Lead Screw Application Step #1

1. Establish Motion Objectives (most

Load weight = 1000 lb Important!):
Lead screw diameter = 1.0 inch • Maximum velocity = 0.15 ft/sec
Lead screw pitch = 5 thread per inch
• Acceleration time = 0.1 sec
Lead screw length = 48 inch
Slide friction force = 6 ounces (est.) • Operate at max velocity for 2 sec
• Deceleration time = 0.1 sec
• Immediately reverse operation
• Operate continuously

Step #1a Step #2a

1. a. Calculate Critical Move Parameters: 2. a. Calculate inertia of all moving

• Max. move speed ωmax? components

ω max =  0 .15   1inch  1 rev  = 56.5 sec
 sec  1 ft    • JC : shaft coupling - assume zero
• JS : lead screw shaft ???
• Max. accel rate α? • JL→M : compute from formula in notes

3. Calculate Acceleration Torque at motor 5. Calculate Total Torque reflected to

shaft due to reflected inertia (load & motor
mechanism only) • Peak torque for worst case move

4. Calculate all non-
non-inertial forces, torques
• RMS torque for entire move cycle
• Friction? Pre-
Pre- loads?
τ RMS = (55oz − in )2 (0.1sec) + (0. 2oz − in)2 (2.0 sec) + (− 54. 6oz − in)2 (0.1sec)
τ RMS = 16 . 5 oz − in = 1. 03 in − lb
