QS.Could you give me detailed information on the admission process to diploma courses
in polytechnics in Jammu and Kashmir?

ANS.The Board of Professional Entrance Examination conducts an entrance test for


admission to the fulltime Engineering and Non Engineering Programmes in Government
and Private Polytechnics of Jammu and Kashmir Division. Candidates applying for
admission to Diploma Courses in Polytechnics in Jammu and Kashmir must fulfill the
following eligibility conditions:
Must be a state subjects, having passed secondary school examination (Matric or
equivalent examination) from a recognized statutory Board University with science and
math as their subject in class 10th , with not less than 40% in case of general category
candidates and 37% marks in case of reserved categories candidates;
In case of non-State Subjects, candidates must have passed 10th class examination with
40% of marks alongwith Science and Math subjects. Admission of candidates from other
states shall be made only against seats which remain vacant after admitting all the State
subject candidates. There is no age bar for admission.
All Polytechnic Diploma Courses are of three years duration except Fashion Designing
and Quantity Surveying (Draftsman), which is of two years duration.
In the Government Polytechnics all the sanctioned seats are filled by the Board. In private
Polytechnics 85% of seats are filled up by the Board and remaining 15% of seats are
filled by Managements of private institutions.
In Govt. Polytechnic Jammu 15 seats are reserved for female candidates in Travel and
Tourism Branch. In Kashmir Govt. Polytechnic, Srinagar, 15 seats are reserved for female
candidates in Diploma Course in Computer Engineering.
The Fee Structure for Government polytechnics is Rs 2230/-per annum and for Private
Polytechnics is approximately Rs 11,500/-.

/June in leading newspapers of J& K State.

For which admission is based on an entrance examination conducted by the board of


professional entrance examination of J& K State. The syllabus of the entrance test is
based on class X syllabus of J& K board of school education .It is an objective type paper
with multiple choices, which covers subjects like physics, chemistry, maths and English.
The eligibility criteria is matriculation / class X examination or equivalent examination
from a recognized statutory board with science and math and 40% marks. Age is no bar.
The other course offered is The Technical Vocational Education Training programme:
which is a 9 month course and the notification for this course is usually published by June
/July. The Eligibility criteria is X pass, age no bar and no entrance exam.
Apart form this they also offer a Community Programme in technical training for 6
months, for which the notification is published twice a year i.e. March and October.

QS. I completed my diploma in electronic engineering in 2005. I wish to continue my


studies. Since I am working for the last one year, taking up a full-time course is not
possible for me. Which is a suitable course for me? Can I do BCA/ B Sc

ANS. BCA and B Sc Electronics, which are three year courses, may not significantly add to
your qualifications since you have already completed your diploma in engineering. In the
same three years you can complete your AMIE (Associate Member of Institution of
Engineers (www.iete.org) which is recognized all over the world as equivalent to BE.

This exam is conducted only by the Institution of Engineers which has state centres in
almost all state capitals, and a few more centres in smaller cities. AMIE is offered in
several engineering disciplines including architecture, material science, civil, electronics
and telecom, electrical, mechanical, computers, textile, production, agriculture,
aerospace, environmental, marine, chemical, mining and metallurgy engineering, among
others.
However, diploma holders can only pursue the branch in which they have done their
diploma while class 12 students can take up any branch. You can even do a part-time BE /
B Tech which is usually a four-year programme, from an engineering college which has
such a provision.

QS. What is the difference between professional education and vocational education?

ANS.Vocational education is connected with a course, designed to impart practical knowledge


and develop skills in students so that they can get a job. It develops job skills and trains
for employment related to the job market. The programmes are tailored according to the
changing demands in the job market.
Professional Education is connected with a job that needs specialized skills and a high
level of education for e.g. a medical, legal, teaching profession requires a high degree of
specialization as well as high level of education.

QS.Could you kindly give me information about vocational courses offered by


University of Delhi?

ANS.The University of Delhi has included in its curriculum a good number of vocational
courses, which have helped scores of youth to find remunerative jobs for themselves. The
Delhi University colleges offer Vocational subjects in Bachelors of Arts (B.A.) and
Bachelors of Arts - B.A. [Vocational studies.] The eligibility criteria is 10+2 with a
minimum aggregate of 40% marks in the qualifying exam., for which the merit shall be
determined on the basis of one language and three best elective subjects.
Under the Delhi University umbrella, College of Vocational Studies is the premier
institution, which offers the following subjects at the B. A. level.
Subjects offered are:-
Tourism, Office Administration and Secretarial Practice, Management and Marketing of
Insurance, Small and Medium Enterprises, Material Management, Human Resource

Ans.The South Delhi Polytechnic for Women, Offer One year, two years three years and four
years courses.
