Dear Eastminster Family, Have you ever noticed what a good job most colleges and universities do asking for money? And it works! Development staffs cultivate relationships and tell the story of those institutions, then invite people to invest to impact future students during those four years. As important as the work of colleges and universities might be, I think the work of the church of Jesus Christ is more important. And the church positively impacts lives literally from birth to death. Well, we dont have a development office. Instead, I write today to invite and even to encourage you to join Nancy and me in giving over and above your regular giving so that we can update our worship spaces, even as we will also give ten percent beyond our own facility needs. If each of us gives as God has given to us, these needs will be met, and we will share the joy of giving beyond ourselves. This Sunday, May 19, marks both Pentecost Sunday and our Toward 2020 Commitment Sunday. Pentecost is the commemoration of Gods Spirit being poured out upon Jesus early followers. Often referred to as the birthday of the church, Pentecost reminds us that the Holy Spirit continues to be at work today, drawing us to God, nudging us, encouraging us, filling us, and empowering us to be Christs body in the world. How fitting then that this Sunday also marks the day we are asked to make this three-year pledge. I am excited to share that we are well on the way to being able to make these enhancements possible, as early pledgers have committed $2,000,000 thus far. I want to thank those of you who have given generously, even as I encourage others to experience the joy of giving that God has given to you. Although each persons situation might be different, my prayer is that every one of us will join in this legacy work by giving something. Some of you are in a position to give substantial amounts from accumulated assets, and I hope you will. Others of you are on fixed salaries/incomes and can give less. The good news is that ten gifts of $3,000 each ($1,000 a year for three years) add up to the same amount as one gift of $30,000 ($10,000 a year for three years). There is no better investment of resources than in the work of Jesus Christ. I encourage you to pledge generously this Sunday. And I encourage you not because Im interested in raising money, but because Im called to help you develop as disciples of our Living Lord. An opportunity is before us. Lets grow! See you Sunday, Brad

The 2013 graduating 5th Grade Class Creed

WEDNESDAY, maY 22
8:30 9:00 9:30 12:00 6:15

Our 5th graders finished their Sunday School year by working the last few weeks on a class creed. With the support of the Sunday School teachers, Croskeys Royall, and Pastor Brad Smith, they looked at some of the historic creeds of the church and what it meant to believe something. After contributing ideas and coming up with 3 outstanding class creeds, the results were combined into the creed that was read on Sunday, May 12 during the worship servicves to the congretaion. We believe In God, who can be fierce and powerful, and loving and forgiving, and to whom we can pray to help us with what is right and what is wrong. We believe In God the Father, who created the heavens and the earth; who created and loves us enough to send his Only Son to take away our sins. We believe In God the Son, who healed people and whom we can talk to in prayer to ask forgiveness. We believe he was crucified for our sins and conquered death to return to life. We believe In God the Holy Spirit, who we look for among us and around us, and who we trust is always with us. We believe that we should share our faith with others and live with faith and trust in God.

CARE & CONCERN

EPC Prayer List Part of what it means to be a Family of Faith is to be in prayer for one another. Contact the church office at 256-1654 to be included on this Prayer List. EPC Special Concerns Walker Pearce, Boots Fuller, Remer Waguestack, Dr. Mary Tobin, those serving in our military, Stephen Ministers & their care receivers and all those in need of Gods special care. Hospitalized this week Molly Wood Deaths Congregational love and sympathy are extended to:

Camp Itchalot, is for children served by the Columbia Area Mental Health Center. Many of these children have social, emotional, behavioral and/or psychiatric problems which are too difficult to manage in a typical summer camp environment. During the summer, their counselors provide recreational activities in a camp atmosphere which teach skills improving behavior, peer conflict resolution and self-esteem. Please use the special envelope in your offering packet or write Camp Itchalot on the memo line. The church is searching for a dependable, friendly person to greet visitors and answer the phone at the main reception desk from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. on either Tuesdays or Wednesdays. You will receive training and lots of support! If you can give just an hour a week, please call Tricia at 2561654! The Family Shelter has a critical need for size 3 & 4 diapers. Between now and May 30, bring diapers to boxes in Thompson Hall, the CLC and the churchs main reception area. The mission of the Family Shelter is to provide emergency shelter, food, resources, and hope to homeless families with children in the Midlands area. Many of you may have noticed the church has placed a number of signs along Longleaf Dr. and Trenholm Rd. restricting parking between 8:00 a.m. - 6 p.m. from Monday - Friday. We felt this was necessary, not to inconvenience anyone, but for the safety of the children attending the day school. Mornings, lunch times and after work are very busy times with drop off and pickup of children, as well as activity all day. We are sorry if this has caused you any inconvenience, and are sure you will agree, inconvenience for the safety of child is well worth a few extra steps. Past, Present and Future of SC State Hospital Property will be the program topic for the Tuesday, May 28, meeting of Savvy Seniors. Speaker will be Dr. Woodrow (Woody) Harris, former director of the SC State Hospital at the SC Department of Mental Health. He will give a broad overview of the Bull Street propertys fabled history and comment on plans for its future use -- a topic very much in todays news. Dr. Harris worked at the State Hospital campus for more than 20 years, taking on roles of archivist and unofficial historian of the SC Department of Mental Health. Lunch will be served at noon in Thompson Hall. For reservations, call Mary Baldauf at 256-1654 no later than noon on Friday, May 24. ... Did you know that Eastminster gave over $600,000.00 to ministries beyond the church in 2012, including $3,540.05 to Oliver Gospel Mission? When you support Gods work through Eastminter, you are supporting our Lords work in the community as well. John Hudson
