Conditions for acceptance of waste in the Untertagedeponie Heilbronn

Before the first acceptance of a waste, a qualification test has to be accomplished to prove that the waste, which shall be stored, fulfils the criteria of acceptance.

Waste, which shall be stored, must exhibit the following characteristics - criteria of acceptance: 1. The waste must exhibit sufficient stability (consolidation and/or shearing resistance) to avoid uncontrolled deformation (e.g. mechanical compaction) during transport and after deposition. Liquid or gaseous waste is excluded from deposition. The waste must not contain or give rise to germs of transferable diseases. The wastes shall not be explosive, (self) inflammable or combustible under conditions of subsurface storage - i.e. temperature of approx. 18 C and relative humidity of approx. 50 - 60 %. The waste may not be degassing - i.e. shall not produce either toxic or explosive gas / air mixtures. No strong smell may proceed from the waste. The waste may usually not contain free dust - a homogeneous moistening of the waste must be ensured (for some few types of refuse exceptions are defined). The waste may not contain excess water and /or deliver grout able liquids after deposition. Radioactive waste is generally excluded from acceptance. The temperature of the waste (and of the bundle) may not exceed 40 C when delivered.

The waste is deposited either in flexible plastic containers (big bags) or metal containers or sheetsteel barrels. All these containers must be certified before use and fulfil the following criteria: 1. The packaging must be double-walled or supplied with inliner. Both outside and internal container/inliner must be made of chemically and temperature-steady material in relation to the waste enclosing. The packaging must exhibit sufficient mechanical stability. Metal containers are to be protected from corrosion by appropriate means of coating or painting. The piling-up stability of any container - 5times the nominal load - must be proven. Big bags must exhibit a minimum load-carrying capacity SF 2:1 (alternative load) and SF 5:1 (breaking load). The interior containers / inliners must be dust proof and/or waterproof - case of wastes which may not come into contact with water - inliners must be wrapped with cable strap.

The catches of metal containers must be secured against unintentional opening. In order to facilitate a check of content and sampling catches may neither stuck together nor be welded. The size of containers (without pallet) is limited to 1.2 m in diameter and a height of 1.6 m. The maximum filling-weight, depending of the type of big bag, is between 1 and 2 tons at maximum. Single-point of suspension must be possible. Delivery of big bags should be on pallets 1.2 x 1.2 m in size - quadripartite receptible due to handling by forklift truck. The nominal diameter of the carrying rope - fibre ropes according to DIN 83 322/83 334 - must be > 20 mm due to industrial safety. Its minimum length must be at least 3.10 m because the angle of inclination of a hooked up big bag must not exceed 45 during handling. Perfect cleanness of packaging and pallets is provided due to industrial hygiene. The utilized packaging - big bags, containers or barrels - must correspond to the above requirements stated in the official notice of assessment by the National Office for Geology, Natural Resources and Mining. Packaging must be further certified by the office - we gladly deliver a list of packaging already certified for the Untertagedeponie Heilbronn on request.

Additional information 1. Pallets, which are customers' property and return is desired, should be clearly identified by shorthand contraction. Big bags and containers must not be deposited together with combustible pallets. The latter are returned to the customer in any case unless barrels are used for packaging. Delivery of waste may be by truck or railway car - mind a suitable transportation safety device. Particularly containers must be equipped with an inseparable transportation safety device. In case of barrels or containers are used for packaging, the head space volume must be minimized in order to avoid uncontrolled deformation and destabilization of the stack after deposition. Additional fill of inert material may be necessary. Barrels, standing in upright position, must be lashed together in four per pallet. Date of racking, origin (shorthand identification), weight, and serial number for each calendar year must be noted on the packaging. Each delivery must be accompanied by a filled waste release form - mind to identify origin of waste/producer, weight, and number of bundles. Delivery and dispatch in the Untertagedeponie Heilbronn is from Monday to Thursday between 7.00 a.m. and 2.00 p.m. Customers - waste producer and carrier - will inform about any changes of the waste composition relevant in respect of the above criteria of acceptance immediately.
