Lesson Sequence:
Whole-class discussion of how we organize data; includes reference to charts and graphs seen
throughout the school.
Introduction of new terminology/vocabulary.
Teacher will display chart and introduce the activity; we will create a pictograph today using data
gathered about personal attributes of classmates.
Students return to desk for small group activity; within small groups, children will collect
information about each student's hair type (wavy or straight) using techniques discussed in
previous lesson.
Once gathered, one student will go up to the board and place their pictures in the pictograph
within the appropriate column.
After all classmates have attached their pictures in the pictograph, we will review the graph and
the resulting differences between wavy and straight hair.
Adaptation could include creating additional pictographs using other attributes of students,
individuals creating own pictograph, bringing in an example of a pictograph or other graph type,
or interpretting an example of a pictograph. The group project will also provide a benefit for ESL
students as they will be combined in heterogeneous groups.

Reflections:
Within this activity, students will be interacting with the teacher and their classmates through oral
conversation. Students will be introduced to the various forms in which data is displayed and will
learn new vocabulary terms relating to data modeling. The teacher will be assessing students
based on their whole-group and small-group responses and through brief individual conferences.
In addition, worksheets could be handed to students to complete. These worksheets could have a
pictograph at the top and a series of questions at the bottom about interpretting the pictograph
displayed.
