We are delighted to welcome you tonight to the heart of downtown Portland for the 29th Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony, held every year the day after Thanksgiving. Each year our Portland community gathers with friends and family in Portlands Living Room for this official kick-off of the holiday season. We are thankful to the thousands of partners, donors and citizens who make this evening possible and whose support of the Square make it one of Portlands most successful and celebrated community assets. Tonights performance and sing-a-long features members of Oregons Own 234th Army Band of the Oregon National Guard under the direction of Chief Warrant Officer Ashley Alexander, members of Pacific Youth Choir under the direction of Mia Savage Miller, the Northwest Community Gospel Choir under the direction of Gary Hemenway, the PHAME Academy Choir under the direction of Matthew Gailey and members of Pink Martini. As we sing together, we hope to unite the Portland community in an evening of celebration, music and winter cheer. We invite you this evening to lift your voices and sing-a-long to the nearly 25 seasonal and joyful songs included in this songbook tonight and throughout the holiday season. With warm wishes this holiday season from Portlands Living Room to yours, Stephen V. Schneider Board President Thomas M. Lauderdale Trustee & Tree Lighting Ceremony Curator

Angels we have heard on high Sweetly singing over the plains And the mountains in reply, Echoing their joyous strains. Glo-ori-a In excelsis de-o Shepherds, why this Jubilee? Why your joyous strains prolong? What the gladsome tidings be Which inspire your heavenly song? Glo-ori-a In excelsis de-o Come to Bethlehem and see Him whose birth the angels sing; Come, adore on bended knee Christ, the Lord, The newborn King Glo-ori-a In excelsis de-o See Him in a manger laid Jesus, Lord of heaven and earth! Mary, Joseph, lend your aid, With us sing our Saviors birth. Glo-ori-a In excelsis de-o
AWAY IN A MANGER
Away in a manger, No crib for His bed, The little Lord Jesus Laid down His sweet head; The stars in the heavens Looked down where He lay, The little Lord Jesus Asleep on the hay. The cattle are lowing, The poor Baby wakes, But little Lord Jesus, No crying He makes. I love Thee, Lord Jesus; Look down from the sky And stay by my cradle Till morning is nigh. Be near me, Lord Jesus; I ask Thee to stay Close by me forever And love me I pray! Bless all the dear children In Thy tender care, And t us for Heaven To live with Thee there. Away in a manger, No crib for His bed, The little Lord Jesus Laid down His sweet head; The stars in the heavens Looked down where He lay, The little Lord Jesus Asleep on the hay

Frosty the snowman was a jolly happy soul, With a corncob pipe and a button nose And two eyes made out of coal. Frosty the snowman is a fairy tale, they say, He was made of snow but the children Know how he came to life one day. There must have been some magic in that Old silk hat they found. For when they placed it on his head He began to dance around Oh Frosty the snowman was alive as he could be, And the children say he could laugh and play just the same as you and me. Thumpetty thump thump thumpety thump thump, Look at Frosty go. Thumpetty thump thump thumpety thump thump, Over the hills of snow. Frosty the snowman knew the sun was hot that day, So he said, Lets run and well have some fun Now before I melt away. Down to the village with a broomstick in his hand, Running here and there all around the square, saying Catch me if you can. He led them down the streets of town Right to the trac cop. And he only paused a moment when He heard him holler Stop! For Frosty the snow man had to hurry on his way, But he waved goodbye saying Dont you cry, Ill be back again some day. (chorus)

Joyful, all ye nations rise; Join the triumph of the skies; With angelic host proclaim Christ is born in Bethlehem! Hark! the herald angels sing Glory to the newborn King! Veiled in esh, the Godhead see; Hail the incarnate Deity Pleased as man with men to dwell, Jesus, our Emmanuel Hark! the herald angels sing, Glory to the newborn King Hail! the heaven-born Prince of Peace! Hail! the Son of Righteousness! Light and life to all He brings, Risen with healing in His wings. Mild He lays His glory by, Born that man no more may die; Born to raise the sons of earth, Born to give them second birth Hark! the herald angels sing, Glory to the newborn King

Christmas future is faraway Christmas past is past Christmas present is here today Bringing joy that will last Have yourself a merry little Christmas Let your heart be light From now on Our troubles will be out of sight Have yourself a merry little Christmas, Make the Yule-tide gay From now on Our troubles will be miles away. Here we are as in olden days Happy golden days of yore. Faithful friends who are dear to us Gather near to us once more. Through the years we all will be together If the Fates allow Hang a shining star upon the highest bough. And have yourself a merry little Christmas now.

It came upon the midnight clear, That glorious song of old, From angels bending near the earth With news of joy foretold, Peace on the earth, good will to men From heavens all gracious King. The world in solemn stillness lay, To hear the angels sing. Still through the cloven skies they come, Loves banner all unfurled; And still their heavenly music oats Over all the weary world. Above its sad and lowly plains Old echoes plaintive ring, And ever over its Babel sounds The blessed angels sing. Yet with the woes of sin and strife The world has suered long; Beneath the Angel-strain have rolled Two thousand years of wrong; And man at war with man hears not The love-song which they bring; O! hush the noise, ye men of strife, And hear the Angels sing. O ye, beneath lifes crushing load Whose forms are bending low, Who toil along the climbing way With painful steps and slow; Look now! for glad and golden hours Come swiftly on the wing; O rest beside the weary road And hear the angels sing. For lo! the days are hastening on, By prophets seen of old, When with the ever-circling years Shall come the time foretold, When the new heaven and earth shall own The Prince of Peace their King, And the whole world send back the song Which now the angels sing

Jingle bells, jingle bells Jingle all the way, Oh what fun it is to ride In a one-horse open sleigh, o Jingle bells, jingle bells Jingle all the way, Oh what fun it is to ride In a one-horse open sleigh. Dashing through the snow In a one-horse open sleigh Oer the elds we go Laughing all the way. Bells on bob-tail ring Making spirits bright What fun it is to ride and sing A sleighing song tonight. Chorus A day or two ago I thought Id take a ride And soon Miss Fanny Bright Was seated by my side; The horse was lean and lank Misfortune seemed his lot, We got into a drifted bank And then, we got upsot. Chorus A day or two ago The story I must tell I went out on the snow And on my back I fell; A gent was riding by In a one-horse open sleigh He laughed at me as I there sprawling laid And quickly drove away. Chorus Now the ground is white, Go it while youre young, Take the girls tonight And sing this sleighing song. Just get a bob-tailed bay, Two-forty as his speed, Hitch him to an open sleigh And crack! youll take the lead. 46

Words are the French poem Minuit chrtiens by Placide Cappeau music by Adolphe Adam (1847) English lyrics translated by John Sullivan Dwight (1855)
O holy night, The stars are brightly shining; It is the night of Our dear Saviors birth! Long lay the world In sin and error pining, Till He appeared And the soul felt its worth. A thrill of hope, The weary world rejoices, For yonder breaks A new and glorious morn. Fall on your knees, O hear the angel voices! O night divine, O night when Christ was born! O night divine, O night, O night divine! Led by the light of Faith Serenely beaming, With glowing hearts By His cradle we stand. So led by light of a star Sweetly gleaming, Here came the wise men From Orient land. The King of Kings lay thus In lowly manger, In all our trials Born to be our Friend! He knows our need, To our weakness no stranger; Behold your King! Before the lowly bend! Behold your King! your King! Before Him bend. Truly He taught us To love one another; His law is love and His gospel is peace. Chains shall He break For the slave is our brother And in His name All oppression shall cease. Sweet hymns of joy in Grateful chorus raise we, Let all within us Praise His holy name! Christ is the Lord, Oh praise His name forever, His powr and glory evermore proclaim His powr and glory Evermore proclaim.

Silent night, holy night! All is calm, All is bright Round yon Virgin, Mother and Child Holy Infant so Tender and mild, Sleep in heavenly peace, Sleep in heavenly peace. Silent night, holy night! Shepherds quake at the sight! Glories stream from heaven afar; Heavenly hosts sing Al-le-lu-ia! Christ the Saviour is born! Christ the Saviour is born! Silent night, holy night! Wondrous star, lend thy light! With the angels let us sing Alleluia to our King! Christ the Saviour is here, Jesus the Saviour is here! Silent night, Holy night! Son of God, loves pure light Radiant beams from Thy holy face, With the dawn of redeeming grace, Jesus Lord at thy birth; Jesus Lord at thy birth. Stille Nacht! Heilige Nacht! WHITE CHRISTMAS
The sun is shining The grass is green The orange and palm trees sway. Ive never seen such a day In Beverly Hills LA. But its December the 24th And I am longing to be up North. Im dreaming of a white Christmas Just like the ones I used to know. Where the treetops glisten, And children listen To hear sleigh bells in the snow. Im dreaming of a white Christmas With every Christmas card I write. May your days be merry and bright. And may all your Christmases be white.
