve the nstrument.
One of the frst thngs to determne s where the pane s to be ocated.
Once the ocaton s determned, the ambent condtons of the area n
whch the pane w go shoud be ooked at. Before nstang or seectng a
bourdon tube pressure gauge, t must be verfed that the gauge w be
operated wth ts specfed mts. Operatng a gauge outsde of ts mts
coud cause damage to a gauge persona n|ury or property damage.
Another verfcaton check s to ensure the gauge that s to be nstaed s
capabe of measurng the pressure (or medum) that w be apped to t. A
genera rue s that the gauge's fu scae defecton shoud be at east
twce the norma operatng pressure and the maxmum operatng pressure
shoud not exceed 75% of fu scae range. For exampe, an Aschroft 41/2
1017 A 1/4 NPT wth a range of 0 to 200 ps shoud have a norma
operatng pressure of ess than 100 ps and the maxmum pressure to the
gauge shoud be ess than 150 ps.

3.1.0 INSTALLING THE INSTRUMENTS
The actua ocaton on the pane face where the nstrument s to be
nstaed s usuay decded by engneerng or operatons, athough ths
may not aways be the case. The tranee at tmes may be responsbe for
the desgn and ayout of an nstrument pane. When performng ths task,
the nstaer w have to arrange the pane n a ogca and convenent
ayout. The nstruments shoud be paced n a poston that w et the
nstrument be easy read and aow access for operaton of the nstrument
pane controers and ad|ustments. Other consderatons that w have to
be consdered ncude: are there any other devces that w be ocated
behnd the pane? What type of nput, output, and suppy connectons are
there and where are they ocated? The connectons can sometmes be
ocated on the front or rear, the top or bottom, and n some nstances
there may be some on the sde. Figure 10 shows two pressure
nstruments.
Instrument Tranee Task Modue 12213 14
Fgure 10. Pressure Instruments
3.1.1 Accessbty
The workng space and entrance to the work area must be consdered
when ocatng a oca nstrument pane. Enough space must be eft around
a pane so that norma mantenance and producton actvtes can be
performed.
The ocaton of a oca nstrument pane shoud aow as much protecton
as possbe from overhead ppng and possbe damage from dust, drt, or
process contamnaton.
WARNING! An nstrument s usuay nstaed n a pane when the contro
pane s de-energzed. Ths stuaton s of concern when pane
modfcatons or addtons are to be done. There s concern
because eectrca nterference and vbraton from power toos
can cause probems wth senstve contro equpment and
aarms. Eectrca shock to the nstaer s aso a concern when
workng wth energzed equpment. If at a possbe, the pane
shoud be tagged out. Care must aso be taken whe workng
around equpment to ensure meta chps do not fa nto the
equpment.
3.1.2 Safety
Some genera safety rues to foow when ocatng an nstrument pane
are:
Do not ocate the pane n a congested area.
Do not ocate the pane where t coud be damaged by mobe
equpment.
Do not ocate the pane where the pane operator woud be standng
on a wet surface.
Try to ocate the pane n sght of the equpment the operator s
controng; for exampe, a vave.
Pane-Mounted Instruments - Modue 12213 15
Do not ocate the pane on or over drans, conduts, ppng, or ducts.
Do not nsta a pane wthn 3-1/2" of a handra.
3.2.0 DEVELOPING INSTRUMENT TEMPLATE
Pane nstruments vary n sze, shape, and weght. They requre dfferent
consderatons as to pane poston and addtona support. Most
nstrument manufacturers provde detaed nstructons for mountng an
nstrument and supportng brackets or racks.
Many pane nstruments come wth a rack assemby permanenty affxed
to the pane. Ths assemby permts easy remova and access to the
nstrument tsef.
The foowng sectons w expan nstang an nstrument n a
predetermned ocaton n an exstng pane usng a typca manufacturer's
nstaaton nstructons. Ths ncudes:
Seectng the proper toos
Layng out the measurements
Instang the nstrument
3.2.1 Seectng the Proper Toos
A good understandng of basc hand and power toos s necessary to seect
the toos to do a |ob safey and correcty. A copy of the manufacturer's
nstaaton nstructons shoud aso be obtaned to ad n proper too
seecton for a specfc |ob. &igure 11 shows a manufacturer's nstaaton

3.3.0 BASIC FABRICATION TOOLS
Proper too seecton s mportant to lay out or fabricate nstrument
panes. Lay out toos are used to measure specfc szes and shapes. The
toos needed to fabrcate parts vary wth each |ob.
The measurement toos needed to ay out the measurements for a pane
cutout are a scrber, stee rue, or stee square. A hammer and center
punch are aso necessary to mark the hoes for drng.
The power toos requred to cut a pane for nstrument nstaaton are an
eectrc dr and a recprocatng saw. The dr s used to cut startng hoes
for the saw bade. The recprocatng saw s used to make the cutout n the
pane. A fat meta fe may aso be needed to cean up any rough spots or
meta burrs from the cuttng process.
3.3.1 Common Lay Out Toos
Many dfferent toos can be used to ay out and measure nstrument
panes. Some common ay out toos are:
Scrbers
Stee rues
Stee squares
Combnaton sets
Dvders
Prck punches
Center punches
Straghtedges
Scrbers - Scrbers are used to mark ay out nes by scratchng them on
meta surfaces. They are made from too stee and are avaabe n
dfferent engths. A scrber s ground to a neede pont and s used wth a
hande or hoder. The pont of some scrbers s bent at a 90-degree ange
to mark the nsde of cyndrca ob|ects. An o stone shoud be used to
keep a scrber pont sharp.
NOTE: Do not carry or pace a scrber nto cothes pockets uness the
pont of the scrber s adequatey covered.

3.4.0 COMMON INSTRUMENT PANEL FABRICATION TOOLS
Most nstrument panes are constructed of stee or aumnum sheets.
Modfcaton or fabrcaton of these panes requres the use of toos that
w cut ths type of matera. The most common too used to fabrcate
nstrument panes s a hoe saw.
3.4.1 Hydrauc Knockout Punches
Hydrauc knockout punches are powered by a hydrauc pump. These
punches use the same des and punches as manua knockout punches.
Hydrauc knockout punches are usuay used to make arge hoes and to
punch through thck meta sheetng. Figure 20 shows handoperated and
foot-operated hydrauc knockout drves.

3.5.0 LAY OUT THE MEASUREMENTS
Lay out s usuay the frst step performed when nstang an nstrument. It
ncudes measurng and markng nes, centers, or crces on the pane to
show the sze and shape of the hoe needed to mount the nstrument.
Layng out a pane for nstrument nstaaton requred checkng the
manufacturers nstaaton nstructons and preparng a tempate.
3.6.0 CHECKING MANUFACTURERS INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
Manufacturers nstaaton nstructons provde nformaton requred to ay
out the measurements when nstang an nstrument n a pane.
&igure 21 shows an exampe of manufacturers nstaaton nstructons.
The nstaaton nstructons for an nstrument show the exact cutout sze
requred n a pane to mount an nstrument. In Fgure 21 these dmensons
are 8 nches wde by 10-1/8 nches ong. Fgure 21 aso shows that the
nstrument can be mounted n a 1/16 - to 5/8-nch thck pane. Ths fgure
shows three mountng brackets are provded wth the nstrument. For ths
exampe nstaaton, the exstng contro pane s 3/16-nch aumnum.
NOTE: Be sure doors w cose propery.
NOTE: Be sure pane s envronmentay secure.
NOTE: Most pane-mounted nstruments come wth necessary
mountng.
NOTE: Be aware of area cassfcatons of encosures (pane).

3.7.0 PREPARING A TEMPLATE
Pane-Mounted Instruments - Modue 12213 23
A tempate s a fu-sze pattern used n nstrument nstaaton to show
where hoes shoud be punched or dred. They are aso used to show
where cuts or bends shoud be made n a pane. Tempates are made from
sketches or drawngs. They are usuay made of heavy paper, cardboard,
or ght meta and are then paced on the matera to be cut or dred.
Foow these steps to prepare a tempate for the exampe nstaaton.
Step # Usng a meta square and a penc, draw an 8-1/2 nch by 10-1/8
nch rectange on a pece of cardboard or paper.

3.8.0 CUTTING THE CONTROL PANEL FACE TO MOUNT AN
INSTRUMENT
Once the poston of an nstrument to be mounted and a the
specfcatons are met, ensurng that cearances for hookups and
connectons w be proper, mount the nstrument to the pane for a fush
mounted nstrument and usng a tempate that w be deveoped usng the
procedure dscussed earer.
The frst thng that must be done s pace the tempate over the pane face
and secure t to the pane wth tape. Usng a scrbe, trace the outne of
the tempate as shown n &igure 23. Do not cut the tape hodng the
tempate. The nes can be connected wth the scrbe after the tempate s

removed.
Remove the tempate from the pane. Now retrace the nes on the pane
from the tempate usng the scrber and meta rue.
The sze of the bades the recprocatng saw w use determnes the sze of
hoe to be dred n the pane. These hoes must be arge enough for the
saw bade to be fuy nserted nto the hoe. Ths aows the saw to be hed
fat aganst the pane surface. The saw manufacturer usuay provdes a
gude expanng the bade needed to cut a partcuar matera. The saw
bade heght n ths exampe s 1/4 nch. Ths w requre a 5/16-nch hoe.
Measure out 3/16-nch n both drectons aong the scrbed nes from the
