fantry Military Leggings
should be made of "troll.q,
dU1'able duck, and mad e
straight at the top. Height
is a question of preference,
but twelve inches is ample
protection. Everything
about leggings should be
a part of them, or fastened
to them in such a manner
as not to come off. Thev
should be so made that one
part will not wear out be·
fore another, and for that
reason the edge must not
be bound either with
leather or cloth, neither
must a raw edge. be ex-
posed. Buckles and straps
should be riveted into the
leggings, not sewed on.
The fastening ought never
to be positil'e, like buttons.
heavy snap springs, patent
g]o\'e bntton clasps, etc.,
N 1 N 2 ill] of whieh admit of no
o .• o .. play. but the legging must
nevertheless fit exactly. The fastening Rhould be of something that will airel' the least possible re-
sistance to brush, ete., and yet be capable of quick adjustment. A1I of the foregoing <ssentials are
comprised in the patent laee Leggings adopted by the U. S. Army in 1887, and listed below as
Standard Army Leggings (No.1). The fastening consist,< of grommet holes, tiat and smooth, in
front fiap, and heavy 'army studs in rear fiap, a combination that offers practicaliy no resistance to
busbes, etc., and also "gives" with the motion of the leg, and thus renders walking easy.

~VHIT~I.c"-N RUBBER-~"OOTED STIRRUPS.

The WhitJuan Stirrup.-In whatever ways stirrups have been improved, excepting the-
wooden stirrup, there is only ODeother stirrup (the 'Whitman) in the market that will prevent the
foot from slipping. The 'Whitman Stirrup is elegant in appearance, is of proper weight, and bv
means of a neat rubber llIat countersunk in its foot-plate prevents the foot from slipping. A pal!'
of these Stirrups may be useel a good while, and then may be made as good as new by replating
au(l substituting new rubber mats for the old ones. No person who has used the Whitman Stirrup·
wiJ] ever be satisfied with any othcr kind.

Directions for Using.-Attach the end·llOoksof the Riding Straps to the shoes, and the
elasps to the inside edges of the trouser legs, as shown in the eut ;\Iakesure that the outside hooks
are well in place, and also that the elasps have a good hold on the trousers, and it is well to give
them an extra pinch. If the Hiding Straps are too long. unscrew one hook on eaeh and eut off
some of the wire srring. To unscrew the hook, hold the end of the wire firm]y with a pair of
small pliers; otherwise, as the tendetH'Yof the wire spring is to bind when you attempt to unscrew
the hoo'" you are liable to twist the whole spring out of shape. If Straps are too short, send them
back and another pair will bc sent in thcir pJace.
