Brie Gonda Mr. Newman English 101: Rhetoric 16 October 2013 Cloudy With a Chance of Bad Creativity Parents read to their children with hopes of teaching them to use their imagination. One of the books that many people remember is the age-old book by Judi and Ron Barrett, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs. Pixars version of Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs and its sequel, starring the voices of Bill Hader and Anna Faris, fills the minds of children with the same type of imagination that parents were once attempting to teach. Colin Covert and Betsy Sharkey both review Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2, and neither are sold on the success of the movie. In the original story, Flint Lockwoods ingenious invention went blooey, in the words of movie critic Colin Covert. In the opening scene of Cloudy 2, just one long and drawn out minute after the end of the original Cloudy movie, viewers witness the side-effects of Lockwoods failed invention in the form of a food-laden island. Even though Sharkey believes the movie to be creative and entertaining for kids, both Covert and Sharkey agree that Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 is not a movie that parents will be overly impressed with. Colin Coverts review of Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 starts with a faint overview of what the sequel has in store. He says that the movies diction can be described as a pun-laden parlance. Covert suggests that had the movie audience only been children, that the movie would have been much more effective. He makes a reference to the most memorable joke in the movie, theres a leek in my boat and says that the only positive reaction that will be seen

is the one from the kids. Betsy Sharkey makes a similar comment about the movie being unentertaining to parents. Sharkey believes that as long as parents do not mind the undercooked plot, they will enjoy seeing their children laughing. Though Sharkey and Covert agree on some things, they disagree on the majority of the points they make in their reviews. One of the things that they do not see eye-to-eye is whether the movie can be seen as creative. Covert focuses mainly on the opinion that a movie is an innocuous time-waster. He touches on the lack of invention and creativity and states that some of the content will not translate to the grade-school target audience. Sharkey says that the completely zany creations are what make the movie. She discusses and explains the sheer creativity of the movie by giving clear examples of the organic mash-ups that are found frequently within the movie. Covert looks at the movie through a narrow, adult-oriented view while Sharkey attempts to put herself in the shoes of the target audience while she is making her judgments. Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs and its sequel is undoubtedly geared towards children and regardless of if the audience is made up fully of under-aged viewers, everyone is most likely going to appreciate the movie in one way or another. Covert and Sharkey both make valid arguments when it comes to how much each observer is going to enjoy the movie. They both took multiple areas in the film to form their own opinion before compositing the reviews. Sharkey believes that the many areas of Cloudy 2 makes for some pretty delicious family fun and almost guarantees that every part of the family will be entertained whether it be by the content of the movie or merely by their munchkins reaction to the dull and dry humor. Covert is convinced that grownups will not get much pleasure from the corny and facile jokes.

Though Covert and Sharkey both have different point of views, they seem to agree that the film will be a family smash on some level (Covert). Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 is an interesting film that does exactly what it has set out to do: entertain its audience. Aside from the dry humor, the movie will keep the attention of children and the parents will enjoy seeing their children laugh, if the movie fails to interest them. Covert and Sharkey both make effective points in their reviews of the movie, taking many components to support their opinion. Though reviewers dont have many overly positive things to say about the movies creativity, viewers can agree that Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 is an out-of-the-box, family-fun film worth seeing.
