Feast of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe The King of Kings and Servant of Servants!
Recently, two friends I havent been in touch with regularly for nearly ten years reached out to me and suggested we get together for dinner. Years earlier I married the two of them and we had a lot of catching up to do. After nearly five hours of visiting, the husband said to me, Father Pat, I found my lifes purpose; I finally know why God put me here and what he wants me to do! He said this with a profound sense of relief, gratitude and joy. It was as if he had come to the end of a lifelong search and was now embarking on a lifelong passion. In the Gospel today we see clearly that Jesus Christ knew who he was, why he was here and what he had to do. We also see that very few others understood him. Over and over again the people exhorted Jesus to save yourself! What they failed to realize was that Jesus was a Savior of everyone BUT himself! Saving himself was not his concern, nor his preoccupation nor his mission. WE were! Saving himself was someone elses job: His Father in Heaven. Since Jesus trusted that his heavenly Father (God) could do his job pretty well, he could throw himself completely into the task and mission that the Father gave him; saving us! Jesus once taught his disciples that he who exalts himself will be humbled and he who humbles himself will be exalted (Matt.23:12). He also said that anyone who wants to be first must be the servant of the rest (Mark 9:35). Jesus Christ is the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords precisely because he was willing to be the Servant of Servants! No one has served more greatly and no one is exalted more highly. Until we get this as believers, we wont get the meaning of the Christian life. So, whether you have found your life-purpose or not, todays Feast invites you to make Jesus himself your lifelong passion! When you do you will discover a new freedom to throw yourself completely into his mission of service and salvation without any fear of achieving your own. Youll know that your Father in heaven has got you covered! Copyright Father Patrick A Smith, 2013
