The Christmas Parade

There is something special about an illuminated evening parade. Lively music and brightly-colored lights piercing the darkness - thats the Menomonee Falls Christmas parade. Peace on Earth is the theme for this years parade, which will be held on Dec. 1, the Sunday after Thanksgiving. The parade will start at 4:30 pm at Harrison & Main Street, travel west on Main Street and south on Appleton Avenue, finishing at Arthur Avenue. The parade attracts about 5,000 onlookers and features approximately 50 units including marching bands, horses, clowns, dancing grannies, dance teams, jugglers and stilt-walkers. Good things dont come cheaply; parades are expensive and Menomonee Falls hosts three parades a year, which is more than most communities do. Marching bands charge about $500-$1,200. Horses, clowns, dancing grannies and dancing teams, jugglers and stilt walkers all come at a price. Menomonee Falls is unique in that it runs three parades a year. The parade committee members run the Christmas parade, while the Memorial Day Parade is organized by the Knights of Columbus, and the 100-unit Independence Day Parade, which draws nearly 20,000 spectators, is organized by the Optimist Club. The three parades have an annual budget of $24,000. The Village of Menomonee Falls contributes $6,000 per year toward costs and provides many needs including police service, barricades and portable toilets. The Menomonee Falls Parade Steering Committee is responsible for raising the additional $18,000 needed each year; donations come from local businesses, community organizations and residents. The Committee has planned parades for 23 years. Current members are Jean Armitage, Ray Etzel, Greg Goss, Dan Hart, Larry Hebbring, Charlie Keller, the Falls Police Department, Robert Steliga, and Robyn Turtenwald.
