Canyon View High School
Course Description:
This course is designed to help ninth grade students transition to the high school culture. For the first time in
their educational career, it counts—LITERALLY! The grades students earn in their very first class in their
very first quarter will be forever on a transcript that will follow them the rest of their lives. To prosper in the
21st century workplace, an exceptional education is critical. Gaining such an education requires work, effort,
and striving. However, many students do not understand the link between life satisfaction and academic
achievement; thus, they fail to make the necessary personal investment. So, in short, this course is about
getting students to see beyond “Saturday night” and giving them the skills to make the most of their
education.

Class Curriculum:
The Skills for Success/Freshman Transitions Course has adopted a curriculum based upon George
Washington University’s Freshman Transitions Standards. The following texts and resources have been
studied and the very best of their contents will dominate the course of instruction in this course.
1. Career Choices – This text is a fantastic guide for teens to discover the importance of education upon
their future. It will also help students discover better who they are, what they are good at, and what
are some of their options for future employment to bring them both basic sustenance and a deeper
purpose in life.
2. The Seven Habit of Highly Effective Teens This text is a rewrite for teens of the world famous
book, The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People by Steven Covey. It was written by Steven Covey’s
son, Sean Covey. Sean takes his father’s wisdom and puts it in a language and style much more
accessible to the teenage mind. It, perhaps, will have the greatest impact on students that are seeking
for a better way to do things.
3. Ten Skills You Really Need to Succeed in School This text deals with the very basic of good
educational skill. These skills begin by students looking inside themselves and ranges from thinking
skills to test taking and writing skills.
4. Teacher Requests In preparation for this course, I interviewed many of my teaching colleagues to
ask them what they thought students need or need to improve most to succeed. Through these
interviews, I was able to put together a list of “Teacher Requests” that are perhaps the most realistic
curriculum I could ever get from any textbook. So, much class time will be spent discussing these
teacher driven ideals and working to improve student understanding and skill in these varied areas of
student life.
5. Reading Comprehension Instruction I will test each student in their reading ability and work to
improve overall reading fluency and comprehension. Reading truly is the key to all other learning. It
is a must for students to succeed and will be a large part of this class.
CVHS DRSLS:
1. An Effective Communicator – who is capable of using all mediums and forms of expression to gather,
develop and communicate effectively.
2. A Responsible Citizen – who has a sound work ethic, respect for self, peers and others, contributes to
the community, and accepts responsibility for reaching his/her individual potential.
3. A Competent Learner – who acquires, organizes and evaluates information, applies multiple strategies
to solve problems, and uses inquiry and technological skills to research, expand, apply, and connect
knowledge.

Dear Parents,
To view the course disclosure, go to the following website: allredcvhs.posterous.com When you have finished reading
the course disclosure please take a moment to sign off demonstrating that you have read it. Also, I have found that
many of our records at school are often outdated or missing important items. If you could please fill out the student
information sheet, it would help me to contact you when necessary. I have found that one of the most difficult
things to do at the high school level is keep in good contact with the parents of the nearly 200 students
that I teach every year. I have found that email is the cheapest and most efficient way to make contact for most
things, so please include that if you have an email address. Cell phone numbers are also very helpful.
When you have completed this course disclosure sign offsheet, please fill out this student information sheet. Pull this
top page off and have your son or daughter return it to me. Please keep the course disclosure for future reference.
Thank you,
Mrs. Allred
