Going and Growing
School is in full swing for the students and faculty at Leahurst
College. September was a whirlwind as we held classes in our
beautiful school space for the first time. From the first day of
school, students and faculty have been working together to build
our knowledge and develop our community. Classes are on pace,
students are learning, and every Friday a new and interesting
experience awaits. Our Enrichment Activities (pg 5) continue to
amaze and inspire students and staff alike and will always be an
important part of our school experience.
We are also very excited to announce that we will be offering
Grades 7 & 8 for the 2014-2015 academic year. The Leahurst
Junior College Program (Grades 7, 8, & 9) will offer an
outstanding introduction to the academic expectations of high
school and university. Grade 7-8 students will share the school
space with their upper year classmates, become valued members
of Leahurst Houses, and participate in the same weekly
enrichment activities for which the school is becoming so well-
known.
At Leahurst College, we truly believe that this is the beginning of something
special in Kingston. Leahurst College provides students with a one-of-a-kind
opportunity to learn in various unique and progressive ways. The learning
experience is centered around students, with an emphasis placed equally on
academics, athletics, culture, and technology.

Big News!
1
Leahurst College will offer Grades 7-10 for the 2014-15 academic year, expanding to Grades 7-12 by
2016-2017.
The Leahurst Junior College (Grades 7, 8, &9) will offer an accelerated program whereby students will
earn two Grade 10 credits by the end of their Grade 9 year. Leahurst Math Methods will ensure that all
students develop a profound understanding of the fundamentals of mathematics, ensuring that their
progress into the senior grades is based on a solid foundation and excellent skills. In addition to
acceleration, the Junior College students will benefit from the many wonderful field trips for which
Leahurst is becoming so well-known.
Leahurst Senior College students (Grades 10, 11, & 12) will benefit greatly from the accelerated
programming, as they will have the opportunity to take more electives, prepare for SAT and AP exams,
and write university admissions letters and applications with support from the faculty at Leahurst.
With such an amazing amount of support pouring in from all over
Kingston we have decided to offer Grade 7 & 8 in the coming year!

This program will enable our science students to fit all three Senior
Science courses into their timetable without any difficulty, and their
mathematics skills will be a year ahead of traditional programming.
All students will occupy the same beautiful space and our outstanding faculty will teach across all grades.
Students who are interested in pursuing bilingual certification (English and French) will benefit from our
DELF exam preparation program. The DELF (diplme dtudes en langure franaise) exam is quickly
becoming the new standard in French language education and Leahurst will ensure that students
interested in bilingual certification will have the opportunity to include the DELF Diploma among their
many accomplishments.

Our students are
amazing!
As part of our photography unit students have had the
opportunity to hone their photography skills and
develop their eye for composition. Our photography
excursions have allowed students to explore the
landscape around the school as well as visit RMC and
Rob Sangers Farm on Unity Road. These experiences,
coupled with digital editing lessons, have lead to the
amazing pictures that you see on this page. These
photos and many more can be found on our Facebook
page at facebook.com/leahurstcollege.
While managing a full course load our
students are creating some impressive
pieces of work.

Every Friday afternoon,
students are given the
opportunity to experience
life outside the
classroom. During this
dedicated two-hour block
students meet
researchers, host guest
lecturers, and take part in
amazing field trips.
Leahurst teachers work
closely with Queens
University and other
local groups to offer
some of the most
amazing experiences on a
weekly basis.
Thus far we have: visited
Queens Mechanical
Engineering Department
and Queens Computing
Department; cleaned up
Big Sandy Bay on Wolfe
Island; enjoyed an
2
afternoon of sailing on
sharks thanks to sailors
at the KYC; gone sailing
on the Brigantine;
attended Kingston
Writers Fest; supported
Hospice ChiliFest; visited
the Perimeter institute in
Waterloo; begun a
production for the Sears
Drama Festival with
local director/producer
Len Whalen; had
character development
workshops from Queens
Faculty of Educations
Aynne Johnston; and
enjoyed a three-day
camping experience at
Camp Oconto.
We are truly lucky to
offer such amazing
experiences to our
students and staff.
31
Leahurst College staff and
students made nearly 25
gallons (yes, gallons) of Chili in
support of Hospice ChiliFest. In
total the event raised $45,000
for Hospice Kingston.

In late September, Ms Hills
lead students on a walking
tour called In Sir John As
Footsteps. The enrichment
activity fit in nicely with the
beginning of our Canadian
History course as students
learn about the building of
Confederation.

3
Enrichment Activities
In our first week we visited the
Queens Mechanical Engineering
Department.
In week two we spent three days at
Camp Oconto working on
leadership and outdoor skills.
Two weeks later we visited the
Perimeter Institute in Waterloo,
offering students the opportunity to
learn and interact with some of the
most cutting edge pieces of
technology, including Mind
Control.
Faculty of Education Professor,
Aynne Johnston came to our school
to deliver a character creation
workshop.

Unfortunately, full
tuition fees are not
always affordable for the
families of many
deserving students.
Individual contributions,
no matter the size, can
make a substantial
difference in helping us
deliver the best schooling
experience possible to an
engaged and diverse
student population. Gifts
to the school will
enhance the lives of both
students and staff and
will be put towards: The
Scholarships and
Bursaries Fund,
computers, athletics,
interactive technologies,
and much more. In these
first few years sponsors
have the unique
opportunity to make a
direct impact on the lives
of Leahurst students.
2
Specific donation levels
provide sponsors with the
opportunities to name
workspaces, classrooms,
and even the Leahurst
Houses themselves. You
have the opportunity to
be a part of the school for
generations to come. As
an independent school,
Leahurst College is a not-
for-profit organization
and our Scholarship and
Bursary Fund will soon
be a recognized charity
with Revenue Canada.
The easiest way to make
a donation to Leahurst
College is through the
secure online donation
form outlined below.
To discuss naming
opportunities please contact
