CATHOLIC CHURCH First Semester, 2010-2011 Mr.

Huber Description: This course presents an overview of the primary teachings of the Catholic Church. Special emphasis is placed on basic concepts necessary to understanding and appreciating the teachings and practices of the Church. Attention will be given to the liturgy, Scripture, and the creeds as sources of Catholic tradition. Goals: The course is intended to introduce ninth graders to religious concepts and terms appropriate to their stage of development and to prepare them to reflect and discuss these types of ideas as they continue their religious and spiritual formation at John Carroll. Objectives: 1. To introduce students to the basic concepts necessary to discuss and reflect on the roles that religion and spirituality have in their lives. 2. To use professions of faith and belief (creeds) as a means of reviewing the core concepts of Catholics and all Christians. 3. To discuss the sources of our belief and their development as presented in the Scriptures, the teachings of the Church, and the lived experience of Gods followers. 4. To familiarize students with the concepts of prayer and liturgical expression as they have developed over time and how these practices are intended to reflect the spirituality of the community. Materials Needed for Class: Textbook: The Catholic Faith Handbook for Youth by Brian Singer-Towns Laptop Pen (blue or black ink) or pencil Notebook with removable pages Grading: Grades will be weighted in the following manner for each quarter: Tests: 40% Quizzes: 35% Class/Homework: 25% Make up of Tests and Quizzes: Must be made up within one week of returning to school. Failure to do so will result in a grade of zero. Homework: All assignments may either be typed in OneNote (Must be printed to be handed in) or written on loose-leaf paper. Homework turned in one day late will result in the deduction of points. After one day, it will receive a zero. Cheating: Cheating will not be tolerated! Disciplinary measures will depend on the nature of the infraction. Laptop Use: Any student who is caught using the computer in class for something other than the assigned task will receive a minor detention. Repeated offenses will result in a major detention. Absence: It you are absent for a class or for part of a class, it is your responsibility to contact me for missed work. Failure to do so will result in the deduction of points or a zero. You may get missed assignments by emailing me at dhuber@johncarroll.org. Please let me know it is you in the subject column! Lateness: If you are late to class you must have a pass signed by a faculty or administration member for the lateness to be excused. Otherwise, you will receive a minor detention.
