Gemara ClassTopic: Sugya Pidyon Shevuyin Captivity
The goal of this activity is:
To look at different challenges that people in captivity encounter and identify character
traits that promote survival in difficult times
Instructions:
1. Select 5-6 articles and/or video clips from the Edmodo folder labeled Captives
2. Read/watch the article/video clip note the challenge(s) they faced and character traits
they relied on for survival
3. For each article/video clip that you watch fill out a Response sheet.
4. Choose one article/ video clip that resonated with you and write a short reflection on how
you can apply some of the traits/attitudes of the person into your own life as you
approach challenges and how it would make a difference.
5. Each time you work on your anchor activity, fill out the self-reflection checklist.
6. Due date: The day of our Gemara final

The goal of this activity is:
To look at investigate different people in Jewish history that were taken captive and
identify the halachic issues and the appropriate communal response
Instructions:
1. Using what we learned in class and 3-6 additional sources (available in Edmodo folder
under title Hostages) make a list of 3 historical events of captives that had similar
responses
2. Choose one of the following formats to demonstrate these reactions of the communities
-A song that bespeaks of the communal challenge and response (6-8 stansas with chorus)
- A newspaper article/interview of a communal member or released hostage
-Storybird describing the challenging decision (10-15 pages)
3. Each time you work on this activity please fill out a Self-Reflection Checklist.
4. Due date: The day of our Gemara final
