Row 2: 1 shell in ch-2 space of each shell, end 1 dc in turning-ch, ch 3, turn. Repeat Row 2 having 6 (7-8-9) shells across for pat, working 4 (4-5-6) more rows, omit turning-ch at end of last row. Fasten off, leave end for marker. Front: Work same as back, do not fasten off, ch 3 at end of last row. Golden Pullover
From Woman's Day Granny Squares, Unknown Date SIZE: Girls' size 6 to 8. Garment width around underarms, about 27"; length from lower edge to shoulders, 14". (Note: To make smaller sizes, use size F or E hooks.) GAUGE: Mini square = 3"; small = 3-3/4"; Medium = 4-1/2"; large = 5-1/4" MATERIALS: Sport yarn, 2 oz each of yellow (A), dark orange (B), brown (C), mustard (D), light orange (E). Crochet hook size G, or size required to work to gauge. SQUARES: Make 24 squares as follows: 4 mini, 2 small, 10 medium, 8 large. Vary colors at random for first 3 rnds, then continue with color used in Rnd 3 for small, medium, and large. MINI SQUARE: Ch 4, join with a sl st to form ring. Rnd 1: Ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), 13 dc in ring; join with sl st to top of starting ch 3. Rnd 2: Change color, ch 3 (counts as first dc), 1 dc in same st as ch 3, * 2 dc I n next dc, repeat from * around--28 dc; join. Rnd 3: With next color working in back lps of sts, join, ch 5 (counts as dc, ch 2), and dc in any dc (corner), * dc in next st, hdc in next st, sc in each of next 2 sts, hdc in next st, dc in next st, (dc, ch 2, dc) in next st, repeat from * around ending with dc, hdc, 2 sc, hdc, and dc for last side, sl st in 3rd of starting ch. SMALL SQUARE: Work same as for mini square through Rnd 3. Rnd 4: Sl st to any corner ch 2 sp, ch 3 (counts as first dc), dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in same sp, * dc in each of next 8 sts, 2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc in next corner sp, repeat from *, end dc in each of next 8 sts, sl st in top of ch 3. MEDIUM SQUARE: Work as for small square through Rnd 4. Rnd 5: With same color as Rnd 4, work as for Rnd 4. LARGE SQUARE: Work as for medium square through Rnd 5. Rnd 6: Work as for Rnd 4.

ASSEMBLING: Assemble the back, front and sleeves as shown in the diagram. Right side facing overcast all the squares together on wrong side to form each section; do not join sections. Right side facing, join color B at top of front neck edge. Row 1: Work 1 dc in each st across, ch 2; turn. Row 2: Repeat Row 1. Fasten off. Rows 3 and 4: With E, repeat Rows 1 and 2. Rows 5 and 6: With C, repeat Rows 1 and 2. Fasten off. Before setting in the sleeves, work 2 strips: With A, ch 51. Row 1: Starting in 4th st from hook, work 1 dc in each st across; ch 3, turn. Row 2: Dc in each dc; turn. Rows 3 and 4: With C, repeat Rows 1 and 2. Repeat Rows 1 through 4 twice more. Sew the side seam of the sweater together, next sew one strip to top of each sleev, sew sleeve seams, then sew the sleeves to the body. With D, work 1 rnd hdc around entire neckline, then 1 rnd dc. Repeat on wrist of each sleeve and lower edge.
