SYLLABUS 5EC2 LINEAR INTEGRATED CIRCUITS


UNIT 1: OPERATIONAL AMPLIFIERS: Basic Differential Amplifier Analysis, Single Ended and Double Ended Configurations, Op-Amp Configurations with Feedback, Op-Amp Parameters, Inverting and Non-Inverting Configuration, Comparators, Adder. UNIT 2: OPERATIONAL AMPLIFIER APPLICATIONS: Integrator, Differentiator, and Voltage to Frequency & Frequency to Voltage Converters. Oscillators: Phase Shift, Wien Bridge, Quadrature, Square Wave, Triangular Wave, Sawtooth Oscillators. Voltage Controlled Oscillators. UNIT 3: ACTIVE FILTERS: Low Pass, High Pass, Band Pass And Band Reject Filters, All Pass Filter, Switched Capacitor Filter, Butterworth Filter Design, and Chebyshev Filter Design. UNIT 4: PHASE-LOCKED LOOPS: Operating Principles of PLL, Linear Model of PLL, Lock Range, Capture Range, Applications of PLL as FM Detector, FSK Demodulator, AM Detector, Frequency Translator, Phase Shifter, Tracking Filter, Signal Synchronizer and Frequency Synthesizer, Building Blocks of PLL, LM 565 PLL. UNIT 5: LINEAR ICs: Four Quadrant Multiplier & its Applications, Basic Blocks of Linear IC Voltage Regulators, Three Terminal Voltage Regulators, Positive and Negative Voltage Regulators. The 555 Timer as Astable and Monostable Multivibrators. Zero Crossing Detector, Schmitt Trigger.

Course Plan 5EC2-Linear Integrated Circuits

OBJECTIVE
The objective of this course is to familiarize the students with concepts related to the operation analysis of linear integrated circuits like op-amp741, 555 timer, 565. Unit 1 is aimed at basics of differential amplifier using BJT/FET in different configuration and their analysis, operational amplifier IC and its parameters, analysis of different configuration and operating modes like inverting, non-inverting and differential. Application of op-amp like adder, comparator, Subtractor. Unit 2 is aimed at application as well as design of Integrator, Differentiator, Phase Shift, Wien Bridge, Quadrature, Square Wave, Triangular Wave, Sawtooth Oscillators. Using operational amplifier IC 741. And also study of Voltage Controlled Oscillators, Voltage to Frequency & Frequency to Voltage Converters Unit 3 is aimed at design of active filters using operational amplifier IC such as LPF, HPF, BPF, BSF, APF filters. And also study of switched capacitor filter. Unit 4 is aimed at basics of phase locked loops and their applications, which include operating principles of PLL, Linear Model of PLL, Lock Range, Capture Range, Applications of PLL as FM Detector, FSK Demodulator, AM Detector, Frequency Translator, Phase Shifter, Tracking Filter, Signal Synchronizer and Frequency Synthesizer, Building Blocks of PLL, LM 565 PLL Unit 5 is aimed at linear ICs four quadrant multiplier & its applications, basic blocks of linear IC voltage regulators, three terminal voltage regulators, and positive and negative voltage regulators. The 555 timer as astable and monostable multivibrators. Zero crossing detector, schmitt trigger.

EXPECTED OUTCOMES
By the end of the course, students are expected to know and understand the concepts related to the operational amplifier IC, PLL, 555 Timer IC etc. They are able to design various circuits using different analog ICs. Students are expected to design various oscillators using op-amp. They are also able to design filters of any order using op-amp IC. Students are expected to design circuits which provide accurate time delays using 555 Timer IC. They are also able to design power supply using regulator IC.

OPERATIONAL AMPLIFIERS Q.1 Draw the schematic diagram of non-inverting op-amp with voltage series feedback; explain it and derive the expression for the Voltage Gain Q.2 Write short notes on: - Op-amp parameters Q.3 Explain the use of op-amp when it is used as voltage follower. OPERATIONAL AMPLIFIER APPLICATIONS Q.1 Design RC phase shift oscillator so that f0 = 200Hz. The op-amp is 741C and supply voltages = 15V. Q.2 Design a wein bridge oscillator for generate oscillations in a local oscillator, operating at IF frequency =935Hz. Let the signal frequency is 65 KHz. Q.3 Explain the working of quadrature oscillator with suitable diagram. ACTIVE FILTERS Q.1 With the help of circuit diagram, give complete analysis of first order low pass Butterworth filter. Also draw its frequency response. Q.2 What are the main advantages of active filters? Do they have any limitations? If yes, enumerate if not, why not? Q.3 With the help of circuit diagram, give complete analysis of first order high pass Butterworth filter. PHASE-LOCKED LOOPS Q.1 Define the following with respect to PLL:a) Capture range b) Lock Range c) Pull in range Why capturer range always smaller than the lock range. Q.2 A PLL has a free running frequency of 500 KHz and between of the LPF is 10 KHz. Will the loop acquire lock for an input signal of 600 KHz. Justify your answer? Assume that phase detector produces sum and difference frequency. Find the change in d.c control voltage Vc at lock, if signal frequency fS =10 KHz, fO free running frequency is 10.5 KHz and V/F transfer coefficient of VCO is 5 KHz/V.
