7he fact that chocolate is not a traditional food0 high prices and domestic production problems will pro/ide the main problems to mar8et growth. As these mar8ets de/elop0 prices will fall ma8ing these products more accessible to the wider population. .owe/er the Indian mar8et is still untapped and pro/ides immense scope for growth0 both geographicall3 as well as product bas8et wise. 5hocolates right now reaches about &%mn to &)mn consumers. It is estimated that chocolates ha/e a potential mar8et of about $$+mn consumers. Choco ate consumption in India is e2tremel3 low. Per capita consumption is around $+%gms in the urban areas0 compared to =1$%8g in the de/eloped countries. 7he per capita chocolate consumption in India is still much below the !ast Asian standards. .ence per capita consumption has an immense scope for impro/ement. In rural areas0 it is e/en lower. 5hocolates in India are consumed as indulgence and not as a snac8 food. A strong /olume growth was witnessed in the earl3 '%>s when 5adbur3 repositioned chocolates from children to adult consumption. 7he biggest opportunit3 is li8el3 to stem from increasing the consumer base. ?eading pla3ers li8e 5adbur3 and "estle ha/e been attempting to do this b3 /alue for mone3 offerings0 which are affordable to the masses. 4e also belie/e that the near term opportunit3 lies in increasing penetration rather than increasing intensit3 of consumption.
