Pin the #ame on the lantern

Night of Light
By Danielle Cochrane

On Thursday 31 October 2013, the Newman Bapst Church hosted a Night of Light. This was for the children of Newman and involved cra!s, games, food and a lantern walk. This was a great alternave for families who did not wish to celebrate Halloween. I, for one, just thought Halloween was an American tradion that was slowly gaining momentum in Australia and was just commercialism. However, on doing a li"le research, have discovered that Halloween is a celebraon of evil. It is a religious day but it is not Chrisan. So I was quite pleased there was an alternave acvity for kids in town who did not want to parcipate in Halloween. The Night of Light was bright and posive and, with close to 50 children parcipang, was a well a"ended and

acon packed evening. The children decorated their own lanterns and then they were lit with ny li"le torch lights inside. The kids then did a walk with their lanterns up the hill behind the Bapst Church. They also made cards and pictures, played games like sck the #ame on the lantern (an alternave to pin the tail on the donkey). Dinner was served (bonus$), some yummy pizza and fresh fruit. It was a great family night, enjoyed by all those who a"ended. Thank you to the Bapst Church for pu%ng on a fantasc evening and also thank you to members of the Anglican Church who helped on the evening.

where does Trick or Treang come The Bible and Halloween So into it? To obtain these sacri#ces, Druid For those who are interested, I thought I would share some insight into the meaning of Halloween. The informaon was sourced from Africa Chrisan Acon in South Africa. Halloween has strong roots in paganism and witchcra". It began as the Druid fesval of Samhain. The Celts considered November 1st the day of death because, in the Northern hemisphere, this was the beginning of winter. They believed that their sun god was losing strength and Samahin, the lord of death was overpowering it. The Druids also thought that on 31 October, on the eve of the feast, Samhain assembled the spirits of all who had died during the previous year to return to their former home to visit the living. On Halloween for thousands of years Druid priests have conducted diabolical worship ceremonies of human and animal sacri#ces meant to appease Samhain and keep the spirits from harming them. priests would go from house to house asking for fa$ed calves, black sheep and human beings. Those who gave were promised prosperity, and those who refused to give were threatened and cursed. This is the origin of trick or treat. Now the Jack-O-Lantern has its origin in the candle-lit pumpkin or skull, which served as a signal to mark those farms and homes that supported the Druids religion and thus were seeking the treat when the terror of Halloween began. So not wanng to sound like a Grinch, there is a modernisaon of Halloween these days% On a lighter side, Halloween has become another very important day in the commercial promoons calendar. Organised entertainment around the Halloween theme for people of all ages seems to be going from strength to strength. Halloween theme costume pares have gained in popularity and will no doubt keep the Halloween tradions alive for many years to come.

Reports include signicant damage to Miners Hope Park in East Newman where panels reinforced by steel were deliberately kicked down. Other recent damage includes the destrucon of dozens of newly planted trees around the town. The damage at Miners Hope would have required quite considerable force by the perpetrators and addionally created a signicant amount of noise which most likely would have been heard by nearby residents, said Shire of East Pilbara Chief Execuve O"cer Allen Cooper.

Common clinical signs of parvovirus include inial redness and reluctance to play, which then can progress quickly to voming and very foul smelling diarrhoea.
