Blood Blood Groups Groups

An adult human has about 46 liters of blood circulating in the body. Among other things, blood transports oxygen to various parts of the body.

What are blood groups?

The discovery of human blood groups was made in 1901 by the famous Austrian scientist Dr. Karl Landsteiner. For this discovery he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1930. A blood group is a particular type of blood that may not match with other blood types when given in a blood transfusion. The blood group you belong to depends on what you have inherited from your parents. Blood groups differ from person to person. There are four main blood groups: O , A, B and AB. When a person receives a blood transfusion, the blood groups need to be carefully matched to make sure that they are compatible. The following table will show us different blood donor types.

Recipient O O+ A A+ B B+ AB AB+

Donor O O+ A A+ B B+ AB AB+

From the table you can make the following observations. People with blood type AB+ can receive blood from any person, as their blood group is compatible with every other blood group. People with blood type O- can receive blood from no other blood group except their own. Lastly, people with O- blood group are universal donors and can have their blood transfused into a person with any blood group.

Who Has Which Blood Type?
