Course Description
Course Overview Introduction to Project Management for design and construction processes. Elements of planning, estimating, scheduling, bidding, and contractual relationships. Computer scheduling and cost control. Critical path method. Design and construction activities. Field supervision. This course is designed to acquaint students with the principles and processes involved in managing design and construction projects. Project managers fulfill many roles on projects that require skills in coordination and communication in addition to technical skills. Moreover, an effective project manager should have a solid understanding of engineering economic fundamentals and the legal aspects that may impact their projects or profession. Upon completing the course, a student should be able to: Understand the stages of the design and construction process Apply fundamental engineering economic analyses to calculate present/future worth, rates of return, depreciation and income taxes on projects Develop project schedules and perform scheduling calculations Analyze project progress in terms of earned value Understand fundamental concepts regarding construction contracts, negotiation and dispute resolution Appreciate the importance of labor and safety issues

Group Project: Teams of 4 students each will be assigned to write and present a paper on one of the following three broad topics as they pertain to construction practice: 1. Innovation 2.
