The 34th Sunday in Ordinary Time (C)

St. Monicas Parish

November 23/24, 2013

Solemnity of Christ the King

On this last Sunday of Ordinary Time, the Church celebrates the kingship of Christ. But what kind of king is Jesus? He a king crowned not with gold but thorns. His throne is not of marble encrusted with precious stones, but the old rugged cross. His kingship is not of this world. Yet from the Cross, Jesus reigns triumphant. Hanging on the instrument of his own torture and death, he still holds the keys of eternal life. To the repentant thief who implores, Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom! he responds: Today you will be with me in paradise. As followers of Jesus, we have received the task of spreading the Good News embodied by Christ to all humanity. We received this commission through the anointing of our baptism: God the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ has freed you from sin, given you a new birth by water and the Holy Spirit, and welcomed you into his holy people. He now anoints you with the chrism of salvation. As Christ was anointed Priest, Prophet, and King, so may you live always as a member of his Body, sharing everlasting life. In our confirmation, we renewed that commitment: sealed with the Holy Spirit, we were empowered with spiritual gifts for our mission in the Church and in the world. To be christened is to become like Christ: called according to Gods purpose, anointed for a unique mission. It is a great privilege. And no less, a great responsibility. Jesus shows us the way; our leadership must mirror his model. Concretely, what does this imply? That as Jesus bore witness to peace, integrity, forgiveness, justice and freedom even unto death so must we in our dealings with the world and with one another. It is tempting to put Jesus up on a glorious throne and worship him from afar. Its a lot harder to face Jesus as a King hanging from a Cross and hear him say, where I have gone, you too must follow. But there is no other way. Jesus kingship reveals to us that the path to glory necessarily passes through suffering, that there is no Resurrection without the Passion. Jesus models for us a new form of leadership: not one of domination and control, but humble and life-giving service. How is Jesus inviting YOU to embrace your baptismal identity: your priestly, prophetic, and royal vocation? Something to ponder this week!

"GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF PARISHIONERS

On Sunday, December 8, 2013, after the 11:00 a.m. Mass, there will be a general meeting of all parishioners for the purpose of electing tow new churchwardens for a three-year term. Special thanks to Angela Onesi and George Wong, who are completing their mandates. Together with the pastor, the wardens form the Fabrique of St. Monicas Parish: as such, the serve as stewards of the churchs temporal and financial needs. It is important that we can call on wise and generous parishioners to assume this essential function. If you live within the church boundaries (east side of Walkley to west side of Beaconsfield; from St. Jacques to south side of Cote St. Luc Rd.), please pray about allowing your name to stand for election. You may speak to Fr. Raymond or any of the current wardens for more information.
