WASTEWATER RECLAMATION FOR ENVIRONMENTAL, PUBLIC, AGRICULTURAL OR INDUSTRIAL PURPOSES. Due to the combined effects of the climate change and the growth in population, many small to medium communities are now experiencing water shortages. Another problem that these communities are facing is the discharge of poor quality waters from wastewater treatment plants into surface waters and groundwater. To save valuable drinking water, treated wastewater can be reused for a wide range of applications: Our Company, Concorde Water Supplies Ltd. is a forefront runner in technologies for Reclaiming Water for Beneficial Reuse (RWBR). RWBR is wastewater that has been treated to a high standard that can be reused in applications such as: toilet flushing, landscape irrigation (golf courses), agricultural irrigation, industry, fire protection and groundwater recharge. Depending on the end use, CWS applies a combination of treatment technologies to ensure compliance with the country regulation and achieve the required standards in terms of water quality. For small to medium Communities (50m3/d to 500m3/d), CWS, in partnership with a South Korean Company, have developed a Lagoons Membranes system for RWBR purposes. This new type of wastewater treatment combines the benefits of a natural system (lagoons) with a decentralized, highly technical MBR (Membrane Bio Reactor) system. 1. Wastewater Lagoons Naturally aerated wastewater lagoons are simple treatment systems applied all over the world, especially in rural regions that cannot be connected to a sewer main from a large WWTP. The main problem of these lagoons is that, generally, no final clarification and return of biomass is applied, which results in low biomass concentration (20-25 mg/l). In conventional activated sludge systems, the biomass concentration is 3,000-5,000 mg/l. Due to the low biomass concentration in lagoons, the specific volume reaction rate is low and large volumes are necessary to receive a sufficient effluent quality. For lagoons without artificial aeration a large surface area is necessary for oxygen transfer to occur via the surface only. To cover the oxygen demand for aerobic wastewater treatments, a specific surface area of 10-15 m/inhabitant or 4-6 g BOD/(mxd) is needed. In case of overloading or to reduce the surface area and volume of wastewater lagoons, artificial aeration is a method of upgrading (aerated lagoons). The oxygen supply is not longer restricted to the surface. But energy is needed for blower driving and artificial aeration increases maintenance and operation. 2. Membrane Technology Membrane filtration is an old technology. It is a simple filtration step that can be applied in various fields. Depending on the permeation mechanism (pore size or diffusion) and aggregate condition (liquid or gaseous) membranes can, among others, be used in liquid/liquid separation for reverse osmosis (desalinisation) and filtration ranging from nanofiltration to microfiltration. In the latter solvent and low molecular substances can pass as permeate, colloids and partly macro molecules are retained. The filtration process needs a transmembrane pressure difference, which is either achieved by pumps or vacuum. Problems of the conventional dead end flow are mainly related to clogging of the membrane surface due to the creation of filter cakes.

3. Advanced Wastewater treatment process incorporating a combined Lagoons - MBR system To achieve the standards required, CWS a combination of treatment technologies as follows: Flow equalization: enhances the biological and chemical wastewater treatment processes; Advanced wastewater processes: incorporating biological nutrient removal (BNR) for the removal of Phosphorous and Nitrogen. Phosphorous and Nitrogen occur in Wastewater as a byproduct of human/animal digestion. In the aquatic environment, phosphorous promotes the growth of algae and other plants that can suffocate lakes, streams and any other receiving waters by depleting oxygen from these water systems. This in turns deprive fish and other water life of oxygen. Nitrogen in the form of ammonia is toxic to aquatic life. BNR is a wastewater treatment process that removes these nutrients from the wastewater and reduces the environmental impact on receiving water bodies. Membrane Technologies: are increasingly being used in treatment of wastewater for reclamation. CWS uses the latest proven technology of Submerged Membrane Bioreactors (MBRs) as a filter for separating treated effluent from the biomass used to break down nutrients. Domestic or municipal wastewater is fairly predictable in quality and quantity, which makes it ideal for reuse purposes: CWS systems use MBRs for filtration and typically replace the solids separating function of a secondary clarifier and and effluent filtration system, such drastically reducing the construction costs of the Wastewater Treatment Plant! MBRs use standard anaerobic and aerobic biological processes to facilitate the removal of nitrogen compounds. Phosphorous is typically removed via chemical precipitation. Typically, CWS use the following processes:

1. Wastewater enters a series of sedimentation ponds where primary settling occurs; 2. Wastewater is then pumped to a series of lagoons where aeration and biological processes occur; 3. Wastewater is then filtered from the lagoons through a series of MBRs cartridges to remove the particulate matter ; 4. The treated effluent is then redirected to a stormwater detention pond from where the reclaimed water is used for reclamation. Depending on the end use of the water, additional treatments can be put in place.

4. Advantages of CWS combined Lagoons - MBR systems True to our commitment (www.concordewater.com), CWS continuously seek the latest proven technologies available with the view to develop and implement solutions that are Environmentally, Technologically and Financially reliable and sustainable. Due to our commitment to Quality, CWS only use the best hollow fiber MBRs in the world. Unlike other existing MBR processes, the combined Lagoon - MBR systems developed by CWS offer the following advantages: 4.1 Environmental advantages: Allows to close local water cycle; Allows to recycle water for irrigation purposes; Provide a very good visual integration in rural areas landscapes; Minimizes the loss of wastewater and salinisation because of high evaporation rates due to the large surface areas of wastewater lagoons; retention of pathogenic bacteria without additives by ultrafiltration only; by reducing the lagoon surface reduction of evaporation losses to a minimum; increase of biomass up to 15 g/l; operation possible without nitrification; reduction of carbon only (nutrients in irrigation water helps to cut down on artificial fertilizer); operation possible with de / nitrification for surface water protection; When the treated effluent is discharged in surface water bodies, it allows to keep a baseflow in streams that would otherwise dry off otherwise; Running costs are minimal, hence sparing electricity consumption.

4.2 Technical and Financial advantages: Reduces the construction costs by comparison to more conventional Waste Water Treatment Plants; Produces large quantities of high quality irrigation water with low salinity; decentralised treatment allows application in rural areas, Reduction of the maintenance by comparison to other MBR system by using air scouring and cross flow filtration from the bottom (which keeps the covering layer at a constant level) or immersed cleaning to reduce and remove the creation of filter cakes by which greatly facilitate the maintenance of the system;. Uses only gentle transmembrane pressures, such reducing the running costs and prolonging the membranes Life; Cost Effective modification of existing facilities to meet increasingly more stringent requirements for effluent discharge permits.
