Overview

Ethernet Interface Unit (EIU)

P/N 950-0860

Overview
The EIU is an Acom card that provides Ethernet connectivity for Acom backroom equipment such as the Acom DS3 Subrack (ADS) and Acom Line Subrack (ALS). The EIU is primarily used for two purposes: to connect with Acom EVO Consoles over an IP network, and to connect with Zetron Intelligent Radio Interface Modules (iRIMs). The two Ethernet ports on the EIU support network redundancy provided they are connected to a redundant network configuration. The EIU card has LEDs that provide visible indication of network activity and redundancy status. Configuration and adjustments are performed via the Integrated Management System (IMS). The EIU card has the following features: Compatible with network redundancy Local and remote debugging access HTTP access to statistics Hot plugging capability Failsafe firmware

Overview

EIU for Acom EVO Consoles

The EIU, when installed in an Acom DS3 Subrack (ADS), provides access for Acom EVO Consoles over an Ethernet LAN. Each EIU supports up to two groups of consoles. Each console group supports: Up to 10 consoles, depending on configuration. A maximum of 30 console interface channels between all consoles. A maximum of 256 digital audio connections between all consoles (monitoring a radio takes one connection, a monitored or selected line with parallel activity may take two connections). A shared IGMP multicast address to minimize console messaging in the group. Redundant Ethernet connections to the LAN. Consoles with redundant IP connections to the multiple EIU.

The EIU card, when used with Acom EVO Consoles, has the following features: Interleaved audio multiplexing into RTP streams to/from the IP console. Select and Monitor channels form a single RTP stream to the console. RTCP statistics for the RTP streams. PCM to RTP conversion with clock rate adjustment. G711 audio codec for clear voice. Dynamic jitter buffer to minimize latency and packet-loss. IP console connectivity and data messaging using UDP and IMGP. 802.1P Differentiated Services QoS tagging of traffic. May be installed in ADS slot 2-4. Up to 3 EIU cards may be installed in an ADS shelf.

EIU for Intelligent Radio Interface Modules

The EIU, when installed in an Acom Line Subrack (ALS), connects to Zetron Intelligent Radio Interface Modules (iRIMs) over a LAN. Each EIU supports up to 30 full duplex radio channels. The EIU provides the data interface to 30 iRIM channels, while the Acom Radio Interface Unit (RIU) card provides the analog voice interface to the iRIMs. 1 EIU and 5 RIU cards will support 30 iRIM channels (15 iRIMs). The EIU provides data connectivity to Tetra iRIMs. The EIU card, when used with iRIMs, adds the following features:

Description of Major Functional Blocks

The following describes the major functional blocks illustrated in the above diagram.
Block Microprocessor System Description The microprocessor system combines a CPU with internal HDLC communications controller, memory, watchdog timer and reset circuitry to provide overall management of the EIU resources. The microprocessor system controls the PCM signal paths located in the FPGA and any option boards that are plugged into the expansion interface. It handles communications to the Ethernet ports via Fast Ethernet Controllers and the FPGA. The Ethernet controllers for the Primary and Standby interfaces are coupled directly to programmable logic (CPLD) for filtering off unwanted received multicast packets. Unicast and broadcast addresses are unaffected. IEEE 802.3 (10Base-T/100Base-T) ports for the Primary and Standby interfaces to the communications network, and for the redundant link between the EIU cards. Within the FPGA, transmit and receive audio is fed into CODECs handling the conversion between VoIP and PCM audio as well as -law to G.711 A-law conversions. The PCM digital audio, as well as the various digital input and output signals for all channels, are conditioned by the FPGA to interface to the correct backplane PCM bus and timeslot for each channel. An HDLC controller located inside the microprocessor is used to communicate with master controller card located in slot 0 of the subrack. The USB port allows for card debugging, event monitoring, and firmware upgrades. These LEDs show alarm, network and redundancy status conditions. This interface allows for adding hardware codecs and signal processing for future options.

Connector Detail
Primary Ethernet (J1) This provides the primary Ethernet connection to an Acom EVO console or Zetron iRIM by way of a LAN. Each RJ45 Ethernet interface operates at 10/100Mbps autosense for LAN connectivity. The Ethernet interfaces host a HTTP server for web statistics, an FTP server for firmware updates, and a Telnet server for diagnostics.
Note The Ethernet interfaces have no default IP address, the ports are disabled until configured in IMS.

15

Interfaces

Standby Ethernet (J2) This provides the standby Ethernet connection to an Acom EVO console or Zetron iRIM, assuming the LAN has a redundant network configuration. For the ALS EIU installation, all iRIM connections occur via the active J1/J2 port. A LAN fault will move the iRIM connections to the other interface. For the EVO Console installation, both console groups operate via the active J1/J2 port. Loop1 and Loop2 will operate from the same interface until a fault causes a changeover of both loops to the other interface. The J1 and J2 Ethernet ports share a common Floating IP address that allows them to seamlessly host incoming connections and communicate on whichever port is functional. The active port (indicated by LED) responds to messages while the inactive port does not. Debug/Redundancy Link (J3) When installed in an ADS, J3 provides telnet debug functionality only, it has no affect on redundancy. When installed in an ALS, J3 provides the redundancy link between primary and standby EIU cards. The redundant EIU card must be in a redundant Acom Line Subrack. The cable between J3 on each EIU card is a Ethernet crossover, swapping pins 1,2 for 3,6. Debug Port (J4) This port provides a USB interface between the EIU and a local maintenance terminal via a Type-B jack. The connected PC may use this interface to update firmware or issue diagnostic commands via a dumb-terminal such as HyperTerminal. The Debug Port presents itself to the PC as a serial COM port with the following settings: 460,800 baud, no parity, 8 data bits, 1 stop bit, no flow control. P1 BDM Debug port for factory use only. P2 Backplane Connector Standard backplane interface.
