Verimatrix contends with multiple operating systems

Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.3 Oracle 11g Enterprise Edition

Founded in 2000, Verimatrix specializes in securing and enhancing revenue for multi-network, multi-screen digital TV services around the globe. The company was running its award-winning Verimatrix Video Content Authority System (VCAS) on three different operating systems and wanted to standardize on one stable and secure platform. Verimatrix chose Red Hat Enterprise Linux. Today, the company embeds the Red Hat platform into its VCAS, offering highly secure delivery of video content over multiple networks to help pay-TV operators capture and increase revenue while enhancing their subscribers quality of experience. Embedding the Red Hat platform allows them to more tightly manage their security configuration, which strengthens their value proposition and reduces their product development and maintenance costs.

Founded in 2000, Verimatrix specializes in securing and enhancing revenue for multi-network, multi-screen digital TV services around the globe. The award-winning and independently audited VCAS and ViewRight solutions offer an innovative way for cable, satellite, terrestrial, IPTV, and over-the-top (OTT) operators to cost-effectively extend their networks and enable new business models. As the established trendsetter in cardless security solutions, the company uses an innovative 3-Dimensional Security approach to provide a harmonized rights platform for premium content delivery to a range of devices over new hybrid network combinations. The VCAS system architecture is divided into two parts. The head-end, located in the network operations center, manages the content encryption process so only consumers with the appropriate entitlements can receive the programming. The receiverswhether a set-top box (STB), PC, Mac, smart phone, tablet, or connected TVdecrypt and display content for different types of video delivery networks, including Digital Video Broadcasting (DVB), Internet Protocol television (IPTV), and Internet TV (also known as OTT). The system provides the tools and support digital TV operators need to address the new opportunities related to the convergence of video delivery over various types of networksmanaged or unmanagedto a multitude of devices. This convergence must include revenue protection and enhancement approach that helps service operators attract a wider range of customers. Were not the transmitters of the video; we make sure that only authorized users can watch it, and help operators protect their revenue, says Steve Christian, VP Marketing for Verimatrix.

Enterprise Linux is one of those things we just take for granted. For us, what is critical is a very solid, stable platform. Red Hat provides the mission-critical stability we require. It was simply not possible to obtain the same level of reliability and stability with other platforms. Therefore, we steered our customers toward Red Hat and said, This is the way to go.

The content security system for a major pay-TV operator is a high-availability, mission-critical system. If the content security system is not available, subscribers may be unable to watch live or on-demand content. Therefore, it is critical that our system is built on the most reliable OS platform available. Quality of experience is of utmost important to pay-TV subscribers today, says Christian. Deploying VCAS helps ensure that if a subscriber is authorized to view certain content, he or she can view that content wherever and whenever desired. The security system also plays a critical role in enabling new business models and enhancing revenue security. A multi-layered revenue security approach allows operators to optimize the content monetization for different business objectives, delivery networks and consumer devices, within a single platform. From 2000 to 2007, Verimatrix ran on a fragmented mix of Windows Servers with SQL Server and Oracle databases, and Solaris with Oracle databases. However, customer and investor pressure to build on a more focused, stable, telco-grade platform led Verimatrix to evaluating and choosing a best-of-breed solution, consisting of Red Hat Enterprise Linux and Oracle Enterprise Database as its core platform.

In 2007, Verimatrix realized it needed to standardize on one reliable platform. At the same time, it found that customers were beginning to request Linux. New customers began demanding Linux, and we were increasingly realizing the need for an industry-standard platform, said Christian. Red Hat was chosen as the superior solution over Windows and Solaris. Christian cites Red Hats broad hardware support, excellent Oracle database support, and long-term corporate commitment as important attributes for Verimatrix. We try to choose what works well, and then we basically

build our solutions on top of that. We found that Red Hat Enterprise Linux provides the mission-critical stability that we require. Today, our core platform is 100% driven by Red Hat Enterprise Linux, said Christian. In addition, Verimatrix chose to become a Red Hat embedded partner to further enhance the security and performance of the VCAS platform software. By embedding Red Hat Enterprise Linux in the VCAS head-end, Verimatrix can package the operating system as an integral part of the VCAS product and ensure the security configuration is managed and maintained tightly. Red Hat offers the best of both worlds: We have the backing of a leader in the industry and a custom-tailored solution for our product, said Christian. In addition, as a provider of content and revenue security solutions to the pay-TV industry, Verimatrix appreciates Red Hats stellar security capabilities. It is very important for Verimatrix to tightly embed and configure a secure platform that minimizes all vulnerabilities for network attack or denial-of-service, while enabling a flexible update mechanism in the field, said Christian.

Since standardizing on Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Verimatrixs growth and success have taken off. According to Christian, at the time when the company began running solely on Linux, a handful

of startups similar to Verimatrix were competing successfully. But as of 2009, we started to pull away from the pack and have since become the market leader in IP-based and cardless content and revenue security. Christian believes that embedding Red Hat Enterprise Linux is an essential part of the companys success. He acknowledges that Verimatrix takes Red Hat Enterprise Linux for granted. Because it is so stable and secure, we dont really think about it. This allows us to have a laser focus on our core digital video security product, a luxury we didnt have when running on three different operating systems, said Christian.

In addition, Red Hat Enterprise Linux allowed Verimatrix to reach a wider range of customers than with previous OS options. Its just assumed that were running Linux. Our customers would not accept anything less, said Christian. Standardizing on Red Hat has also reduced product development and quality assurance costs by virtue of maintaining only a single, very stable platform. Today, Verimatrix has maintained its number one position as the top provider of IPTV content protection and digital rights management solutions globally.Verimatrix is ranked first globally in IPTV content protection and digital rights management. The company and has earned that accolade from the Multimedia Research Group (MRG Inc, Sunnyvale, California) for six straight years. In addition, the organization has achieved more than 600 pay-TV operator deployments in about 90 countries.

NExT STEPS
Christian is excited about the future of the pay-TV industry and the evolution of content and revenue security. Verimatrix believes the next generation of video services will not be limited by the type of network used or by the chosen consumption device. The competitive frontier for digital TV operators will be defined by transparent, yet highly effective, protection of revenue streams everywhere that services reach. Running the Verimatrix VCAS architecture on the Red Hat Enterprise Linux platform makes that possible. Our customers trust our solutions to protect their content and, ultimately, the revenue derived from their video services. And we completely trust our Red Hat Enterprise Linux platform. We run on a world-class, trustworthy, stable platformand thats a big advantage, said Christian.
