    Jankiel Wiernik was a Polish-Jewish Holocaust survivor who was imprisoned in the Treblinka extermination camp during World War 2. He witnessed between 700,000 to 1.4 million people killed there. He published an account of his experiences called "A Year in Treblinka" and testified at several Nazi trials after the war. Wiernik experienced PTSD from his time in the camp but went on to immigrate to Sweden and later Israel, where he helped build a model of Treblinka and continued educating others about the Holocaust until his death in 1972.

WiernikwastransportedtoTreblinkaonAugust23,1942fromWarsawGhetto.[4]Onhisarrival,Wiernik wasselectedtoworkratherthanbeimmediatelykilled.Wiernik'sfirstjobrequiredhimtodragcorpsesfrom thegaschamberstomassgraves.Wienikwastraumatizedbyhisexperiences,writing'Itoftenhappenedthat anarmoralegfelloffwhenwetiedstrapsaroundtheminordertodragthebodiesaway.'[5]However,he wasalsoencouragedbytheoccasionalscenesofbraveresistancetohiscaptors.[6]Inchapter8,hedescribes seeinganakedwomanescapetheclutchesoftheguardsandleapoveratenfoothighbarbedwirefence unscathed.WhenaccostedbyaUkrainianguardontheotherside,shewrestledhismachinegunoutofhis graspandshotseveralguardsbeforebeingkilledherself.     WiernikescapedTreblinkaduringtherevoltoftheprisonerson August2,1943,havingkilledacampguardwithanaxeafter beingshotbytheguardandthebulletbeingstoppedbyhis clothing.AfterescapingTreblinka,WiernikarrivedinWarsaw hidinginfreighttrain.HehidinWarsaw,secretedinitiallybythe PolishfamilyofKrzywoszewski,hisformeremployers,whogot forhimfalseKennkartedocumentbythenameofKowalczyk,and thenbyawomannamedBukowska.Next,Wiernikassumedthe nameofJanSmarzyski.Hemadecontactwithmembersof Jewishundergroundworkinginthe'aryan'partofWarsawand CounterfeitKennkarteofJankiel wasrecognisedbythemasavaluableeyewitnessofthe WiernikundertheassumednameofJan exterminationproceduresinTreblinka.Hewaspersuadedinlate Smarzyski. 1943towriteAYearinTreblinkainspiteofhisinitialreluctance (Wiernikhadlittleeducationandwasnotaskilledwriter).He continuedtoliveinWarsaw(Wiernik's'aryan'appearanceallowedhimtomoverelativelyfreely)andfought therein1944inWarsawUprisingintheArmiaLudowa.[3][4]AftertheendofWorldWarII,Wiernikinitially remainedinPoland(in1947hetestifiedinthetrialofLudwigFischer),[4]thenimmigratedtoSwedenand afterwardstothenewlyfoundedstateofIsrael.Inthe1950s,WiernikbuiltamodeloftheTreblinkacamp whichisdisplayedintheGhettoFighters'HousemuseuminIsrael.In1961WierniktestifiedintheEichmann trialinIsrael.
