Course Description One of the key ingredients to be successful organization is the ability to manage information system. Some people say that nowadays, organizations can not operate without information system. It can help organizations to create new products and services faster, cheaper, and better quality. Information system can also support efficient daily operation, to provide the basis of decision making and further, to win the competition. Some important issues arise with the use of information system. These include ethics, privacy and security issues, IT investment, cyber laws, and many others. The convergence of information technology with communication technology adds the complexity of the issues. There will be new issues arise in the future due to the pervasive use of information system in organizations as well as our lives. The current course consists of four parts: Organizations, management and networked enterprise Information technology infrastructure Key system applications for the digital age Building and managing system

Course Objectives After completion of this course, students are expected to be able to:

Identify basic concepts of hardware, software, network, communication, database enterprise systems, e-commerce, knowledge management, decision support, and IT security.

Explain why information systems are so essential in business today Define an information system from both a technical and a business perspective Explain how enterprise application can improve organizational performance. Define factors in building application Analyze risk incurred in electronic commerce.

Course Materials Laudon, K. C. & Laudon, J. P. (2010), Management Information Systems - Managing the Digital Firm, eleventh edition, Pearson Education Inc., Upper Saddle River (main textbook). Note: New (12th) edition has been published. However, it is not ready in the bookstore yet. Jogiyanto H.M. (2003), Sistem Teknologi Informasi, Yogyakarta, Andi Offset. Jogiyanto H.M. (2007), Sistem Informasi Strategik untuk Keunggulan Kompetitif, Yogyakarta, Andi Offset. Jogiyanto H.M. (2009), Sistem Informasi Keperilakuan, Yogyakarta, Andi Offset, second edition. Some readings, which are obtained from various relevant sources may be used. They include papers from respected international journals.

Teaching Method Student-centered learning (SCL) method is used in this course. Students are required to be active learner to construct their own knowledge. Therefore they must actively participate in the learning process by reading the course material as well as obtaining relevant resources from journals, newspaper, magazine and internet. Lecturers role is to be a facilitator for students to attain learning objectives. Discussion, quiz and assignment are among tools that are used as part of teaching method.

Students Responsibility Each session will be opened by group presentation that will present summary of the relevant chapter(s). Each group should hand in the copy of handout version of the presentation slides. This should be done before the presentation (not after). No mark will be given if no copy submitted.

Group member who do not present the presentation is not eligible to get group presentation mark. To respect the other fellow students, the use of all wireless communication devices including the internet during the tutorial/class is not suggested. If it is needed, lecturer will ask students to do so.

Student should read relevant readings/chapter(s) before attending the class. Academic misconduct (incl. plagiarism, fake signature, etc) may lead to a failing grade (E). Make sure that each group knows the relevant chapter(s) they should present. If not, then please come and see the lecturer. Quiz can be conducted at any time (most likely weekly!!) and no information will be given beforehand. It is the students responsibility to fill in the presence form in time. In any case that student could not attend the class, please report to the Academic Affairs. Basically there will be no additional/replacement exam. Only limited reason (hospitalized or one of the family members is passed away) will be accepted. The Academic Affairs office will assess the situation.

Absenteeism Minimum of 75% attendance is required to be eligible to pass this course.
