Kenya to open Palestine embassy

President Uhuru Kenyatta has pledged his support for the re-opening of the Palestinian embassy in the country. The President expressed the support on Tuesday during a meeting with Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas at the Bayan Palace in Kuwait city where he was attending the 3rd Afro/Arab Summit. The Palestine administration has requested land to build a chancery in Nairobi and the Head of State welcomed the proposal and assured that the government will provide the necessary support. Kenya acknowledges the interest of Palestine to re-open its Embassy in Nairobi and what has been requested will be considered, the President said. President Uhuru reiterated his government continued support to the Palestinian cause for an independent State. Kenya, alongside other

like-minded countries, voted in favour of a resolution of the UN General Assembly to grant Palestine the status of a non-member State of the UN, he added. A lasting solution to the Israel-Palestine conflict will immensely contribute to international peace and security, said the President. Story Continued To Page 2

Seven Kenyans detained in Uganda over alleged terrorism claims have threatened to go on hunger strike in protest against what they say is delayed justice. The Kenyans have been joined by five Ugandans who are facing the same charges and accuse the Ugandan authorities of deliberately frustrating their attempts to seek justice. The detainees who have all denied the terrorism and murder charges against them have so far spent more than three years in detention at the Luzira Maximum prison for their alleged involvement in the attack against fans watching the 2010 world cup finals. They were arrested in different part of the country and deported to Uganda in an act which provoked strong condemnation from Muslim organizations, human rights group and the High Court which accused the government of violating the constitutional rights of its citizens. After more than three years of waiting for justice, we do hereby make notice of our stand to protest. We deem this appropriate after lodging constitutional petitions at the constitutional court, said the detainees in a letter seen by The Friday Bulletin. The State has been extenuating and evasive in its obligation to grant us a fair hearing, they added, Story Continued To Page 2

Concerns over rising cases of child defilement in Wajir

Concerns have been raised over the increased cases of rape and child defilement in Wajir County. Cases of child defilement and sexual violence against minors have been on the rise especially in remote villages of the county. What is most worrying is the fact that these cases go unreported as village elders opt to solve the matter outside court through the maslah, traditional way of settling dispute in the Somali community. According to Fatuma Yusuf a human right activist, between eight and ten children are defiled monthly in Wajir East alone. Until maslah dies child defilement will not stop said Fatuma. She argued that such situations pose a great threat to the lives of many children and termed actions of elders as selfish. Fatuma who is also a county assembly representative the chairlady of Wajir-based Arid Area Paralegal Network, an NGO which advocates the rights of girls and women told the Friday Bulletin the trend is against Islamic teachings which most of the residents subscribes to and detrimental to the countys reputation. She said that instead of fighting the vice, clan elders are encouraging child defilement by settling the matter through maslah a traditional way of settling dispute. Early this month, six- year- old Maimuna (not her real name) was viciously raped by a 45- year- old man. The suspect was later arrested by the police and the case will be heard on November 21. Maimunas case is among many cases of child defilement and attempted rape, majority of which go unreported. A recent police report on sexual offenses in Wajir County pointed to 8 cases of rape and child defilements this year, a figure which Fatuma asserts does not reflect the situation on the ground as over 90 percent of rape and defilement cases go unreported because of the interventions. Speaking at a forum for persons with disability on Monday, at the Hilton Palace Hotel, Wajir Governor Ahmed Abdullahi reiterated his desire to rein in rapists and child defilers in the region. He warned elders against settling cases of rape and child defilement through maslah while stressing that his government will deal firmly with those found guilty of defiling children. Those who defile children will be met with the full might of the law. This time round we are not going to entertain any elders sit on maslah, reiterated the Governor. The Wajir County Commissioner Naftali Mung'athia, warned that any local government official found to be colluding with village elders to stop such cases from being reported will be sacked or prosecuted.

The President encouraged peaceful settlement of the dispute between Palestine and Israel, and expressed his support to the Quartet Peace Plan and the Annapolis Declarations, which affirm the commitment to the peaceful co-existence of the two states, Palestine and Israel. The Quartet Peace Plan is a road map to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, while Annapolis Declaration is the joint understanding by the two to end bloodshed, suffering and decades of conflict. At the summit which closed on Wednesday, President Uhuru Kenyatta reached out to Arab nations to support his government with the knowledge and technology to conduct cost-effective exploration and extraction of the countrys resources. We are already reaching out to various Arab states to encourage their private investors to consider the opportunities in Kenya in the oil, natural gas and energy sub-sectors, the President said. The Summit brought over 65 Arab and African presidents, Kings and heads of government. During the visit, President Kenyatta also held talks with the Amir of Kuwait His Highness Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmed Al-Jaber Al-Sabah and restated his governments commitment to work closely with Kuwait and other Arab countries to strengthen economic and cultural ties. The President also conveyed a message of condolences to the people of Kuwait over the death of Dr Abdulrahman Al-Sumait. He was a pioneer humanitarian, who founded Direct Aid which ran educational and humanitarian programmes in several countries including Kenya. Dr. Al Sumait who passed away in August this year also helped to found Umma University, the first Islamic university in the country to be recognized by the government.

Two years ago, the detainees lodged a petition in the Ugandan constitutional court seeking orders to nullify what they said was their continued illegal detention but more than two years down the line, the hearing is yet to start with reasons such as lack of quorum at the appellate court, lack of funds and death of judges cited for the failure to dispense justice. A new date had been set last month by the constitutional court but their joy was short lived as the hearing was cancelled hours before it started. There has been no communication from the judiciary with regards to the stalemate. We have sought One of the renditioned victims Omar legal means including Awadh during an appearance in a bail applications which Kampala court were lodged at different occasions to no avail, they further said in the letter. The detainees have complained of being subjected to mental and physical torture and voiced their disapproval of the medical state of affairs in prison saying that while some of them are suffering from ailments such as kidney and liver infections as well as failing eye sights, they have not been provided with specialized medical care. We earnestly seek for justice as acquiescing to the status quo is to let injustice prevail as this is morally wrong, debasing and a disgrace to humanity, they said, Our stand to protest against the indefinite detention without a fair hearing is rooted in our own humanity and love for freedom and peace for all without distinction in colour or creed, the letter added. Among those who appended their signature to the document were Muhammad Hamid Suleiman, Omar Awadh Omar, Habib Suleiman Njorioge, Idris Magondu, Yahya Suleiman Mbuthia, Hussein Hassan Agade and Muhammad Ali Muhammad. Kenyan human rights activist Al Amin Kimathi was among the detainees and spent a year in custody before charges were dropped against him two years ago. He was arrested after he travelled to Uganda to attend the hearing of the renditioned Kenyans.

the extreme Shi'ites. Others, recognizing the gruesome nature of this act, have opted out of self mutilation and resorted to donating their blood. Many Shiites believe that taking part in these mourning rituals absolves them from their sin. A popular Shiites saying says, A single tear shed for al-usayn washes away a hundred sins! The Innovation of Showing Joy and Happiness During This Day To counteract the extreme position of the Shi`ites, another extreme group called the Nawib took this day as a day of happiness. The Nawibs, which consisted mainly of the Khawrij, held animosity against al-usayn (radhiAllhu anh) and the Ahle al-Bayt. They celebrated this day by wearing new clothes, cooking special food and spending extra money on their family. The first sign of the appearance of the Khawrij was during the lifetime of the Messenger of Allh (allallhu alayhi wa sallam). Ab Sa`d al-Khudr (radhiAllhu anh) narrated: We were in the company of the Messenger of Allh (allallhu alayhi wa sallam) while he was distributing the spoils of war; there came to him DhulKhuwaysarah, from the tribe of Tamim. and said: Messenger of Allh, do justice! Upon this the Prophet (allallhu alayhi wa sallam) said: Woe to you, Who would do justice, if I do not do justice? You would be unsuccessful and incur a loss, if I do not do justice. Upon this `Umar ibn Khattb (radhiAllhu anh) said: Messenger of Allh, permit me to strike off his neck. The Messenger of Allh (allallhu alayhi wa sallam) said: Leave him; he has companions [who would outwardly look to be so religious and pious] that one of you would consider his prayer insignificant when compared to their prayer, and his fast [insignificant when] compared to their fasts. They would recite the Qur`n but it would not go beyond their collar-bones. They would pass through Islam just as an arrow passes through its prey. He would look at its iron head, but would not find anything there. He would then see at the lowest end, but would not find anything there. He would then see at its grip but there too he would not find anything. He would then look at its feathers Story Continued To Page 6

On the 10th of Muarram (the day of `shra), in the year 61 A.H. the Prophets (allallhu alayhi wa sallam) beloved grandson al-usayn bin `Al bin Ab lib (rah Allhu anhum) was martyred. Undoubtedly the murder of the grandson of the Messenger of Allh (allallhu alayhi wa sallam) was a sad day in Islamic history. However, he was not the first to be martyred; rather, he was preceded by many great companions who were also killed unjustly, including `Umar, Uthmn, al-usayns own father, `Al bin Ab lib and his brother al-Hassan (radhiAllhu anhma). After the death of Al b. Ab Tlib (radhiAllhu anh), some of the companions pledged allegiance to al-asan (radhiAllhu anh), regarding whom the Messenger of Allh (allallhu alayhi wa sallam) said: This son of mine is a chief, and Allh will make peace between two large groups of Muslims through him. (Bukhari) After a short period he was also martyred, and some tribes wrote to his brother al-usayn (radhiAllhu anhu) promising him support and allegiance if he was to come to them at Kfa. Ibn `Abbs and Ibn `Umar (radhiAllhu anhum) both advised al-usayn against accepting their invitation, as they felt that the people inviting him were treacherous and untrustworthy. Al-usayn (radhiAllhu anh) relying on the words of the Kfans set out for the city with his family and followers. On the way he was deserted by his followers and betrayed by the Kfans. Consequently, he was left with a small band consisting of his family members and friends (a total of 72 people) in the middle of the sandy desert of Karbala fighting against the governor of Kfa, `Ubayd Allh bin Ziyd, and his troops of more than 4000 men. The entire group was massacred on the 10th of Muarram. It was after this incident that the Shiites, who considered Alusayn (radhiAllhu anh) as the third Imm and rightful successor of the Prophet, began to take this day as a day of grief and sadness, mourning the fact that they were not present at the battle to fight and save al-usayn and his family. Ibn Taymiyyah writes: Satan took the opportunity with the death of al-usayn (radhiAllhu anh) to introduce two innovations: the innovation of showing sadness and mourning on the day of `shra by slapping, screaming, crying and lamenting, and (the innovation of) cursing the ahbas (companions of the Prophet). He then reminds the reader that wailing and excessive mourning over past calamities was clearly prohibited by Allh and His Messenger. Allh (ubhnahu wa tal) says in the Qur`n: We will try you with fear and hunger, and loss of wealth and lives, and fruits; but give glad tidings to those who are patient. Who, when a misfortune overtakes them, say: `To Allah we belong and to Him we shall return. It is these on whom descend blessings and mercy from their Lord, and it is they who are rightly guided. (Surat Baqara: 155-157) Also the Messenger of Allh (allallhu alayhi wa sallam) said: He who slaps his cheeks, tears his clothes and follows the ways and tradhitions of the Days of Ignorance is not one of us. (Bukhari) In another adth the Messenger of Allh (allallhu alayhi wa sallam) said: There are four characteristics among my people that belong to the pre-Islamic (jhiliyyah) period which they have not abandoned: boasting of high rank, reviling other peoples' genealogies, seeking rain by stars, and wailing. He (further) said: If the wailing woman does not repent before she dies, she will be made to stand on the Day of Resurrection wearing a garment of brass and an armor of mange. (Muslim) The Shiitesin addition to public processions of ceremonial chest beating, wailing, injuring oneself and cursing Ab Bakr, `Umar (raiyallhu anhum) and the rest of the companionsavoid all manifestations of joy during this month. They refrain from eating meat and avoid getting married or wearing new clothes during this month and especially during this day. Images of men and small boys slashing themselves with razors or knives, allowing their blood to run freely over their bodies is common among some of

Hijrah of the Prophet and Hijrah Today

By Maaria Zain Leaving in the deep of the night. Fleeing for ones life. Making a move to seek refuge in Allah and Allah alone. Starting a new life in an unknown and new land. Feeling homesick, nostalgic and emotional towards everything that has been left behind. Hijrah, in general, is an emotional plight. We know the historical pieces of Hijrah that drove the small group of believing Muslims away from persecution and into safety, only to be faced with new challenges, such as attacks from various tribes that were sparked by the emigration. This was all done for Allah and because it was a turning point in Islamic history, it pays heed to reflect on the social lessons derived from this pivotal change for Muslims and apply it for the Hijrahs of today. While the handful of Muslims had moved together as an ummah and founded the first civilization in Madinah the first known to humankind, we have to remember that each of the companions including the female ones faced their own personal Hijrahs journeys and challenges in their own right. Women Had Their Own Challenges Asmaa bint Abu Bakr spent the first nights of her father and the Prophets departure, sashaying food to them through the turbulent desert, while the men were wildly hunted down by their own tribes. She was brutally assaulted by archenemy Abu Jahl, when she refused to provide or reveal the whereabouts of the two beloved men in her life. Umm Salama, another comrade, and later a wife of the Prophet, was torn away from her family during the Hijrah. Already an outcast to her family, she spent a while before she was able to be reunited with her children (who had been taken from her) and her husband, who had left for Madinah. Then, there was Prophet Muhammads eldest daughter who had to leave her husband in later years, and make her way to Madinah in her own personal Hijrah, as her beloved husband refused to share her faith. Every single woman of the time iconic as they are now went through challenges and obstacles of their own in order to attain the recognition of greatness in Islam. In todays age, challenges and obstacles still exist, only in different forms. Yet they are here and bear great importance, as every single Muslimah, makes her own Hijrah (whether physical or not) for our own self-betterment, social extractions of the Islamic emigration can be infused in our lives to make each journey smoother, and a more spiritual one in order to please Allah Taala. Hijrah: the Storm before the Calm The Hijrah was not a simple journey. It did not happen overnight but, there were months and months of planning that took place before the actual journey began. This is important to remember because we often forget that change is gradual, even if it is just writing out a plan or putting little things together. The big even will eventually materialize, but it takes time and effort for it to come together. The Hijrah was also seen as the storm before the calmness and warmth of Madinah. Prophet Muhammad (salallahu alayhi was sallam) and his followers had spent years and years of spreading Islam in treacherous conditions. It was not easy for them to keep on going, but the directives of Allah to maintain good relations with kin was still loud and clear, and they were compelled to continue to preach the Oneness of God. After continuous efforts and successfully having stronghold icons like Hamzah Ibn Abdul Mutalib and Umar Ibn Khattab embraced Islam, the Quraysh had grown agitated. They began to hunt and torture the poorer Muslims relentlessly. The Hijrah came at a muchneeded time where their lives were at stake and they had to leave to save themselves. Although our Hijrahs will not be of such great magnitude today, it is important to remember that these changes do not come easy. But,
our efforts to change will always be followed up with Allahs help and guidance, as compared to not putting any effort in at all. There will be sandstorms and torrential rains that will push us to breaking point, but with every hardship comes a double ease, and we have to go through these challenges before arriving at our personal states of calm. Renewing Intentions for the Sake of Allah The Hijrah comprised of a variety of people. While by far, the majority of them were upon the emigration for the sake of Allah, there were those who had other intentions, such as moving for business opportunities or for getting married. While these were not wrong for the Hijrah, their rewards were only based on their intentions. Similarly, with our own personal Hijrahs, reassessing our intentions for all the right reasons will ultimately set the paths to the right goals and in turn, will reap the right rewards and blessings in order to undergo such changes. The Hijrah is a great reminder to renew our intentions throughout the changes we go through, so we dont fall waylay along the way. Wishing the Same for Ones Sister The Hijrah teaches values of brotherhood between the Ansar and Muhajireen at Madinah. The Ansar took in the Muhajireen without second thoughts, providing them home, food and shelter and were praying with them in the new Masjid that was built in Madinah. Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) preached about the importance of holding on to each other as one community, and this is a much-needed reminder in todays divided society. Remembering to wish the same for a sister as ones self is part and parcel of a believers faith; what a great lesson from the Hijrah, especially in todays world of consumerism and materialism.what is it that we really want for ourselves and our sisters? Going through changes are wonderful times to reassess what we really mean when we talk about success, happiness and guidance. Learning from the Past, While Moving On No matter what we are moving away from, whether good or bad; the past is part of us and carries lessons for the future, influencing our decisions and shaping our opinions of things to come. The Hijrah is actually not a one-stop solution to our problems or a dead end of an opportunity. The journey continues, much like journey of the Muslims, whose ultimate goal was to return to Makkah.

The Friday Bulletin

By Altaf Husain How would you answer this question? As a young Muslim, do you feel this question is relevant to you at all? Have you discussed it with your friends? Is it a question you have thought about? Do you understand why not? If you are uncertain about how you would answer this question, don't worry. Perhaps the most misunderstood of all human relationships is the premarital relationship between young men and women, especially among those who are just coming of age and coming to terms with their sexuality. The dominant understanding is that premarital relationships should be allowed and even encouraged. The most common arguments are that premarital relationships help to socialize young people to deal with one another, and that they help those who are looking to get married to have up close and personal, intimate knowledge of their potential spouse. Do you agree with these two arguments? Do they reflect your way of thinking? The latter argument couldn't be further from the truth. Learning to socialize with the opposite sex, however, is a commendable personal goal, but it cannot be left to chance and definitely need not involve having an intimate, physical relationship with a member of the opposite sex. Are Islamic Teachings Old-Fashioned? Depending on your upbringing, who your friends are, and your exposure to television shows and movies, you might have been socialized to believe that premarital relationships are glamorous, filled with romantic overtures, and a natural expression of a man's attraction towards a woman. In fact, some young Muslims are so convinced that premarital relationships are the norm rather than the exception that, when told "dating is haram [forbidden]," they respond by saying, "Why is Islam so backward? Why can't we just get with the times and realize that today, premarital relationships are OK because not everyone is thinking about sex all the time." Even the premise that the Islamic prohibition on premarital relationships is rooted solely in the notion that people think about sex all the time is false. There is no outright prohibition of friendship between men and women and, yes, those friendships can also be warm, caring, and long lasting. The important question is, how are these men and women related to one another? In Islam, men and women who are ineligible to get married to one another, who are each other's mahrams, that is, are able to have very powerful, long lasting, warm and caring, platonic relationships. It is helpful to review who these people are. In Surat An-Nur, after telling the believing men to lower their gaze, Allah Almighty continues in the next verse: And say to the believing women that they should lower their gaze and guard their modesty; that they should not display their beauty and ornaments except what (must ordinarily) appear thereof; that they should draw their veils over their bosoms and not display their beauty except to their husbands, their fathers, their husband's fathers, their sons, their husbands' sons, their brothers or their brothers' sons, or their sisters' sons, or their women, or the slaves whom their right hands possess, or male servants free of physical desire, or small children who are not yet aware of the private aspects of women; and that they should not strike their feet in order to draw attention to their hidden ornaments. And O ye Believers! turn ye all together towards Allah, that ye may attain Bliss. (An-Nur 24:31) So, yes, in principle, there is no problem with men and women being friends, as long as the men are in any of the categories described above in Surat An-Nur, verse 31. For those men who are non-mahrams, that is, eligible to be married, the risk is always there that one or the other will become vulnerable and will incline towards the other outside of the framework of a marital contract. Think about it. If you have come of age recently, you know that with the onset of puberty you experienced distinct and profound changes in your body. Among those changes were an increased awareness of your own sexuality and the occurrence of 'wet dreams,' or nocturnal emissions. With hormones raging and very new and intense

Premarital Relationships Why Not?

feelings of sexual stimulation, sometimes brought on by the least provocation, it is possible that a young person will become preoccupied with thinking about sex, even if he or she takes no action to actually attempt to relieve his or her sexual tension. The fact of the matter is, sexual desires become pronounced and you might have experience mixed emotions, including confusion, guilt, and outright shame. Our beloved Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) understood human development well. In a teaching narrated to us by `Abdullah ibn Mas`ud, (may Allah be pleased with him), the Prophet admonished young people thus, "O young men! Whoever among you can marry, should marry, because it helps him lower his gaze and guard his modesty (i.e., his private parts from committing illegal sexual intercourse etc.), and whoever is not able to marry should fast, as fasting diminishes his sexual power." (Al-Bukhari) Timeless Islamic Teachings We often end up falling into the trap of believing that maybe Islamic teachings are outdated and old-fashioned. On the contrary, Muslims accept the Qur'an and the teachings of our beloved Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) as comprehensive, universal, and timeless. Therefore, no matter where or during what time period in human history, premarital relationships have and will be forbidden because of the detrimental impact on the people involved as well as on society in general. Allah Most High ordains upon us a lifestyle according to which human life is sacred and which considers righteous conduct, mutual respect, and chaste and dignified relations to be the norm rather than the exception. We read in the Qur'an O Prophet! When believing women come to thee to take the oath of fealty to thee, that they will not associate in worship any other thing whatever with Allah, that they will not steal, that they will not commit adultery (or fornication), that they will not kill their children, that they will not utter slander, intentionally forging falsehood and that they will not disobey thee in any just matter,- then do thou receive their fealty, and pray to Allah for the forgiveness (of their sins): for Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful (Al-Mumtahanah 60:12) In the context of social relations, Allah Most High has ordered men and women who wish to establish an intimate and physical relationship to do so by signing a contract, to bind each of them to certain rights and responsibilities towards the other. The marital relationships is characterized therefore as a "solemn covenant," (An-Nisaa' 4:21). Contrast a "solemn covenant," to having no contract and no covenant whatsoever. In a premarital relationship there is no contract. There might be some commitment but it is not stipulated by any conditions: both the man and the woman can walk away from the relationship without any fear of breaching a contract, because there is none. Ashura: A Day of Joy or Grief?

this is a wretched innovation (bid`ah) which the Messenger of Allh (allallhu alayhi wa sallam) never practiced nor did the rightly guided caliphs, and neither was it recommended by any of the great Imms such as, Mlik, at-Thawr, al-Layth b. Sd, Ab Hanfah, al-Awz, ash-Shfi, Amad b. Hambal, Ishq b. Rhyeh (may Allh be pleased with them all), nor by other such scholars. Rather some of the later followers started to instruct in some of these things and claimed that there were some authentic adith supporting their view. But these people are clearly mistaken and are in error according to the people of knowledge. Imm Amad was asked about the adth: One should spend on his family on the day of `shra and regarded it as unauthentic. To conclude, what is clearly established from the Sunnah is the fasting on the 9th and 10th of Muarram. As for mourning, displaying sadness, or celebrating by making special foods, wearing new clothes, etc. then it is all innovations.

and would find nothing stick to them [as the arrow would pass so quickly that nothing would stick to it] neither excrement nor blood. They would be recognized by the presence of a black man among them whose upper arms would be like a woman's breast, or like a piece of meat as it quivers, and they would come forth at the time when there is dissension among the people. Ab Sa`d (radhiAllhu anhu) said: I testify to the fact that I heard it from the Messenger of Allh (allallhu alayhi wa sallam), and I testify to the fact that `Al b. Ab Tlib (radhiAllhu anhu) fought against them and I was with him. He gave the orders for that man and he was sought for; when he was brought, I looked at him and he was exactly as the Messenger of Allh (allallhu alayhi wa sallam) had described. (Muslim) The Shi`ites and the Khawrij opposed each other by introducing an innovation in the religion. So while one group lamented and mourned on this day the other group celebrated and made it a day of happiness. As for the Ahl as-Sunnah they oppose both of these groups, neither making it a day of celebration nor a day of mourning. This is the established practice of the companions and the pious predecessors, including the four Imms: Imm Ab Hanfah, Imam Mlik, Imm ash-Shfi and Imm Amad (May Allh be pleased with them all). The Messenger of Allh (allallhu alayhi wa sallam) said: You must follow my sunnah and the sunnah of the rightly-guided caliphs. Hold on to it and stick fast to it. Avoid newly invented matters [in the religion], for every newly invented matter is an innovation, and every innovation is a misguidance. Hijrah of the Prophet

As they settled down in Madinah, there were numerous attacks upon them, as their dawah work spread as an institution (state), rather than at an individual level. This was a grave threat to the people of Makkah, especially the Quraysh tribe, who were unable to eradicate such a movement at such a grand scale. Humiliated and dejected, the Quraysh attacked the Muslims outwardly, and when they could not kill off their spirit even when the Quraysh were victorious at the Battle of Uhud, they began to create allies within Madinah, through Jewish tribes, and attacked from within. The Muslims, even though, escaped persecution in their homeland, were still at risk in Madinah, after a moment of calm, while they settled down in the relatively safe environment. They still had to fight battles, lives were still lost and families were torn apart. And this is the same for Hijrahs today. They are journeys. Just because a major change happened, it does not mean life comes to a stop. More challenges come along the way maybe even more difficult ones forcing ourselves to look forwards and renew our intentions at every possible juncture. Putting trust in Allah, and Allah Alone At the end of the day, much like the comrades of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), and some of the many iconic women of the time, like Asma, Umm Salama and Zaynab, we have to remember to put our trust in Allah. After planning, strategizing and thinking out of a big change, we can have so much control over our situations; whether it is entering into a marriage or taking an opportunity to climb the corporate ladder. Women all over the world face challenges of their own, whether personal, family, professional, or spiritual in nature. Some of them are physical Hijrahs, where they move from one place to the other and every single change needs to be endorsed by Allah Taala for it to happen smoothly.

Leaders out to solve border wrangles

County leaders from Garissa and Wajir have vowed to find a long- term solution to border disputes after two rival clans living in Hagarar along Garissa-Wajir border clashed leading to the death of one person. A seven kilometer stretch between Wajir South and Lagdera constituencies was the center of the dispute, a problem leaders tried to address over the past years without much success. In efforts to calm tensions, Garissa governor Nathif Jama and his Wajir counterpart Ahmed Abdullahi led a delegation of local leaders who visited the area on a pacification mission. Addressing residents, Nadhif said that the family that lost one of their own in the dispute will be compensated. We will not allow this fighting to continue. We will try our best and promise to find a solution as soon as possible, said the governor. On his part, the Wajir governor termed the dispute political and asked the communities to restrain from any kind of confrontation. He appealed to the two clans to value peace and live amicably as it has always been the case. The leaders said that a North Eastern parliamentary group meeting will be held in Nairobi in a bid to find a lasting solution. Other leaders from the region voiced their concern over the matter urging the communities to allow for a peaceful resolution. Garissa Senator Yussuf Haji felt that there was a need to end the feud within the shortest time possible. In this case we cannot wait for a boundary commission to be put in place. I think the government should move in very fast, he said. Mainly occupied by pastoralist communities, North Eastern region for a long time has witnessed a series of inter-clan clashes which have led to the loss of tens of lives.

Drug Addicts to be Rehabilitated

Drug addicts in Malindi town, Kilifi asked area community organizations (CBO) and non-governmental organizations fighting against drugs to help rehabilitate them. The chairman of Malindi anti- drug committee Famau Mohamed Famau said the over 100 men and women in their youthful age confessed to engaging excessively in drugs but were now ready to change. Mr. Famau asked the Kilifi County government to support the antidrug campaign by setting aside funds for the rehabilitation of the addicts in the area so that they could change and become useful members of the society in future. He said drug addiction among the youth in the town has reached alarming stages and intervention measures were necessary to reduce the menace, and asked government agencies and donor volunteers to come to their aid. Coastal region especially Malindi is well known for its great abuse of drugs ranging from heroin, cocaine, brown sugar, marijuana, hashish and khat, he said.

Kakamega Jamia mosque in Sh40 million expansion plans

Kakamega Jamia Mosque and Islamic Centre has embarked on an ambitious Sh40 million expansion plan to upgrade its facilities to cater for the increasing numbers of worshippers and allow worshippers to practice their religious obligations without hindrances. The project which will comprise the construction of a four storey building is expected to start early next year. Among the proposed amenities will be men and women prayers' halls, spacious conference hall, ablution facilities and administration offices among other facilities. Addressing worshippers at the mosque after the Jumaa (Friday) prayers last week, the centre chairman Sheikh Abdalla Ateka said his committee also plans to establish a waqf project to improve on income generation and expand its support to areas such as education bursaries, health assistance, the needy and the welfare of the widows, orphans and elderly persons. The present mosque which was built in 1974 is currently unable to cater for large numbers of worshippers especially during Fridays and Ramadhan where some worshippers are forced to perform their prayers in the open under scorching sun and rain. Sheikh Ateka appealed to donors, well-wishers and Muslim charitable organizations to come out and support the initiative for the benefit of the Muslim community

Be wary of divisionary groups, Muslims told

Muslims have been advised to adhere to the teachings ascribed in the Quran and the Sunnah and be wary of groups who are bent on bringing discord among Muslims through reviling the noble companions of the Prophet sala Allahu alayhi sallam. Such groups who present themselves under the garb of Islam seek to see Muslims disunited and leave the guidance and message left by the Prophet peace be upon him which the companions earnestly upheld and helped to spread around the world. Sheikh Fathuddin Thangal, the chairman of the Jamia Mosque Majlis Ulamaa said such misguided factions were bent on bringing discord between Muslims and creating divisions in the community. These enemies of Islam want to cover the fact of history and bring concoctions so that Muslims should not know the reality, he said at an award ceremony for the winners of the al-Aal and the al-Ashaab (Prophets household and his companions) competition where he represented the director of the Cultural Attach at the Saudi Arabian embassy Anwar Abdul Aziz al Souly. Contrary to their perceptions, he said the Prophets household and the companions (May Allah be pleased with them) enjoyed a cordial relationship and supported each other. Even Ali bin Abi Talib may Allah be pleased with him married his daughter Umm Kulthum to Umar Ibn Khattab, he said. The event is notable because it goes against claims being spread that the second Caliph Umar and Ali who was later to become the fourth Caliph were mortal enemies. The competitions organized by the Committee for Dawa in Africa based in Riyadh Saudi Arabia attracted more than 560 participants who participated in the competition. Two winners including the Imam of Athi River Mosque Sheikh Ali Abdallah Omar and Abdillahi Farih Tarar from Garissa won fully paid hajj packages which they undertook last month while other winners were awarded laptops, digital Quran sets and Samsung galaxy smart phones.

One Shilling Foundation rescues abandoned orphans

Seventeen years old Fauzia was raised up by her single mother after their father disappeared without trace from their home while at a very tender age. The mother later died when Fauzia was only eleven and left three other siblings; Najma who is now 15 years old, Feisal who is now 11 and Abdulmalik who is now 6 years old. It was Fauzia who assumed the role of being the mother of her 3 siblings. She had to carry Abdulmalik on her back every morning to Eastleigh to beg from well wishers for food and clothes. This happened for quite some time before a neighbour who used to reside with them in Dandora noticed their disappearance and wanted to find out what happened with the children when their mother passed on. He took several months before he noticed that the Al-Toto Missionary Church a Korean oriented Christian Group - had long adopted the kids when they found them in the slums and were in danger of dying from hunger and malnutrition. They took the four in their convent and were in the process of adopting them to the Christian faith. Fauzia being of a reasonable age resolved that they should not be kept apart from each other as the other two were very young. She opted for the option of the Korean missionary renting a house for them outside the Church premises for Ksh. 3,000 per month and also be provided with food. This trend continued for several years until the Father of the Church started making direct advances towards the older girl to join the Sisters session with a view of converting them to Christianity. The deputy Imam of Jamia Mosque Sheikh Juma Amir who stays within the vicinity came to learn of the predicaments facing the orphaned children and what the church was actually doing to completely get them away from their religion of Islam. He could not withstand the situation and petitioned several Muslim organisations to save the children. The One Shilling Foundation Marketing Director Sister Maryam Kibunja mobilised a group of supporting sisters to save the innocent children the horrid life they were leading. A sisters meeting was convened at Jamia Mosque and more than 30 sisters from various Women Groups attended and pledged to pay the fees, accommodation and other personal requirements of the four children. The two boys were taken to Kisumu and enrolled in a Muslim boarding primary school that has an integrated system of Education. The girls were taken to Al Momin Girls Institute that caters for Muslim girls Islamic training and other technical skills. Currently they are all happily settled and now they are getting on well with their studies away from the psychological tortures they used to go through every day. We would like to thank all those who voluntarily donated towards this noble cause and our prayer is that Allah will amply reward you all for your generous donations We still need to support these children as they endeavour in their studies in the current schools. We therefore appeal for more donors to come forward and support One Shilling Foundation in helping this case in particular and such other cases that we encounter in our community more often.
