BROAD OUTCOME Students will handle money, identify corresponding dollar amounts
and calculate the total expenditure. They will also identify correct
coins to use as payment.

SPECIFIC LEARNING Students will be able to demonstrate their addition and money skills, by

PREPARATION / ORGANISATION
Photocopy worksheet for each student
Create ice-cream pricelist (either 1 copy to project onto whiteboard or one copy between two)
Print out coin cut-out sheet

Listening skills 1/. Seat students on the carpet

2/. Discuss that today we will be undertaking a


money challenge.

3/. Put the worksheet on the smartboard (or Smartboard


OHP).

4/. The aim of today’s lesson if for the students


to work out the cost of each item in the
customers order, add the costs up, then show
which coins could be used to buy this ice cream
combination.

Go through question 1.

Transferring of prices d). Now show the students how to look up the Price list
cost of each of these items on the price list, then
Matching of decimal fill in the costs. Stress the importance of lining
points up the decimal points.

Money handling, f). The final step is to decide what coins to use to
addition purchase this ice cream. Cut them out and stick
them onto the worksheet.

6/. As a class go through question 2. This time


ask the students what do I do next? How much
does that cost? Etc. So they are answering the
question for you.

7/. Send students back to their desks to complete


the rest of the questions. However keep the Pencils
struggling maths group on the carpet with you to
work through the questions together. Scissors

8/. At the end of the lesson ask the students to Glue


place their names on the top of the worksheet
and place them on the teachers desk.

Cleaning 9/. Students must pick up all rubbish and place it


in the bin. Leftover paper coins must also be
placed on the desk for the next lesson.
