1. Homonyms
Homonyms are words that are very much alike. They may be spelt alike and sound alike but have a different meaning according to their use. (This group is also known as homographs).

For example, look at how the words fair, file and bank are used in these sentences. (b) The referee was fair in all his decisions. 2. (a) I used the file to smooth the metal bar.

(b) Please file these notes under the correct section. 3. (a) I want you to put this money in the bank.

(b) The river reached the top of this bank during the flood.

Therefore, these examples of homonyms change their meanings as they are used in a sentence. Sometimes, but not always, their part of speech changes as well.

1. Homonyms continued
Other homonyms are less alike: That is they sound alike, but have different meanings and spellings. (This group is also known as homophones).

Here are some examples: 1. (a) The bird flew overhead. (b) I had a heavy dose of the flu during winter. (c) The flue on the chimney became clogged up from the soot. 2. (a) The heavy weed growth caused the water hole to foul up. (b) There were many water fowl on the lake this summer. 3. (a) I jammed my toe in the door. (b) We had to tow the boat to the waters edge.
