Communicating Christ
to the Digital Continent
Fr Anthony Charanghat
n his address to the participants of the Plenary Assembly of the Pontifical Council for
Social Communicaons, Pope Francis reminded them that this year's celebraon of World
Communications Day coincides with the fiftieth anniversary of the Conciliar Decree Inter
Mirifica. He stated that this Decree expresses the Churchs attentiveness towards the new
modern instruments in the communicaon media and the need to incorporate these into the
work of evangelisaon. In the last few decades, the various means of social communicaon have
evolved signicantly, and the Churchs concern is to use these new forms and expressions in
communicang Christ to the digital connent.
Explaining the reason for this orientaon, the Pope quoted Benedict XVI's Message for the
2013 World Communicaons Day: The world of social communicaons, more and more, has
become a 'living environment' for many, a web where people communicate with each other,
expanding the boundaries of their knowledge and relaonships. Pope Francis elaborated that
Church communicaons through the use of social networking is to understand how to enter
into dialogue with the men and women of today, in order to appreciate their desires, their
doubts and their hopes and help them to meet Christ."
This is all the more urgent because many feel let down by a Chrisanity that appears sterile,
struggling precisely to communicate the depth of meaning that faith gives. It is evident today, in
the age of globalisaon, there is a growing sense of disorientaon and isolaon; there is also an
increasing loss of meaning to life, an inability to connect with a home, and a struggle to build
meaningful relaonships. It is therefore important to know how to dialogue, and how to enter,
with discernment, into the environments created by new technologies, into social networks, in
such a way as to reveal a presence that listens, converses, and encourages.
A valuable piece of advice enunciated by Pope Francis in his address was that we should not
be afraid to be this presence, expressing our Chrisan identy as we become cizens of this
'environment' of the web. A Church that follows this path learns how to walk with everybody! An
ancient rule of Chrisan pilgrims says, "Any one accompanying a pilgrim must walk at the same
pace as the pilgrim, not ahead and not lagging behind." This precisely explains his statement that
a Church that accompanies the journey knows how to walk as people walk today.
He pointed out that the challenge we all face together in this environment of social
communicaons, is not principally technological, but the ability to walk with the pilgrim through
life, as Jesus walked with the pilgrims of Emmaus, warming their hearts and leading them to the
Lord. Are we capable of communicang the face of a Church which can be a home to everyone?
We talk about the 'Church behind closed doors'. But evangelisaon is more than a Church with
open doors. It is walking with others through the open door of the Church, enabling them to
nding a home, building a home, building the 'Church'.
He cautioned against the temptation to use the means of social communication as a
manipulave technique to theologically brainwash people into religion, which leads to a nominal
encounter, and not an involved encounter with the Live Person of Christ. The challenge of
communicang Christ to the digital connent is to lead to a personal rediscovery, through means
of social communicaon as well as by personal contact, of the beauty which is at the heart of our
existence and our journey, the beauty of faith, the beauty of the encounter with Christ.

Poncal Council for Social Communicaons

D
ear Brothers and Sisters,
As the 2013 World Communicaons Day draws
near, I would like to oer you some reecons on
an increasingly important reality regarding the way
in which people today communicate among themselves. I
wish to consider the development of digital social networks
which are helping to create a new 'agora', an open public
square in which people share ideas, informaon and
opinions, and in which new relaonships and forms of
community can come into being.
These spaces, when engaged in a wise and balanced
way, help to foster forms of dialogue and debate which,
if conducted respecully and with concern for privacy,
responsibility and truthfulness, can reinforce the bonds
of unity between individuals and eecvely promote the
harmony of the human family. The exchange of informaon
can become true communicaon, links ripen into friendships,
and connecons facilitate communion. If the networks are
called to realise this great potenal, the people involved in
them must make an eort to be authenc, since in these
spaces, it is not only ideas and informaon that are shared,
but ulmately our very selves.
The development of social networks calls for commitment;
people are engaged in building relaonships and making
friends, in looking for answers to their quesons and being
entertained, but also in nding intellectual smulaon
and sharing knowledge and know-how. The networks are
increasingly becoming part of the very fabric of society,
inasmuch as they bring people together on the basis of these
fundamental needs. Social networks are thus nourished by
aspiraons rooted in the human heart.
The culture of social networks and the changes in the
means and styles of communicaon pose demanding
challenges to those who want to speak about truth and
values. Oen, as is also the case with other means of social
communicaon, the signicance and eecveness of the
various forms of expression appear to be determined more
by their popularity, than by their intrinsic importance and
value. Popularity, for its part, is oen linked to celebrity
or to strategies of persuasion, rather than to the logic of
argumentaon. At mes, the gentle voice of reason can be
overwhelmed by the din of excessive informaon, and it
fails to aract aenon which is given instead to those who
express themselves in a more persuasive manner. The social
media thus need the commitment of all who are conscious
of the value of dialogue, reasoned debate and logical
argumentaon; of people who strive to culvate forms
of discourse and expression which appeal to the noblest
aspiraons of those engaged in the communicaon process.
Dialogue and debate can also ourish and grow when
we converse with and take seriously people whose ideas
are dierent from our own. Given the reality of cultural
diversity, people need not only to accept the existence of
the culture of others, but also to aspire to be enriched by it
and to oer to it whatever they possess that is good, true
and beauful. (Address at the Meeng with the World of
Culture, Blem, Lisbon, May 12, 2010).
The challenge facing social networks is how to be truly
inclusive; thus they will benet from the full parcipaon
of believers who desire to share the message of Jesus and
the values of human dignity which His teaching promotes.
Believers are increasingly aware that, unless the Good News
is made known also in the digital world, it may be absent
in the experience of many people for whom this existenal
space is important. The digital environment is not a parallel
or purely virtual world, but is part of the daily experience
Message of Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI for the 47

Social Networks

of many people, especially the young. Social networks
are the result of human interacon, but for their part,
they also reshape the dynamics of communicaon which
builds relaonships: a considered understanding of this
environment is therefore the prerequisite for a signicant
presence there.
The ability to employ the new languages is required,
not just to keep up with the mes, but precisely in order
to enable the innite richness of the Gospel to nd
forms of expression capable of reaching the minds and
hearts of all. In the digital environment, the wrien word
is oen accompanied by images and sounds. Eecve
communicaon, as in the parables of Jesus, must involve the
imaginaon and the aecvity of those we wish to invite to
an encounter with the mystery of Gods love. Besides, we
know that Chrisan tradion has always been rich in signs
and symbols. I think for example of the Cross, icons, images
of the Virgin Mary, Christmas cribs, stained-glass windows
and pictures in our churches. A signicant part of mankinds
arsc heritage has been created by arsts and musicians
who sought to express the truths of the faith.
In social networks, believers show their authencity by
sharing the profound source of their hope and joy: faith
in the merciful and loving God revealed in Christ Jesus.
This sharing consists not only in the explicit expression of
their faith, but also in their witness, in the way in which
they communicate choices, preferences and judgements
that are fully consistent with the Gospel, even when it is
not spoken of specically. (Message for the 2011 World
Communicaons Day). A parcularly signicant way of
oering such witness will be through a willingness to give
oneself to others by paently and respecully engaging
their quesons and their doubts, as they advance in their
search for the truth and the meaning of human existence.
The growing dialogue in social networks about faith and
belief conrms the importance and relevance of religion in
public debate and in the life of society.
For those who have accepted the gi of faith with an open
heart, the most radical response to mankinds quesons
about love, truth and the meaning of life quesons
certainly not absent from social networks are found in the
person of Jesus Christ. It is natural for those who have faith
to desire to share it, respecully and tacully, with those
they meet in the digital forum. Ulmately, however, if our
eorts to share the Gospel bring forth good fruit, it is always
because of the power of the Word of God itself to touch
hearts, prior to any of our own eorts. Trust in the power
of Gods work must always be greater than any condence
we place in human means. In the digital environment, too,
where it is easy for heated and divisive voices to be raised
and where sensaonalism can at mes prevail, we are called
to aenve discernment.
Let us recall in this regard that Elijah recognised the
voice of God not in the great and strong wind, not in the
earthquake or the re, but in a sll, small voice. (1 Kings
19:11-12) We need to trust in the fact that the basic human
desire to love and to be loved, and to nd meaning and
truth a desire which God Himself has placed in the heart
of every man and woman keeps our contemporaries ever
open to what Blessed Cardinal Newman called the kindly
light of faith.
Social networks, as well as being a means of evangelisaon,
can also be a factor in human development. As an example,
in some geographical and cultural contexts where Chrisans
feel isolated, social networks can reinforce their sense of
real unity with the worldwide community of believers. The
networks facilitate the sharing of spiritual and liturgical
resources, helping people to pray with a greater sense of
closeness to those who share the same faith. An authenc
and interacve engagement with the quesons and the
doubts of those who are distant from the faith should make
us feel the need to nourish, by prayer and reecon, our faith
in the presence of God, as well as our praccal charity: If I
speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love,
I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. (1 Cor 13:1)
In the digital world there are social networks which oer
our contemporaries opportunies for prayer, meditaon
and sharing the Word of God. But these networks can also
open the door to other dimensions of faith. Many people
are actually discovering, precisely thanks to a contact
inially made online, the importance of direct encounters,
experiences of community and even pilgrimage, elements
which are always important in the journey of faith. In our
eort to make the Gospel present in the digital world, we
can invite people to come together for prayer or liturgical
celebraons in specic places such as churches and
chapels. There should be no lack of coherence or unity in
the expression of our faith and witness to the Gospel in
whatever reality we are called to live, whether physical or
digital. When we are present to others, in any way at all, we
are called to make known the love of God to the furthest
ends of the earth.
I pray that Gods Spirit will accompany you and enlighten
you always, and I cordially impart my blessing to all of you,
that you may be true heralds and witnesses of the Gospel.
Go into all the world and preach the Gospel to the whole
creaon. (Mk 16:15)

8 THE EXAMINER NOV 16 - 22, 2013
W
e are living in a digital
age, or as Pope Emeritus
Benedict XVI says, we
are living in the Digital
Connent. It is in this context that
we need to understand the great
commission of Mark 16, Go into all
the world and preach the gospel to
every creature.
This call to go proclaim is a call to
one and all (the Bapsed), and hence,
each of us has the invitaon and
obligaon to proclaim the Good News.
For the proclamaon of the Good News
is far from over. To quote the words of
Blessed John Paul II at the beginning of
Redemptoris Missio: The mission of
Christ the Redeemer, which is entrusted
to the Church, is sll very far from
compleon. It is the Spirit who impels
us to proclaim the great works of God:
For if I preach the Gospel, that gives me
no ground for boasng. For necessity
is laid upon me. Woe to me if I do not
preach the Gospel. (1 Corinthians 9:16)
The Kingdom aims at transforming
human relaonships; it grows gradually
as people slowly learn to love, forgive
and serve one another.
Thus, the call to make Christ known
to all is the responsibility and obligaon
of every Chrisan. The power of the
Internet must never be underesmated,
and the social media must and should
be used as the new tool to make this
message known. It is in this context
that I now present simple ps that we
can use so that Christ is proclaimed.
But rst, this requires certain
prerequisites that the Year of Faith so
wonderfully communicated:
To Know our Faith more deeply: we
are called to deepen our Knowledge
and Experience our Faith through an
encounter with Christ.
To Live our Faith more authencally:
we are called to witness and live the
challenge of discipleship in our daily
lives.
To Proclaim our Faith more
condently: we are invited to
preach Christ.
This invitaon to Faith challenges
us to bring Christ into the realm of
our daily lives, to be willing to speak
and witness to Christ even in the
cyber world.
Here are ten simple things that you
can do to proclaim Christ to the world.
1) Be a Witness, share your
Tesmony: Tell people what having a
relaonship with God means to you.
Simply state who Christ is to you.
2) Be Christ... Be posive: If you
update your Facebook status regularly,
ensure your status updates are posive
and Faith-based. Post about things and
people that you're thankful for. Or, even
name some of the ways that you've
been blessed recently. "If you don't
have something nice to say, don't say it.
Posivity, like negavity, is contagious."
3) The Word speaks; showcase it:
A good idea is to post encouraging
Scripture verses and menon how
theyve touched you.
4) Get out on your friends walls: Go
out of your way to nd old classmates
or colleagues and 'friend' them. Then
you can start building relaonships and
share the love of Christ with a wider
audience.
5) Give thanks: Try to show your
thankfulness to the Lord every day.
Post His Word to give hope, peace and
encouragement to those who visit
your page.
6) Laughter is good medicine: Share
church humour and funny illustraons

at The Examiner.

that subtly put across the point of faith.
7) Oer prayers for healing: Post a
daily Prayer. Look at the happenings in
the world and your community, and li
people and situaons in prayer. Pray for
anyone who posts a need or a sickness.
Pray with them right there through
Facebook; type the prayer out as if you
were laying hands on them. Use the
power of mulplicaon to increase the
power of prayer.
8) Keep it real: Last but not least,
humble yourself and be honest. Don't
try to be someone you aren't. Always
show a Christ-like image as you live,
learn, laugh and post.
9) Be a Curator and Circulate: Find,
follow, like, share friends' pages and
posts from inspiraonal sources (check
authencity) and those which oer
Chrisan perspecves, guidelines,
thoughts for the day or simple
anecdotes which li the heart, mind
and soul.
10) Be an E-prophet: Speak out
against all that goes against the
gospel and the culture of life; focus
on bringing Good News into the
limelight. Share stories of persons who
have made a choice for Christ and
His kingdom.
'Go Forth and Proclaim the Good
News; make disciples of all naons

media and be my witness both online
and o ine.'

s we celebrate
the World
Communicaons
Month in
November, a rethink of the
role of the print medium
in 'communicaons' and
the manner of its use and
promoon is called for.
From a broad perspecve,
the printed word per se is
the WORD made esh at
the Incarnaon, the WORD
expressed in every good
uerance and in every good
act, the WORD the Media
transmits by way of all things
nice and beauful, bringing
alive the Genesis senment
God saw that it was good.
(1:10b) Resultantly, believers
running publishing houses
and sale outlets would do
well to look at their own
set-ups not as commercial
establishments, but as
places where the WORD
meets the world, a temple
where those serving are
considered preachers, and
the sale counter a pulpit. But
the profoundest dimension
one would do well to look
at concerns the editorial
work aspect.
Brevity: the essence of
communicaon
In a world of speed when
the common man is racing
against me to make ends
meet, and simultaneously
keep abreast of what can
enrich his spirit, maintaining
an economy of words takes
on prime importance,
communicang briey,
yet fully. As is said, if you
can say in a page or a
paragraph all that you have
to, dont write two pages
or paragraphs; if you can
say it all in a sentence, do
not write a paragraph; and
if it can be said in a word,
do not write a sentence!
That is what eding is all
about. We have the example
of Blessed James Alberione
who looked at eding not as
just a ministry, but as 'the'
ministry, insisng that our
main me is dedicated to
editorial work, while other
ministries receive only
fragments of our hours.
But his asseron that the
best decoraon for an
editorial room is a picture
of the evangelists serves as
a sharp reminder to those
directly involved that we are
each called to evangelise.
The symbols of the four
gospel writers are seen as
signifying what goes into the
nal product: St Mahew:
Winged Man (Incarnaon);
St Mark: Winged Lion
(Resurrecon); St Luke:
Winged Ox (Passion); St
John: Eagle (Ascension).
Specialised strategy
Broadly, the rst step
in publishing-prinng is
symbolic of the Incarnaon
where the author conceives
an idea and fruces it in
book form. The next step is
the Resurrecon where the
evaluator of the manuscript
(MS), as far as possible
competent in the subject
being dealt with, makes a
serious study, adjudging
it as either t or unt for
publicaon, conscious of
the fact that the published
work is going to be a means
of communicang the
Word. Then follows the
Passion involved in Copy-
eding a task that is
me-consuming, and to
which not everyone can
claim to be equal. The
Copy-editor is one who has
a powerful command over
the language and is able
to sensibly defend his/her

eding of the MS. As Judith
Butcher avers, Copy-editors
need not be experts on the
subject of the work, but
must be able to interest
themselves in it in order to
try to put themselves in the
posion of the intended
reader as in keeping with
Pauls injuncon, Whatever
you do, put your heart into
it (Col 3:23a)! The good
copy-editor, Butcher adds,
is an intelligent reader and
a tacul and sensive cric;
someone who cares enough
about perfecon of detail
to spend me checking
small points of consistency
in someone elses work.
Such perfecon of detail
cannot but involve knowing
and understanding both the
similarity of terms as well
as the dierence and their
uses e.g. aloneness and
loneliness; in hand, at hand,
and on hand; ipso facto and
de facto; must, needs, etc.
Next, simple, yet as
important a task as that of
the Author, the Evaluator
and the Copy-editor, is
proof-reading, which
may be likened to the
Ascension. The proof-
reader dedicatedly checks
the transcript to ascertain
whether it is adequate
proof of the changes and
correcons eected by the
Copy-editor, before being
sent on for further acon,
inconsistencies, if any, being
brought promptly to the
noce of the Copy-editor for
obvious reasons.
The best decoration for an editorial
room is a picture of the evangelists.
- Blessed James Alberione
10 THE EXAMINER NOV 16 - 22, 2013
The message maers
Factually, the author must
be taken into condence
from the very start and kept
abreast of the progress
of the MS, the need for
the kind of changes and
correcons involved. All this
is clearly indicave of a very
important factor, the need
for consultaon, claricaon,
cohesion and collaboraon
between the Evaluator, the
Copy-editor, the Proofreader
and the Author, all four of
whom emerge as the four
evangelists in the apostolate
of communicaons.
Any semblance of one-
upmanship is best consigned
to the dustbin, for at stake is
not ego, but the importance
of the message that the
given text strives to convey
accurately and briey, and
the interests of the reader,
everything else being of
secondary importance.
I
t was a grand cathedral I went to on Thursday evening.
In fact, a cathedral with a lot of history in it, the most
interesng part being that the most famous staon in
Mumbai - Churchgate staon - was so named because when
the Brish built the fort in Mumbai, the gate which led out
towards the seaside was called Churchgate because of the
cathedral, and many hundreds of years later, when the
staon was built, it was named Churchgate.
I love cathedrals. The high walls, grand roofs and the many
memorials to people, long dead. But what I love more than
looking at a cathedral is singing in one. That is one place I
unleash myself, and sing as if I mean to wake the angels.
Whos that singing down there? asks sleepy angel, woken
up.
Bob of course, who else? says another sleepy winged
heavenly being. Hes in a cathedral, so what else would you
expect?
And so I raised my voice and sang out that evening, and
saw people smile, then turn to one another and also join in.
Cathedrals are for singing.
Many years ago, I had tried to organise a cathedral for a
famous choir to sing for Christmas.
We dont need a choir, said the trustee, a crotchety old
man who had become the trustee through his posion and

Why not? I asked, Cathedrals are for singing!
No, they are not! he insisted.
They are! I said stubbornly as the trustees eyebrows and
that of his secretary went up a notch.
Sing somewhere else! he said.
Cathedrals are for singing! I whispered.
We argued back and forth, and at the end of it, the old man
gave in.
How did you ever persuade him? asked his secretary.
I believe that cathedrals and churches were built to li
our voices for Gods glory, not just to be preserved as
monuments.
How oen that is what we do with something precious.
Instead of using it for what it is meant to be used, we
preserve it carefully so it wont get worn out.
My wife, a doctor, drives her car just a kilometre every day,
from our house to her hospital, and back. One day, her tyre
gave way.
Your tyres are all gone, said the tyrewallah, You will have
to change all of them!
But I hardly use them, said my wife.
That is the problem! said the tyrewallah, When not used,
they become useless!
I am not speaking of only cathedrals here; I speak of many
people who have been blessed with God-given talents, but
dont use them.
They are like cathedrals you see when you visit Europe,
towering all over, dingy, dirty and depressive looking.
Ghostly, lonely interiors!
Raise your voices, sing out! Let your talents, whatever
they be, rise in crescendo and ll the walls of yourself, Gods
cathedral!
Cathedrals are for singing!
Cathedrals are for Singing!

The Subtle
Inuence
of the Media
ome people are unconscious of the control media has
over their lives, while some oen fear it. They oen
feel guilty about it, but are unable to get out of this
vicious circle. Oen it is because they have found in
the media an escape from a mundane roune, and enter into
a dream world which is very pleasing to them, an idealisc
world which in reality is hardly aainable.
Today, people in most cosmopolitan cies are addicted to
their mobile phones; they just cannot do without them. And
unless prohibited to do so, they need to look at their mobiles
every three to four minutes.
The media inuences people, because the characters of
television, posters, internet, news etc are the ones which
people begin to like, imitate or consider to be superior to
others. Those in the limelight are treated as those who are
correct and put on a pedestal.
Though the media can inuence our lives, it runs only
because of investors and adversers who think that
Television is designed to entertain, to amuse, to develop

programming that will aract the greatest possible audience
at a given hour of the day. (Perlo) Their job is not to
improve social reality or to change it, but instead, to promote
products that people will buy.
Gerbners culvaon theory asserts that television and the
media is oen accepted as societys high priest and teaches
or culvates societys values, myths and moral lessons. We
know by looking at our children that they can acquire new
beliefs and behaviour paerns, simply by observing symbolic
role models, and that is why television, internet and the
media can leave a deep impression on mouldable minds.
Thus, exposure to racial, gender roles and other stereotypes
in the mass media will contribute to the development of
stereotyped beliefs, a tudes and behaviour. Television and
the internet, and what it oers today, play an important role
in the socialisaon process.
Economic eects of media: Media adversing and online
shopping are very common in cies and towns. Improved
communicaon through media has reduced travel and
transportaon costs. Instead of persons travelling to the mall,
goods are brought to the person in a disciplined courier style,
reducing costs immensely. However, the consumerist lifestyle
has got a boost because of this.
Cultural eects of media: Local and tradional culture in
many parts is being baered out of existence. Ethnic groups
and minories struggle to survive in the face of dominant
commercialised culture. Most eects are on things like
popular music, behavioural paerns and dress code and the
use of slang language. Besides, cultural transformaon also
happens to more signicant things like value systems, self-
concepts, images of others.
Polical eects of media: Mass media have signicant
polical eects, especially during roune polical processes
like elecon campaigns. It is the leaders responsibility to
alert the illiterate about how the media could manipulate the
polical system and what measures could be taken against it.
Unifying eects of media: The media has also been made
available these days to increase informaon among the
cizens, and to have protests through online signature
campaigns The website www.change.org is a wonderful
example where protests are made through online signature
campaigns. Social media networks are very inuenal in
creang awareness and ge ng people together.
Pro-social eects of the media: The educaonal and pro-
social eects of mass media represents the ip side of the
an-social programming and eects discussed.
The media has great potenal to improve our quality of life
in behaviour, dress, culture, food habits, labour habits, etc.
Various experiments conducted by experts show that
some of the television programmes exert posive eects,

Mathemacs and Science, I am
more familiar with the theories and
invenons of sciensts who not
only made a dierence in the life
of humankind, but helped to clear
misconcepons and supersons as
well. I was pleasantly surprised to
read the following words in a book of
spiritual exercises for personal growth.
I can take my telescope and look
millions of miles into space. But I can
also lay it aside and go to my room,
shut the door, get down on my knees
and see more of heaven and get closer
to God than I can be assisted by all the
telescopes and all the material things
on earth (Isaac Newton). This comes
from the man whom the Church ex-
communicated on account of his radical
ideas, which were against the teachings
of the Church at the me.
My vocaon allows me to build
edgling relaonships with the students
in school, and technology ensures that
I maintain them with some success
aer they pass out. On my birthday, a
couple of months ago, an ex-student
came over with her anc, and in the
excitement of seeing her engagement
photographs, I realised that there was a
rather unique handmade plaque on one
of her bedroom walls. It had the words:
I am third on it. When I asked her to
explain, she said, "Maam, thats my
moo of life, one I picked up from you.
It simply means: God is rst, others are
second, and I am third." That night, on

that in the rat-race we call life, I had

I would like to share them with you,
so that together we can say The Year
of Faith has caused me to change,

Christ came into the world to
establish a kingdom of jusce, love

on the yoke that Christ bears so as to
collaborate with Him in establishing His
kingdom? Do I belong to any group of
commied Chrisans who serve the
needs of the Chrisan community at
large? If not, why? Does the kingdom
of God within me radiate outwards?
Do I strive in my own way with my
own God-given talents to overcome
selshness and so reach out to Christ
in the poor? How sensive am I to the
demands of my faith? In what way do
I put my religion into pracce, besides
prayers and devoons? Does my heart
vibrate with the compassion that
Christ expressed to one and all? Do I
reach out spontaneously to the least
members of society? Do I realise the
various, somemes strange, situaons
in which I have to bear witness to
Christ? Am I strong enough not only to
stand the pressures of evil elements,
but even be a source of inspiraon
to them?
These and many more quesons
keep arising in my mind. I hope the
Lord will bless me with His grace
to answer them truthfully. For me,

increasing such behaviour as sharing,
cooperaon, resistance to temptaon,
as well as reducing verbal aggression in
behaviour and reducing stereotyping.
It also helps increase tolerance and
empathy, solidarity for the needy.
Even verbal and understanding skills
are improved just by listening and
seeing people talk.
Today, the internet is the greatest
source of knowledge, and oen visits to
physical libraries have been replaced by
browsing online for informaon. Even
if one must do research from wrien
books, informaon about where
these are found is surely looked up on
the net.
An-social eects of Media: Studies
show that too much of visual media like
the television or the internet reduces
wring skills and ability. Studies show
that wring ability and skills are directly
proporonal to reading habit. The more
you read, the beer you write.
With regard to our concern with the
eects on the moral values of people,
it has been shown that when parents
ignore the childrens development of
aggressive behaviour, the media exerts
a more powerful eect on aggressive
behaviour. Oen in families where
parents are very dominang, children
take recourse to watching violence
which they cannot express in order to
escape the oppressive behaviour in
their home.
At younger ages, children cannot
easily understand what television
portrays. They take things they see
concretely, and television or cinemac
fantasies are more real than some
actual events which could take place
e.g. Ghost and horror movies aect
children a lot more than they do adults.
These days, pornography constutes
aggressive media fare, not only among
adults, but also among minors. The
increasing violent acts by minors and
on minors speak volumes.
Increasing amounts of eroca
prevalent in the media, specially
the internet, are violent in nature,
especially against women, and research
done on male adult viewers shows
that aggressive pornography increases
male aggression against females.
Eroca culvates myths about rape and
gender roles.
Thus, the media operates and aects
children and persons always in concert
with other socialisaon agents
parents, teachers, mentors, caretakers,
peers, etc. So here is the role of the
leader in society, whether a parent, a
pastor, a religious sister, or a lay leader
in his/her sphere of service.
On Communicaons Sunday (World
Communicaons Day, November 17,
2013), we are indeed mindful of how
we are swimming, if not drowning in
the media. The internet is no more
lying on the desktop computer or the
laptop in the study; it is now palm-top!
Very reasonable oers for internet
packages by a variety of companies
with aracve discount policies make
it irresisble for any one who owns a
smart phone, or even the soon-ge ng-
outdated mobile or cell phone. Parents
oen have no or very lile control
on what their children and youth are
spending their me on, even in school,
especially if they have already given
them a smartphone.
Awareness is the key to a beer
and healthier lifestyle health not
only physically, but also spiritually
and psychologically. Just as the bliss
of ignorance is no longer desired, the
presence of knowledge in its vastness
need not lead us to degraded living. Let
us live mediated lives mediated by
the work of the Holy Spirit.

Evangelisation
in the Digital Age
NEWS.VA
Bishops from across Brazil gathered on Monday, November
4, for the start of a special seminar on Communicaon.
The meeng took place in Jaboato dos Guararapes, just
outside the central coastal city of Recife. The President of
the Poncal Council for Social Communicaons (pccs.va),
Archbishop Claudio Maria Celli, gave the opening address on
Communicaon and Evangelisaon in the Digital Age.
In it, he provided an overview of some of the most widely
used social networks today, and highlighted the online
presence of News.va, the Vacan news network which brings
together the Holy Sees media services into one place and
on various social media plaorms. The PCCS launched the
web portal in 2011 as a new media service, connected to
the papal ministry. The portal receives around 90,000 visits
per day, and many more in the social media plaorms where
it is also present, and which allow interacve engagement.
News.va is presented in ve languages (English, Spanish,
French, Italian, Portuguese), with plans in the future to add
Arabic. The reality of media convergence and the need for
parcipaon in the digital culture were other points covered
in his talk.
On the importance of exchange with other cultures,
Archbishop Celli said, We live in a mulcultural society, and we
must maintain a deep and respecul dialogue with each other,
which can be a source of enrichment in our own journey.
Regarding the topic of condent and eecve communicaon,
Archbishop Celli noted the example of Pope Francis, saying,
The Pope profoundly understands the importance of this
concept. He speaks simply and directly, also through his
gestures, which give hope to so many people.
He also underscored that the new digital arena calls
for changes in the way the Church speaks and how it
parcipates in this environment. How can we help the
Church dialogue through new technologies in the digital
culture? How can we help others encounter and get to
know the person of Jesus, if the Church is not also present
in this environment? He noted that how we communicate
can also make a dierence, and that spontaneity and
interacon are very eecve in communicaon.
The opening ceremony was aended by the President
of the Brazilian Bishops Conference (CNBB), Cardinal
Raymundo Damasceno, the President of the Conferences
Communicaons Commission, Bishop Dimas Lara Barbosa,
the director of the Italian Jesuit journal La Civilt Caolica,
Fr Antonio Spadaro SJ, and Archbishop Fernando Saburido of
Olinda and Recife. Also present were the Execuve Secretary
of the CELAM Department of Communicaon, Nuin Susana,
and numerous civil and government authories. The
meeng connued with a number of keynote lectures,
panel discussions and training sessions, and concluded on
November 8, 2013.
Walking the Talk
DR EMMANUEL DSILVA
For several years now, through his GEM e-newsleer that
reaches over 20,000 readers, Fr Felix Rebello has been
promong the twin ideas of waste segregaon at source and
converng organic waste into energy.
In July 2013, his aenon was drawn to a new arcle:
Where there is a Will, there is a Way. In the arcle, I had
described how Fr P J Joseph had reached a decision to set up a
biogas plant at this retreat house in Panchmarhi, a hill town in
Madhya Pradesh. This arcle inspired Fr Felix to go for biogas
at his new church in Panvel, an hour by train from Mumbai.
The Panvel priest recalls: It occurred to me that if kitchen
waste can be converted into biogas, it will not only solve
some of the problems we were having in composng; the
church could also save some money on the LPG cooking gas.
Fr Felix acted immediately. He wrote to me, expressing
interest in se ng up a biogas plant and invited me to visit
his new church. So with Narendra Jindal, an expert on biogas
and a friend for over three decades, I visited St Francis
Xavier Church and Polytechnic, opposite the Panvel railway
staon. Aer some discussion and walk around the site, we
suggested that the biogas system be installed on the terrace
of the church building.
The date for installaon was set for September 14. Once the
two PVC tanks of 1,500 litres and 1,000 litres were delivered,
Narendra and a local plumber set to work. By sunset, the
installaon was complete. About 150 kg of animal dung
and 150 litres of water were poured into the digester tank
to start the anaerobic process of gas producon. Methane
gas began to ow into the church kitchen, a oor below
the terrace, for the rst me on October 5. Fr Felix and his
cook, Alex, were jubilant. Says Fr Felix: Though I had heard
and read that waste can be converted into cooking gas, now
that I can see it, I am convinced that going in for biogas was
environmentally and economically a good decision.
With a capacity of 1.5 cubic metres, the biogas unit cost
Rs 26,500. The two PVC tanks were purchased for Rs 14,500;
labour and miscellaneous charges amounted to Rs 3,000.
Narendra and I waived the consultancy and installaon fee
of Rs 8,000 and donated a new biogas stove. These costs
are expected to be recovered within four years from the
substuon of four LPG cylinders per year. The nancial rate of
return, esmated at 14.8 per cent, makes it a good investment.

NOTES COMMENTS
Fr Felix hopes the story of the biogas plant will inspire his
parishioners and other Panvel residents. He has big plans:
waste water recycling, solar lighng and terrace gardening.
He wants his church terrace to serve as a model for a Clean
and Green Panvel.
Bishop Dominic Savio Fernandes will o cially inaugurate
the new biogas plant and a workshop on Energy from Waste
to Save the Environment. Both events will be held at St
Xaviers Community Centre, Panvel on Sunday, December 22
at 10:30 am. All are invited. For details, contact: 2745-5556;

Catholicism in Retreat
JUDE H GOMES
At the recently concluded Khandala Laity Retreat (October
16-20) at St Xaviers Villa, the Spiritual Director Rev Fr
Cleophas Braganza, SDB of Don Boscos Shrine, Matunga
decided to dwell on the ten sessions of Catholic Evangelist, Fr
Robert Barrons Catholicism.
This being the 108
th
year of the existence of the Khandala
Laity Retreat by, for and of the laity, Fr Cleo was the very rst
Salesian to share in this Retreat movement, that Cardinal
Simon Pimenta, whilst inaugurang the Centenary session
in 2005, said that such a Ministry should be in the Guinness
Book of Records.
A priest of the Archdiocese of Chicago and Rector at
Mundelein Seminary, Fr Barrons Catholicism is a master
work by a master teacher. In ten episodes that take the
viewer around the Catholic world, from Chartres to the slums
of Kolkata and dozens of points in between, Fr Barron lays
out the Catholic proposal in a visually stunning and engaging
series of presentaons that invites everyone into the heart of
the faith, which is friendship with Jesus Christ.
Catholicism, I can tesfy that this was a great labour of love:
love for the Lord, love for the Church, and love for the truths
the Church teaches. Yet there is nothing saccharine here,
nothing cheesy, nothing pop-trendy. Its Catholic Classic,
not Catholic Lite, but John Cummings cinematography is
so beauful, Steve Mullens original score is so fetching
(drawing on ancient chants in a thoroughly contemporary
way), and Fr Barrons narraon is so de the man has a
genius for the telling example or analogy that even the
most di cult facets of Catholic belief and pracce come alive
in a completely accessible way.
At the centre of it all is Jesus of Nazareth, posing that
unavoidable and disturbing queson: Who do you say that
I am?
Viewers of Catholicism will get to know many of the great
minds and spirits who wrestled with that queson over two
millennia Peter and Paul; Augusne and Thomas Aquinas
and Dante; Teresa of Avila and John of the Cross; Edith Stein
and Katherine Drexel.
So what led Fr Barron to create this Magnum Opus? A
young Dominican friar presented Thomas Aquinas argument
from moon for Gods existence to his freshman religion
class. He was not quite sure why this should have been the
case, but that lecture lit a re in him. He became convinced
of the reality of God in a way that he hadnt been before,
and he wanted to learn more and more about philosophy
and theology. His quest for the Truth led him to lm this 10-
part documentary, The Catholicism Project, (journeying to 16
countries to tell the story of the Church).
Not only Fr Barron, but even Fr Cleo hoped that by
concentrang, dwelling and elaborang on Catholicism,
the series and this Retreat would reach both fallen-away
Catholics, to remind them of the beauty and the truth
of Catholicism, and restoring respect for a Church that is
sll recovering from the sexual abuse scandal and baling
secularism. A handful of people did terrible things, they
both admied, but we have 2,000 years of beauty, art,
architecture, liturgy and the saints.
Catholicism was produced through a lot of blood, sweat
and tears, begging and events. Eventually, Fr Barron obtained
enough to do one trip. The cost was about $250,000 per
episode for travelling, housing, lming and eding. They
went to the Holy Land rst. It was started in 2008 and the
lming ended in 2010 with a budget of $3 million only and
a small crew. They visited 50 locaons in 16 countries. Many
have described Fr Robert as a kind of modern Fulton Sheen.
Perhaps more than any priest, he has really taken the Second
Vacan Councils call in Inter Mirica to heart, ulising every
means of communicaon to spread the truth of the Gospel.
He always had a ten-part series in mind. They lmed and
connued begging, and once they had the money, theyd
take their next trip. In the middle of the project, the economy
collapsed, and many of their donors backed out. They
connued praying, especially to the Lile Flower (St Thrse
of Lisieux), their patroness, and, in the end, they took 12 trips
to 16 dierent countries, and eventually got it done.
What struck many of the Retreatants at Khandala was the
portrayal of other Retreatants at Lough Derg in Ireland. It
was St Patricks purgatory in the Middle Ages. Theres a rocky
island in the middle of this large lake. Its a pilgrimage site
where people come for weekend retreats. When they arrive,
they remove their shoes; they stay awake, and do other
penitenal exercises. We were struck by the dedicaon and
sincerity of those Retreatants, barefooted penitents making
their way around the island and its beds of stone in dismal
cold and freezing rain.

Inter-religious dialogue
To mark the 124

year of its foundation, St John the
Evangelist High School, Marol, hosted an Inter-religious
gathering based on the theme, Together... For Peace and
Harmony on October 26, 2013.
The celebration, the first of its kind in the history of
the school, was used as a platform to promote religious
tolerance, especially because we believe that religious
values should be made known to a child right from his/
her childhood.
The gatheri ng of parents, teachers and students
listened to dignitaries from various faiths - Catholicism,
Sikhism, Jainism, Buddhism and Islam who gave powerful
insights on the message of Peace and Harmony. The
Brahmakumaris, a spiritual organisation, gave a powerful
message of Harmony and Oneness. Kirtans, bhajans,
speeches, song, music and PowerPoint presentations
were some of the highlights that added to the solemnity
of the gathering.
The dignitaries were felicitated by the Principal, Sr Tara.

Bishop reiterates the right to
catechism for children
Among the many rights to be granted to children, there
is also the right to catechism, that is to say the right to
Christian education in order to grow in faith. This was
emphasised by Msgr Prasad Gallela, Bishop of Cuddapah,
Andhra Pradesh. The Bishop explained that it is part of the
Churchs mission to ensure that every child has access to
Chrisan catechism; it is educaon through which the faith
of the child has the opportunity to grow and take root. In
recent months, social unrest in the state of Andhra Pradesh
has forced Chrisan educaonal instuons and parishes
to stop or rarefy catechism classes for children. This is why
the Bishop wanted to raise the awareness of parish priests,
catechists and even the civil authories to do everything in
order not to neglect childrens catechism.
Fr Akula Prasad, Secretary of the Diocesan Commission for
Catechesis added: We are grateful to those who provide
a valuable contribution to the smooth functioning of
catechism classes. I thank the priests, nuns and lay teachers
who carry out their work with great enthusiasm.

Pope: Solidarity
with typhoon victims
Pope Francis has sent a telegram of condolence to the
President of the Philippines, expressing his solidarity with
those aected by Typhoon Haiyan. The typhoon, one of the

people on Leyte Island, which bore the brunt of the storm.
The telegram has been signed by Archbishop Pietro
Parolin, Vacan Secretary of State.
Deeply saddened by the destrucon and loss of life caused
by the super typhoon, His Holiness Pope Francis expresses
his hearelt solidarity with all those aected by this storm

Vatican nunciature hit by
mortar; no casualties
The Vacans nunciature in Damascus was hit by a mortar
round at 6:30 am on Tuesday, November 5, damaging the
building, but neither killing nor injuring any persons.
Given the hour, there was only material damage, not to
people, Vacan press o cer Fr Federico Lombardi said in
a press conference on November 5. Had it been later, it
would have been much more dangerous. Thanks to God,
no one was hurt. The mortar hit the embassys rooop,
and according to the Associated Press, it is not clear if the
building was targeted.
Archbishop Mario Zenari, apostolic nuncio to Syria, told
Vatican Radio that we do not know why it happened
we cannot say that the Vatican Embassy was targeted.
The Assad regimes news agency, SANA, reported that
the mortar shell was fired by terrorists, the regimes
term for the Syrian rebels. SANA went on to say that
targeng the Apostolic Nunciature and diplomac missions
in Damascus comes in the framework of the terrorist
groups implemenng their backers instrucons in a bid to
inuence the stance of these missions in support of peace
and security in Syria.
As president of the Episcopal Commission of India (CBCI),
Card Oswald Gracias sent a message of solidarity to Msgr
Mario Zenari, Nuncio in Syria on behalf of the 18 million
Catholics in the country.
The message reads: We express deep sorrow and
consternaon on learning of the aack on the Nunciature
in Damascus. We admire the courage of the Nuncio Msgr
Mario Zenari who connues to stay there. It is of utmost
urgency that measures be taken to guarantee the security
and safety of the diplomac mission and its personnel.
Pope Francis has consistently appealed for peace in Syria,
taking the iniave of calling for a Global Day of Prayer for
Syria on Sept 7. Pope Francis has urged world leaders not to
plunge humanity further into a spiral of sorrow and death.
The Church in India is traumased and anguished as the
humanitarian situation in Syria continues to deteriorate
rapidly. Innocent people have been caught in the relentless
barrage from all sides, their lives destroyed and lost.
The Church in Asia agonises over the devastang impact
of the Syrian conict on women and children. The conict
exacts a heavy toll on women who suer hardship and fear
alone. The conict is a constant source of fear and anxiety
for people. Child refugees now number around one million.
Peace talks remain the only opon to resolve the Syria
crisis Dialogue can end the Syrian conict, safeguard the
lives of the people and build a viable future. The Church in
India, our 18 million Catholics, pray that the land of Syria
nds peace.

teen helped them beer live out their faith, by earning their
respect through his coherent approach to life.
Consolini said, He was not ashamed to share his
convicons with others. But those people would not make
fun of him, because they understood that his conviction
was real; they came from inside him. It was not something
arcial that should be made fun of. He was completely clean
and calm. One of the standout aributes Carlo had was his

also used his compung knowledge to create a web page that

But before sainthood, there are sll many steps ahead.
For now, the Vacan is looking into his life. If they determine

Thirty Years of the
Vatican Television Centre
Your work is a service to the Gospel and to the Church,
wrote the Holy Father to Msgr Dario Edoardo Vigano, director
of the Vacan Television Centre (Centro Televisivo Vacano,
CTV) on the occasion of the congress held to commemorate
thirty years since its foundaon, an anniversary that coincides
with another important date y years since the approval
of the Conciliar decree Inter Mirifica, which numbers
among the marvellous gifts of God the tools of social
communicaon including, indeed, television.
During these decades, technology has advanced at
great speed, creating unexpected and interconnected
networks, continued Pope Francis. It is necessary to
maintain the evangelical perspecve in this type of global
communicaon highway, he added, in presenng events,
your approach must be not worldly, but ecclesial.
In this regard, the Pontiff recalled how, shortly after
being elected as Bishop of Rome, in his meeng with the
journalists who had covered the Conclave, he stated that
the role of the media has continually grown in recent
mes, to the extent that they have become indispensable
for transmi ng to the world the events of contemporary
history. He connued, All this is also reected in the life
of the Church. But if it is not easy to narrate the events
of history, it is even more complex to report the events
linked to the Church. This requires a special responsibility,
a great capacity for interpreng reality in a spiritual light.
Eecvely, the events in the life of the Church have a special
character: they are governed by a logic that is not primarily
that of, so to say, 'worldly' categories, and precisely for this
reason, it is not easy to interpret and communicate them to
a broad and varied public.
Finally, the Pope reiterates that the Vacan Television
Centre does not fulfil a merely documentary, neutral
function in relation to events, but rather contributes to
bringing the Church closer to the world, bridging distances,
taking the Word of God to millions of Catholics, even to
places where oen professing ones faith is a courageous
choice. Thanks to the images (it transmits), CTV walks
alongside the Pope in bringing Christ to the many forms of
solitude of contemporary man, even reaching sophiscated
technological peripheries. In this, your mission, it is
important to remember that the Church is present in the
world of communicaon, in all its variegated expressions,
first and foremost to lead people to the encounter with
Jesus Christ.
Francis concluded by asking the Virgin to guide the
steps of the pilgrims of communicaon, and invoked the
intercession of St Clare of Assisi, patron of television.

THE
Mission of the Church
Sir, The Editorial in the issue of The Examiner on World Mission
Day 2013 was excellent. The arcle by Bishop Agnelo Gracias
was very informative and enlightening. He rightly stated
Evangelisaon is not the main mission of the Church. It is her
only Mission. The explanaon of the New Evangelisaon is
indeed inspiring.
In this connecon, I would like to share with your readers
our humble aempts being made at St Michaels Church,
Mahim, where about 45,000 to 50,000 devotees of Mary
belonging to all castes and creeds coming from all strata of
society, aend the Wednesday Novenas very faithfully. In the
spirit of Evangelisaon, we are trying to reach out and oer
the following services to them:
1) Proclaiming Christ Navjeevan Kendra, the Catholic
Enquiry Centre a liated to the Naonal O ce of the Catholic
Enquiry Centre in New Delhi, was iniated in 1995 by the
late Fr Salvador Rodrigues. For the last 18 years, the Kendra
has been distribung Evangelical Literature like copies of the
Bible, booklets, tracts etc. free of charge in three languages
English, Hindi and Marathi. The volunteers are always ready
to give more informaon or explanaon about Mother Mary,
and answer any queries about Jesus Christ and His mission.
Navjeevan Kendra is planning to expand its activities by
employing modern means of communicaon and techniques.
For this reason, we want more volunteers especially knowing
Hindi and Marathi, and who are commied to this ministry.
Interested persons may contact on Phone Nos: 2444 9377 /
98339 96350.
2) Counselling Service Thousands of devotees aend with
great devoon the Novena Services every week at St Michaels
Church, Mahim, and listen attentively to the homilies.
Hundreds of them approach us seeking advice to cope with
di cules and problems of life. Many ask for counselling to
sort our their personal or family problems. In 2002, a few
volunteers fullled this need. We intend to strengthen and
expand this counselling service in a more professional way.
Fr Godfrey DSa, the Founder Director of Prafulta Counselling
Centre of Don Bosco at Andheri, has oered his assistance in
this venture. It is hoped that under the guidance of Mother
Mary, the counselling of her devotees will be an aspect of our
missionary endeavour.
3) Message from Mother Mary A wrien message from
Our Lady of Perpetual Succour. We propose to publish a printed
message in the form of a leer from Mother Mary as a handout
to reect upon and pray.
This inspiring message every Wednesday is painstakingly
compiled by Bishop Percival Fernandez, Bishop Emeritus,
a well-known spiritual writer. The stories, anecdotes and
examples are carefully selected with an appropriate moral
for ones personal life. For the sake of convenience and to
facilitate wider circulaon, it will be published as a booklet
every few months. It is our earnest desire and hope that this
new venture of Mother Marys message in the form of a leer
will serve as a source of strength, inspiraon and guidance so
that the devotees of Mother Mary will improve the quality of
their lives along the Evangelical values.

Three more weaknesses
to conquer
Sir, T J Burdicks article, Seven Weaknesses for Todays
Catholics, The Examiner (Oct 12, 2013), rightly comments: I do
not believe I am the only one struggling with these. He probes
seven intra and inter-Chrisan approaches and disposions.
May I also add three more weaknesses or frailes that
humanity is prone to, and must strive to overcome. I will
refer to the Scriptural quotes only, and leave the responses
to the readers.
1) Addicons: Live by the Spirit, and do not grafy the
desires of the flesh works of the flesh are obvious
drunkenness, carousing and things like these. (Galaans
15:16,19,21)
2) Sexual sins: Be sure of this, that no fornicator or
impure person has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ.
(Ephesians 5:5)
3) Gossip: They are not merely idle, but also gossips and
busybodies, saying what they should not say. (1 Timothy 5:13)
Thus, to negate and oset these shortcomings, we must
build up our inner strengths through Christ! St Paul gives us
some remedies: Pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love,
endurance and gentleness. (1 Timothy 6:11)

Dengue. An eecve PowerPoint presentaon was made by

parlance, it is called the ger mosquito. It breeds in clean
stagnant water, and hence all receptacles for stagnant water
must be located and cleaned. The presentaon explains this in
detail. The prevenve aspect is important. Signs and symptoms
of dengue fever were described. The gestaon period of the
virus is about six days. The presentaon goes on about how
paents must be treated at home, or in serious cases, in
hospital. Some paents can take a turn for the worse quickly,
and their condion deteriorates. Hence, close supervision is
necessary. It is important to remember that dengue is caused
by a virus, and hence there is no medicine to kill the virus. Only
symptomac treatment can be given. This is unlike malaria,
where there are specic medicaons to kill the parasite.
I would suggest that the Mumbai Municipality educates the
common man on this deadly disease and how to prevent it in
the rst place. Schools and Catholic parishes can arrange for
talks and invite the general public to aend them. Children
must be encouraged to keep their surroundings free of
stagnant water and get their parents to do their bit. Also
handbills giving informaon on how to ght dengue must be
printed and distributed to parishioners and the general public.
It is a social responsibility for responsible cizens and social
associaons. Only with an all out war on the deadly Aedes
Egyp and prevenve measures can the dreaded disease be
brought under control.

Successful Ageing
Sir, In concluding the editorial, Century of Resplendent
Faith (The Examiner, Nov 9), the writer talks about a project
concerning senior cizens suering from Parkinsons disease,
demena and other age-related diseases. For those of us
whose age is catching up, all we need to do is culvate a healthy
lifestyle. To quote the words of Eubie Blake, the great ragme
composer and pianist, who was sll performing at the age of
99: If Id known I was going to live this long, Id have taken
beer care of myself. Lets face it: old age is what lies ahead.
If youre 50 or even 60, you might not give much thought to
the health challenges of ageing. But just as planning for future
nancial needs is important, so is planning for opmum health.
While some diseases, such as Alzheimers and certain cancers
connue to confound researchers, a great number can be
prevented, forestalled, or minimised with a healthy lifestyle
and regular health screenings. The more you do in middle age
to prepare yourself for successful ageing, the beer.
As adults age, many worry that they are becoming more
forgeul. They think forgeulness is the rst sign of Alzheimers
Disease (AD). In the past, memory loss and confusion were
accepted as just part of growing older. However, sciensts
now know that people can remain both alert and able as they
age, although it may take them longer to remember things.
During the past several years, sciensts have begun to focus
on a type of cognive change called Mild Cognive Impairment
(MCI), which is dierent from age-related cognive change and
oen, over years, may progress to AD. People with amnesia
(having a specic memory di culty) do have ongoing memory
problems, but they do not have other losses typical of AD, such
as confusion, aenon problems, and di culty with language.
The most debilitang factor for elders is stress. Stress
management works on two levels. The first is about
maintaining a harmonious lifestyle, so that stress does not get
out of control. This involves having outlets that allow you to
release the stress. The second strategy involves learning how
to relax yourself or change your mood, if stress is having a
negave impact on your life. There are no great secrets about
prevenng stress from being a serious issue in your life. If you
want to prevent stress, then you have to engage in life.

Sir, Since the 1970s, before every elecon, the BMC and
the State government have been ritually revising the cut-
o dates for illegal slums in the city. Such decisions have
encouraged exodus of migrants into this mega-city, and slums
have proliferated like cancer, encroaching upon forest lands,
destroying mangroves, occupying municipal/government
lands, grabbing airport/railway property. These slums, because
of their vote-bank, are given every possible amenity, e.g.
there is no property tax for them. To demolish them is almost
impossible, because every politician protests to protect/
support them. Any purported demolion is only farcical and
an eye-wash. In contrast, in the case of Campa-Cola Society,
ironically, the State govt and BMC have shown rmness and
stubbornness. This is because the people living in ats, etc.,
do not form a formidable vote-bank, as they hardly cast their
vote. If all these cizens collecvely decide to cast their vote
in the coming elecons, they can literally decide who will form
the government. Today, the slum-dwellers decide who will
rule. Hence, they are treated like gods. People living in ats
get step-motherly treatment.

In many parishes the number of people present at the start of Mass
doubles as the celebration goes on. This may be a hangover of the
rule we followed when Mass was in Latin and only a few understood
the readings. To help people realize the importance of Scripture and
relish the Word proclaimed at Mass our Novena this year at Dabul
highlights rst part of the Eucharist, The Liturgy of the Word with nine
talks on The Bible, the Book for all Seasons.
