 Why Organic Cotton?
When you think of cotton, you tend to think of white, clean, fluffy
and pure. It may then surprise you to learn that the humble
cotton plant uses more pesticides per plant than almost any
other plant in the world. In fact, 22% of all insecticides and 20%
of all pesticides in the world are used in cotton growing. This
causes problems to the local environment to where the cotton
is grown. Beneficial wildlife is killed along with the pests, as
are other plants, causing an ecological imbalance. It also affects soil and water
quality. Moreover, pesticides are extremely dangerous to people. Apparently,
around 25,000 deaths a year are supposedly caused as a result of working with
these chemicals! A lot of the pesticides used are (or contain) ingredients that
were originally developed in the Second World War as nerve gases.

The chances are that there is not a lot of cotton being grown in your neck of the
woods. So it doesn’t really directly effect you, does it?
Actually - yes, it may well do.
Studies have shown that these chemicals remain in the cotton fibre even after it
has gone through all the processing to be made into final product. If the cotton
product is in contact with your skin, then your skin can absorb these chemicals.

The other problem with cotton is that it is a thirsty

crop. This is partly caused by the use of all the
chemicals and the intensive way it is farmed,
meaning that the soil quality becomes poor, leading
to erosion and the inability to retain water. In some
cotton producing areas demand for water is so
high that water sources such as lakes are drying
up, causing further damage to the surrounding environment and causing the
death of many aquatic animals, as well as the collapse of fish stocks.

However, there really is no reason why cotton shouldn’t be used. Organic cotton
is a viable solution that is already being grown and used, and removes all the
problems associated with the pesticides and insecticides used with conventional
cotton. The surrounding eco - system is not damaged, the friendly bugs are
still around (to eat the not so friendly bugs) and the organic cotton farmers are
healthier.

 The farmers actually get to make a little more money for
their crop too because they do not have to spend a fortune
on pesticides. (In some areas buying the chemicals takes
60% of their production budget, forcing many farmers
into debt).
Furthermore, other crops are planted in or around the
cotton (such as sunflowers) to keep bugs away or to
encourage predators of the unwanted bugs. These plants
can then also be sold by the farmers.

So everyone wins with organic cotton - the farmers, the

environment and of course you, as you are not wiping nasty chemicals all
over yourself or your family.
