NORWICH DEFEATS BROWN 31-0

The good news is that we played better than we did against Harvard. Many good tackles,
more but not enough good possession, better tactical decisions but still self destructing in
key situations. Our Club numbers are pretty strong with only 4 seniors, but 18 juniors, 14
sophomores and 13 freshmen. Five sophomores and three freshmen played in this match.
So we are heading in the right direction. The debacle is in the front row where we have
lost two starting props from last year and have very little depth at this position.
Leadership, however, is excellent and the Club attitude is positive.

Brown gave up 16 point in the first half on two unconverted tries and two penalty kicks.
Between these scores, Brown spent a good deal of time camped inside the Norwich half.
A missed lineout here, a bad scrum there or a dropped ball in the backs kept foiling the
good effort by all 15 players.

Brown gave up 3 additional unconverted tries in the second half. Flanker Dave
Meisner’07 was sin-binned for repeatedly not retreating at penalty situations. During his
10 minute absence, the team did not give up a point. Although the result by this time in
the match was not in doubt, the officiating of the match disrupted any flow there might
have been, and a disagreement with the refereeing of the lineout law resulted in even less
Brown lineout possession than the first half.

Norwich appeared vulnerable in the outside backs and when we finally attacked there in
the second half, Brown made some terrific strikes into the Norwich end, which we were
unlucky not to convert. A driving lineout near the Norwich goal at the end of the match
looked like it would be driven in but was inexplicably spun to the backs which took away
our last scoring opportunity.

Two of Norwich’s tries appeared to result from forward passes and on a third, the
Norwich player stepped out of bounds. So, in spite of the resulting score and the scrappy
nature of the match, the score could and should have been closer.

BROWN SECONDS TIE 12-12

Led by team captain Dan Levitt’08, the Seconds played an emotional match with solid
tackling and good field position. And when pinned in their own end, they found a way out
with dogged defense and tactical kicking.

Norwich ran in the first try from a ruck early on and then the match see-sawed until
midway through the first half when, at a 5 meter scrum, scrumhalf David Yeh’07 took the
ball at the base of the scrum and ran it in, to tie the match at 5.

The second half was nothing short of exciting with both team’s deep attacks thwarted
time and again. With 15 minutes left in the match, Brown had a lineout 10 meters from
the Norwich line. Jumper Levitt tapped the ball to hooker Jeff Stasz’07 who ran off the
back of the lineout, split two defenders and scored. Center Ruben Madrid’07 converted
and Brown led 12-5.

Reverting to a pick and go offense and driving mauls, Norwich made their way
methodically down the field and with five minutes on the clock scored off a driving maul
under the posts. The kick was good and the score was tied.

The last five minutes saw both teams leave nothing on the field but neither team could
mount a scoring attack. Flanker/prop Kevin Thomas’07 and flanker Zach Whitener’09
were tough in defense. Lock David “boom-boom” Bloom’08 made his first power run.
Levitt’s lineout work and leadership was consistent and hooker Jeff Stasz’07 had his best
match of the year.

BROWNS THIRDS WIN AGAIN 15-0

Brown seems to always have more backs than forwards which requires many to play that
extra match to give all our players an opportunity to play. But our rookies came up big
and defeated Norwich with a display of good open play.

In the first five minutes Brown ran a penalty play near the Norwich goal and senior prop
Yale Wang had his career try, for a 5-0 lead. Norwich then camped in the Brown end but
solid defense held and Brown made a remarkable run downfield with at least 4 or 5
players handling the ball. A good run by flyhalf Cody Campanie’08 took the ball to the 5
meter line where an alert flanker Mark Fuller’09 picked up the ball and put down the try
for a 10-0 lead.

Again Norwich fought down to the Brown end, but the “Clark Kent of Brown Rugby”,
flanker Adam Emrich caught a kick, turned into “Superman” and made a remarkable 60
yard run through the entire Norwich side for Brown’s final 5 points.
