Fanshawe professor and award-
winning chef Scott Baechler left
the classroom to travel to Basel,
Switzerland to compete with the
national culinaryteamintheSalon
Culinaire Mondial deemed one
of the three most prestigious culi-
nary competitionsintheworld.
This is as highas it gets, said
Baechler, amild-manneredmanof
41, who travelled to Switzerland
November 18 for thecompetition,
which runs fromNovember 23 to
27.
The competition itself consists
of two components; hot served
cold, andcoldshowsalon which
Canadahistorically excelsin.
It wont be a walk in the park,
however.
Its not a vacation, he said.
They will probably have wash-
roombreakswrittenintotheitiner-
ary.
TheGoderich, Ontario nativeis
used to travel, having lived and
worked in several places before
Fanshaweenteredthepicture.
I did seven years in Toronto, I
livedintheLeewardIslandsinthe
Caribbean, all over outwestand
United Emirates in Dubai, he
said.
But the former executive chef
never really set his sights oncom-
petitionslikethis.
Its always something thats
been on the back burner for me,
saidBaechler. At ayounger ageI
wasmorefocusedonbusiness, get-
tingmy headwithinthehotelsand
reaching the executive chef level,
soI put that stuff onhold.
Nowtheopportunityshereand
Imgoingtocookmyheartoutand
seewhat happens.
Andsofor thepast fewmonths,
Baechler has beengettingtoknow
his teammates, despite players
changinginandout.
Strategizing [and] gelling of
the teamis incredibly important,
hesaid. Youcanhaveindividuals
who havegreat skillsets, but if the
dynamics dont work, or commu-
nication or trust doesnt work, its
achallenge.
Though Team Canada partici-
pates in competitions based in
Switzerland, Luxembourg, New
York and Germany, its uncom-
mon that core teammembers will
gotoall four.
In a perfect world, Id love to
gotoall four [competitions], said
Baechler. It isaveryheavywork-
load, youcanimaginethisisontop
of your regular scheduleof work.
Each competition is a little bit
different, said Baechler. Some
core members may stay the full
four years, inmorecases thannot,
theplayerschangeinandoutbased
ondynamics, basedonavailability,
basedonschedules.
Like Baechler, his Canadian
teammatesall holdregular jobs.
And thats what sets Team
Canada apart from countries like
Sweden. While Canada is known
to be competitive, other countries
will pay their competitors to focus
on training, which he sees as a
hugecompetitiveadvantage.
As far as we go, I think the
biggest thing is, weve got a new
style, which is pretty aggressive,
hesaid. Either thejudgesarereal-
ly goingtolikeit, or they wont.
Baechler will return to teach
after Basel, but whatsnext for the
chef?
Professional development is
very important to me, he said.
Most chefs arevery creative, and
they want to be pushed and they
want to becomebetter. Its aself-
evaluation thing, or else I would
die. Youd just become compla-
cent.
Im proud of the things Ive
been a part of here at Fanshawe,
andthesmall things that Ivebeen
able to make Rather than look
back, I want tolook forward.

Get to know your neighbours,
people. It could be the first step
toward bridging the miscommuni-
cation gap between London resi-
dentsandstudents.
TheCity of Londonscorecom-
munity groups wererepresentedat
the Town and Gown meeting,
whichtook placeNovember 13.
The topic of discussion that
night was Project L.E.A.R.N.
(Liquor Enforcement And
Reductionof Noise). Accordingto
Tony Frost, executive director of
reputation and brand management
at Fanshawe College, the forum
washeldfor residentsandstudents
to voice their concerns, thoughts
andcomments.
TownandGownismakingsure
were aware of what is going on
between each other, said Frost.
Then were working towards
solutions that help us interact bet-
ter.
Having everybody come and
say how they feel and describe
their interactions really helps us
get toapoint wherewecanstart to
come up with solutions that will
remedy thesituation, Frost said.
AdamGourlay, president of the
Fanshawe Student Union (FSU)
came out of the meeting with the
impressionthat peoplearestrong-
ly opinionated when it comes to
Project L.E.A.R.N.
People were too strong on
where they stand, said Gourlay.
Is either side of it 100 per cent
correct? No. But both sides made
good points and it shows wehave
towork together asacommunity.
Gourlay was reported by
London Community News saying,
TheFanshaweStudentUnionwas
putinanuncomfortablepositionas
it was perceived by much of the
public that we were aware of the
pursuitsof the(LPS).
However, he and the Student
Union believe Project L.E.A.R.N.
will serve students best by devel-
opingintoaneducationpiece.
We believe that Project
L.E.A.R.N. is essential for devel-
opingastrongcommunityrelation-
ship, hesaid.
Gourlay also said that thedoor-
to-door tactic couldbehelpful, but
only withadifferent approach.
If theydontgather information
if they just talk to students and
maketheir presenceknownjust by
talking and being friendly and
open-minded and communicative,
thatswherethebenefit lies.
From Frosts perspective as a
voting member on the Town and
Gown Committee, he saw light
bulbsgoingoff onbothsides.
At the end of the day, I think
well all come away with a more
enlightenedviewof eachother and
the actions that we take and how
they affect eachother, saidFrost.
But change will not happen
overnight.
Everybody will have to go
away and formulate their own
responsetotheissues.
With waves of new students
coming into London every year,
for GourlayandtheStudentUnion,
continuation of their door-to-door
practiceswill hopefullystir change
andsquashthetrend.
Fanshawes numbers for the
amounts of incidences has gone
down, and theres a reason, said
Gourlay. Because of constant,
consistent, transparent communi-
cation.
The FSU president and his/her
executive council go door-to-door
at peak times of theschool year
beginning, Halloween, St.
Patricks and end to let students
know when police are out in full
forceandwhy.
It takes us a couple hours, but
we still do it, said Gourlay.
Were going into [the areas] no
matter whos in this residence,
were going to talk to themif we
can.
Tomoveforward, Frostsuggests
the meeting facilitated conversa-
tionandunderstanding.
You have to appreciate what
theother bringstowhereyouare,
he said. I do believe that at the
very least, youve gone through
this process, people will be more
aware of each other. And thats
going to lead to a good place for
us.

unofficial mottos of NaNoWriMo
is quantity over quality, which
encourages writers to focus onthe

This year, the competition has

A year has passed since

As a mother who has lost a

Amandasstoryandher messageis
so important and so strong that it

We can learn so much from

And thats exactly what she is
doing; travelling and promoting

the Amanda Todd Legacy in the
hopethat kidsandteenagersarent
pushedtosuicidehavingstruggled
with bullying or mental health
issues.
I sometimes givemy cell num-

Amanda Todds legacy has
already helped some children in

in a bond only those who have

In the audience [of a social

for this boy to go to Toronto last
August to meet this other boy that
had been bullied. The meeting
ignited a friendship between the
two. They spent aweek going to

alike, with their heavyset appearance and
proneness to spurt out inappropriate com-
ments. Two classics include, Ohmy god, I
never want to hurt a bike. Thats the last
thingI want todo, preciouslittlebikes and
Imsick of youpeople, yourenothingbut
apack of ficklemushhead. Youll bequite
surprised at who actually said what. The
thingabout Quimbyisthat hiscommentsare
written by professional comedians to be
funny, whileFordjust seemstonot havethe

Taking bribes from the local Mafia and
giving handouts to the police chief come
along with the job, and its not like

Stubbs the Cat
This feline seems like he was born to be
mayor. After beingfoundinaboxoutsideof

tokeepStubbsbecausehedidnothaveatail.
After locals didnt approve of any of the
human candidates running for office in the
small townof Talkteena, Alaska, theydecid-
ed as a joke to nominate the tailless feline,
whowonandhasbeenmayor ever since, for
thelast 16years.
Why he is a better mayor:
Thanks to Stubbs, thousands of tourists
come to Talkteena to see this pawesome
mayor. Fanswritehimlettersandsendpost-
cards heevenhashisownfanclub. Stubbs
has boosted thelocal economy and brought
positiverecognitionto his city, unlikesome

Antanas Mockus
Thisformer professor at theUniversity of
Colombia decided to try some very uncon-
ventional campaigntacticsandtreat histime
inofficeas asocial experiment, whichpaid
off and won him the title of Mayor in
Bogot, Colombia.
Why hes a better mayor:
Mockus is aman who knows how to get
thepublicsattentionandtakeaction. While
presentingalecturetoacrowdof disruptive
students, hedecided to drop trou and moon
his entire class. Mockus explained his
actions as an act of symbolic violence,
saying, Innovativebehaviour canbeuseful
whenyourunout of words.
For someoddreason, theuniversitydidnt
seeit as alearning experiencelikeMockus
did, and reprimanded him until he was
forced to resign. Imsure the students fell
awfully silent after seeingtheir middle-aged
teacher goall AceVenturaonthem.
This, of course, just motivated Mockus,
deciding to run for mayor with no previous
experience, which just makes his feats that
muchmoreimpressive.
Under Mockuss two-term rule, Bogot
saw improvements such as water usage
dropping 40 per cent, the homicide rate
falling70per cent, andtrafficfatalitiesdrop-
ping by over 50 per cent. Mockus was so
well-likedbythecitizensthat whenheasked

Vietnam.
There is absolutely no transparency for
either of the two agreements. This isnt
going through governments; this is being
negotiated by corporate interests and work
for their benefit alone. The people have no

Being a good politician takes finesse.
When you look at someone like Prime
Minister StephenHarper, whoisveryprivate
and reserved, you see a deliberate effort to
control the amount of material that can be
usedagainst him. Enter RobFord. Theman
isabull inachinashop. Hecanturnachar-

Thesheer absurdityof Fordsbehaviour in
recent weeks has gottenhimmorepublicity
than money could ever buy. It began with
less disastrous gaffes like reading while
driving, andspraininghisanklesteppingoff
of an oversized scale during his short-lived
effort to lose weight. His more recent
behaviour, however, has been no laughing
matter.
His notoriety has increased to the extent
that Saturday Night Live openedwithaFord
sketch on November 16, and just two days
later he had an exclusive on Anderson
Cooper 360. A 360 correspondent met with
Doug Ford, Robs brother and Toronto city
councillor, andtheMayor himself, at asub-
sidized housing complex in Toronto to ask
Ford about the action taken against himby
City Council. Fordhadjust hadhis mayoral
powersinseveral areasstrippedbyavoteof

Theinterviewwas uninteresting as far as
revealing any new scandals, but interesting

Ford interview can besummed up with the

all of the chaos, a normal person would be

Mayor Ford is unapologetic for his in-
your-faceattitude. Itswhat makeshimpop-

make no mistake, there are still plenty out
there. Fords popularity actually jumped by
five per cent upon news that police had

ThemediahasdestroyedFordscredibili-

one of buffoonery. The Anderson Cooper

exception was a short interview with a

You are not original. This is what the
vast majority of artists, beit rappers, writ-
ers or visual artists tenaciously resist.
Themoment youreborninto this world
the moment your senses are affected by
your surroundings you lose the right to
call yourself an original. Everything
youveexperiencedaffects youinvariable
ways from that point forward. You are
incapable of being an unbiased entity.
When youre born, you hear the doctors
voice, feel your body against your moth-
ers, smell the flowers sitting on the win-
dowsill, taste the milk, see the ceiling of
the room, and you are no longer a blank
canvas.
As we continue to move through our

Not evenartisticstyleisexempt fromthe
fact that it has been done, thought, felt
before. You retain it all and the culmina-
tion becomes your ever-expanding arsenal
of artistic referencefor whenits your turn
to create something. Wilson Mizner, an
American playwright, said it best: If you
steal from one author, its plagiarism; if
you steal frommany, its research. Even
artistic powerhouses David Bowie,
Woody Allen, Kurt Vonnegut, Pablo
Picasso admit to using ideas fromtheir
predecessors. And now we draw from
them.
Theres a viral video infecting the
Internet in which a boy freestyle raps and
as his friendcalls out thenames of famous
rappers, hechanges his voiceto imperson-
ate them. The video, with over 15 million
hits, has received an uproar of criticism
saying that hes not talented because hes
just copying those who really are. The
Originals. But Drake and Lil Wayne have
influences too. Those Originals were dip-
ping into their pool of knowledge gained
fromothers and summoning rappers from
their pasts as well. This boy is ableto imi-
tatehisidols, but furthermore, hewill draw
from all of these skills learnt from his
favourites and remix them into his own
creation. It wont be unique in the sense
that it came only fromhim, but it will be
thefirst timesomebody has remixedhisto-

Who would have thought that

Steve Charles, London native
and draftsman, saw an ad in the

Westartedexploringthatidea,
said Drewe. The more we
explored about the documentary
side of that, we found out this
whole world of stories that are
local andhistorically significant in
thetimesthat werehappening,
They found that fugitive slaves
from the States played a hand in
bringing the idea of multicultural-
ismtothecity andthecountry.
As we learned about the rich
history of London, I thought its
just anawesomestory that needed
to be told, said Charles. It just
shows insight and a little bit of
pridefor thecity.
So off they went, scouring the
city for stories. With some help
fromanarchivist fromtheCatholic

werewell ontheir way.
Inthecourseof that, wefound
eight or nine fantastic stories of
human accomplishment in the
London area, said Charles.
Were going to highlight four of
thebest storiesandthatswhat our

Onethat stoodout to themboth
was thestory of aboiler explosion
and a black man named Daniel
Sullivan.
Sullivanwasworkingasaboiler

On April 18, 1873, the boiler

Its real. It actually did hap-

that anonymous feel to it some-
times, andthisstory, theactionthat
he did, ended up making interna-
tional news. It wasinpapersinthe
U.K. andinNewYork.
It was a moment of almost

Drewe. Thatreallyhelpedtobuild
that sense of community that
showed even though this wasnt

Charles hopes the documentary
will show viewers the history of
how blacks and whites interacted
during a volatile time when it
cametorace.
[We were] a pretty trend-set-
ting society at the time, said
Charles. We should be proud of
what our ancestors did, which

For Drewe, this could be an
opportunity to squash Londons
feelingof anonymity.

The light refers to the idea of

founding of London as well, said
Drewe. Something perfectly mir-

Mostpeoplehavelikelyheardof
Human Resources, but many of
thosepeopleprobably cant really
explain what a human resources
department actually does. Katie
Cornelius is currently astudent in
Fanshawes Human Resource
Management post-graduatecertifi-
cate program. By the end of this
program, shewill beableto work
in a human resources department
inher preferredfield.
Cornelius explained that the
human resource department is so
muchmorethanjust peoplebehind
officedoorswhofireyou. Human
resources is the engine behind a
company, Cornelius said. When
it comes to theimplicationof per-
formance appraisals and the man-
ner to which they processed, or to
the training of a new program
within the company, the human
resource department takes care of
it. For themost part, thesearethe
typical duties that youd think of
when you think about your work-
places human resources depart-
ment.
But human resources is every-
where. They are not just there for
theupper management teamor the
people high up within the compa-
ny. The human resources depart-
mentistheretohelpeveryemploy-
ee in a company. That means if
you are in an entry-level position
or are the CEO, the human
resourcesdepartmentcanhelpyou.
Your human resources manager
knowsabout benefitsandcompen-
sationthroughout thecompany, as
well as the resources to provide
eachemployeewithadviceregard-
ing this, Cornelius explained.
This means that if youareinneed
of benefits or compensation for
whatever reason, you can go to
your department for soundadvice.
Therearesometimes moreseri-
ous issues that arise in a work-
place. For example, if youarefeel-
ingoverworkedor feel that youare
being treated poorly, the human
resources department is who you
cangotofor advice.
Issues that arise within your
place of employment, such as
harassment, violence or discrimi-
nation, arealso dealt withthrough
the human resources department,
Cornelius said. Thereareanum-
ber of laws in place that protect
employees against violence and
harassment in the workplace. If
this does take place, [the employ-
ee] mustfirstreporttheharassment
to their employer or their human
resources representative, and it is
now the responsibility of the
employer or representativeto take
action, whether it is legal or disci-
plinary.
The most commonly known
thing about human resources is
that the people working there are
theoneswhohireyou, fireyouand
pay you. Makeuseof this depart-
ment to help you with anything
you may bedealing with at work.
You dont haveto besubjected to
anything that you feel is inappro-
priatein theworkplace. Cornelius
said, Althoughwedotakecareof
the payroll, hiring and firing, the
job is much deeper and has many
different layers. Evenif youthink
that your concernis of lowimpor-
tance, there is absolutely no harm
in going to the department and
expressingyour concerns.

hard to squeeze marketing oppor-
tunitiesoutof everydollar spenton
promotion, with trends in recent
years placing an emphasis on live
events. Its sensible, if you think
about it as music sales drop and
less demand is placed on physical
albums, thechallengeof marketing
music has risento overshadowthe
music itself.
As an example: record labels
and artists participating in Record
Store Day the single biggest
vinyl saleday eachyear, observed
in countries around the globe
have to have provide all value-
added items like sampler CDs,
postcards and loot bag inserts to
organizers even before the very
vinyl albums theyrepreparingfor
the occasion. Organizers need a
greater leadtimeto coordinatethe
free items than the vinyl releases
themselves.
It isnt enough to engagelisten-
ers on social media anymore, so
thechallengebecomestofindnew
ways of making original content
compellingfor listeners. Andwhen
that compelling original content
comes along, themeans by which
its broadcasted can make all the
difference as to whether we pay
attentiontoit or not.

course of a few recordings, their
blendof abstract progrhythmsand

somewhere between indie pop,
alternative rock and progressive
jazz.
The band recently performed at

Flying Colours, released only a

Minneapolis on their way out to

PXTK clearly demonstrates that
WeAreTheCity is strongest per-

lining gig at the Kelowna

theEP featuresselectionsfromthe
groups second album Violent,
itself released only this J une. In
contrast to the recent full-length

To go through a cycle takes
about 90 minutes, so if you havea

Its that time of year again:
were all finding ourselves over-
whelmedwithlast-minuteprojects
and studying for finals that are
right aroundthecorner.
School alone is more than
enough to deal with, and many
people find it hard to keep their
homes in top shape during busy
times, but having a neat and tidy
living space will make your life
lessstressful duringbusy times!
When busy with school finals,
most of ushavethat Ill doit later
attitude when it comes to our
homes. Insteadof doingit later, do
it now. Ivelivedwithseveral peo-
ple throughout my school career
and have noticed a trend: around
the end of every semester our
homegot alittlemessy. Wewere
all busy with school projects and
studyingfor finalsandinsistedthat
it was more important to being
doingschoolwork thantidyingup.
It just led to more stress and less
motivation to clean such a big
mess. Tidying up for at least 30
minutes every day will save you
froma two-hour cleanup another
day. A quicktidyupeverydaywill
you a break from doing school-
workandgiveyouaquicksenseof
accomplishment!
Heres a list of a few simple
things to do in your 30-minute
cleanup.
Tidy up the floor. Whether
clothes, shoes, books and school-
work arecoveringyour floor, tidy
it up! Wheneverythingisput back
intoplace, youwill beabletofind
your belongings quicker and not
have to worry about stepping on
anything important. It is amazing
how fast your floor can disappear
andstressyouout more.
Do the dishes. At the end of
every day, you may only have a
small amount of dirty dishes, but
that small amount canvery quick-
ly turnintoevery dishbeingdirty.
If you take the time to clean the
very few dishes you have every
night, then you will never haveto
stressabout not havingaplateand
forktousewhenyoustarvingafter
a study session. A mountain of
dirty dishes is another stressor to
avoidduringstressful times!
Keep your work area tidy.
After alongday of studying, itsa
great feeling to pack up all your
books and papers nicely until the
next day. Having aclean and tidy
workspace will allow you find all
of the notes you need without
stressing, Where did they go, I
cant findthem?!
Examtime is a stressor for all
students; eliminateother factors at
home that could stress you out
more during this crunch time. It
really is as simpleas a 30-minute
tidyupeveryday. Remember, hav-
ing your homeclean and tidy will
make you life less stressful in
stressful times!

November 15 was abanner day
for the video game industry.
Sonys PlayStation 4was released
tothepublic, andover theweekend
more than a million people sat
downtoenjoythedawnof thenext
generation of video games, an
event that only happens once in a
decade. Retailers across North
Americaaresoldout of everycon-
sole, controller andextraaccessory
available, leaving thousands of
eager customersstill awaitingtheir
chance to get their hands on the
PS4scontroller.
Theearly hours of theconsoles
life had been haunted by Internet
rumours of broken HDMI ports
anddeadconsoles, aswell asgam-
ingnewswebsitesIGNandKotaku
both receiving faulty PlayStation

solestoreview. Sony wasquick to
respondtothegrowinghysteriaon
websitessuchasReddit and4chan,
with Sony Computer
Entertainments worldwide presi-
dent Shuhei Yoshida taking to
Twitter to assurethat theproblem
wasnot widespread.
Luckilyfor me, I wasabletoget
a chance to sit down and try out
Sonys new console and was able
to formulate some early opinions
onwhether video games will truly
bebigger, better-looking, andmore
revolutionary thanever before.
There is always a worry that
after lookingforwardtosomething
and expecting it to be amazing,
something about it will let you
down. I amhappytosaythatall the
hypesurroundingthenewconsole
is well warranted. ThePlayStation
4 is a truly fantastic machine and
points to an exciting future for
gaming.
From the moment I sat down
withafriend, bootedupthat shiny,
angular box andtook aholdof the
(fantastically comfortable) newly
designed controller, I felt a little
flicker of the childlike excitement
that usedtoforcemeout of bedat
3 a.m. on Christmas Day with the
feelingthat Idjust drank six cups
of coffee. The screen booted up
and we immediately jumped into
Sonys big launch title Killzone:
Shadow Fall, afirst-personshooter
that represents the first title that
wasmadetotakefull advantageof
thepower inthenewconsole. The
first thing that truly impressed me
wasthespeedwithwhichthegame
loaded, with the time elapsed
between pressing Start and the
game booting up clocking in
around the five-second mark, as
opposed to the 45 to 60 seconds
that could be expected on the
PlayStation3.
Once the game began, we were
treated to a visual feast that the
numerous Internet screenshots and
YouTubetrailers dont even come
closetodoingjustice. Thegameis
set in a massive city, all shiny
metal and futuristic glory, and the
game directors clearly took joy in
using massive, sweeping shots to
show off the beautiful environ-
ments that they have created.
Someone passing the television
watching an afternoon sun reflect
off the virtual skyscrapers could
easily mistake this for a high-end
CGI film.
While Killzone has been adver-
tisedasthetitlethat best showsoff
the technical abilities of the PS4,
the most technically impressive
titleinthelaunchlineupisperhaps
Resogun, a free-to-play space
shooter in the tradition of Space
Invaders where each level victory
endsinamassiveexplosionof mil-
lions of individually animated
cubes and ashower of colour that
is one of the most satisfying pay-
offs I havereceivedinmany years
of gaming.
The life of the PlayStation 4 is
still young, and it will be facing
massive competition from
Microsofts Xbox One which hit
shelves on November 22, but the
early experience I had with the
console indicates that Sonys new
blackboxiswell placedtoimpress
peoplefor yearstocome.
Now, if youll excuseme, I have

Resogun is a beautiful space shooter game on the PlayStation 4.
In a universe with unlimited
possibilities and a horrifying
amount of awful games, there are
always a few titles whose awe-
someness comes fromthat awful-
ness. Here are a few more games
that didnt makelast weekscut.
Hong Kong 97 (Super
Famicom, 1995)
Who knew that displays of
extreme xenophobia could be
absolutely hilarious if portrayed
poorlyenough?HappySoftsHong
Kong 97 stands as atestament to
that idea. Yet another kuso-ge
(J apanesefor shitty game) inits
home country, this bootleg Super
Nintendotitlereleasedin1995fea-
tured an absurd plot involving the
killingof Chinasentirepopulation
by Bruce Lees fictional brother
Chin during the future reunifica-
tion of Hong Kong and the main-
land. The games audio is non-
existent. There are no sound
effects, and the music solely con-
sists of the first few notes of a
Chinesechildrens songplayedon
a continuous loop. It really has to
beseentobebelieved.
Various Full Motion Video
games (PC, 1990s)
The CD-ROM gaming craze
defined the industry in the early
90sfor alotof reasons goodand
bad. Whilethepushtowards mak-
ing atechnology that was capable
of better storage for more expan-
sive games more widespread is
certainly admirable, instead, the
floodgates were opened for some
absolutely terrible video games
that tried to takeadvantageof the
CDs capabilities in the worst
ways. A staple of early CD-ROM
games were FMV (full-motion
video) games; titles that promised
a melding of movie-like experi-
ences with the interactivity of
gaming. What weinstead got was
loose gameplay that served as an
excuse to tie together extremely
cheesy and hilarious live-action
cutscenes. An exemplar would be
the SEGA-CD launch title Sewer
Shark. This otherwise mediocre
lightgun action is made worth
chugging through for the Aliens-
esquecharacters, your copilot try-
ing his absolute best/worst Bill
Paxton on you. Theres amassive
library of FMV games, most for-
gotten for the right reasons, but
neverthelessentertainingfor all the
wrongones.
Various Simulator games (PC,
mid-2000s to present)
Their boxart appearance seem-
ingly mirrors the aesthetics of
Microsofts various Flight
Simulator titles. And yet, these
various inane simulator games
made by various European devel-
opers, achieve zero quality and
everything poorly. Probably the
most notorious of the rip-off sim
games areFarming Simulator and
Street Cleaner Simulator. Before
you ask exactly who in their right
mind would ever want to experi-
ence such mundane mundanities,
no, these games fail to bring any
actual realismtothetable. Instead,
their extreme brokenness and cre-
ative interpretation of vehicular
physics and logic make for some
unintentionally hilarious game-
play.
An odd choice: Deus Ex (PC,
2000)
For the love of god, DONT
CRUICFY ME J UST YET. I am
NOT inanywayimplyingthat this
classicPCgame, consideredoneof
thegreatest FPS/RPGhybridsever

played and loved it, but its unde-
niable that after your first clean
playthrough, the game is fun to
revisit for the purpose of exploit-
ing glitches. Although with the
games ambitious and expansive
nature, afewbugsaretobeexpect-

Wait, what???!
There have been countless
depictions of Santa Claus in film
over the years. Id reckon there
have been more Santa films than
Saw and Paranormal Activity
installments combined. Everyone
from Tim Allen to Whoopi
Goldberg has had the opportunity
to don the red suit. But there has
never been a Santa quite like the
oneshowninthefilmI will betak-
ing a look at this week, appropri-
ately titledSanta Claus.
Santa Claus is a Mexican film
released way back in 1959.
Perhapsduetothefact that it isnot
a Hollywood production, certain
Christmas film conventions are
thrownby thewayside. For exam-
ple, Santa is usually a resident of
the North Pole. Well, not in this
film. Here Santa lives in space.
J ust whenyouthought hecouldnt
get any moremagical, hegets the
E.T. treatment.
Elves are usually a staple in
Santastories, butarenowheretobe
foundinthismovie. Instead, Santa
is shacking up with Merlin The
Magicianandchildrenfromnearly
every nation on Earth. We learn
thisintheopeningmomentsof the
film, as each group of children is
introduced, whileSantaenthusias-
tically plays asong nativeto their
country on his organ. Its like the
opening ceremony of the
Olympics, only longer. Also his
reindeers are not living breathing
animals, but are mechanical fac-
similes, operated by the turn of a
magic key.
Thefunandfrivolity ends when
Santa learns of a plot by Satan to
turnchildrenfromnicetonaughty.
Satanhassent hisassistant Pitchto
Earth to tempt children to commit
actsthat will result inthemgetting
nothingbut alumpof coal intheir
stocking. Luckily most of thechil-
dren take the high road, perhaps
because they believe Santa is
watching. And they are correct in
that assumption. Santahas alarge
mechanical eyethat heuses tospy
on all of the Earths children.
Thanks to his buddy Merlin The
Magician, he also is able to

serious reservations about taking
my children to get their picture
takenwiththisguy at themall ina

Onechildinparticular stoodout
tomeinthefilm: alittlegirl named
Lupita, despite being quite poor,
refuses to give in to Satan, even
thoughshecouldlandthedoll she
covets so dearly by doing so.
Actually she wants two dolls, one
of which shesays shewill giveto
Baby J esus. Sadly, J esus is never
shown in the film, as Imsure he
wouldhavealsobeengivenacom-
plete character makeover. Perhaps
in this world, J esus is a two-foot
tall robot from the planet Xargot
whospeaksonly inhaikuform.
Tired of being foiled at every
turn by Santa, Pitch has one last
trickuphissleeve. Santamayhave
access to the worlds greatest
magician, moregadgetsthanJ ames
Bondandlegionsof loyal children,
but thats not going to help him
whenhecomes facetofacewitha
barking dog! Ive always referred
to canines as theDevils beasts, it
isnicetoseemyopinionseconded.
Will Christmas be ruined forever,
or does Santa have enough magic
in his sack to overcometheodds?
Ill leaveit to youto findout. The
whole film is available on
YouTube, just type Santa Claus
1959 and you will be able to
watchit inEnglishor Spanish.
Santa Claus is arguably
Mexicos greatest and least harm-
ful export. Sure, thecreativeteam
took some liberties with character
of Santa, but I feel it was time to
changethings up, and makeSanta
more modern. I mean, its 1959,
people the times, they are a-
changin. So open up your mind,
watch this film, and I guarantee
youwill haveaFeliz Navidad.
Dear Nat,
Recently my friend and I had a
HUGE (and I mean HUGE)
blowup over a guy. My friend and
I have known each other since
Grade 1, and we pretty much
ended the friendship over this
dude, who we only met at school
this year. The short version of it is,
we both crushed on him from afar,
and when he started making moves
on my friend, I told her Id back
off. But then he started coming on
to me too, and so my friend and I
ended up both getting together
with him (not at the same time!).
After we found out that hed made
moves on both of us, we had a mas-
sive fight about it. He ended up
choosing her, but I guess my ex-
friends having a hard time getting
over the fact that he was with me
too, because shes posting horrible
things about me on Facebook, but
since she never directly mentions
my name in any postings (though
they are clearly about me unless
she knows a lot of straw-haired
skags), I feel like theres nothing
I can do about it. Can you help?
Double Snubbed
Dear DoubleSnubbed,
You might be feeling double
snubbed, but this guy sounds like
double trouble! Coming onto you
and your best friendwhenhemost
likely knows how close you two
arewasahugemistakeonhispart,
so get your friend to realize that.
Instead of lashing out at each
other, you two should assemble
andforget hissorry ass.
If you cant seem to get your
friend to talk to you in person, be
the bigger person here and reach
out to her over the computer or
text. Let her knowhowstupidyou
think it isthat after all theseyears,
your friendshipis beingtornapart
over aguy that youjust met afew
months ago. Yes, you hooked up
with him, but how were you sup-
posed to know he was doing the
sametoher too?!
If youvemadeattemptstoreach
out to her andyoustill arent suc-
cessful, just let it be. Dont involve
yourself in his business or hers;
simplylet everyonecool downand
get over it. Thisisnt thefirst time
in the history of hook-ups and
friendships that two besties
crushed on the same person, and
trust me, it wont bethelast! The
whole reason why you two get
along so well is probably because
you both share common interests,
only this time, the interest was
over apersonandnotacutepair of
shoes.
Duringthistimeapart fromyour
friend, it might be a good idea to
re-evaluate your friendship with
this girl: does it feel very one-
sided? Is it usually her gettingher
way or you getting yours? Does
she really have the right to be
pissed off, or is she simply blow-
ingthiswholesituationout of pro-
portion? Consideringall thesefac-
tors will allow you to better ana-
lyze how serious the situation is
andwhether it shouldbeyouapol-
ogizing, or her. Really weigh out
every angle before putting your
head on the chopping block it
could save you further problems
downtheroad.
Finally, dont stoop to her level
of postinghurtful statusesover any
social mediawaves. Beinganopen
vault of emotion (be it happy or
sad) online is pretty annoying. If
thisishowshedealswithher prob-
lems and feeling better about her-
self, then all to her, but dont feel
likeyouneedtofightfirewithfire.
Let her publicly get it out of her
systemif sheneedsto, but Idsug-
gest continuingtodeal withthison
amoreprivatelevel on your part.
If you two ever decide to make
amends and sort things out, shell
have a lot more explaining to do
(primarily because of those stat-
ues) thanyoudo.

J ob interviews are stressful to
everyone, no doubt about it. Ive
oftensaidthat if youarent at least
a little bit nervous about an inter-
view, then you should be nervous
about whyyouarent. Tohelpalle-
viate your nervousness before an
interview, you can research the
company, reviewthejobpostingor
job description if you have it, and
practice your answers to typical
interview questions. You can also
conduct your own mock interview
throughInterviewStream, anonline
video interview site check it out
at fanshawec.interviewstream.com.
One of the most frequently
asked questions, and most chal-
lenging for some to answer, is,
What are your strengths and
weaknesses? The two tend to go
handinhand, andrarelyisonepart
of the question asked without the
other. So, how would you answer
thequestion?
Thereisnobetter waytomakea
good first impression than to be
given a chance to state your
strengths. As mentioned earlier, it
is important to know what the
needed skills are to be successful
inthejobyouareinterviewingfor
so you can tailor your answers to
includethosestrengths.
The weakness part of the ques-
tion presents moreof achallenge.
But thegoodnewsisthat aninter-
view is not a confessional. After
all, youaretheretosell yourself to
theprospectiveemployer, not con-
fess to past sins or indiscretions.
Therefore, the best approach is to
answer theweaknessquestionhon-
estly, inawaythat makesyoulook
positive. Comeupwithasituation
or problemyou had at work, but
dont pick a scenario so serious
that it will disqualify youfromthe
competition. Briefly mention one
weakness andshowhowyouhave
learned from the experience or
what youhavedonetochange. Its
alsoagoodideatohaveaback up
answer in case you get asked to
provideanother example.
Avoidtheoverusedresponseof,
My problemis that Imaworka-
holic. I spendalot of timeat work
making sure I do my job right.
Im sure interviewers have heard
this response before and if the
question is really worth asking
they will probe for a further
response.
Most employers arelooking for
honesty out of this questionas the
responses are generally quite
insightful. They want to find out
what kind of person you are,
whether youareshy, timid, cocky,
arrogant, or evenaliar.
If youcan, besuretociteacor-
rected weakness or a lesson
learned from your weakness.
Always providespecific examples
of what youre doing to fix the
problem, the progress youve
made, and how these improve-
ments will help the employer. In
order to answer the strengths and
weaknessquestionwell, youreally
need to practiceprior to theinter-
view. At thesametime, makesure
your answer doesnt sound too
rehearsed, either.
Intheend, it isnt your mistakes
and weaknesses that matter the
most. It is whether or not you are
aware of your weaknesses and
understandthepotential impact on
others and that you are willing to
work to improve yourself. Your
ability tohandlethisquestioncon-
fidently andeffectively cansenda
powerful message to potential
employers about your real
strengths.

The entire history of English,
the worlds most prolific lan-
guage, certainly wouldbedaunt-
ing to narrate, but Bill Brysons
The Mother Tongue handles the
task deftly, while sporting a
charming sense of humour that
stops the fairly serious topic of
language evolution from being
too dry for theaveragereader.
Whether English is your first
language, your second or even
your fifth, youreally shouldread
this book. Its akin to taking
apart the car you drive; youll
find everything you ought to
know the inner workings all
dismantledright in front of you.
Believe it or not, the English
language has only recently been
considered worthy of true schol-
arly pursuit. English rose from
being the underdog of European
languages to the lingua franca
between all the worlds peoples.
Its surprisinghistory thewhys
and hows of Englishs accom-
plishments and idiosyncrasies
is chronicled concisely within
this book, fromthe now-incom-
prehensible works of Geoffrey
Chaucer to Shakespeares liberal
fabricationof wordswenowtake
for granted. The books incredi-
bly thorough history of the
English language is entertaining
and offers a lot of surprises.
Youll find out how rooted in
England (where many kings
first tonguewas French) thelan-
guageis, and how much English
adopts fromother languages.
The book isnt all academic
examination. One of the key
components that make English
so unique accent are given a
funinvestigation. Thestaggering
diversity of English accents, a
characteristic that insomeplaces
mean the difference between
economic classes, is as well
given the eye. If theres one
thing consistent about the lan-
guage, its that there is no con-
sistent pronunciation. The
inevitable cross-examination
betweenEnglishandhis (or her?
After all, gender pronounstiedto
inanimate objects have never
really been athing with this lan-
guage) closecousins, Gaelic and
Welsh, will make you thankful;
the convoluted manner of
Englishpronunciationisbad, but
not that bad.
When writing a book about a
language, the comparisons to
others are inevitable. Mother
Tongue shows just how perfect
(and at the same time, broken)
the English language can be for
conveyingideas. To speak alan-
guage is to convey the nuances
of a culture, and the blanket
adoption of English is not with-
out some modification to its
rules based on location.
Transpositions and outright
grammatical changes happen; a
sort of creole is born out of
English vocabulary and the
structure of the native tongue.
Its a true testament to the mal-
leability of thelanguage.
The Mother Tongue is linguis-
tic study laid out for the every-
man. Brysons style is, as
always, accessiblewithout being
dumbed down. The Mother
Tongue doesnt provethesuperi-
ority or inferiority of theEnglish
language; if anything, it shows
just howself-contradictory alan-
guagecanbethanks tonumerous
extenuatingcircumstances.

Lightnings Central
division looking strong
The London Lightning came
away with three wins during their
big three-game weekend this past
month; a 108-84 thumping of
Windsor, a 107 to 93 win over
Brampton and a127-102 shootout
against the Mississauga Power.
With that weekend, they had
playedall four teams(theother one
being the Ottawa SkyHawks) in
their division, theCentral.
Heres a little preview of each
team, and why they could give
London a run for its money this
year.
The Mississauga Power came
into Budweiser Gardens for
Londons home opener, and they
looked confident. They beat the
Lightning 99-97, putting their
rivals to a0-2 record. ThePower,
whorecentlymovedfromOshawa,
have two former London players
ontheir team. MorganLewiswent
first overall to the original Power
duringtheleagues inaugural draft
three years ago. He then went to
Londonandwonthechampionship
last season. Lewis has beenoneof
the best shooting guards in the
league during its existence.
Through their first four games, he
has been shooting above.500 and
averagingmorethan14points per
game (ppg). The latter will only
improve, as Lewis was called on
more during their second game
with the Lightning, after Nick
Okoriewent downinjured. All but
two of their seven returning play-
ers havebeen averaging above10
ppg. Their 2-4 record isnt fair,
with former Bolt Tyler Murray
alsoplayingwell.
The Windsor Express were
unlucky not to come away with a
win when they played London to
openthatthree-game-in-three-days
set. Star rebounder DeAndre
Thomas essentially started the
game with a technical after an
early incident. Thomas, also afor-
mer Bolt, givesWindsor abigsize
advantagedownlow.
Returnee Stefan Bonneau has
been leading the league in points
and assists, with league veteran
and perennial all-star Darren
Duncan behind him in the back-
court as point guard. This is a
guard-centric league; andWindsor
has what it takes to makenoisein
theplayoffsastheystartedthesea-
sonat 3-1.
TheBramptonAsareoneof the
twoexpansionteamsthataregoing
to be good this year. Starting the
seasonat 4-2(withonly twohome
games) theAshaveagoodcoreof
existing National Basketball
League of Canada talent. Cavell
J ohnson, and Cedric Moodie are
both averaging 16 ppg after com-
ing over from Saint J ohn and
Oshawarespectively. Thatsnot to
say they havent found some dia-
monds in the rough either, as
EvaldasZabasisaveraging17ppg.
A Canadian, Zabas is leading the
teamin scoring, all while playing
aspoint guard.
Finally, the Ottawa SkyHawks
seemto havebuilt their teamwith
only players from outside the
league. Big players like Ryan
Anderson (19ppg, two steals per
game) have been plucked from
higher leagues like the National
Basketball Association
Development League. Their head
coach, Kevin Keathley, has been
coachingsince1998inleagueslike
theD-League. Most of theteamis
comprised of players that used to
play for Keathley at one time or
another. Witha2-2record, oneof
the most anticipated teams in the
league will get on a run and will
look deadly.

The big, bad
Knight blueline
Remember that time when the
London Knights had one of the
youngest defences in the Ontario
Hockey League?
That was a long time ago
almost threemonths.
NowtheKnightshaveoneof the
OHLs toughest and oldest
defences, andlook ready tofinally
play the hockey they were sup-
posedto.
Nikita Zadorov is back to join
the Knights roster after spending
timewiththeBuffaloSabresinthe
National HockeyLeague. Oncethe
Sabres announcedthey weremak-
ing front office changes, their
youth movement was put on a
hiatus meaning Zadorov was
expectedtoreturntotheOHL.
Hehas, andtheKnightscouldnt
behappier.
You see some good organiza-
tions and how they go about it,
Sabres headcoachTedNolantold
Buffalo News. You dont force-
feed somebody and say were a
rebuild. Rebuild is important, but
how you rebuild is really impor-
tant.
[GM Pat LaFontaine] and I
havebeentalkingabout it sincewe
got involved. I think youcanhave
some young kids, a few of them,
but not asmany aswehave.
At 6 ft., 5 in. and 220 pounds,
Zadorovplayedsevengamesinthe

TheKnights hopehell become
their mammothshutdowndefence-
man like 2011/12 captain J arred
Tinordi.
Flashback tothe2013Memorial
Cup and the lack of that Tinordi-
type defenceman was one of the
reasonswhyLondoncouldntkeep
up with the Halifax Mooseheads
andthePortlandWinterhawks.
But Zadorov isnt theonly addi-
tiontotheKnights blueline.
Knights general manager Mark
Hunter sent 18-year-old defence-
man Miles Liberati to the North
Bay Battalion in exchange for
over-ager Zach Bells rights. Bell
is currently in California, playing
for the Ontario Reign of the
ECHL.
Liberati has four points in 22
games with London and was a+5
thisyear.
According to Yahoo Sports
Neate Sager, Zach Bell inked a
deal withtheSt. J ohnsIceCapsin
theAmericanHockeyLeagueafter
servingnoticethat hepreferredto
playfor acontender inhisoverage
season rather than join the
Battalion.
NowthatLondonownshisOHL
rights, that wishcouldcometrue.
At 6 ft., 2 in. and 228 pounds,
the Brampton native adds solid
sizeandexperiencetotheKnights
blueline. Through his short 14-
gamestintintheECHL sofar, hes
got apair of assistsand20penalty
minutes.
With the addition of Bell, the
London Knights have three over-
age defencemen Bell, Brady
AustinandAlex Basso.
TheKnights did haveover-ager
Paxton Leroux, but he was traded
to the Kitchener Rangers on the
morningof November 20.
The only downside to the Bell
trade is giving up a defenceman
likeLiberati, whowouldbereturn-
ing for next season. Then again,
the Hunter brothers want another
Memorial Cup this season, and
bearing that in mind, this was the
right movetomake.
Along with the three over-age
defencemen, factor in Zadorov,
Dakota Mermis and new addition
TimBender, the Knights look set
tofinally havethedefensivecorps
they craved at least onpaper.

The mission for the IS-series
from Lexus was from the begin-
ning to give the brand a youthful,
enthusiasticimage after all, upto
this point this luxury J apanese
brandhadaboringimage.
The very first IS-series arrived
in the year 2000 and became an
instant star. The car had a sleek,
taut design, the interior was well
equipped and sporty at the same
time, anditsrear-wheel drivechas-
siswassensational. Theoriginal IS
was thefirst J apanesecar to put a
scarein BMW, as enthusiast buy-
ers now had anew option to con-
sider when looking for a sporty
sedan. As youd expect, they sold
them by the boatload, except for
theIS Sportback (wagon) version.
Thesecond-generationISmodel
showed up for the 2006 model
year. The car had grown slightly,
but retainedthecharacteristicsthat
car enthusiasts want. This time,
Lexus offered two engine options
with the IS in Canada, and also
madeall-wheel driveoptional.
Lexusalsoofferedthismodel in
aconvertibleguise, along with its
sedan sibling. J ust by the sheer
numbersI seerunningaround, Im
guessing the second-gen IS-series
hasdonevery well too.
Lexus must have been under
great pressure to come up with a
replacement that can replicate the
successof itsancestors havethey
beenabletoaccomplishthis?
Tofindout, I spent aweek with
twomodelsof thenewIS-series.
First up was the IS250 F Sport
AWD. This model has a 2.5-litre
V6 motor, has the optional all-
wheel drive system (base model
gets rear-wheel drive), and it has
the F Sport performance package,
that makes the car look and feel
sportier.
I wouldadviseanyonebuyinga
new IS to choose the F Sport,
because without this package, the
car looks very ordinary, perhaps
evenunfinished. TheF Sportpack-
agegives it theright bumpers and
makesthecar look fast.
Inreality, theIS250, withits204
hp, isnotveryfast, butboyohboy,
is it entertaining. This is awilling
enginethat just loves to rev. What
it lacksinpower it makesupfor in
character. It pullsneatly, buildsup
speedwell, andsoundsgoodwhile
doing it. The six-speed auto also
works quite well. It is not the
quickest shifting transmission on
theplanet, but it is entertaining to
use.
Themostimpressivefeaturewas
its all-wheel drive system. On a
rain-soaked highway, the car
gripped as if I was driving on a
summer day. Thestabilityandroad
holdingwassimply sensational.
I realized how bad the roads
werewhenI jumpedintotheIS350
F Sport withjust rear-wheel drive.
I dont want tosoundlikeImsug-
gesting that the rear-wheel drive
IS350isnot drivableinwet weath-
er, but havingjust experiencedthe
all-wheel drive version, I quickly
realized how much better the
AWD system enhances traction.
Asayear rounddriver, Idpickthe
AWD.
Fromadrivetrainpoint of view,
IdhavetheIS350, becauseits3.5-
litre V6 engine develops a much
more pleasing 306 hp, and since
this motor is mated to a quicker
shiftingeight-speedautomatic, this
car is even more entertaining to
drive.
This motor would please just
about anyone, andthecars excel-
lent steeringandchassismakesit a
true delight, especially when its
dry.
The two versions are quite dif-
ferent when it comes to fuel con-
sumption. The IS250 AWD aver-
aged 9.2 litres/100km, while the
IS350 RWD drank 2.0 litres more
over thesamedistance. Giventhat
the IS250 is cheaper to buy and
still very entertaining to drive, Id
buy that one.
Ineither case, youwill get acar
that has oneof thenicest interiors
in its segment. Thedesign is sim-
pleyetsophisticatedandelegant. It
certainly has been inspired by the
interior of the $400,000 Lexus
LFA supercar. Everythingis with-
in easy reach, everything works
very well, and it just makes you
feel good. TheonlygripeI hadwas
that it could make do with more
storagespaces, for instance, asun-
glassholder wouldhavebeennice,
but thisisjust minor niggling.
Thedrivingpositionisfantastic,
and best of all is its instrument
cluster, whichatthetouchof abut-
ton moves the main cluster to the
right, revealing other information
that you might require. Trust me,
this feature alone will convince
many tobuy thiscar.
As for the price, IS250 AWD
starts from$39,900, while a rear-
wheel drive IS350 is yours from
$44,500. For this kind of money,
trust me, thereishardly any sports
sedanthat isbetter.
Lexus offers the sports sedan you want

In 2009, the Fanshawe mens
cross-country teamwon its third
provincial title in a five-year
span. An impressive accomplish-
ment, however, this would only
bethefirst of fivestraight provin-
cial titles, somethingthat noother
Ontario College has ever done.
The team has also dominated at
the national level, winning this
year marked their third champi-
onshipinthepast four seasons.
I feel the guys who were at
Fanshawe previous years kind of
paved the way for us, said
fourth-year runner Daniel Bright.
Bright and teammateClint Smith
werepart of astrong2010recruit-
ing class that had no idea what
they wereabout to achieve.
Weall cameinas strangers to
the systemnot knowing what we
could become, said Smith.
Even at nationals in first year, I
didnt expect to win. I did not
even think about winning and we
won. Thatswhenit reallyclicked
and we knew we could do some-
thingspecial andbeapart of his-
tory.
Putting aside all the medals
frominvitational meets, over the
past four seasons Fanshawe has
produced nine first-team all-
Ontario runners, 10 second-team
all-Ontario runners, five
Canadian first-team all-stars and
three Canadian second-team all-
stars. All of this goes along with
Smiths two provincial silvers,
two provincial golds, onenation-
al bronze, and three national sil-
ver medals.
Other than all of the winning,
there are indeed reasons why
Fanshawe cross-country ranks
above everybody else. Were
friends before were runners,
were family before were cham-
pions, and its as simpleas that,
saidSmith.
Bright added, If youput your-
self within a family context,
youre willing to die for each
other. Youre willing to throw it
down and burn every ounce of
energy that youhave.
Leaving such a phenomenal
program is not an easy thing to
do, but Bright will be off to
Humber College next year to
complete a Child and Youth
Worker degree program that
Fanshawedoes not offer.
As for Smith, its still upinthe
air. Beforenationals, I was leav-
ing this program. After nationals,
I dont know anymore. In a way,
people say I built it, but in all
honesty, this programbuilt me.
Hecontinued, I havevisiteduni-
versities andGuelphreally jumps
out at me. Not becauseof thehis-
tory but because I love it there.
But Fanshaweis somethingthat I
know and whos to say I cannot
becomewhat I want tobecomeby
staying here. This might be the
perfect fit.

2013CCAANATIONAL CHAMPIONS!
Congrats to Clint Smith on his CCAA
Individual Silver Medal
As we loom ever closer to
2014, theyear of thenext World
Cup, thelist of 32teams to com-
pete has yet to be finalized, and
many of the Premier Leagues
best havejettedout toall corners
of the world so they can help
their country makethefinal nec-
essary steps to the biggest stage
in sport.
Dont get me wrong, interna-
tional football has the potential
to be some of the best football
that a fan can have the pleasure
of viewing, especially when
thereis aplaceat theWorldCup
on the line, the finest example
being David Beckhamscoring a
crucial long-range, last-minute
free kick against Greece to send
England to the2002 World Cup,
and 12-year-old meinto my first
true moment of sports joy. The
playoff matches for the final
spots at next years showpiece
has the potential to bring forth
dramatic moments of their own,
as someof theworlds best play-
ers still have not led their coun-
tries to glory.
On the flipside of the league
break that comes with World
Cup qualifying, however, comes
amind-bogglingevent that many
coaches, pundits, and myself
have a massive problem with:
international friendlies.
On the surface, a friendly is a
chance for managers to decide
who will be joining him on the
planetoBrazil next year, andfor
the supporters of each nation to
watch their heroes lock horns
with another countrys best.
Inreality, however, aninterna-
tional friendly is nothing more
than a pointless and risky exer-
cise in football arrogance, with
nothing tangible to gain and so
much to lose. Every internation-
al break I join the millions of
club supporters in holding our
breathandhopingthat oneof our
best players is not one of the
dozens who are injured in every
round of these glorified exhibi-
tion matches. Theproblemthat I
havewithinternational friendlies
can be perfectly summed up by
what transpired during the sec-
ond half of Germanys recent 1-
1 draw with Italy, and theinjury
that was suffered by midfielder
Sami Khedira.
Hospitalized following a tack-
le from Andrea Pirlo, scans
showed that Khedira suffered a
tear in his anterior cruciate liga-
ment, ruling himout for the rest
of the season, and even putting
himat risk of missing theWorld
Cup that his country has already
secured its spot at, all during a
match that literally means noth-
ing. Now a talented player has
sufferedaninjury that many past
players have never truly recov-
ered from and the club that he
represents and pays his wages
has been robbed of his services,
leaving them short of a crucial
first-teamplayer.
Rarely does an international
break go by without aclub man-
ager calling for the abolishment
of friendlies, feeling that the
potential risk to their players is
too great for too little reward,
and I cant help but agree every
timeI hear it.
Khediras injury is just thelat-
est example of the pointlessness
of these friendlies, in which
players play just as hard as they
would if the World Cup trophy
was on the line, and the reason
that I feel they areoneof thesil-
liest aspects of this sport we all
love.
The cost of friendlies is too high
