Dear Friends, Thirty-some years ago, when the Holy Spirit began nudging me to know God as a living Lord, someone suggested I read the Gospel of John. Paragraph by paragraph my eyes were opened, and by Gods grace, I met Jesus. The twenty-one chapters of Johns Gospel permitted me not only to read the claims that he is the Messiah, but also to see Jesus in action and to listen to his teaching for myself. Beginning this Sunday and for the six weeks following, I want to challenge you to listen to Jesus by reading the Gospel according to John. After an introduction this Sunday, the next six Sundays will focus on the I am sayings of Jesus that are found only in John. Listed below are ways you can be aided in getting the most out of Gods Word during this Lenten Season. 1. Receive Daily Email Readings. Weve divided John into sections and will send about twenty verses a day, six days a week, starting Monday, February 18 and ending on Easter. A brief reflection on each reading, written by Eastminster ministers and members, will also be included. If youd like to receive this, simply make sure we have an email address for you by emailing tcarter@eastminsterpres.org. 2. Attend the Pastors Class Sunday School. Even if youve never come to Sunday School, try this. Meet in the Parlor at the rear of the Sanctuary this Sunday at 10:00 a m. Bring your Bible, and dont worry, you wont be called on. 3. Dig In at the Breakfast Bible Study. Monday mornings from 7:00-8:00 a.m. in Thompson Hall. Enjoy a bodacious breakfast ($4), friendly fellowship, and one of our pastors teaching on that days reading. 4. Participate in a Mid-week Study. A mirrored class will be offered Wednesdays at 11:00 a.m. and again at 6:15 p.m. Dr. Mark Durrett will be the primary teacher with Mark teaching for roughly thirty minutes then providing opportunities for discussion. Wednesday night students can stay in a large group for discussion, or break out and share discussion in small groups. 5. Satellite Studies. The Wednesday teaching will be videotaped and provided to small groups that will meet on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, with some meeting at the church and others meeting downtown. *To help us plan effectively, please sign up for the classes listed above by visiting the Eastminster website at http//www.eastminsterpres.org and sign up on the front page of the site, calling Julie McDaniel at 256-1654, or emailing jmcdaniel@eastminsterpres.org. Capital Campaign Enhancements (Part II of III) In addition to the sanctuary improvements mentioned in last weeks UPDATE, here are other worship related items that will be part of the Capital Campaign: 1. Jubilee Worship resonates with a good number of you, and we want to give it increased attention by making Thompson Hall as inviting as possible. 2. New pew cushions. 3. New choir robes. 4. Improved lighting and sound support for the hearing-impaired in the sanctuary. 5. Installing video capacity. While we are doing work in the sanctuary, we believe this is the time to add video capacity so long as, and only if, it can be done in a way that is tasteful, unobtrusive, and befitting our sanctuary. We are not planning to use video during worship. Rest assured, that as tasteful as the Parlor improvement was two years ago, so this enhancement will be equally tasteful. Additional Capital Campaign items approved by the Session will be in next weeks Update. Further details on all the enhancements that are part of the campaign will be available as we move toward the launch in late March. Brad

Workshops will be given by Larry Bonney, a former FBI agent who worked his way up into the upper ranks of that agency, working on several of our countrys high profile crimes along the way. After retirement, he served as Deputy Director of the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. He now lives in Wilmington, NC and works as a consultant. Among other things, he helped with the production of the film The Silence of the Lambs (and has a guest appearance near the beginning of it!) and has been featured on Dateline NBC. The 2013 Eastminster Senior High Urban Mission Trip will be in Nashville, TN. The total cost of this trip is $320.00 which includes transportation, lodging, programming, and the majority of meals. Eastminster will sponsor a Habitat build in New Orleans in coordination with St. Charles Avenue Presbyterian Church. If youve never been on one of these trips, you might consider this a pilgrimage as well as a Christian outreach project. We stay in a nice hotel, enjoy good Creole cuisine, and assist a needy family in building the first home they will ever own. EPC Prayer List Part of what it means to be a Family of Faith is to be in prayer for one another. Contact the church office at 256-1654 to be included on this Prayer List. In Extended Care Margaret Zeigler Hospitalized this week Charlotte Law, Pat Pollard, Al Floyd On weekends a minister is on call. If you have a crisis which one of the ministers needs to know about, phone 256-1654 and leave a message. A minister will return your call.

Eastminster will be serving the residents of Transitions on Thursday, February 21. Transitions is located in downtown Columbia where it houses and trains around 200 homeless and transitional people. You have the opportunity to prepare food, serve, or donate money toward this night. You will think that you are the one serving, but you will be touched beyond belief at the outpouring of love shown to you by the residents. Please join us! Opportunities include serving or mingling with the residents (we will meet at EPC at 4:30 p.m. and return by 6:30 p.m.) Please respond to Laura Long at 530-6731. USC Athletics Director Ray Tanner will speak at the next Savvy Senior meeting on Tuesday, February 26. He will talk about updates in the Universitys athletic program and take a look at current teams -- hope for basketball; prospects for baseball; and dreams for the coming football season. Attention all 6 8th graders, want to go to Washington DC? Well be doing inner-city mission work as we serve as a group and with other youth groups from all over the U.S. The cost is $340.00 with a deposit of $170 due by March 15th. There are only 15 spaces left so please dont wait until the last minute to reserve your spot. Did you know that EPC members administer foot baths and spiritual encouragement to Columbias homeless community every Tuesday from 1-3 p.m. at Christ Central Ministry on North Main Street? Guests are treated to a new pair of tennis shoes and socks provided by EPC, snacks and Christian comfort in their time of need. We thank God for the opportunity to serve others and to be a blessing to those who are in need of a blessing. Update for February 17, 2013

Beginning this Sunday, February 17, the Pastors class will be meeting in the Adult Reception Hall in the CE building. The Childrens Worship Discovery class will meet in the church parlor. Please make note of the changes. We have ordered John for Everyone by N.T. Wright to use with our Lenten study of the Gospel of John. Stop by Julie McDaniels office to pick up your book. The two-volume set is $20. Supper Six is a new fellowship opportunity at Eastminster. Couples or single adults are invited to register for a supper club comprised of 6 Eastminster members. Groups of six will be randomly formed. The goal is to develop meaningful friendships and get to know other members. Each Supper Six group will meet three times: once a month, for three months, March, April and May. Once formed, each Supper Six group will decide the location and time to meet each month. Groups may choose to meet at a members home and share the food preparation, or the group may decide to pick a restaurant and go Dutch. Two ways to sign up: 1. Registration forms will be located in the Narthex on Sunday mornings, and in the Church Receptionists area each day. Fill out a form and leave in the adjacent box; or, 2. Sign up electronically in the E-News. Crossroads Career Network offers programs and opportunities for job seekers, career explorers, employers and regular church attendees to get involved.
