INSTRUCTION TO CANDIDATES:
i) ii) ANSWER THREE ( 3 ) QUESTIONS ONLY. ALL WORKS SHOULD BE BASED ON THE BS 5950 AND MS 544.

THIS EXAMINATIONS QUESTIONS CONSISTS OF ( 11 ) PRINTED PAGES ONLY

SAB 3233/ SAM 4324/ SAA 4244 -1Q1. (a) States five (5) factors that may influence the lateral torsional buckling of an unrestrained beam. (5 marks)

(b)

Figure Q1 shows a simply supported 406 x 178 x UB74 of grade S460 universal beam spanning 6.0 m. It is subjected to the characteristic uniform loads from the floor slab and point load from column as indicated in Figure Q1. Based on the information given; (i) Draw the bending moment and shear force diagram of the beam. (5 marks)

(ii)

Determine the section classification of the beam. (3 marks)

(iii)

If the beam is fully restrained along the span, show that the moment capacity Mc and shear capacity Pv exceed the applied moment and shear. (8 marks)

(iv)

If, however, the lateral restraints are provided at A, B and C only, determine if the beam is safe against the lateral torsional buckling. (8 marks) If the length of stiff bearing b1 at B is 150 mm, check the buckling resistance Pbw. (4 marks)

(v)

SAB 3233/ SAM 4324/ SAA 4244 -2Q2. (a) State four (4) main characteristics of a simple construction frame. ( 6 marks)

(b)

A column of 305 x 305 x 97UC grade S275 in a simple construction two-storey building needs to be checked to resist the following factored loads: Beam reactions at 1st storey and 2nd storey, as shown in Figure Q2(a), and Self-weight of column = 1.0 kN/m.

The column height to be designed is located at the lowest storey with the heights of column for both storeys are as shown in Figure Q2(b). (i) Check the adequacy of the column assuming the effective length, LE = 0.85 L. (21 marks)

(ii)

If the building is of rigid construction, describe briefly the steps taken in designing the column. (6 marks)

Q3.

A roof truss along with the location of purlins and loads is as shown in Figure Q3. The given loads are factored loads and the distance between purlins can be taken as 1.5 m. By assuming that all connections are welded and the steel use is of grade S275; (a) Calculate the forces in all members of the truss. (8 marks)

(b)

Check whether a single angle of 90 x 90 x 10L is safe to be used as the top chord. (11 marks)

SAB 3233/ SAM 4324/ SAA 4244 -3(c) Check the adequacy of the internal member X if the section used are double angles of 2/ 90 x 90 x 10L connected back to back with a gusset plate of 8 mm thickness in between. (7 marks)

(d)

Check the adequacy of the bottom chord if the section used is still the single angle of 90 x 90 x 10L. (7 marks)

Q4.

(a)

Figure Q4(a) shows three (3) types of connection between a beam and a column. Describe how to check whether the three connections are satisfactory if the beam reactions at all connections are 200 kN, whilst the end moment is 0 kNm, 0 kNm and 6 kNm for connection 1, 2 and 3 respectively. (15 marks)

(b)

Figure Q4(b) shows a bracket connection using bolt and weld. A 15 mm thick plate of grade S275 is welded to the bracket with an E43 electrode weld of size 8mm. The plate is then bolted to the column flange using 20 mm diameter bolt of Grade 4.6. The end shear and end moment is 50 kN and 25 kNm respectively. By assuming that the axis of rotation occurs 50 mm below bolt A; (i) (ii) (iii) Determine the bolt group shear capacity. Determine the single bolt bearing capacity. Determine whether the bolted part of the connection is able to support the applied load. (iv) Determine whether the welded part of the connection is able to support the applied load. (v) Assuming that both parts of the connection (bolted and welded) failed, make two (2) suggestions to overcome the problem. (18 marks)

SAB 3233/ SAM 4324/ SAA 4244 -4Q5. (a) Explain what are the suitable conditions for a timber to be used as a structural member in a building. (5 marks)

(b)

Figure Q5(a) shows a plan layout of a building. The primary beam is made of a member of size 45 mm x 140 mm (effective). The timber is of group A grade Standard and in dry condition. Design the primary beam based on the long-term characteristic loads as follows: Dead load Imposed load = = 0.5 kN/m2 1.5 kN/m2 (14 marks)

(c)

A symmetrically loaded internal column is required to support four beams as shown in Figure Q5(b). The top and bottom can be

considered to be held in position but not in direction. A lateral restraint is provided at its mid-height as indicated. Check the adequacy of the column for a medium-term load of 25 kN. Assume that the effective size of the column is 75 mm x 150 mm of timber group A Standard and in wet condition. (The table for the modification factor K6 is provided on page 11). (14 marks)
