INTRODUCTION
We were informed by Ms Ang that we will be having a site visit to Symphony Hills in Cyberjaya on 29 November 2013 and we are required to do a report for the site visit which include the knowledge of measurement, construction technology and building material which we have learnt in semester 1. This trip is leaded by Ms Ang Fuey Lin, our measurement lecturer on the day. Before we go to the site, she reminded us to bring along a safety helmet during the site visit as any danger might have happened without wearing a safety helmet. The day has come. My classmate and I gathered at the bus stop before 8a.m. to avoid any delay to the site. We supposed to depart at 8a.m. but due to some issues arise, we have to delay our schedule and depart on 8.30a.m by taking Taylors bus. However, there were 4 people who carpool and went to the site by themselves as the seats of the bus has reached the limit amount of students it can takes. The journey took us 1 hour to reach the destination. All of us were excited because it was the first time we went to a construction site. Then, we followed Ms Ang to go into the office to take a look of the construction plan and model which is done by the Architect. After that, we walked to the construction site. The people who leaded us to the site were Mr Omar and Mr Zu. Both of them are working for the site. Mr Omar who was wearing a blue shirt is the Senior Project Manager whereas Mr Zu, who was wearing a blue shirt is an engineer. They introduced themselves at first and gave us a short briefing before we entered into the construction site.

We went into the site carefully and stepped on the ground carefully as the bad weather on the previous day made the ground damp. Throughout the site visit, Mr Omar and Mr Zu guided us and gave us a lot of information about the construction site. They are good and friendly in the way they answered our questions. Besides, Ms Ang also made further explanation for us when we ask any questions. Around 10.30a.m, we leave the site and say thank you to Mr Omar and Mr Zu as the effort they made. Before going back, we took a group photo which showed every faces of my classmates. Overall, the site visit was fun and we gained a lot of knowledge.

On 29 November 2013, we went to Symphony Hills in Cyberjaya for a site visit. It was leaded by Ms Ang Fuey Lin, our measurement lecturer. On that day, my classmates and I gathered in Taylors bus stop at 8a.m. We supposed to depart sharp on eight oclock to avoid any delay but due to some issue, we depart at 8.30a.m. and reached our destination at around 9.30a.m. in Cyberjaya. The name of our site is Symphony Hill. It is a developing area at which there are buildings. The buildings are constructed modernly. Firstly, Ms Ang directed us into the office. In the office, there are plans of the building and models showing the interior design of the building. By looking at the model, we have a thought on how is the building going to look like when its done.

After that , we walked to the site. Mr Omar, a senior project manager who is wearing the blue shirt introduce himself. He also took the chance to give us a short briefing before entering the site. The one with the black shirt is Mr Zu, an engineer.

Then, we entered into the site. The condition of the site is damp due to the bad weather on the previous day. The sand is loose and subject to movement. That is why we formed a line and walked slowly and carefully to access into the site. The type of construction is residential. There are temporary roads on the site for the accessibility into the site.

The first thing I saw at the main entrance of the site were stacks of brick, blocks, pile and timber that being put aside. It forms a temporary work for material storage on the site. The bricks and blocks are stacked in stable piles on a level and they are covered with polythene sheets to avoid moisture. Scalffolding are found at the site. The putlog scallfold is partly supported by the building and the independent scalffold stands alone and does not rely on the building for support. They are usually made of tubular steel and tubular aluminium alloy. Hydraulic gidding

machines/excavators are on the site for excavation and digging purposes. Besides, I found cementing truck for carrying cement for the use on site, crane machine to lift

and lower materials, lorries for transporting material to the site and cement-making machine.

As we walked further inside, Mr Zu told us that the foundation used in this particular area is pad footing which the dimension is 5m x 3m x 1m. Foundation is important of a building because it is the base on which a building rest. The concrete used is Grade 30 and the drain is precast installed. Reinforcement bars which made from steel are arranged accordingly in the excavated area before the concrete is being poured. The rebar is to help to hold the concrete in a compressed state. It is cast into the concrete to carry the tensile loads which refer to the load of the building. The diagonal shaped reinforcement bars (2T16) is build in some part of the trench to withstand heavier load. The foundation used in the other area is raft foundation. Raft foundation covers the whole area of building and usually extend beyond it. It is best suited for use on soft natural ground.

The stacks of cement bags are arranged nicely on the site itself. The reason of arranging them closely together in the stack is to reduce the circulation of air as much as possible. Besides, cement bags should not be stacked more than 10 bags high to avoid lumping. Cement is a powdery substance made by calcining lime and clay, mixed with water to form mortar or mixed with aggregatess and water to make concrete.

When I go inside the building through the staircase, I realised there are few storages to store the materials such as paint. They are put in the storage so that the workers can easily get it when they need it. Material storage must be vulnerability to

theft. Paint is a type of finishes which is spread over a surface and dries to leave a thin decorative or protective coating to the wall and ceiling.

As I walked further, I saw timber formworks. Formwork is a temporary molds which wet concrete can be poured to shape the concrete. It gives shape to parts of the building such as beam and column. Formwork are usually made of timber and steel but timber formworks are used in this site as it is lighter and cheaper in its material cost as compared to steel formwork. Besides, timber is a renewable resource and It has a degree of natural durability.

As I took a look at the building, I saw soffit for the floor slab. Soffit is constructed underside the floor slab. Based on the knowledge of measurement, I knew that soffit is a type of formwork. I also get to know what is a stiffener. Stiffener is constructed between the beam to make a certain part of a building stiffer. It doesnt need a formwork but the concrete is poured together with the concrete for beam.

We went upstairs and there is an open area which is a pre-construction place for balcony.

Column is an upright pillar, can be cylindrical or rectangular made of stone or concrete, supporting beams or arches on which the upper parts of walls or ceilings rest. Reinforcements bars are constructed in the column to carry compressive load.

The reinforcement bars are stack together. A reinforcement bar is steel in the form of bar. It is strong, can create tensile strength to the concrete and it can be bent into any required shape. To bend it, a bar bending machine shall be used. We went there right on time where we had the chance to look at the workers on how they bend the steel bars by using a bar bending machine.

Mr Zu shows us the stirrup and the the bend of the stirrup is 24d where the d is based on the diameter of the stirrup. Some other shape of bars can also be found on the ground and definitely there have different uses that use in different part of the building. Steel is a heavy material. Its durable and have a longer life span. It can be used repetitively.

In addition, a canteen is found inside the building where food is cook and prepared for the workers at that place. The canteen can be considered as a temporary work because it is set up temporary to sell food for the workers during the construction process only. The canteen brings convenience to the workers who work on the site as they can get the food easily instead of going out from the site to buy food during lunch time.

Other than that, drainage system is important in a construction site. It must be well drained so that dirty water can flow through the drainage out of the site. There are two types of drainage I found on the site. The first one is drainage by using piping and the another one is by using concrete-constructed drainage.

One last thing I saw when I was walking to the exit of the site was water tank. Water tank is use to store water on the site for the cleaning of site and other purposes.

It took us one hour to go around the site. Everyone seemed tired after the site visit as the hot day made everyone sweat. Eventhough it was tired, but it is worth it after all as I learnt something. It was a great experience for me and I would like to visit to other construction sites in the future.

CONCLUSION
In a nutshell, going for a site visit was a new experience for me. It gave me a thought on what are we going to learn and what should we do after we graduate. Throughout the site visit, I gained knowledge of construction industries and it makes me feel like I am part of the industries now. However, it is a long way to go until my graduation day to become a professional Quantity Survey and I still have a lot to learn. A good beginning makes a good ending, I hope things will go well in my following years in my degree of QS. Furthermore, I would like to say a million thank you to all the lecturers who have made so much effort for teaching us in this semester. I am looking forward to learn new things in the following semesters of my degree in QS.
