Speedsters beware, the Johannesburg
Metropolitan Police Department’s
(JMPD) high speed unit will catch up
with you.
Formed in November 2006, the unit
has helped decrease the speed of road
users throughout Joburg, Midrand and
Roodepoort. Recently, the Sun spent
a night with Sergeant Johan du Toit’s
team (which has arrested over 650
people this year), witnessing just how
bad Beyers Naude Drive becomes after
dark.
“The speed limit here (near the
N1 interchange) is 60km/h. We give
motorists 30km/h grace and only start
fining from 91. Anything over 101
is reckless driving and the penalty is
arrest,” said Du Toit.
“Often the public have a negative
perception of JMPD, but this unit is
not a mickey mouse speed cop money-
making scheme. We generate no
income and act only to bring safety to
