Project 1B Natural Dye, Block and Stencil Printing

Concept of Wild Nature (Adjusted)

Natural beauty, natural growth, uncontrollable, unruly and etc., these words can be described as Wild Nature, the true beauty of nature in which human is not involved to create it. Landscapes, wild animals, wild plants or even grassland are the part of wild nature that creates such a beautiful illustration to this world. In this project the idea of wild nature is created through natural dye, block and stencil printing techniques by the used of natural product along with natural color scheme of yellow and brown scale. This conveys the image of sunlight and solid ground. To create patterns, materials where carved into a shape of dandelion (abstract) and the plastic sheet were cut out into pattern of grass filed and dandelion branch. The pattern represents natural concept to produce a textile that has an insight of beautiful scene of dandelion filed, a beautiful landscape that is natural growth and commonly found in many areas. Through blocks and stencil used, the ideas and concepts of Wild Nature have been brought onto the fabric.

Block and Stencil Prints

For this part of project I decided to create more block prints and stencil prints so it can support the idea that I tried to communicate onto the fabric. Block prints were made out of carrot and craved into dandelion abstract shape. Stencil prints are plastic sheets cut out into ground pattern, sunray pattern, dried grass filed pattern and leaf pattern.

Natural Dye
For the completion of this project, I dyed some more fabric to be used. I experiment with the red pigment from strawberry but the result seem to be not satisfied so I decided to dyed most of the fabric to yellow color from turmeric because I want to stick to the idea of sun light (yellow) as a background for all my artworks.

Number 1: Blown away

I chose this piece of artwork to be my Number 1 image because I was really happy with the final work. I like all the component that are placed in different position to create a nice beautiful scene just like how I imagined it to be. This piece of artwork strongly carried out the message I try to present onto the fabric. I enjoyed creating all pieces of artwork even thought I got a few cuts from trying to cut out the pattern on the plastic sheet I still enjoyed all the process. However it was quite difficult to work with multiple layer of the pattern. I needed to be very patient to wait for the first layer print to dry first to apply the following. It was quite frustrated but really worth it.

This piece of artwork capture the part when dandelion is blown away from the filed by the wind.

Printing paste: Permaset Textile Print Medium: Turmeric (Natural Dye Medium) Mordant: Cream of Tartar and Iodized salt (Natural Dye Mordant) Color mixture: Brown (Yellow, Red, Black), Orange (Yellow and Red) Screen Layer: First: Stencil print of Ground template with brown paint (light and darker) Second: Stencil print of Sunray template with orange paint. Last: Stencil print of leaf template with yellow paint. Artwork description: The section is the abstraction of the filed that I visualized. I had the idea of seeing the whole filed was cut into section and the result is to see each section of ground, leaf and sunray.

Second: Dried grass filed template with yellow paint. Last: Block printing of dandelion abstract with white paint. Artwork description: The filed represents the whole dandelion filed of my imagination. It has the background of yellow to demonstrate sunlight, different color of dried grass demonstrated the combination of different grass in the filed and the time at which dried out at different period of time but still stay in the same filed to create such a beautiful scene.

Printing paste: Permaset Textile Print Medium: Tea bags and coffee beans (Natural Dye Medium) Mordant: Cream of Tartar and Iodized salt (Natural Dye Mordant) Color mixture: Brown (Yellow, Red, Black) Screen Layer: First: Dried dandelion body template with dark brown paint Second: Dried dandelion body template with brown paint Third: Block printing of dandelion abstract (smaller size) with white paint Last: Block printing of dandelion abstract with yellow paint Artwork description: Dandelion shows the basic concept of dandelion filed, the combination of the dried dandelion body and its pedals blowing away from the filed.
