With Highway 1 closed from Calgary to Brooks, over 150 stranded drivers were brought to the Strathmore Civic Centre for shelter on Dec. 2. Winds reached 80 km/h, dropping visibility to less than 10 metres with roughly 30 centimeters of snow; many cars and transport trucks were trapped in ditches, stuck in impassable snow drafts, or wrecked in collisions. We are expecting another 90 to 100 vehicles, said Linda Nelson, deputy director of emergency management for Strathmore on Tuesday afternoon. Most of them have probably been on the highway overnight. From what Ive been told, a plow is in the westbound lane east of town, and theyve got miles and miles of vehicles behind them that theyre kind of convoying in right now. Many drivers were advised to stop at the nearest safe location and wait for the storm to pass a wait that was thought to be anywhere from 12 to 24 hours. RCMP were on the scene: however, snow removal equipment could not be brought due to the severely unsafe conditions. Weve had people come from Brooks and further. Most of them are coming from the east, Im not sure how many are coming from the west, Nelson said. Some people went to hotels, when they had free rooms. We did check around for people, and tried to prioritize people with children or disabilities. Food, drinks and sleeping mats were available to those who were rescued to the Civic Centre. The shelter opened at 3 p.m. on Dec. 2, and continued to provide food, drinks, and sleeping mats well into the following day. Fireghters not only assisted at the Civic Centre, but were also rescuing people stranded in their vehicles off the highway in -30 degree weather (with wind-chill). Those guys have been absolutely amazing, absolutely awesome, Nelson said. The Strathmore Fire Department and the Strathmore Rural Fire Department wow. Jan. 2011 was the last time Strathmore experienced a storm of this nature, Nelson mentioned. Continued from Page 2

Major storm brings Southern Alberta to a hault

Continued from Page 1 It was probably similar to this. I think the weather this time is worse, she said. Multiple vehicle collisions were reported in the Cluny area, approximately 15 km west of Gleichen, due to the heavy drifting and icy road conditions. A six-vehicle collision with three semi tractor-trailer units was reported, followed by a secondary collision involving three vehicles, in which two people suffered injuries. Other semi tractor-trailer accidents occurred at the Cluny Hill top and at Crowfoot Creek. Ive heard that theyre trying to get the highways open, but we dont know whats going to happen, Nelson said. Everyones warm and comfortable here, so as long as we need to, well stay open and keep people fed until they can go home.

Ready for an emergency

SHANNON LEClAIR Times Reporter Travelling along the highways during the winter months can be treacherous at times. Thats why its always smart to keep an emergency kit in your car. It is advisable when youre travelling the roads in Alberta to have something in the back. After being involved in a number of incidents out on the highway, I have never met anybody prepared. They should have a kit in their vehicle, said Strathmore Fire Department Chief Muir Furzer. Some of the main items every kit should include are a blanket, high-energy foods like trail mix or energy bars, water, a small shovel, a votive candle and a ashlight. Extra clothes are also always an essential item in an emergency kit. Having your cell phone charged and working can also be life saving if caught in an emergency situation. A traveler can make their kit as elaborate as they want. If youre going to be stranded on the highway for a couple of hours and you want to be entertained somehow maybe throw a deck of cards in there, or a crib board just so they can pass the time while theyre sitting on the edge of the road, said Furzer. Dozens of people were stranded after a severe winter storm struck this past weekend, forcing the closures of many Alberta highways, including here in Strathmore. It was eerily similar to the winter storm in January 2011. It was surprising during that storm how many people were dressed to go to Mexico. They walk out of their house with their light clothes on because they know theyre going into an airport terminal, said Furzer. Its supposed to be warm, and then theyre getting onto an airplane thats warm and then they end up in Mexico where its nice and warm but they got stranded along the highway with a pair of sandals on and cotton clothes. So dress appropriately, The worst time for winter storms in Alberta seems to be from the end of December until the middle of February, but that doesnt mean you should wait a few more weeks to put a kit in your car. A good kit can be helpful year round if you end up stranded on the highway, so its important to pack one up and always keep it in your car. That way, if you ever need it, your kit is always there and ready.

Wheatland Quilters and Strathmore and District Christmas Hamper Society join forces
MANNY EVERETT Times Contributor The Wheatland Quilters started their organization in March of 2012 and already have 25 members who are interested in quilting and fellowshipping twice a month in Strathmore. The group decided to take on a project to help the Strathmore and District Christmas Hamper Society and together made 110 pillowcases. These pillowcases will be added to the hampers as gifts for the teenagers and younger kids. Wendy Nielsen, chair off the Wheatland Quilters group said that the main focus of the group is bringing people together to learn from each other, fellowship with like-minded people, practice and learn new techniques but also to give back to the county and the community. The group has done charity work since its inception in a variety of ways: they make charity quilts for cancer patients in the county through Victoria quilts, make burp pads and receiving blankets for Growing Opportunities, and preemie quilts for local hospitals, just to name a few of their projects. The group also holds a quilt rafe during Heritage Days in Strathmore, and held their rst quilt show during the long weekend in August, as well, to show off some of their talent and promote their group. There is always room for more to join. The group meets every second and fourth Thursday of the month at the Strathmore Quonset on the Ag grounds. They also occasionally meet for Sewing Sundays to nish larger projects. Nielsen said that they also have guest speakers to showcase particular techniques and that they learn from one another in the group as well. For those who wish to donate to the group for their charity projects, 100 per cent cotton and annel are always a welcomed necessity. For more information on the group contact can be made with Nielsen at (403) 901-3756 or at wheatlandquilters@gmail.com Jean Buthfer (Secretary for the Hamper Society) graciously accepted the pillowcases on behalf of the Society and said that they are still looking for gifts for teenagers this year. People are generous to the Society in giving through different organizations and schools and businesses. We appreciate all the help we get from the many volunteers who put in numerous hours sorting and packing food and distributing the hampers over the years, said Buthfer. In 2012 the Society gave out 200 hampers, and the way the applications are pouring in they will exceed that number this year. Unfortunately the need never decreases. Collection points for food and toys are up around Strathmore and in the surrounding villages. Monetary donations can be mailed to The Strathmore & District Christmas Hamper Society c/o Strathmore FCSS (680 Westchester Rd. Strathmore, Alta. T1P 1J1). Volunteers are always needed to sort and pack food and toys. Please phone Strathmore FCSS at (403) 934-9090, to register.

Walking to better health

SHANNON LEClAIR Times Reporter Winter can be a tough time to want to get outdoors for a stroll, but it is also a time of year when many people are more inactive and could use that extra motivation to get out of the house. UWALK - Walk With Us is a new initiative developed by the faculty of physical education and recreation and is funded by the government of Alberta. The idea behind the program is to empower people to be active through walking. The Marigold Library System has brought the program to Strathmore via the Strathmore Municipal Library. Marigold has provided each library with 12 pedometers that you can borrow with your library card, said Carmen Erison, assistant director of library services at the Strathmore Municipal Library. The pedometer can be checked out from the library the same as a book. It has a barcode that is scanned to keep track of it and it may be signed out for three weeks at a time. The great part of this program is that you can also track your activity online at uwalk.ca or you can download a personal activity log, said Erison. On the website participants can track the number of steps they take in a day, stairs climbed and even compete against some of the other participants. Its said that the average healthy person takes 10,000 steps in one day. This time of year may be odd to begin promoting such a program but Erison said it may be because this is a time people are being less physically active. The library also plans to promote the program more in the spring and possibly come up with friendly challenges. I feel if you have a pedometer on you, youre more aware of how physically active you are and how many steps you are taking a day, said Erison. Its just a fun, active, healthy program that the library and the Marigold Library System is promoting. Another great thing about Uwalk, said Erison, is that participants are awarded with fun badges that can help inspire and motivate you to walk as many steps as you can in a day. Next time youre in the library, be sure to ask your librarian about the pedometer.

National Child Day at Parent Link Craft fair at the library

The Strathmore Municipal Library held its first Christmas Craft Fair on Nov. 23. The fair coincided, unintentionally, with the book sale, both of which were successful. Left: Dennis Groenhof started building birdhouses as a hobby and has decided to try and turn a profit from his hobby. Right: Monica Kapoor (l) and Laci Wichert were selling their wares at the craft sale. The Hand In Hand Parent Link Centre held a teddy bear picnic for children ages two to six on National Child Day, Nov. 20. The day was to remember the 1959 signing by Canada of the United Nations Declaration of the Rights of the Child and the adoption of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child in 1989. Its also to foster the growth of children to the full potential. Top: Apphia Olubowale (l-r) Priya Klayh and Dream Kunkel made crafts during National Child Day. Bottom: Zoe Bassen, 3, pushes a teddy bear on the swing.

Capsule Comments
More people are starting to use their cell phones as a reminder to take their medication. Just be sure the reminder is a sound that you will associate with taking your meds. If hightech phones arent for you, try using a digital kitchen timer. Some allow for reminders of up to 12 hours later. Carry it in your pocket or purse. Head injuries account for 9-19% of all winter sports activities. When you are buying a protective helmet for your sport, be sure it is CSA-approved. A good helmet can considerably reduce the risk of head injury. Heart attacks occur more often in cold weather. The cold causes the blood vessels to constrict causing the blood pressure to rise putting a strain on the heart which is trying so hard to keep our body warm. Also age and exercise (like shovelling that driveway) can also contribute to the heart attack risk. Good food abounds at this time of year and to avoid gaining excess pounds, good self-discipline is in order. When sitting down to a holiday meal, try this: fill half your plate with vegetables, a quarter with protein and a quarter with starch. Actually, this is a good rule for eating all year round! All the pharmacists and the wonderful staff of our pharmacy extend to you our very best wishes for a happy and safe holiday season.

Political associations reform for new boundaries

SHARON MCLEAY Times Contributor The federal electoral boundary realignments will set Wheatland County in the new riding of Bow River. Wheatland County is currently part of the Crowfoot riding, with our current elected Member of Parliament Kevin Sorenson. He remains as our representative in federal parliament until the election in 2015. The new boundary designations are effective after May 2014 and will be in place for the 2015 election. The federal electoral boundaries are reviewed every 10 years after completion of population census. Guidelines for redistribution of boundaries is based on area populations divided by a formula called the electoral quotient, which gives a representative amount of seats for each province. The aim is to have each district containing approximately the same amount of eligible voters. A three-member commission is appointed for each province to further review the boundary divisions. Albertas commission members were Alberta Court of Appeal Justice Carole Conrad, now deceased Ed Eggerer, a former Airdrie Real estate agent and President of the Airdrie Rotary Club, and Donna Wilson an electoral administrator and electoral returns ofcer. Each commission looks at factors like community interests or identity, historical boundaries and considers geographic size of the riding as well. The names for new ridings were derived through regional and provincial characteristics; the use of names of people was avoided, unless there was a long standing namewww.videogallery association with a parstrathmore.formovies.com ticular area. When tentative boundaries are designated, a draft is presented for public consultation. Public open houses were held in 2012. The commission was impressed with the quality and thoughtfulness of the presentations at the public hearings, said Alberta Chair, Justice Carole Conrad. The input was invaluable. It gave us information and local insight, not otherwise readily available. Communication between the commission and the public is an example of democracy in action. There will be 338 seats for the House of Commons, with British Columbia and Alberta gaining six new seats each: Ontario has 15 more seats and Quebec has three. The Canadian territories gained no new seats. The Bow River electoral division is a jigsaw puzzle-shaped area including major population centres of Fort Macleod and Claresholm to the south, Rocky View County to the eastern side of the City of Calgary city limits, runs north on the east side of Airdrie to the Red Deer River running down below Drumheller, and includes all of Wheatland County and parts of Vulcan County to the east including Brooks and Bassano. For a detailed map and description see, www. federal-redistribution.ca Local political parties are beginning to reform their political party electoral district associations to fall in line with the new boundaries. The party membership will appoint boards who will look within their association to nd new candidates to put forward as representatives in the next federal election. The Conservative Party held an initial reformation meeting at the Travelodge on Nov. 27, to elect initial board members for the Bow River area. Eighteen of a possible 30 people put their names forward to serve on the board. More meetings and working details for the association will be discussed in upcoming months.

Calling for proposals

FROM THE OffICES Of KEVIN SORENSON

Kevin Sorenson, Member of Parliament for Crowfoot, is encouraging local businesses to consider selling their goods and services to the Government of Canada by responding to the Build in Canada Innovation Program (BCIP) Call for Proposals. Our governments top priority is creating jobs, growth and long-term prosperity, says Sorenson. Our job is to fuel the entrepreneurial spirit in Canada, and this new Call for Proposals will help kick-start Canadian businesses and get their innovative products and services from the lab to the marketplace. The BCIP was launched in 2010 as a pilot program to connect Canadian companies with federal departments and agencies that have a need for innovative products and services. By selling to the federal government, businesses

can demonstrate the value of their products and services, and potentially generate future sales to non-government customers in Canada, and around the world. To build on the early success of this pilot program, Economic Action Plan 2012 allocated additional funding for three years, starting in 2013. As of 2016, $40 million will be permanently dedicated to the BCIP annually. The fourth Call for Proposals, which includes a military component, is currently available on Buyandsell.gc.ca/tenders. Suppliers have until Jan. Helping hand 7, 2014, to submit their proposals. FortisAlbera took time to help install the welcome sign for the Celebration of I encourage all local large and small rms in Lights at the Strathmore Ag Grounds Nov. 20. The week that was

PAT FULE Fule for Thought On the weekend, I was hunkered down waiting for Deb to come home, and with a bit of chill in the house, turned on the gas replace. As it warmed the room, I began to ip channels, when what should appear on the TV, but the SHAW replace channel! I was thrilled, what better way to warm the house than two replaces! Now, this I found humorous, and had to call Breanne. Bree, come look at what weve got now! She came up, looked at me and the TV, then laughingly said, youre a dope, Dad! Just then the Shaw Fireplace guys arm came in and he added a log, and stoked the re! It was as if he knew our house was cold! (I wonder why they had him wear a plaid shirt is he a lumberjack?) Hmmmmm, it makes you think, doesnt it? Now, I nd out Bree posted a photo of me on Facebook to humiliate me!! If youre a guy and your wife has ever hosted a hosted a Ladies Open House for various products, youll know why I escaped my house on Sunday. To be a guy, and to lose your man cave to an aromatherapy display is tragic. Before I left, I put on Christmas songs on all the TVs (thanks Shaw). The problem with that, is if you get a crappy Christmas song, youre trapped all the rooms had Yule tunes! I asked a few of the ladies if theyd rather have The Walking Dead Season 4 Marathon on the TVs, but they declined! Huh, I wonder why? So, with about 40 ladies coming and going in our house, the smells of candles, displays, the shiny jewelry; some pals and I made a run for it! It was good to be in a beverage establishment where we could watch NFL games and hoist a couple. You can imagine our disgust when the biggest TV screen was set to the Food Channel! The Food Channel - who sets a 100 screen to that channel on a Sunday? So, with a bit of manly pleading, we got that one set to an actual sport not curling, thats for sure! Although I would have like to have seen Ron Burgundy talk about curling! With NFL football on, we were set for a while. Our waitress was a very pleasant young lady who happened to have large dark glasses, and was wearing a t-shirt with horizontal red and white stripes. It didnt take us long to start commenting to her that she looked like Waldo. She took it well, and said shed heard that a lot today! It doesnt take much to amuse me, because when she did go on a break and we got a new waitress, it gave me a chance to call out, wheres Waldo? Ah, stuff like that never gets old for me! We chuckled, the new waitress tolerated, and we ordered wings. A few of us decided to go back to the house, as the show was nearly done there. Big mistake! First of all, the noise level from the ladies was huge! Laughing, talking, and bargaining, took us by surprise! We even thought of another escape. It was too late, we were spotted! We now had to chat and see what our wives were buying, hear why, and then we got to help carry out display equipment. I knew we should have had that last drink a lot slower! However, I did get offered a sample of a little Heaven on Earth. It was bacon avored chocolate bacon! I took a piece it was amazing! Who knew youd be able to get two great food group items in one bacon and chocolate! Thanks Sam Debbie better have ordered some (sorry, new Doc)! So, Im now writing to you from school Tuesday. I got stuck entering the staff parking lot, and a few colleagues helped free me from the ice-covered drift. Using Reverse and Drive, with their pushing, we were making headway. One pal named Don tapped my windshield to tell me which way to turn the wheel. At that moment from a windshield chip, a huge crack spread up and across! When I was free, I showed Don what happened, but I couldnt stop laughing! I thought about the cost of a new windshield, saw Don later, and said it wouldve been cheaper to call AMA! Oh well, those are the risks of being a good Samaritan. Speaking of that, I wanted to thank all the people who helped in the blizzard. On Monday night, over 135 people were rescued and brought to the Civic Centre for the night. Mats for sleeping, drinks and meals were provided, and a warm place to rest. Ill never be able to thank you without missing some, but I hope its okay to try. Thank you to: the town administration and staff, the re departments, police, Town Public Works, pastors, SHS administration, tow truck drivers, bus drivers youre all heroes to me. I know how exhausted you must be, but you helped save peoples lives. I apologize if I missed some of you, but thanks and God bless! LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

To be or not to be a Hockey Mom

To the Editor Theres a misconception about hockey players; some say they are rough, like to ght, arrogant and have bad attitudes; they are the typical dumb jock. This may be true of a few bad apples but I have not met one yet. I have been a Hockey Mom for over 10 years and I have experienced watching some of the nicest boys grow up. Some have made it to the WHL, have gone off to University or college, have jobs, help coach teams, or ref hockey. They are all great young adults that have promising futures and a love of Canadas favourite game, hockey! Hockey players are taught at a young age that this sport is about team work, discipline, passion, dedication, hard work, respect, responsibility, compassion; they learn patience and build character. They rely on support from the community, parents, grandparents, coaches, managers, teachers and friends. Being a hockey Mom you learn quickly that within the walls of the arena there is another community. You never raise a hockey player alone. There is the rink staff, coaches, parents and referees. Hockey players are always surrounded by supportive adults. If youre a hockey Mom you may have experienced that moment when you have to rush out of one arena to make it another arena an hour away, on less than ideal road conditions. As you rush out the door with the hockey bags, lunch to go, and the baby. You leave the parking lot to then realize you forgot a child at the rink you panic and tear back to the arena to nd your forgotten child at the side of another hockey mom, eating a st full of candy. Some say hockey is expensive but its all in perspective, so are many other sports. They say its time consuming and you have to drive miles, endure cold weather, icy roads, and early mornings, stinky equipment, expensive hotels, miss birthday parties, and eat take out. If I had the opportunity to go back 10 years and do it again, I would in a heartbeat! I cherish the family time we have experienced while driving miles to another arena, staying in those over priced hotels while watching our kids play and swim with their teammates, the funny stories the kids shared and hearing about the best and worst play of the day. The friendships made and all the conversations we have had while drinking the bitter rink coffee. That little hockey player is going to meet his favourite mentor, his best friend, his worst enemy. He isnt always going to make the best hockey team (or perhaps the team you think he should be on). They wont win all their games or always be the MVP. You will accidently sit by that obnoxious fan who yells in the stands, buy countless 50/50 tickets, chew your ngers to the bone during evaluations, volunteer hours of your time on committees organizing events and tournaments, and 10 years later you will sit down and reect on all the proud moments you had watching your little hockey player(s) grow up and youre going to be grateful you had all those little moments together. You will also appreciate the coaches, managers, rink staff, referees and other supportive hockey Moms, because now that your little hockey player is ready for the real world you will realize that he has had the best positive inuences and has learned how to make quick, smart decisions. He is going to make mistakes, be disappointed, get roughed up and knocked down, but that kid, that hockey player has learned valuable life skills. In life, youre going to get knocked down. A hockey player will pick himself up because he has already learned how to deal with lifes misconducts and off sides. Michelle Bishop, Strathmore

Grade 11 and 12 Strathmore High School dance students are almost ready to show the public the dances they have been working so hard on.

Dancing with the light

SHANNON LEClAIR Times Reporter Each year the dance and drama classes put on one big performance and a number of smaller performances for the community. This year Paula Richardsons Grade 11 and 12 dance students are putting on a show called Dancing with the Light. There are approximately 16 dances that will happen over the course of the show, almost all of which are student choreographed. The idea behind the dance came when the boys in the class were inspired by a dance called Tron. The boys were quite interested in it. It involves an electric current wire that is attached to a suit, said Richardson. Richardson decided the class would see what different ways they could use light. Some of the dances are done behind a screen, underneath spotlights, and disco balls and even one with no light. All of the dance performances by Richardsons students have an element of student choreography behind them but in this show all but one dance are student created. This show is really student directed. In the past I have tried different things and it sort of depends on the strength of the students. This particular class is very creative and very driven, so I felt it would be more benecial to let them explore their creativity rather than me bringing someone in or me doing the choreography. I have just kind of let them come up with the ideas, said Richardson. This dance show is kind of unique in that I have a number of dances that have been choreographed by the guys. The guys are also making their own Tron suits, which is another unique aspect of the show. A friend of Richardsons husband worked with the boys on how to plan their suits and helped her nd a supplier of the material she would need. The guys are hand stitching about 50 feet of electric wire onto a sweat suit and they are doing it all themselves. Dancing with the Light will be held on the Strathmore High School stage on Dec. 16 at 7 p.m. Tickets are $10 each and can be purchased in advance by calling the school at 403-934-3135 or at the door.

Members needed
SHANNON LEClAIR Times Reporter Members are wanted for the new Downtown Design Review committee. Forming a committee is the next step, now that the Downtown Overlay District Bylaw was approved in September. The idea behind the committee is to review applications and provide recommendations made by the Approving Authority and council. Some of the things the committee will make recommendations on include exterior building material and design features, mix of land uses, public art, streetscaping including furniture, parking reductions and pedestrian access points. Members of the committee must be appointed by council. The committee is to have two council members, three Town of Strathmore administrative staff, a member from the Strathmore Regional Arts Collective and three members of the public. Those interested in being on the committee can contact the town for more information. OPEN HoUSE The Town of Strathmore is holding their annual Christmas Open House this Friday, Dec. 6. The event takes place in the council chambers from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. This is a great chance to meet and socialize with the mayor, council and administration.

REMEMBErING OUr rOOTS ~Jens

JOHN GODSMAN Times Contributor
Both Jens and Clara were born at Jutland, Denmark - Jens in the southern part in 1934, and Clara in the central part in 1938. They were only children when the war started, so they continued to live there and attend school. Similar to the U.K., there was conscription for males before they reached the age of 20, so Jens joined the army in 1954. He served for 12 months in the Horse Guard Regiment, before being transferred to an Armoured Car Division for the remaining four months. Jens and Clara met while attending Rodding Cultural College, in 1956. This college is the oldest of its type in Denmark. Jens immigrated to Canada in 1957, and took up residence in Cheadle whilst working as a farm labourer. He returned to Denmark in 1958 to attend Agricultural College. Meanwhile, Clara had gone to Sweden where she worked as a nanny for a year, before returning to Denmark to complete her early childhood teaching education. They were married in 1961, and moved to Canada in 1963, where they worked on a farm east of Strathmore for the summer, and worked at the turkey farm in Strathmore the next summer. This marriage produced four sons. Lars Peter lives in Calgary, and is a movie production manager and a licensed Realtor with CIR Realty in Calgary, like his father. Dan passed away at the age of 29. Markus is living in Brazil, where he and three others built a 2-mast schooner which Markus sails off the coast of Brazil, while studying for his MBA. Hans Andreas lives in New York, and works in investment banking. Jens and Clara now have six grandchildren. Jens became a trucker in 1965, and worked for ATCO Industries for the next eight years. He says he knows every back road in the

& Clara Lehmann

four western provinces as well as in the Northwest Territories, Yukon and Alaska! In 1986, Jens joined JonDor Realty as a realtor, and moved to CIR Realty in Calgary in 1992, where he still works today. Clara opened a daycare in Forest Lawn in 1968, which she operated for the next six years. In 1973, they purchased a 1/2 section at Orange Valley, south of Strathmore and west of Hwy 817, where they still live. In between, they purchased a 1/2 section at Cairnhill, but sold this in 1980. But, Clara missed the young children in a daycare, so became a teacher at the Strathmore and District Play School, where she worked for 27 years. This playschool started in the United Church basement, before moving to the west side of Westmount Elementary School. Both Jens and Clara have been, and are, very active at the Danish Church in Calgary since it was founded in 1964. They are founder members of Step One Housing in town. Jens organizes casino fundraisers for both the Danish Canadian Club and the Step One Housing organization. He is also a 40-year member of the Cheadle Lions Club. The main change theyve seen in Strathmore since they arrived 50 years ago is the population explosion, and improvement of services such as roads, schools, community facilities and communication. As many of my readers know, there used to be a CPR Supply Farm on the south side of Hwy 1, in Strathmore. Built in 1905, it was used to supply transcontinental trains with meat and fresh produce, for the dining cars. In 1982, Jens and Clara purchased the Heritage House, and moved it onto their land at Orange Valley, where they have restored it. What a wonderful old home this is, with antique doors, windows, brick replaces, etc.

Missy DSH Calico Female DOB Jan, 2009

Missy is a wonderful cat who was surrendered to us earlier this summer. There were concerns about her behavior towards children but with time and lots of careful socialization, we are happy to report that thus far Missy has shown zero aggression towards any one. We believe she may have had a bad encounter before coming to us and has since moved past that and is condent, healthy and happy. Her fur is as soft as satin and she loves to give cheek rubs. Missy is playful with catnip toys and cuddly at bedtime. She was fostered in a home with an 8yr old child, 2 dogs and other cats. She prefers to not be in the company of other cats but seems perfectly content around dogs. If you have any questions about Missy please email us today!

10th Anniversary
SHARON MCLEAY Times Contributor Larry and Darriel Olson are celebrating their 10th anniversary. It is not a marriage celebration, but a celebration of success in their family business, Olies Quick Lube. They rst opened their doors in October 2003. They moved from their original location in 2005, and are now at 38 Spruce Park Drive. When you are in something like this you are basically married to it, joked Darriel Olson. We arent a franchise. We saw a need in the community and talked to some of the local mechanics and when the opportunity came around, we thought why not? Olsen said customers have commented that having a local shop saves them a trip into Calgary. She said customers like the convenience of not needing an appointment, dropping in anytime Monday to Friday, between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m., to get a quick oil change and vehicle checkup. Olies works on a rst come-rst served basis and services include oil and lter changes, engine greasing, uid checks and top up, air lter checks and replacements, wiper blade replacement and tire pressure checks. They use quality brand products and dont talk customers into buying unnecessary services. They also personalize service for customers, meeting individual needs. One example of personalized service, provided on request, is allowing customers to supply their own oil and lters to use in the oil change service. However, they dont do tire work, uid ushes or mechanical work. If they note something that needs repair, they let the customers know and give their honest opinion. They will refer customers to a good local mechanic. When we started, going by what mechanics have told us, regular oil maintenance is the cheapest thing you can do for your vehicle. It extends the vehicles life, otherwise the impurities get in and wear your motor down, said Olson. Olsons have also mastered managing a family business; something that analysts say takes ne tuning, so it doesnt affect family interactions at home. Their daughter Daneen is hands on at Olies. Their son Devin also participated in the business during its formative years. Even the family dog greets customers as they come in. Olson said many customers wait in the coffee lounge while servicing is done; many take the time to sit and chat, catching up about things happening in the community. She invites anyone to come in and check out Olies, and compare their services to those offered elsewhere. We have had our really steady customers over the years. We are fortunate that we have had strong customers and friends that have supported us, said Olson. The Olsons are well known in the community. Larry Olson was raised in Strathmore and he took over the family farm, working the land with his wife Darriel. The family has always supported local community events. They are active in hunter training, wilderness preservation initiatives, and support local hockey programs.

Anglican Bishop helps St. Andrews celebrate Patronal Feast Day

MANNY EVERETT Times Contributor The quaint little Anglican Church in Gleichen, St. Andrews celebrated their patronal feast day with a service and a spaghetti supper that followed. Bishop Greg Kerr-Wilson from the Anglican Diocese in Calgary presided over the Eucharistic service at the Church with Reverend Brad Everett and Rev. Canon Bob Greene assisting him. The three ministers were vested in red symbolizing not only that it was a feast day but also that Andrew was martyred for his faith. Kerr-Wilson gave an excellent interactive and engaging homily that included what history was available about St. Andrew. Andrew is hailed as the Patron Saint of Scotland and rst called of Christs apostles. Diane Brown (member of St. Andrews) catered the spaghetti supper in the new Church hall. Members and guests spent the early evening fellowshipping with one another and enjoying the meal. Bishop Kerr-Wilson then headed off with his wife Vickie to Fort McLeod to preside over their service on Sunday.

Christmas Market
The annual Christmas Market took place on Saturday, Nov. 30 at the Strathmore Civic Center. Their was not a parking spot to be found and the crowds were excited with Christmas Cheer. Staying re safe
SHANNON LEClAIR Times Reporter The holiday season is a time to spend with family, celebrating and being together. Its also the time when there is more risk of a house re. When a cold spell comes many people are running their replaces so its important to make sure your carbon monoxide detector is working and that everything is clean and operating properly. If youre burning wood, make sure the chimney if clear and there is no creosote built up. Another trouble spot over the holiday season is Christmas trees. There are still some traditionalists out there that want to put candles on their tree, little candles. Get away from that, go to LED lights, theyre cool for the temperature rating and theyre more safe than a bulb light, said Muir Furzer, Strathmore Fire Department Fire Chief. Make sure the trees are watered, make sure theyre still moist which reduces the heat and fuel load on them. A dried-out tree can be completely consumed by re in 30 seconds. There are three different freshness tests that can be done to ensure your tree is freshly cut. The branch test is when you draw the end of the branch through the cup of your hand. No needles should come off. For the stump test you can bang the tree stump end on the ground. A fresh cut tree will not lose its green needles. Finally there is the needle test: fold a needle back until the tip touches the stem. The needle should not break and should bounce back to its original form unless it is frozen. Another area of safety concern is the kitchen. Because were having lots of family members over at Christmas time we just have to be more cautious about whats going on. You have to make sure you have home safety in mind, said Furzer. Being careful that little kids arent playing around the stove is one step to take so that no accidents happen. The Strathmore Fire Department doesnt respond to a lot of re calls, but Furzer said in his ve years as chief the department has responded to the occasional Christmas re, so it does happen and is something you should always be aware of. Its a lot to do with cooking. Youre setting up your stove and cooking and you get preoccupied and caught up in all the excitement and in the spirit of Christmas, then you forget about the hot stove running and things catch re, said Furzer. Staying aware of the hazards, and ensuring your tree is fresh cut and kept moist are just a few ways to stay safe this holiday season. More tips on holiday re safety can be found at http:// www.aema.alberta.ca/holidayresafety. cfm.

Zinio for Libraries

SHANNON LEClAIR Times Reporter The Strathmore Municipal Library has brought in yet another new initiative, this time geared towards magazine lovers. Everyone has that favourite magazine they love, whether its Car and Driver, Cosmo, or Canadian Living. One problem with buying magazines is that you have to gure out what to do with them after. You can go to your local library and borrow a magazine, but the selection is lim-

ited - only the current issue is available and there is only one hard copy to borrow. Zinio for Libraries came to Strathmore last month, allowing library members the opportunity to electronically borrow any of the 81 popular magazine titles. This is a very big deal for us to be providing this kind of service because you dont have to walk into the library to borrow a magazine, you dont have to worry about late fees, you can access this all from the comfort of your home, said Assistant Director of Library Services Carmen Erison. One of the nice things about Zinio being at the library is it will clear up the clutter of magazines at home, and there are never any late fees because its a digital copy that will expire after the time is up. Access to Zinio is free of charge, once you have a library membership of course. To access it go to the Marigold e-resources website www.marigold.

ab.ca/eresources and select Zinio. Two separate log-ins must be created: one that allows you to access the Zinio magazines through the library; and then once you select the magazines you want, you create a log in ID with Zinio itself. There is a reader app that you can download on your tablets, you must borrow the magazines on your computer, but once youve borrowed the magazines on

your computer you can access them on your mobile devices, said Erison. Its an exciting program said Erison, and one the municipal library is happy Marigold Library Systems has subscribed to. A library membership costs $20 per family, $12 for an adult and $7.50 for students and seniors. The library card gives you access to Zinio and many more great programs and e-resources.

RCMP proposal voted for

SHANNON LEClAIR Times Reporter Town council members had their rst debate over an issue and idea brought forward by Staff Sgt. Kevin Reilly. In the end council voted for the initiative with four members in favour and three against the idea. Reilly sent a letter to town council members for the regular Nov. 27 meeting regarding ongoing trafc enforcement and a possible short term solution. Efforts to increase trafc patrols and enforcement has not been as effective as it could be due to existing resources being required to attend a higher priority of calls for service within the Town of Strathmore, said Reilly in the letter. He further explained that the Strathmore detachment is generally ranked as one of the busiest detachments in Southern Alberta in criminal code investigations. Every effort has been made to make more and targeted trafc patrols, but prioritization of calls for service prevents the ability to have the required focus and resources dedicated to a consistent trafc enforcement program. I would like to propose an alternative trafc plan; current enhanced trafc programs, stated Reilly in the letter. A number of communities utilize enhanced or extra policing programs to address specic or targeted concerns. A local example, said Reilly, is the Town of Chestermere, which utilizes a yearly budget of $125,000 to pay off-duty RCMP members to perform extra trafc enforcement. The initial reason for the idea is, of course, making the roads safer for everyone, but secondly the program could also potentially become self-funded through the specic trafc penalties collected as a result of the extra enforcement. Reilly asked for the town to enter into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Strathmore RCMP detachment for a period of six months to provide a similar trafc enhancement program in the community. The budget requested is for $4,000 per month, totaling $24,000, for two weekly ve hour shifts plus required supervisory hours to implement the program. Once in place a detachment commander will be put in place to plan and consult with the town about where the best enforcement areas would be, and assess how the program is working. Strathmore Assembly of Youth 2013-2014

The Strathmore Assembly for Youth is excited to embark on a new year and new initiatives. This year the volunteer members of SAY are:
Cheylene Sander
I am a Grade 12 student at SHS. I have always been a very shy person and haunted by stage fright; just the thought of going infront of a crowd made me quiver. Lately I have been working to build up my condence and going out side of my box to do new things and even go on stage. I believe that conquering your fears is a great accomplishment and that is one of the reasons I have joined SAY.

Bailey Zankl

Hi there, my name is Bailey Zankl. I am 15-years-old and I am a grade 10 student in Strathmore High School. I work at Tinas No Frills and I am a four year member of the 903 Air Cadets here in Strathmore. I joined SAY to give back to my community and get a better understanding of how we can better the town and impact it in a positive way.

Conner Vermaak
My name is Parker Petruska and I am in grade 12 at Strathmore High School. I am 17-years-old. I live with my parents, Jerry and Tracy and my younger brother Chase on an acreage just south of town. I also have an older brother, Jared, he is 20-years-old and lives in Calgary. I am an avid sports fan, I enjoy all sports but especially hockey. I attend the Calgary Flames Hockey games regularly which I really enjoy. I also participate in sports, I play wheelchair hockey, in a competitive league, and power soccer which is more of a casual game with friends. Some of my other hobbies include , camping, traveling, video games and computers. I also spend a lot of time riding on the bike paths of Strathmore.

Parker Petruska

Hello, my name is Conner Vermaak. I am a small town soul, and I enjoy the friendly attitude that Strathmore radiates; a characteristic that many people associate with rural communities. I joined the Strathmore Assembly of Youth with a view to perhaps helping the town keep that warm spirit of acceptance that makes it such a special place.

Erik Schiiler

Chennielle Hunt

Hi, my name is Erik Schiiler. I am 16-yearsold and live in Strathmore. I joined SAY to help try to make a difference with youth and the whole community of Strathmore. The best thing about Strathmore is that you have all the benets of living in a city but it still has a small town feel.

I have been a member of SAY a year. I used to be the secretary but now I work with another member on the marketing and communication portion of SAY. I go to Strathmore High School, and Im in the eleventh grade. My hobbies include karate. I am currently second purple and am aiming for a black belt. I am excited to have another year of SAY!

My name is Tyler Magwood and I live in the Town of Strathmore. I attend Holy Cross Collegiate High School and I am currently in grade 12. I live with a family of ve, including two sisters. I have lived in Strathmore for my entire life and I have come to love this town. I am hard of hearing in both ears, but I have adapted to my environment and have a desire to represent youth in Strathmore with disabilities. I am also a competitive swimmer and a cross country runner during the school year.

Tyler Magwood

My name is Caitlin Swan, and Im a student at Strathmore High. Im currently in grade 10 and this is my rst year in SAY. I love living in Strathmore, and the feeling of community that comes with it. Were not just people living in the same vicinity going about our daily business, but neighbors engaging in each others lives. Because of my love of this community, I hope by joining SAY I can improve youth involvement and awareness in the issues affecting Strathmore.

Caitlin Swan

Pedicures Manicures Waxing

Hello. My name is Sarah and I am currently a grade 12 student at Holy Cross Collegiate. While I live rurally I spend much of my time here in Strathmore between school, athletics, and volunteering. I joined SAY three years ago to help combat the complaint that youth have nothing to do in Strathmore. The truth is, a wide variety of activities do exist, but go largely unnoticed. As a member of SAY I have had the honour of taking part in our efforts to shed light on what is available for youth, as well as advocate for the creation of further resources geared towards young people in our community.

Sarah McKinnon

My name is Rayven Moore and I am in grade 11 at Holy Cross Collegiate. I joined SAY because I strongly believe in the groups mission to provide youth with a voice in Strathmore and want to contribute to the impact SAY is having in Strathmore. As a growing town I believe that it is important for Strathmore to develop into a place where teens can participate in their community and I am looking forward to organizing and promoting activities for youth.

New initiative for RCMP

Continued from Page 16 Councillor Bob Sobol was immediately in favour of the idea, stating that trafc enforcement can be dangerous and is best left up to the RCMP. The time for education has passed in regards to these and other trafc issues. We have at our disposal an opportunity to be proactive and form a new partnership with the RCMP, one that would allow them to devote unfettered and dedicated hours to focus on our trafc concerns, said Sobol. Although this program has worked well in other areas and has proven to be nancially viable I would still recommend that we move forward on the enhanced trafc enforcement program for a limited period. Councillor John Rempel was not so in favour of entering into an MOU with the RCMP. He had a number of questions for Reilly who was unable to attend the meeting, and said that another option available is the Alberta Sheriffs Department. It would be revenue neutral, said Rempel, and would allow the ofcers in town to focus more on their regular duties. He feels council needs to be more direct with the RCMP to do patrolling in town. Strathmore currently has 16 RCMP members. We have more than enough ofcers to ll the demands that are set out in our contract I believe, said Rempel. He states that there are always members off on stress leave, which leaves the detachment shorthanded for enforcement. It also means the members working are even busier, which could create more stress resulting in more members taking time off. Sobol had mentioned how this initiative is not a cash cow, but Rempel argues that it is because it is supposed to be revenue neutral, which means ofcers are obligated to write a certain number of tickets to make it so. Rempel feels the sheriffs can do trafc enforcement with less pressure and likely be just as effective. He requested that the information be brought forward to the next council meeting so that Reilly could be on hand to answer questions. Councillor Rocky Blokland was concerned about the requested budget amounts and said he would like to see the town Peace Ofcers doing trafc enforcement: that way the town could use 40 hours a week of its own resources. These people (Peace Ofcers) are not armed and I am really concerned about unarmed Peace Ofcers doing trafc stops especially on Hwy 1, this is not a game, this is serious stuff and some of these people that theyre stopping have got guns. I would hope that we would look at the safety issue and leave this to the right people that have the equipment to be doing stops, said Sobol Every day that we postpone this and play around with it its not going to change the fact that we are short of trafc enforcement in this town and thats all this program is, its to add trafc enforcement on a limited six month basis. I believe we owe it to our constituents, to our taxpayers that we follow through with due diligence, we cant just vote and award something like this to the RCMP, we have the Sheriff department to consider as well, they are a provincial police force and they do carry side arms, argued Rempel. Im not against the RCMP doing this, what I am against is trying to get this ramrodded through in one evening here with very short notice when there are alternatives to this and we should have the option of doing that. The motion to defer the decision to the next council meeting was defeated with Councillors Brad Walls, John Rempel and Rocky Blokland in favour of postponing. Sobol made a motion to enter into the agreement and have an MOU drafted. The three men in favour of postponing voted against the motion with the remaining four council members voting in favour.

Silhouettes looking for teachable athletes

ARYSSaH STaNKEVITSCH Times Reporter Strathmore Silhouettes Head Coach Tara Smith held open tryouts on Dec. 1 at Jumphouse Gymnastics for her junior and precompetitive categories, set to begin in January. Ten girls, ages four to eight, showed off their abilities, attitudes and athletics. I was looking for not necessarily their skill level but more their natural strength and exibility, their attitude, their teachability, Smith said. Its actually good to get them when they are younger and havent built any skills up, because then you can teach them the way that you want to teach them, rather than maybe having gained some bad habits or being rushed through skills. Smith is still looking for young gymnasts, especially in her junior precompetitive category of ages four to ve. I dont know if itll run because I only had two girls, Smith said. Unless we happen to get more, the day time junior precompetitive wont run. Smith believes gymnastics can offer many skills, especially at a competitive level; a chance to develop strong work ethic, self-condence, and tness. That kind of tness strength, exibility, coordination, body awareness can be used in any sport as they grow older. Its good for cross-training, for anything else that they choose to do, she said. Theyre kind of working on an individual sport but theyre part of a supportive team also. The girls also gain experience in self-discipline, listening, and focusing which could also be used at home. With some of the older girls from the competitive team moving on to other endeavors, it is the perfect time to rebuild the precompetitive program for younger athletes, Smith said of her new prospects. They have their strengths, and theres weaknesses in there. As long as theyre teachable in my opinion, thats what counts. Parents interested in signing up their children can contact Tara Smith at strathcoach@hotmail.com

Christmas Hamper
The Strathmore Christmas Hamper needs your help. Deadlines were changed this year, and with the date close approaching, they are finding themselves low on donations. They are currently still in the collection phase, but will begin bagging items around Dec. 12 with a pick up date scheduled for Dec. 16. The donations are given to residents of the Strathmore and Wheatland County that have gone through a screening process. The hours of volunteer work that goes into organizing this every year is astounding and this year they need the towns help with donations. As of now they are short on teenage girl/boy items, age 12-14 boy/girl items, slippers, books and sports items make great donations. They have an over abundance of stuffed animals and Barbies and ask that any donations given do not include these items. The Hamper would like to thank everyone for their generosity and donations in advance. Shown here are Stella Heberling (l-r), Melva Enevoldsen, Terrey Criddle and Christene Howard.

Pure Natural Health Company opens

ARYSSaH STaNKEVITSCH Times Reporter After Country Escape Spa & Wellness closed down last year, former employee Amy Giordani kept her eyes and ears open for a space in town to run her own business while doing mobile massages. On Dec. 2 her venture, Pure Natural Health Company, opened at 124 3rd Ave. Everything just was falling into place, Giordani said. Were booking into January. Pure Natural Health Company is currently taking clients on an appointment-only basis, for their offerings of deep tissue, hot stone, lymphatic draining and Swedish massages. (Appointment only) is just for the time being. Everybody is really excited to be taking appointments and working from somewhere in Strathmore, Giordani said. I teach infant massage classes as well for parents to learn how to massage their children I specialize in the newborns. Parents can hands-on with their babies and make them more comfortable. It helps with growing pains. Giordani will be joined by another massage therapist and a naturopath from Drumheller. Some clients weve lost over the years, theyre not too keen on the mobile massage. They kind of like their boundaries, they dont want you to come into their home, Giordani said. So weve had an inux of clients since weve said well be stationary again and working out of a place. Look up Pure Natural Health Company on Facebook, or book by calling (403) 361-3599.

Bisons earn revenge against Tigers

The Rockyview Raiders dropped to the CNHA Blazers on Nov. 26 by a score of 6-2 on Nov. 26 at the Max Bell Centre. The Raiders are on a two game losing streak after placing second at the Prospect Cup Tournament in Chestermere Nov. 15-17.

Raiders drop to Blazers

ARYSSaH STaNKEVITSCH Times Reporter During the rst game of their season, the Rockyview Raiders of the Alberta Minor Midget AAA Hockey League lost to the CNHA Blazers by a score to 3-1 on Oct. 5. For their rematch on Nov. 26, the Raiders had a similar outcome the Blazers won 6-2 at the Max Bell Centre in Calgary, starting with strong play in the rst period. They did everything better than we did, said Doug Thurston, Raiders head coach. I hate to be blunt but that might have been our worst game of the season. I think we have a little tournament hangover. The Raiders nished with silver at the Nov. 15-17 Prospect Cup Tournament in Chestermere. They were pretty happy with the way they played in the tournament, and then theyve come out with two stinkers in a row, Thurston said. Its us not being ready to play hard. The Red Deer Aero Equipment Chiefs shut out Rockyview 3-0 on Nov. 23. Most of it has been lack of effort, physically and mentally, as far as just getting down the ice and nishing checks -that hasnt been there. When it came to systems and plays, they havent been doing that very well either, Thurston

Aryssah Stankevitsch Photo

said. The Raiders had two game misconducts against the Blazers: Cooper Krauss, and Siksika-born Trygve Many Guns near the end of the third period. Many Guns is tied for team lead with nine points in 13 games with Nash Hartford. Unfortunately the referees dictate how the game goes, Thurston said. The ofciating in our league is very up and down. Thurston mentioned that the squad works on special teams quite frequently in practice; ve of the teams 35 goals have come on the man advantage, but more work needs to be done on the defensive end. Unfortunately were losing that battle so far this year. If we want to win hockey games, we have to stay out of the penalty box, Thurston said. (On Nov. 26) we took way too many unnecessary penalties. Strathmores Kody Hammond scored a powerplay goal in the third for Rockyview, but it was too late in the matchup to gain momentum. Hammond has a team-leading six goals. Kody was not as bad as some of them, but not as good as he can play. Theres no doubt that sometimes that is dictated by the people around you, too, Thurston said. Its hard to be an eagle when youre working with turkeys. The Rockyview Raiders are 12th in the South Division with a 3-8-2 record.

Looking for redemption from their rst meeting of the season, where the SEAC Tigers defeated the UFA Bisons 5-2 on Oct. 25, Coach Dan MacDonald and his squad were victorious over the Tigers 4-1 in Medicine Hat on Nov. 28. With the win, the Bisons are again at the top of the Chrysler Division, while SEAC are 4-9-2 on the season, and 16 points lower in the standings. It wasnt an easy game, MacDonald said. But we had possession of the puck a lot. The Bisons leading scorer Mason McCarty (24 points in 18 games), Ryan Zeniuk, and Mackenzie Bauer were all out of the lineup, the latter two with abdominal injuries. Those are three really offensive players, MacDonald said. Were hoping to have Mason back next week. Two afliated players - Davis Sheldon and Jordan McConnell stepped in to assist the shortened bench. McConnell contributed two goals, including the game winner. Bisons forward Connor Boyd added a goal and an assist, now placing him second behind McCarty in team points with 20 in 20 games. Goalie Carter Seminuk is top ten in goalie rankings within the AMHL, with a .923 save percentage and 2.17 goals against average. Seminuk almost added a third shutout to his resume against the Tigers; he made 16 saves that evening. As a team that on average has ve penalties assessed per game, the Bisons stayed out of the box for the majority of Nov. 28. They were only short handed once; their last game against the Fort Saskatchewan Rangers on Nov. 24 had them 18 minutes in penalties. Were playing more disciplined, but theyre young kids still learning, MacDonald said. The Bisons next game is Dec. 7 at the Strathmore Family Centre against the SSAC Boston Pizza Athletics. Puck drop is at 8 p.m.

TIMES

Pass the Salt

TAKE A DEEP BREATH I spent ten years in Japan where religion plays little part in most peoples lives and where a mere one per cent of the population are Christian. Nonetheless, every December the streets were decorated, shops were lled with Christmas carols, and children spoke of a bearded man in a red suit. To all appearances, Christmas was coming, and then nothing. Christmas Eve was the biggest date night of the year, and families signed up in advance for a time slot in which to pick up their bucket of KFC, but December 25 was a regular work day for most people. It always seemed to me that Japan had all the build-up but missed out on Christmas itself. Increasingly, I feel the same way in Canada, except that even the build-up has become too generic to be satisfying. I dont want to celebrate winter, snowmen, gifts, or even family. I want to celebrate Christmas. Like Linus in the Charlie Brown classic, I want Christmas to be about shepherds abiding in their elds and an angel of the Lord proclaiming peace and goodwill to all. I want it to be about a carpenter and a young woman, a census, a long journey and no room in the inn. I want it to be about a star and a heavenly choir. Most of all, I want it to be about a baby; Jesus, who is God made man, come to redeem our world and all who dwell within it. Thats what I want to celebrate. And I do. But I have to work pretty hard at it. I try to full the cultural expectations and to let my child experience all the season has to offer, but I guard my time and I guard my focus. One of the best ways Ive found to do that is to observe the season of Advent. In liturgical churches, Advent is a period of expectant waiting and preparation, not only for Christs coming as a babe at Bethlehem but for his eventual return in power. Advent invites us to reection and repentance as well as to hopeful expectation. And that invites us to slow down, take a deep breath, and turn our thoughts from gifts, food, and parties toward the manger. Advent has just begun. I invite you to join in the waiting Angela Arinze, Lay Reader St. Michael and All Angels Anglican Church

VIP connections
ARYSSaH STaNKEVITSCH Times Reporter Meant to connect and give back to the supportive Strathmore community, the UFA Bisons are hosting a VIP event with the help of the Rockyview Raiders for their Dec. 13 game against the Calgary Northstars at the Strathmore Family Centre. The very important people will include children with special needs from schools in the area, as well as special needs adults. I feel that special needs kids dont have the opportunity that most teenage kids have, said Michelle Bishop, the event coordinator, who works with disabled children at Strathmore High School (SHS). Teenagers have those social connections, whereas its more difcult for kids with disabilities and special needs in a small town to make those connections. Bishop will be sending letters out to schools to bring attention to the event, and informing the AIM Society (Advocacy In Motion) to gather the VIPs. (AIM) are kids that have graduated from high school, and out in the community working -- with support, Bishop said. Once you graduate from high school, you kind of fall out of touch. They can come and connect with the kids who are still in school. Special attendees will be mentored and kept company by the AMMHL Rockyview Raiders for the Dec. 13 game, in a roped-off section behind the Bisons bench. This was my idea with support from the Bisons, Bishop said, whose son Joshua plays for the team. I brought up the idea at the beginning of the season, and theyve encouraged me into doing this. They thought it was a good idea for the team to help. Students have been invited to sing the national anthem for the crowd. Strathmore High Schools leadership class will be assisting, along with parents and friends. Attendees can also snap pictures with SHSs mascot Sparty and Santa Claus. Theres really nothing in Strathmore for kids to do or hang out in a safe environment, Bishop said. These kids make my day everyday they make me smile, are grateful and very proud. I believe each of these students deserve to be treated to a special night. I would really like to have them come to the Bisons game to help cheer on our boys. Warm-up begins at 7:30 p.m., followed by puck drop a half hour later. Admission is $3 for adults, and $2 for seniors and students (SHS students are free with an ID card). Everyone is encouraged to bring a food bank item or an unwrapped gift; names will then be put into a prize-winning basket. There will be a meet and greet with the Bisons after the game as well. Bishop plans to run more events like this in the future. For more information, contact her at mbishop6@telus.net.

After suffering a hard 9-5 loss at the hands of the Bow Valley Timberwolves in Cochrane, the Wheatland Braves rebounded on Dec. 1 with a 3-1 win over the Lethbridge Hurricanes White at home. The Braves are now 8-9-2 on the season.

Braves split
ARYSSaH STaNKEVITSCH Times Reporter After a tough loss at the hands of the Bow Valley Timberwolves in Cochrane on Nov. 30, the AA Wheatland peewee Braves battled back the next day with a 3-1 victory over the Lethbridge Hurricanes White in Strathmore. The loss to the Timberwolves was largely due to allowing four powerplay goals. Our penalty kill was off a little bit, said Braves Coach Keith Klemmensen. We had especially a lot of trouble that day clearing pucks. Bow Valley is probably the best team in the league. When we have chances to clear the zone, we have to make it work. Klemmensen mentioned that as the most penalized team in the North Division, he was surprised that his teams lack of skill while a man short hadnt affected them in a game so far this season. Against the Hurricanes, however, the Braves man advantage had a positive affect on the game, as two of their three markers came on the powerplay. We dont focus on powerplay at all, Klemmensen said. Realistically, at this stage of the season, we just throw out the next for the powerplay. Basically you tell guys to shoot and put pucks at the net. The two goals that were scored occurred against the same

Aryssah Stankevitsch Photos

double minor penalty. Thats what happens when you put the puck on the net instead of trying to dipsy-doodle your way in all the time, Klemmensen said. Hassan Akl, Kyle Crnkovic, and Cole Berg had two point nights this weekend; Majid Kaddoura had two against both Bow Valley and Lethbridge. Tarun Fizer had three points in the Timberwolves game, and continued his streak with a goal against the Hurricanes he now has 33 points in 19 games. Klemmensen noted that both his goalies Ethan Rycroft and Kenny Holt-Stewart had excellent games this weekend, both stopping over 40 shots in each game. The Hurricanes were a big, strong team that actually got some good quality chances. They had a few powerplays as well. Our goaltender was really good that day bailed us out, Klemmensen said of Holt-Stewart. As for Rycroft, Klemmensen mentioned that he stops everything you can expect humanly possible. Bow Valley would get the puck, and hed stop three or four. They were scoring goals on the fourth or fth shot. He played great, Klemmensen said. The Braves are 8-9-2 on the season, and play the Lethbridge Hurricanes Red next on Dec. 15. The midget Chiefs battle The Edge School on Dec. 4, and bantam Warriors face off against the Red Deer Steel Kings at home on Dec. 7.

The Strathmore Ice Warriors are off to a great start this season.

Ice Warriors continue the run

MEL BOSCHEE Strathmore Ice Warriors This past weekend took the Ice Warriors to Calgary on Saturday. The excitement was buzzing when the Ice Warriors stepped on the ice in Calgary. The team was strong but not solid. When the buzzer sounded to signal the rst period was over, the Warriors were down 3-2. Alex Mackey was strong in goal and thats what got the Warriors through to the second. A little pep talk between periods and some harsh reality that the Ice Warriors were being out worked by the Calgary NW Trouble, brought the Warriors to certainty they needed work harder. Harder was not the word for the second period, it was utmost precision as the Warriors scored nine goals. When the buzzer broadcast the game was over, Ice Warriors leave the bright city lights with an 11-3 victory. Excitement was still high Sunday when the Ice Warriors had home ice advantage to take on the Cochrane Rockies. Cochrane came out with intensity and scored the rst goal, but Ice Warriors answered back with one of their own. When the buzzer rang out at the end of the rst, Ice Warriors were up 5-2. The second period brought some penalty troubles, but the Ice Warriors were resilient, and with Alex Mackey displaying some heavy-duty goaltending, the Ice Warriors stepped off the ice with another win. Again the team was strong with all members playing hard. It is denitely precision on ice and pretty to watch. Goals this weekend went to Susanne Sevcik, Grace Praeker, Payton Jensen, Jaylin MacLean, Laura Sader, Cayley Boschee, Meghan Munchrath, Joely Dahm and Olivia Wilson. Unselshly, Cosette Lacroix was part of every play and worked hard, and without that determination, the goal scorers would have struggled. Of course, what can you say about our goaltender Alex Mackey? Strong, sturdy, tough, and consistent about sum it up. The Ice Warriors are looking at attending another tournament to make their game play even stronger with a generous donation from Greg Wilson, Strathmore Mufer Shop. It might be too late in the season to get into a tournament but that wont stop Ice Warriors from looking and continuing to play strong. This coming up weekend takes the Ice Warriors out of town; Saturday to Airdrie and Sunday to Vulcan (to take on Lethbridge).

Home Hardware raises over $1K

ARYSSaH STaNKEVITSCH Times Reporter Through their skate sharpening donation box, Strathmore Home Hardware has been able to raise funds for the Growing Families Society and Christmas Hamper $750, and $400 respectively. We sharpen a lot of skates through the course of the year. We start heavy duty in October and right through to when hockeys over, said Perry Banadyga, owner of the Home Hardware. If people are paying cash, where we dont have to put through the till, we just have it put in the box. Then we donate it to different causes. Banadyga says the store has donated to sports teams in town and plans to contribute more 2014. We sort of take the money weve collected and divvy it up a bit. Growing Families have had most of their funding cut, and we donated more to them simply because theyre not recognized, and they dont get many funds, Banadyga said. Wed like to get it to eventually, where groups just send us letters saying wed like to be part of this. Then wed put a poster up and say this months funds go to, Girl Guides, or whatever it may be. Last year was the rst for the skate sharpening box charity initiative; $13,000 was donated to the Crisis Centre, with help from Home Hardwares box and Sobeys separate fundraising. I just really think that the communitys been good to us and wed like to give back to the community. Its a nice, easy way, Banadyga said. Theyre paying for the skates anyways, so we just put the $5 in. We encourage people to pay cash if they can.

Our family mourns the passing of Sharon Linda Olsen (nee Kernaghan) on November 24th 2013. Loving wife of 50 years to Garry, devoted mother to Wes (Tanis) and Kelly (Ken) and adoring grandmother to Ryan, Kaitlynn, Eric Scott and Taylor. Sharon is survived by her siblings: brother; Garry and sisters: Joan; Jackie; Norma and Linda and 31 nieces and nephews. She is pre-deceased by her parents David and Nettie, brothers Mel and Bob and sisters Audrey and Donna. Born on February 4th 1944 in Calgary Alberta Sharon was the second youngest of 10 children. Growing up she was very active in sports and held a school record for high jump at Chestermire Lake High. On November 16th 1963 she married the love of her life and had two children. Garry and Sharon moved extensively over the years in British Columbia due to Garrys job as an ironworker. In 1979 they decided to set their roots on Vancouver Island and started a successful construction company, Geo-Tech Industries in the early 80s which is still active to date. Sharon was passionate about hunting and shing and spent weeks on end in the Chilcotin with Garry on their recreation property. It was not uncommon for her to go out and get a Grouse or two for dinner as living off the land is what she loved. With that kind of spirit and passion Sharon would end up facing the battle of her life. In 2008 she was diagnosed with Lymphoma in which she started treatment, and in 2010 was told she had pancreatic cancer and given 3 to 6 months to live. That diagnosis was not an option for her and come hell or high water was going to show everyone what she was made of and show this disease that it had picked the wrong woman. With that said she astounded Doctors and family and lived a productive life for 3 more years, a true ghter to the end. Sharon was a long time member of the Ladies Auxiliary Branch 191 and the Eagles. No formal service will be held but a celebration of life will take place in the summer of 2014 at the Olsen Duck Lake Ranch. The date will be published when determined. In lieu of owers donations can be made to the Cowichan District Hospital Foundation. Online condolences may be offered at www.sandsduncan.ca.

A wonderful mother, woman and aid; one Who was better God, never made, a wonderful Worker, loyal and true. One in a million, that, Mother was you. Just in your judgment, always Right, honest and liberal, ever upright. Loved by your Friends and all who knew. A wonderful mother, that Mother was you. Forever in our thoughts and prayers, Love Garry, Kim, Justin and Jennifer. When days are dark and friends are few. Dear mother-in-law how I think of you. Friends are friends if they are true. I lost my best friend when I lost you. Love always Kim.

In loving memory of our dear mother, Lillian, who passed away November 21, 1994.
