Glimpse of TRICIA Annual Dinner

This seems to be the mantra of an emerging
TRICIA philosophy. A new wave of
enterprising, enthusiastic and exuberant crop
of young men and women holding reins of
Tricity India Association (TRICIA). Launching a
constitutional change last year in composition
of office-bearers with a public mandate the
team conducted a series of successful
programs. An open and fair election process
was repeated this year and a team backed by
a majority backing is in place to steer TRICIA
during 2014.
The new Sheriff in India Town is Baswa
Shaker. A veteran of TRICIA in the
background is now in the forefront giving a
dimension of inclusiveness. At the sell-out
Annual Dinner on November 17th at the Greek
Church in Albany it was great to see young,
old and not so old mingling, juggling, dining,
dancing and immersing themselves in a sea of
happiness. This is an eloquent testimony to
the emerging aspirations and contributions of a
new generation of TRICIANS in town.
All said and done, India is a
"mother-of-festivals" and all of us whether we
bring baggage on arrival in the US or not
.we do carry with us a manual of festivals
in our minds. At the drop of a hat, there can be
a dance from a koliwada or an oddissi
expression or a kuchipudi performance or a
Nazrul blow-out or a heart thumping bhangra
or a mohini attam..just to mention few
creative pursuits. There is Bollywood estate
trapped in every Indian's mind, body and soul.
To believe me, you should have seen
Mr. Priyesh Singh the savvy car-merchant
dressed to kill putting even a Sharukh to
shame..he won the best dressed male
award. And what about that Mr. Samir Ahuja
when he is in his elements can rival moves of
Prabhudeva effortlesslyand he went on to
win an award in a musical quiz. And if you
missed the Annual Dinner you really missed
our own MD.her graceful body
movementsI mean our Madhuri
Dixit..our Manasi Dutta. She bagged the
best dancer award.
While Mrs. Rashi Shaker is glowing as the
next first-lady, Mrs. Kiran Singh is happy to get
her husband the out-going President Guryam
Singh back on her leash.
It is not fair to gloss over the fact that there
have been avoidable and unavoidable scars,
wounds and burns in the community. However
measuring the "happiness-quotient" at the
Annual Dinner it is fair to say that the
community is putting the past behind and
surging forward.
The musical group "Jersey Rhythms" aroused
the audience with haunting tunes, foot tapping
orchestration and a medley of songs from
every nook and corner of the vast country they
hail from. Karavalli proved once again why
they are the talk of the town by serving mouth
watering dishes.
It was very heartening to see representation
from our Pakistani friends.Mr.Afaq
Khan, Mr. Saleem Bhatti and Mr. Imran
Siddiqui. While there may be man-made
borders on land the free minds know no
boundaries.

New Security Enhancement Helps
E-Verify Deter Employee Fraud
WASHINGTON - U.S. Citizenship and
Immigration Services Director Alejandro
Mayorkas announced an enhancement to the
E-Verify program that will help combat identity
fraud by identifying and deterring fraudulent
use of Social Security numbers (SSNs) for
employment eligibility verification.
This enhancement provides a critical
safeguard to the E-Verify system by detecting
and preventing potential fraudulent use of
SSNs to gain work authorization. An employer,
for example, may enter information into
E-Verify that appears valid such as a
matching name, date of birth, and SSN but
was in fact stolen, borrowed or purchased from
another individual. This new safeguard now
enables USCIS to lock a SSN that appears to
have been misused, protecting it from further
potential misuse in E-Verify.
We are committed to strengthening E-Verifys
ability to combat identity fraud, said Director
Mayorkas. This new enhancement provides
yet another significant safeguard for E-Verify
users and could assist employees who have
had their Social Security numbers stolen or
compromised.
E-Verify is a free Web-based service offered
by the Department of Homeland Security.

Indian politics devoid of democratic norms
By: Nilofar Suhrawardy
Unarguably, Mahatma Gandhi remembered as
the "Father of the Nation" took many
democratic steps to reach out to the Indian
masses and identified himself with them. One
of those steps was his decision to don dhoti, a
traditional men's garment worn in India. In
India today several Indian politicians can be
seen wearing dhoti in different styles. The style
of their wearing dhoti identifies them with the
region they hail from. Though their dhoti adds
a regional stamp to their political identity, it is
difficult to link it with today's democratic spirit.
The explanation is simple.
The dhoti can no longer be described as a
common Indian citizen's dress. The majority of
men in cities as well as villages are seen in
shirts and trousers. Even the ladies across the
country now prefer wearing salwar-kameez
and are seen in sarees.
Certainly, Indian politicians have the right to
opt for anything they feel comfortable in. But it
would be erroneous to view this decision as a
part of their democratic appeal to reach out to
the Indian voters. Rather, the style of each
reflects his/her political image he or she is
trying to promote. This stands out in different
ways that the dhoti is worn by P. Chidambarm,
A.K. Antony, Mulayam Singh and other
leaders. Similarly, the different ways in which
sarees are worn by Sonia Gandhi, Jayalalitha
and Mamata Bannerjee cannot be ignored.
The style of their wearing sarees has definitely
added to their political identities. The dressing
styles reflect their own political identity and not
that of common Indian citizens.
The use of a dress as a political tool in today's
India is very much off the democratic path,
which Gandhi used it for. And this is just a
symbolic indicator of the importance accorded
to common Indians in the country's politics.
Despite various leaders claiming to be
people's voice, leader of the common Indians
and other such rhetoric, the divide between
their identity and that of Indians at grassroots
cannot be sidelined. Indeed, it is an irony that
on one hand, the strides in communication
technology has made it possible for Indian
leaders to reach out almost continuously to
Indian citizens. This is what majority of Indian
leaders and parties are engaged in at present.
They are conveying their messages and
making their own voices heard. The same
importance is not accorded to listening to the
voices of India's masses.
Howsoever white, clean and/or starched the
leaders' dress may appear to be, the same
cannot be said about political standards
maintained and promoted by most. The stings
and scams that have caught several politicians
on the wrong foot is just a minor indicator of
their own political record being hardly as white
as their dress.
In reality, there is a major communication gap
between most Indian leaders and people at
grass-roots. The importance given by Gandhi
to bridging this gap has ceased to carry much
relevance for most Indian politicians. There is
a major difference between rhetoric indulged
in by politicians and their practicing the same.
During their electoral campaign, politicians
have started giving considerable importance to
dress of people seen at their political functions.
For instance, the unwritten rule being practiced
by most is that Muslim men must wear their
attire with their skull caps and the women must
put on the long, black cloak called the burqa.
The primary purpose of this drive is to display
the "support" of Muslims for these leaders.
Here, the democratic gap between display of
these Muslims' presence and their being
viewed as representatives of Indian Muslims
cannot be missed.
The last point can be expanded to reflect on
democratic relevance of crowd witnessed at
political functions. Undeniably, displaying large
gatherings at their rallies and other such
programs is an important part of electoral
campaigns. But to what extent can crowds
actually add to democratic credibility of such
leaders.
It may be recalled, sometime back, Anna
Hazare dominated Indian politics and media.
He apparently derived his "democratic"
strength from the presence of huge gatherings
of common Indians at his functions. In certain
areas, Hazare began to be hailed as the
second Gandhi. Now, Hazare does not seem
to enjoy the same political support. His ride
atop the political waves was apparently a
temporary phase.
If Hazare's political strength was really based
on democratic support of common Indians,
most probably his name would also have been
used today to attract crowds. But he is no
longer in the political picture. And this reaffirms
the point made earlier about their being a
major communication gap between Indian
leaders and people at the grassroots. The
political image displayed by most leaders
through their dress, rhetoric, crowd at their
functions and other means does not establish
their democratic credibility among common
Indians.
In today's Indian politics, there is a major gap
between politicians projecting themselves as
people's leader and their actually being
recognized as such by the majority.

than Tendulkar, is widely considered among
the greatest chess players the world has
produced, ranking with the likes of Mikhail Tal,
Tigran Petrosian, Anatoly Karpov, Garry
Kasparov and Bobby Fischer.
Anand's achievement is all the more
remarkable as he comes from a country which,
though it invented the game (during the Gupta
empire in the sixth century), does not have
much of a chess tradition. He has had few
other Indians to seriously compete with to
hone his skills, unlike the Russian
grandmasters.
I frankly know nothing about chess. I did not
even think it was a "sport" until I read about
how those at the top have also to be in peak
physical, as well as mental, condition. Hence,
it is not just a mind-sport. After its invention in
India, chess seems to have come into Persia
after that country was conquered by the
Muslims in the seventh century. The game
was first called "chaturanga", then "shatranj"
("al-shatranj" in Spanish), but in Europe it
became "shah" (king), finally "check" and
Prakash Padukone
"chess". It came to the Iberian peninsula with
the Moors and by the 11th century Muslim
traders had spread it all over Europe through
the seaports. It is one of the world's most
popular games, played by tens of millions at
home, in clubs, by correspondence and in
tournaments, though it has not yet found a
place in the Olympics.
In his play, "Galileo", German playwright
Bertolt Brecht has a character say, "Unhappy
the land which has no heroes". To which
another character responds, "No, unhappy the
land that needs heroes." Sadly, India still
desperately yearns for heroes, be it Tendulkar
or Anand, showing its immaturity.

The greats of India...
By: Rahul Singh
I know I must be in a very tiny minority when I
say that Sachin Tendulkar does not deserve
the highest civilian honor that the Indian
government has just now bestowed on him:
The coveted Bharat Ratna (meaning "Jewel of
India"). He was given that grand, almost
celestial, award just after he had played his
200th and last cricket "Test" match.
He is not only the youngest Indian to receive
this award, as well as the first sportsperson,
but stands in the august company of some
prime ministers, presidents and, of course, the
incomparable singer, Lata Mangeshkar. In
fact, the criteria for the awards had to be
specially tweaked to accommodate Tendulkar
(sportspersons were not earlier included as
they had their own set of awards). Many have
argued that India's greatest hockey player, the
late Dhyan Chand, winner of several Olympic
gold medals, was more deserving of the
Bharat Ratna than Tendulkar.
Be that as it may, there is little doubt that
Sachin was the much more popular choice. He
is an icon, like filmstar Amitabh Bachchan. The
Indian media, both print and electronic, went
totally overboard on him. Perhaps even over
the top. Yes, he is a great batsman, probably
the best since Donald Bradman (though Brian
Lara fans may dispute this), who has dazzled
and delighted millions in India and outside with
his sublime artistry. Yes, he is also a
marvelous human being, gentle, humble,
modest, loving, and a role model for the
young. He is worshipped like a demi-god.
But I have another take on the award. Cricket
is played seriously in just about eight
countries, all from the Commonwealth. In the
rest of the world, only those who follow cricket
will have heard of him. I can think of two other
sports where India has produced a world
number one - and both those sports are played
by many more countries, worldwide:
Badminton and billiards. Prakash Padukone
(father of actress Deepika) won the badminton
All-England title, widely considered the
championship of the world. And both Wilson
Jones and Michael Ferreira were world
billiards champions. Nobody has seriously
mentioned any of them as serious Bharat
Ratna contenders. I wonder why.
However, leaving them aside, to my mind the
greatest sportsperson India has produced to
date is presently sitting in his hometown of
Chennai, desperately trying to retain his world
title, which he has held for the last five years.
He is, needless to say, Viswanathan Anand.
The 42-year-old Anand, just two years older

on solid assessments. He believes that he is
able to win this fight.
You could say that he is an adherent of the
Walt-Mearsheimer doctrine.
His present moves are based on the
assessment that in a straight confrontation
between Congress and the White House,
Congress will win. Obama, already blooded by
other issues, will be beaten, even destroyed.
True, Netanyahu was proved wrong the last
time he tried something like this. During the
last presidential elections, he openly supported
Mitt Romney. The idea was that the
Republicans were bound to win. The Jewish
casino baron, Sheldon Adelson, poured money
into their campaign, while at the same time
maintaining an Israeli mass-circulation daily for
the sole purpose of supporting Netanyahu.
Romney "couldn't lose" - but he did. This
should have been a lesson for Netanyahu, but
he didn't absorb it. He is now playing the same
game, but for vastly higher stakes.
We are now in the middle of the fight, and it is
still too early to predict the outcome. The
Jewish pro-Israel lobby, AIPAC, supported by
other Jewish and Evangelical organizations, is
marshalling its forces on Capitol Hill. It's an
impressive show.
Senator after senator, congressman after
congressman comes forward to support the
Israeli government against their own president.
The same people who jumped up and down
like string puppets when Netanyahu made his
last speech before both houses of Congress,
try to outdo each other in assertions of their
undying loyalty to Israel.
This is now done in the open, in an exhibition
of shamelessness. Several senators and
congressmen declare publicly that they have
been briefed by the Israeli intelligence
services, and they trust them more than the
intelligence agencies of the US. Not one of
them said the opposite. This would have been
unthinkable if any other country was involved,
say Ireland or Italy, from which many
Americans are descended. The "Jewish State"
stands unique, a kind of inverse anti-Semitism.
Indeed, some Israeli commentators have
joked that Netanyahu believes in the Protocols
of the Elders of Zion, the famous - and
infamous - tract fabricated by the secret police
of the Czar. It purported to expose a sinister
conspiracy of the Jews to rule the world. A
hundred years later, controlling the US comes
near to that.
The senators and representatives are no fools
(not all of them, in any case). They have a
clear purpose: To be re-elected. They know on
which side their bread is buttered. AIPAC has
demonstrated, in several test cases, that it can
unseat any senator or congressman who does
not toe the straight Israeli line. One sentence
of implied criticism of Israeli policies suffices to
doom a candidate.
Politicians prefer open shame and ridicule to
political suicide. No kamikaze pilots in
Congress.
This is not a new situation. It is at least several
decades old. What is new is that it is now out
in the open, without embellishment.
It is difficult to know, as of now, how much the
White House is cowed by this development.
Obama and his Secretary of State John Kerry
know that the US public opinion is dead set
against any new war in the Middle East.
Compromise with Iran is in the air. This is
supported by almost all the world's powers.
Even the French tantrums, which have no
clear purpose but to throw their supposed
weight around, are not serious.
President Francois Hollande was received in
Israel this week like the harbinger of the
Messiah. If one closed one's eyes, one could
imagine that the happy old pre-de Gaulle days
were back again, when France armed Israel,
supplied it with its military atomic reactor and
the two countries went on escapades together
(the ill-fated 1956 Suez adventure.)
But if Obama and Kerry hold fast and stay their
course on Iran, can Congress impose the
opposite course? Could this turn into the most
serious constitutional crisis in US history?
As a sideshow, Kerry is going on with his effort
to impose on Netanyahu a peace he does not
want. Kerry did succeed in pushing Netanyahu
into "final status negotiations" (nobody dared
to utter the word peace, God forbid), but
nobody in Israel or Palestine believes that
anything will come out of this. Unless, of
course, the White House puts the whole might
of the US behind the effort - and that seems
more than unlikely.
Kerry has allotted nine months to the
endeavor, as if it were a normal pregnancy.
But the chances of a baby emerging at the end
of it are practically zero. During the first three
months, the sides have not progressed a
single step. So who will win? Obama or
Netanyahu? Chomsky or Walt/Mearsheimer?
As commentators love to say: Time will tell. In
the meantime, place your bets.

Clash of the Titans
By: Uri Avneery
This is not merely a fight between Israel and
the US. Nor is it only a fight between the White
House and Congress. It is also a battle
between intellectual titans.
On the one side there are the two renowned
professors, Stephen Walt and John
Mearsheimer. On the other, the towering
international intellectual, Noam Chomsky.
It's all about whether the dog wags the tail or
the tail wags the dog.
Six years ago the two professors shocked the
US (and Israel) when they published a book,
"The Israel lobby and US Foreign Policy," in
which they asserted that the foreign policy of
the United States, at least in the Middle East,
is practically controlled by the State of Israel.
To paraphrase their analysis, Washington,
D.C. is in effect an Israeli colony. Both the
Senate and the House of Representatives are
Israeli occupied territories, much like Ramallah
and Nablus.
This is diametrically opposed to the assertion
of Noam Chomsky that Israel is a US pawn,
used by American imperialism as an
instrument to promote its interests.
(I commented at the time that both sides were
right, and that this is a unique dog-tail
relationship. I even quoted the old Jewish joke
about the rabbi who tells a plaintiff that he is
right, and then says the same to the
defendant. "But they can't both be right!"
remonstrates his wife. "You are right, too!" he
answers.)
Intellectual theories can seldom be put to a
laboratory test. But this one can. It is
happening now. Between Israel and the US a
crisis has developed, and it has come into the
open. It's about the putative Iranian nuclear
bomb. President Barack Obama is determined
to avert a military showdown. Prime Minister
Binyamin Netanyahu is determined to prevent
a compromise.
For Netanyahu, the Iranian nuclear effort has
become a defining issue, even an obsession.
He talks about it incessantly. He has declared
that it is an "existential" threat to Israel, that it
poses the possibility of a second Holocaust.
Last year he made an exhibition of himself at
the UN General Assembly meeting with his
childish drawing of the bomb.
Cynics say that this is only a trick, a successful
gimmick to divert the world's attention away
from the Palestinian issue. And indeed, for
years now the Israeli policy of occupation and
settlements has been advancing quietly, away
from the limelight.
But in politics, one gimmick can serve several
purposes at once. Netanyahu is serious about
the Iranian bomb. The proof: On this issue he
is ready to do something that no Israeli prime
minister has ever dared to do before:
Endanger Israeli-US relations.
This is a momentous decision. Israel is
dependent on the US in almost every respect.
The US pays Israel a yearly tribute of at least
$3 billion, and in fact much more. It gives us
modern military equipment. Its veto protects us
from UN Security Council censure, whatever
we do.
We have no other unconditional friend in the
world, except, perhaps, the Fiji Islands.
If there is one thing on which practically all
Israelis agree, it is this subject. A break with
the US is unthinkable. The US-Israeli
relationship is, to use a Hebrew expression
much loved by Netanyahu, "the rock of our
existence." So what does he think he is doing?
Netanyahu was brought up in the US. There
he attended high school and university. There
he started his career. He does not need
advisers on US affairs. He considers himself
the smartest expert of all. He is no fool.
Neither is he an adventurer. He bases himself

Pakistan's economic risk
By: Dr Maleeha Lodhi
Having entered its sixth month in office, Prime
Minister Nawaz Sharif's government has to
deal decisively with a number of urgent
economic challenges even as it has taken the
necessary first steps to stabilise the economy.
The most immediate vulnerability lies in the
country's external position. Foreign exchange
reserves have plunged to a critical low in the
past two months. This has resulted from a
sharp rise in the current account deficit, with
the import bill surging, capital flows at a virtual
standstill and continuing external debt
repayments, including to the International
Monetary Fund (IMF).
Reserves have also depleted at an
accelerated rate because the central bank has
been intervening in the interbank market to
shore up the value of the rupee. Running
down foreign currency reserves to buy rupees
contributed to reserves dwindling to an
alarming level in early October - to just under $
4 billion, and not enough to cover even a
month's imports. By the end of October
however, reserves (held by the State Bank)
had recovered to $ 4.2 billion.
This still puts reserves in the range that
precipitated the 2008 balance of payments
crisis. The important difference is that there is
now an IMF programme in place. But more
repayments loom to the IMF (on the earlier
loan) and other creditors. In November around
$744 million is due to the IMF as well as an
unspecified amount owed to others.
An IMF mission was recently in Islamabad to
conduct a quarterly review of progress as
required under the Extended Fund Facility
(EFF) arrangement agreed in August for a

fresh three-year $ 6.6 billion loan. With this
review now concluded, the IMF's executive
board is expected in mid-December to approve
the next tranche of the loan - around $540
million.
Herein lies the challenge for the country's
economic managers. With more outflows than
inflows expected in the next few months,
managing the reserve position acquires critical
importance, especially to avert any precipitous
erosion of market confidence. Some analysts
have critiqued the IMF programme design for
not anticipating that it would take time for
reserves to build and that a period when
outflows could exceeded inflows (given the
staggered nature of EFF disbursements and
time lag for financial resources to flow from
other multilateral agencies) could leave
Pakistan in a precarious position.
That is true. The IMF may also have
underestimated the balance of payments gap.
This is why the government has asked the
Fund for additional upfront money to help it
tide over this fragile situation. But this still
leaves the government with the daunting task
of managing a tight reserve position in the next
six months to meet liabilities and prevent panic
in the market. This is especially so as funding
committed by other multilateral institutions and
bilateral partners, conditioned on the IMF deal,
is not likely to kick in for another few months.
The government therefore has to deftly
negotiate this period and signal that it is
proceeding according to a plan to address the
balance of payments problem and build
reserves.
In meeting this challenge the government
faces an inevitable trade off, which the central
bank has already been struggling with -
between preserving reserves and defending
the currency. Initially the State Bank of
Pakistan fulfilled the "prior action" committed
to the IMF by starting net purchases of foreign
exchange. Thereafter it reversed course
especially after the panic that gripped the
currency market on 26 September.
On that day the exchange rate witnessed
unprecedented volatility as market sentiment
fluctuated wildly. This led the central bank to
undertake almost daily interventions to shore
up the rupee. The danger of panicked and
disorderly interventions is that they can
eventually drive the reserve level so low as to
produce the very outcome they aim to prevent:
A currency collapse when reserves run out.
This danger has to be mitigated by steady and
proactive action to maintain the reserve level

Controversy brews over Musharraf's trial
By: Salahuddin Haider
It would be difficult to predict the outcome of
the treason trial instituted against Pakistan's
former strongman Gen. Pervez Musharraf as it
is still shrouded in mystery. However, the trial
has stirred a heated debate in the country over
the impact of this trial.
Many say that the trial can open a Pandora's
box or will reflect poorly on the government of
Nawaz Sharif. The masses are keen to know
as to why the country's highest judicial forum,
the Supreme Court, instead of nominating a
three-member bench of judges for holding the
trial, has thrown the ball back in the
government's court.
Under the decades-old practice, the executive
requests the apex court to nominate judges for
a probe into sensitive issues. The government
had adopted the same course of action by
forwarding five names - decided by the
provincial high courts - to the Chief Justice of
Pakistan, Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, who
was supposed to shortlist three from the list.
However, in a surprise move - for which no
explanation has so far been offered - the chief
justice sent the file back to the government
allowing it to choose judges itself.
Subsequently, the Ministry of Law and Justice
selected Justice Faisal Arab, Justice Tahira
Safdr, and Justice Yawar Ali from Sindh,
Balochistan and the Punjab high courts
respectively.
The selection showed that smaller provinces
of the KPK and one in the tribal belt, was
considered unworthy for the job.
One controversy was already brewing over the
selection of the judicial bench; another issue
came to the fore. Prominent lawyer and former
attorney-general Anwar Mansoor pointed out
out that Musharraf was not being tried for
overthrowing an elected government in 1999.
According to Mansoor, Musharraf is being tried
for dismissing the superior court judges in
2007.
It seems that Chief Justice Chaudhry, who had
legitimized Musharraf's coup in 1999, wanted
to stay away from the case so as to avoid
problems in future.
PPP's Syed Khurshid Shah, Opposition leader
in the National Assembly, has demanded that
the trial's scope should be extended to the
original coup against Nawaz Sharif's previous
government, as the removal of judges from
service on Nov. 3, 2007, was just a small
chapter of a massive thriller, written in 1999.
He avoided answering questions as to why did
his own PPP-led government did not take any
action during its recently concluded five-year
term.
There are rumors doing the rounds that Army
chief Gen. Ashfaq Parvez Kayani and his
officers are opposed to trying their former
chief. It is said that the army had been trying to
protect Musharraf and did not allow the
Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) to probe
him.
On Wednesday, Kayani reportedly presided
over a key commanders' conference in
Rawalpindi, which has fueled fears that the
army may be making a move to stop the
government from taking any action against
Musharraf.
Another prominent lawyer, Babar Sattar,
expressed his fears that perhaps Sharif is set
to take revenge for what Musharraf did to him.
A former army general and analyst, Talat
Masood, says the whole issue will open up "a
can of worms."
The common man and leading journalists are
of the opinion that the case is bound to entail
risks for key persons in the army and the
judiciary, which in turn will expose the country
to a new kind of turmoil.
Analysts argue that the trial is ill timed as
Sharif's government is already faced with
economic issues and terrorism. They recalled
that Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar had
announced the trial when Sharif was touring
Sri Lanka and Thailand. They believe that the
sudden announcement was aimed at diverting
attention from the gruesome incident that had
taken place in Rawalpindi on the 10th day of
Muharram.
If Musharraf submits a list of defense
witnesses, which may include top army
generals and calls even the former judges,
justifying his coup in 1999 through a court
judgment, then the matter will take a new turn.
The court is ready to charge him on the basis
of evidence reportedly collected by the federal
investigators, but whether these evidence will
hold grounds during debate by rival lawyers in
the three-judge court, remains to be seen.
Agreement, however, is that the court may
entangle itself on issues which will be difficult
to resolve. The trial, therefore, may backfire,
which would be a major source of
embarrassment for Sharif.

First Born Muslim woman to lead Friday prayers in UK
Muslim born Canadian, Raheel Raza after leading mix gender prayer in Toronto, making Dua.
Oxford, England Europe is trying to promote
another Fitna in Islam. Dr. Taj Hargey, an
Imam of the Oxford Islamic Congregation, is
running a Muslim Education Center in Oxford.
Hargey preaches an ultra-liberal interpretation
of Islam which includes, among other things,
that men and women should be allowed to
pray together and that female Imams should
lead mixed congregations in prayer.
A few years back, a similar attempt was failed
in Brooklyn, New York , when an ultramodren
woman had attempted to lead a female group
in Friday prayer. The Muslim community of
Brooklyn strongly condemned this act and did
not allow for it to continue.
Now a Muslim born woman, Rheel Raza 60, is
trying to follow in the same footsteps. She is
known as an author, preacher of modern
Islam, and advocate of women rights and
equality. Raza is also leading a small group of
individuals in Toronto Canada.
Dr. Taj Hargey invited Raza to Oxford and
offered her to deliver a khutbah and lead
Friday prayer in his Oxford Masjid. Raza said,
"It was a very profound experience. Its not
about taking the job of an Imam. It's about
reminding the Muslim community that 50% of
its adherents are women who are equal to
men. Women are equally observant, practicing
Muslims who deserve to be heard."
Ms. Raza's appearance in Oxford is a repeat of
a similar mixed-gender congregation prayer
session in 2005 which was led by Amina
Wadud, an American-born convert and Muslim
feminist. This is the first time a Muslim-born
woman led a mixed prayer service in Britain.
"For Friday prayers we now receive about 100
people, twice that for Eid prayers," Dr. Hagery
said. . He is optimistic to get 200 name by the
Friday.

Roshni alerts authorities, State takes action
ALBANY, N.Y. Roshni draws attention of
higher state official towards ongoing scam in
the community, and receives honor from New
York State officials.
Community leader, Dr. Liaquat Hussain,
initiated a discussion on the topic of ID theft by
arranging a seminar in the ICCD, NY. The
president of Police Chiefs of New York State
and Colonie Police Chief Mr. Steven Heider
delivered an informative speech on the matter.
At this time, local community members made
a complaint about the scam.
Roshni took this matter seriously, and placed
the news on their website, RoshniOnline.com
as well as sent emails to high authorities to
take action on this serious matter. We
received news that a well-respected
community member got a call from an
individual threatening them that their son is
PLEASANT VALLEY, N.Y. -- A Pakistani
pharmacist killed his beloved wife and then
used a shotgun to kill his two sons and himself
in what state police called a "senseless
tragedy", which they still can't explain.
Abbas Lodhi 49, first shot Sarwat Lodhi, 43,
then killed 13-year-old Mujtabah and
9-year-old Zain. His body and those of his
children were found Thursday morning in their
hometown, Pleasant Valley.
Sarwat Lodhi's body was found Friday
afternoon by a homeowner along a road 13
miles away in Wappingers Falls. Abbas Lodhi
was planning to buy this house from the
homeowner who found his wife's dead body
near the house, sources told Roshni.
under risk of being arrested, unless he pays
$1450 because he did not file proper forms or
information when he came from Pakistan.
Roshni contacted the local police chief and
Albany County Chief Executive office,
explaining the situation and requested them to
pay personal attention on this matter. The
County Executive office then contacted the
police chief, sheriff department and state
offices alerting them of this matter. After these
efforts NY Governor Andrew Cuomo issued an
official warning, alerting people about
telephone and email scammers pretending to
be tax collectors. Cuomo states in his press
note, the scammers claim they are from the
Internal Revenue Service or the state tax
department and threaten people with fines,
deportation or arrest if they fail to pay up.

Lodhi moved from Pakistan during the 90s
with his wife and became U.S. citizens. He
was a state-licensed pharmacist since 1993
and recently sold his pharmacy to CVS in
Hyde Park.
At about 8:30 a.m. Thursday, a worker in a
supermarket plaza found the bodies of Abbas
Lodhi and fourth-grader Zain in an SUV along
with the shotgun. Mujtabah, an eighth-grader,
was found at the family's nearby home.
"I am really in shock," said Mrs. Shahnaz
Qureshi of Latham, NY. She told Roshni that
her kids and Lodhis kids were friends so
Abbas and Sarwat Lodhi along with their kids
frequented their house. "They loved each
other a lot, I still cant believed this happened",
Qureshi says.
