Jack Frost Sport Yarn; Size 3 Crochet Hook Note: The directions are the same for the adult and child. The yarn weight and hook size will make the difference in the sizing. Front: With Color A, Ch 3, join with a slip stitch to form a ring. Round 1: Ch 3, 1 5 dc in the ring, join with a slip stitch to the top of the Ch 3. Round 2: Ch 5, 1 dc in the same st (the top of the Ch 3), working around, * 1 dc, Ch 2, 1 dc in the 2nd dc, repeat from the * 6 times, join with a slip st to the 3rd Ch (of the Ch 5). End off. Cut the yarn. Weave the ends through the back of the work. Attach Color B to any Ch 2 space. Round 3: Ch 3, 3 dc under the same Ch 2 space, * Ch 1, 4 dc under the next Ch 2 space, repeat from the * 6 times, ending with Ch 1, join with a slip stitch to the top of the Ch 3. Note:To hold back the last loop of a dc; yarn over the hook, insert the hook into the stitch, yarn over the hook and pull through the work (there are 3 loops on the hook), yarn over the hook and pull through 2 loops; there is now an extra loop from the dc to be used later. End off Color B. The piece will measure 4-inches wide for the adult, 3 inches wide for the child. NOTE: The motifs and connecting lattice work will be out of shape. This will be corrected when the piece is blocked. Motifs: Row 1: Attach Color C to any Ch 4 space, Ch 3, 3 dc under the Ch 4 space, Ch 2, 4 dc under the same Ch 4 space. Row 2: Ch 1, turn, 1 sc in the 2nd dc, Ch 3, 1 dc in each of the next 2 dc, 4 dc under the Ch 2 space, Ch 2,4 dc under the same Ch 2 spare, holding back the last loop of each dc work 1 dc in each of the next 3 dc (there are 4 loops on the hook), yarn over and pull through all 4 loops. Row 4: Ch 1, turn, 1 sc in the 4th dc, Ch 3, 1 dc in each of the next 2 dc, (skip the last dc), 3 dc under the Ch 1 space, holding back the last loop of each dc work 1 dc in each of the 2nd, 3rd and 4th dc's, yarn over and pull through all 4 loops. Row 5: Ch 1, turn, 1 sc in the 4th dc, Ch 3, holding back the last loop of each dc work 1 dc in each of the next 2 dc, yarn over and pull through 3 loops. End off. Work 1 motif in each Ch 4 loop. Always start Row 1 from the right side. Connecting Lattice Work: Attach Color B to the left side of a motif (the Ch 1 stitch above the last dc of Row 1). Row 1: Ch 2, 1 dc in the top of the 2nd dc of Round 4 (between the 2 motifs), Ch 1, 1 sc in the top of the Ch 3 of the second motif (the 2 motifs are now connected). Row 2: Ch 3, 1 sc in the sc at the beginning of Row 3 (on the right side of the 2nd motif), Ch 2, turn, 1 dc in the dc of the row below, Ch 2, 1 sc in the 2nd dc at the beginning of Row 2 (on the first motif). Repeat Row 2 until the strap (not including the dc round) measures 4 inches for the Adult Size, about 2 (2, 21/2) for the Child's Size. End off. Work the right strap to correspond. Sides - Right Armhole: Skipping the 5 dc below the right strap and the next 6 dc, attach Color A to the 3rd dc of the 4 dc. Row 1: Ch 3, 1 dc in each dc to the bottom right corner, 1 dc in the corner Ch 2 space. Small Size end off.

Medium and Large Size Row 2: Ch 3, turn, 1 dc in the 2nd dc, 1 dc in each dc up the side (do not work in the Ch 3). Medium and Large size end off. Left Armhole: Attach color A to the bottom left Ch 2 corner space. Row 1: Ch 3, 1 dc in each dc up to the 2nd group of 4 dc, 1 dc in each of the 4 dc, 1 dc in the next dc. Small Size end off. Medium and Large Size Row 2: Ch 3, turn, 1 dc in the 3rd dc, 1 dc in each remaining dc, 1 dc in the Ch 3. Medium and Large Size end off. Lattice Work Side: Attach Color 8 to the bottom left corner. Row 1: *Ch 3, skip 1 dc, 1 sc in the next dc, repeat from the * up the side. Row 2: Ch 3, turn, 1 sc under the first Ch 3 space, * Ch 3, 1 sc under the next Ch 3 space, repeat from the * across, ending with Ch 3, 1 sc under the last Ch 3 space. Repeat Row 2 once for the small size, twice for the Medium Size and 5 times for the Large Size. End off, leaving about a 3 yard piece of yarn. Do not work the lattice work on the right side of the piece. Back: Work the back exactly the same as the front. Connecting Side Row: Place the 2 side edges together, side by side, with the wrong sides together. Pick up the 3 yard piece of Color B. Ch 1, 1 sc in the first dc (of the top side piece), Ch 1, 1 sc under the first Ch 3 space (of the bottom piece), * Ch 1, skip 1 dc, 1 sc in the next dc (of the top side piece), Ch 1, 1 sc under the next Ch 3 space, repeat from the * across the side. Repeat for the other side. Bottom Section: Attach Color A to the first stitch of the lattice work side. Round 1: Ch 3, * 1 dc under each row of lattice work, 2 dc under the next dc; for the Medium and Large Sizes 2 dc under the next dc; 1 dc in the corner, 1 dc in each dc across, 1 dc in the corner, 2 dc under the next dc; for the Medium and Large Sizes 2 dc under the next dc; working around, repeat from the * around, join with a slip stitch to the top of the Ch 3. Round 2: Ch 3, 1 dc in each dc around, join with a slip stitch to the top of the Ch 3. Repeat Round 2 three more times for the Adult Size, once more for the Small Child, twice more for the Medium Child and three times more for the Large Child. End off. Attach Color C to the top of the Ch 3. Round 3: Ch 1, 1 sc in each dc around, join with a slip stitch to the Ch 1.

Picot Round 4: Ch 1, 1 sc in each of the next 2 sc, * Ch 3, 1 sc in the left side (the front and back loops) of the sc just worked, skip 1 sc, 1 sc in each of the next 3 sc, repeat from the * around, join with a slip stitch. End off. Finishing: Sew the shoulder seams. Armholes: With Color C work 1 round of sc around the armhole, spacing as necessary to keep the work flat. Work picot Round 4 with Color C. Repeat for the other side. Neck: With Color C, work 1 round of sc around the neckline, spacing as necessary to keep the work flat. Work the picot Round 4 around the neckline. Block.

Closed Knit Back: With Color A, cast on 68, (78, 82) stitches. Row 1: K 1, P 1, in ribbing across the row. Repeat Row 1 until the piece measures the same length as the front to the bottom of the armhole. Always keeping the ribbed pattern, bind off 4 (5, 6) stitches at the beginning of the next 2 rows. Armholes: Decrease 1 stitch each side every row until 42, 48, 52 stitches remain. Work even until the armhole measures 1 inch above the top of the front square for the adult, and the same length as the front square for the child. Work across 1 0 stitches, bind off the center 22 (28, 32) stitches, work across the last 1 0 stitches. Attach another piece of yarn, and working on both sides at once, work even in ribbing until the piece measures the same length as the front. Bind off. HAT HAT: Using leftover yarn, make 5 squares of 4 round each of the Granny Square pattern listed below. (Rounds 1-4 of the granny). Using desired color, attach yarn to any ch-2 corner space. Round 5: 2 sc under the corner ch-2, 1 sc in each of the 3 dc of the corner, * 1 sc under the ch 1, 1 sc in each of the next 3 dc, repeat from the * twice, repeat from the beginning of the Round 3 times, join with slip stitch to the first sc. Work Round 5 around each square. To pin the squares - Hold the wrong sides together of squares. Attach desired color to the 2nd sc (of the 2 sc in the corner). Using the back loop only of each side, sc across. Join 1 square to each side of the 5th square. The center square is the top of the hat. Fold the 4 sides down, and join. Using desired colors, work 3 rounds of sc around the bottom of the hat. GRANNY SQUARE: NOTE: Color A is the main color of the top.
