At funeral ceremonies slaves or servants attended the funeral dressed as Pluto or Charon who were the gods of the dead.

Story Time!
Although Pluto was brother of Jupiter, yet none of the goddesses would condescend to marry him, owing to the deformity of his person, joined to the darkness of his mansions. Enraged at this reluctance in the goddesses, and mortified at his want of issue, Pluto ascended his chariot, and drove to Sicily, where chancing to discover Proserpine with her companions gathering flowers in a valley of Enna, near mount Aetna, the grisly god, struck with her charms, instantly seized her, and forcing her into his chariot, went rapidly off to the river Chemarus, through which he opened himself a passage to the realms of night. Orpheus says, this descent was made through the Cecropian cave in Attica, not far from Eleusis.

Examples in Art
Major artists who produced works depicting Pluto include: Drer, Abduction of Proserpine on a Unicorn (1516), etching (pictured under Medieval and Renaissance literature above). Drer's first English biographer called this work "a wild, weird conception" that "produces a most uncomfortable, shuddering impression on the beholder."[236] The source or significance of the unicorn as the form of transport is unclear; Drer's preparatory drawing showed a conventional horse. Pluto seems to be presented in a manner that recalls the leader of the Wild Hunt.[237] Caravaggio, Jupiter, Neptune, and Pluto (Italian Giove, Nettuno e Plutone, ca. 1597), a ceiling mural (pictured under Theogonies and cosmology above) intended for viewing from below, hence the unusual perspective. Caravaggio created the work for a room adjacent to the alchemical distillery of Cardinal Francesco Maria Del Monte, his most important patron. The three gods hover around a translucent globe that represents the world: Jupiter with his eagle, Neptune holding a bident, and Pluto accompanied by a bluish-gray horse and a Cerberuswho resembles a three-headed border collie more than a hellhound. In addition to personifying the classical elements air, water, and earth, the three figures represent "an allegory of theapplied science of alchemy".[138] Brueghel the Elder, Orpheus before Pluto and Proserpina (1604), painting.[238] Bernini, Pluto and Proserpina (162122), also known as The Rape of Proserpina, sculpture with a Cerberus looking in three different directions. [239] Rembrandt, Abduction of Proserpina (ca. 1631), painting influenced by Rubens (via the engraving of his student Pieter Soutman).[240] Rembrandt's leonine Pluto draws on Claudian's description of the god as like a ravening lion. However, in ancient Rome, people were afraid of saying Plutos name because they were afraid to get Plutos attention, which would result in being dragged to the Underworld where they would not be able to return.
