Newman English 101: Rhetoric 13 September 2013 Statement of Scope for the Annotated Bibliography Work has always been our motivation to become something better in life as the result is something deeply desired. However, on some cases large amounts of manual labor result in barely any pay as some immigrant workers in America have come to discover. In a land of promise and freedom, immigrants take low paying jobs most Americans wouldnt wake to be paid less than minimum wage and barely be able to support a steady life. As the cost of living increases in America the rate of minimum wage or even less stays the same, making it nearly impossible for immigrants to maintain a steady life with basic necessities, especially since these jobs dont offer health care or insurance. Though, some may argue that immigrants are paid enough to meet their means of sustaining a life of necessities and few luxuries, but the low wages these immigrants receive are barely enough to help them escape the poverty they have fallen into. This essay will explore the world of unskilled Latino workers that come to America in search of work and economic stability. This will also underline the importance of Latino immigrants in the economy because they do help increase the revenue as more hands are available to do more work than before. Though immigrants are able to work, the jobs they acquire dont offer HealthCare benefits or insurance making elder members of families dependent on the workers of the family. I will examine how the wages these people receive arent enough to help them overcome poverty and leave them to government aid. This essay will project the economic advantages and disadvantages of Latino immigrants in the American society. This selected bibliography has sources that highlight the troubles Latino immigrants encounter on a daily basis such as shortages of money due to the low wages they receive and this leads to millions of American money being spent on financial aid for immigrants. Essays by Batalova, Conlin and Bernstein explain the importance of raising the wages for immigrants so they can pay their needs. The essays written by Camarota and the New York Times Magazine, speak about how immigrants are going to be destined to lower pay because they are unskilled and high school dropouts so the money they make will never amount to much. Finally, we have Salamon weighing the pros and cons of housing immigrants in America as it raises our national revenue but keeping immigrants maintained costs millions of dollars a year. In total, these essays will demonstrate a further understanding of low wages Latino immigrants receive and how these money issues lead to more problems down the road.

As Latin American immigrants continue to make up most of the population of unskilled workers, they are going to be apt to lower pay because they don't have the proper training or even documentation. More Latin American immigrants have been coming to America now more than the past three decades, so as they search for economic stability and HealthCare, they are going find that with these low paying jobs that isn't going to come without a cost. Especially if elder people are in the family, they are going to be more dependent on those who are working, thus the paychecks these workers receive will not be able to cover simple expenses. Camarota, Steven A. "Tired & Poor." National Review 53: n. pag. eLibrary. Web. 15 Sept. 2013. The problem at hand is that unskilled workers are already the lowest paid among the spectrum and dropping out of high school takes five percent off the wage anyways. Some argue that since these low paid workers don't make enough money, they should have lower prices for things they need to buy as well. While thirty-one percent of all Mexican households use welfare and pay very little taxes the American economy makes up for the little money these people receive. Though these immigrants make low pay, the cost of financing legal and illegal immigrants sometimes out-weighs the pros of having unskilled workers. Conlin, Michelle, and Aaron Bernstein. "Cover Story: Working...And Poor." Business Week: n. pag. eLibrary. Web. 16 Sept. 2013. The American government looks to curb the influx of

unskilled Mexican immigrants to the work force to have an end to low paying jobs. But, international companies tend to try to pay the lowest they can and have many workers at once, so the jobs the immigrants are going to be looking for are going to be to the easiest job and giving some pay. As these immigrants get these jobs, they arent going to get a pension or HealthCare which furthers their money issues. New York Times Magazine. eLibrary. Web. 16 Sept. 2013. Latino immigrants typically had dropped out of high school to help support their families, however their downfall with this is that when they go searching for jobs in America they are only going to be able to make $24,500 annually. Americans argue that Latino immigrants have been taking jobs away from native-born Americans as an influx of Californians left in the mid-1990's to search for work else where because immigrants were taking their jobs, that apparently they weren't going to work anyway. Latino immigration has created more revenue for America, but Americans tend to believe that they are a financial burden. Salamon, Jeff. "Everything You Ever Wanted To Know About Illegal Immigration (But Didn't Know Who To Ask)." Texas Monthly: n. pag. eLibrary. Web. 16 Sept. 2013. Many Latino immigrants that come to America in search of jobs usually need government aid, which typically costs the U.S. millions of dollars to house these people who could make up to just $25,000 per year. The wages these people receive are lower than minimum wage and often paid under the table to companies they cross the border for to go to everyday. Though immigration does cost millions of dollars to support each year, the pros of immigrations can occasionally weigh out the cons as more money is produced from more goods.
