Jankiel(orYankel)YaakovWiernik(inHebrew: born1889,BialaPodlaska,Polanddied1972, RishonLezion,Israel)[1]wasaPolishJewishHolocaust survivorwhowasaninfluentialfigureintheTreblinka exterminationcampuprisingofAugust1943.Following hisescapeduringtheuprising,hepublishedhisaccountof histimeinthecamptitled:AYearinTreblinka,ofhis experiencesandeyewitnesstestimonyofthatdeathcamp wherehewitnessedthetragiclossofanywherefrom 700,000to1,400,000[2]innocentlives.Wiernikalso testifiedintheLudwigFischer'strialin1947,Eichmann Trialin1961,andwaspresentattheopeningofthe TreblinkaMemorialin1964.AfterWorldWarII,Wiernik immigratedtoSwedenandlatermovedtoIsraelwherehe diedin1972attheageof83.

WiernikwastransportedtoTreblinkaonAugust23,1942fromWarsawGhetto.[4]Onhisarrival,Wiernik wasselectedtoworkratherthanbeimmediatelykilled.Wiernik'sfirstjobrequiredhimtodragcorpsesfrom thegaschamberstomassgraves.Wienikwastraumatizedbyhisexperiences,writing'Itoftenhappenedthat anarmoralegfelloffwhenwetiedstrapsaroundtheminordertodragthebodiesaway.'[5]However,he wasalsoencouragedbytheoccasionalscenesofbraveresistancetohiscaptors.[6]Inchapter8,hedescribes seeinganakedwomanescapetheclutchesoftheguardsandleapoveratenfoothighbarbedwirefence unscathed.WhenaccostedbyaUkrainianguardontheotherside,shewrestledhismachinegunoutofhis graspandshotseveralguardsbeforebeingkilledherself. WhenWiernik'sprofessionasacarpenterwasdiscovered,hewasputtoworkconstructingvariouscamp structuresincludingadditionalgaschambers.Givenhisskills,Wiernikwasnotsubjectedtothesame treatmentotherswereandhenolongerhadtohandledeadbodies.Wiernikattributeshissurvivaltohiswork buildingstructuresneededinthecamp.Giventheshortageofskilledconstructionworkers,Wiernikmoved betweenthetwodivisionsofthecampfrequently.Asaresult,Wiernikbecameanimportantfigure, communicatingbetweenthecampswhentherevoltwasbeingplanned.

WiernikescapedTreblinkaduringtherevoltoftheprisonerson August2,1943,havingkilledacampguardwithanaxeafter beingshotbytheguardandthebulletbeingstoppedbyhis clothing.AfterescapingTreblinka,WiernikarrivedinWarsaw hidinginfreighttrain.HehidinWarsaw,secretedinitiallybythe PolishfamilyofKrzywoszewski,hisformeremployers,whogot forhimfalseKennkartedocumentbythenameofKowalczyk,and thenbyawomannamedBukowska.Next,Wiernikassumedthe nameofJanSmarzyski.Hemadecontactwithmembersof Jewishundergroundworkinginthe'aryan'partofWarsawand CounterfeitKennkarteofJankiel wasrecognisedbythemasavaluableeyewitnessofthe WiernikundertheassumednameofJan exterminationproceduresinTreblinka.Hewaspersuadedinlate Smarzyski. 1943towriteAYearinTreblinkainspiteofhisinitialreluctance (Wiernikhadlittleeducationandwasnotaskilledwriter).He continuedtoliveinWarsaw(Wiernik's'aryan'appearanceallowedhimtomoverelativelyfreely)andfought therein1944inWarsawUprisingintheArmiaLudowa.[3][4]AftertheendofWorldWarII,Wiernikinitially remainedinPoland(in1947hetestifiedinthetrialofLudwigFischer),[4]thenimmigratedtoSwedenand afterwardstothenewlyfoundedstateofIsrael.Inthe1950s,WiernikbuiltamodeloftheTreblinkacamp whichisdisplayedintheGhettoFighters'HousemuseuminIsrael.In1961WierniktestifiedintheEichmann trialinIsrael.
