Pattern Notes & Skills: The Woobie blanket is knit in the round as one piece and is started by using a provisional crochet cast-on. This allows for an easy way to pick up the edging to nish the blanket hem border. The square shape is created by increasing at the four marked points. After the picot row, the directions will instruct you to decrease back down to original cast-on number. On the Picot Edge decrease rounds I like to place the markers on the left side of the center stitch. You will have to remove the marker in order to perform the centered double decrease and place it back when completed, but I think this keeps you well aware of when your decreases are coming. Continue decreasing until youre left with 16 stitches. These remaining stitches will divide evenly over 2 double pointed needles and the position of these stitches will also determine the direction the head is facing. If you need to move stitches around please do it at this time. The next step will have you sealing the gap between the stitches allowing you the ability to stuff the head later on with poly-ll. The stitches that were on the back needle will now need to be on the front needle and visa versa. The shaping of the head has short-rows that help the head lean forward instead of facing upward. To ll in the gaps created by short-rows, pull a stitch from below and knit with next stitch. Provisional crochet cast-on: Make a slip knot with waste yarn and place loop onto a crochet hook. Take needle and crochet hook and form an X with hook in front. Grab the working yarn and wrap behind the needle counter-clockwise catching it on the hook. Pull yarn through the slip knot creating another loop on the hook and one loop on the needle. Move yarn to the back. Repeat this until you have enough stitches on the needle to start knitting your project. p2

Head Shaping: Note: The formation of the head will have you sealing the gap between the stitches. This will allow you the ability to stuff the head later on with poly-ll. Arrange stitches evenly on two needles by placing the rst 8 on one needle and the remaining 8 are on a second needle. Hold needles parallel to each other. With a spare needle, pick 1 st off rst needle, then 1 st off second needle. Continue until all sts are on one needle. Transfer sts back to the two needles but reversed so that they cross, sealing the gap. The 1st st that came from the front needle is returned to the back needle and the 2nd st that came from the back needle is now on the front. Once all stitches have been transferred onto 2 needles, divide them evenly over 4 needles (4 sts per needle). Needles 1&2 will represent the face and Needles 3&4 are the back of the head. Rnd 1) Knit. Rnd 2) Kfb of each stitch. [32 sts] Rnd 3) Knit until 1 st on the end of needle 4, turn, sl1, purl across to 1 st at the end of needle 3, turn, sl1, knit to end of round. Tip: To remove the holes left by the short-row turns, pick up a leg from the stitch below and knit it with the next stitch on the needle. Rnd 4) * K1, kfb, rep from * to end of round. [48 sts] Rnd 5) Knit until 1 st on the end of needle 4, turn, sl1, purl across to 1 st at the end of needle 3, turn, sl1, knit to end of round. Rnd 6) * K2, kfb, rep from * to end of round. Finishing: Ears: Place wrong sides together and with the tails of the inner ear whip stitch along edge of outer ear. Pinch the base of the ear and using the tail of the outer ear, whipstitch it closed. Use this same tail to whipstitch onto top of head. Face: Use complementary embroidery oss and make satin stitch eyes and nose. Cut a 3 foot length and separate the plies so youre working with only two or three plies at a time. Be careful to keep an even tension. Pulling too hard or loosely can distort the shape. See diagram for sample face. Horns: Fill with poly-ll and whipstitch to top of head between the ears. Mane: This is also known as a Latch Hook technique. Using CC1, cut yarn into 6 in / 15 cm lengths. Take three pieces of yarn and fold in half. Find the center stitch that runs down the back of the Giraffes head and insert a crochet hook into the leg of the stitch and loop from the bottom up. Hook them with the crochet hook and pull them slightly through the loop. Take the ends of yarn and pull them through the loop drawing them down snugly. Continue adding this fringe until you have 3 rows centered between the horns on top of head. Trim the ends to even and shape the mane. Spots: Using the tail from cast on and bind off, backstitch the spots onto the body of the blanket. Weave in all ends.

On the dec rnds when you perform a cdd you will need to remove the marker, then place it back after the cdd. Rnd 14) Knit all even rounds. Rnds 15-21) * Knit to 2 sts before the marker, cdd, replace marker, rep from * to end of round. Repeat dec rnd 4 times. Remember to place markers to indicate these. Added Decrease Rounds: Rnd 1) * K15, cdd, pm, knit to 2 sts before next marker, cdd, rep from * to end of round. Rnd 2) Knit all even rounds. Cont to rep in this manner, decreasing at 8 points until you have 7 sts on each needle [28 sts total]. Next Rnd) K2, k2tog 12 times, k2 [16 sts]. Remove markers while working rnd. Needles 1&2 will represent the face and Needles 3&4 are the back of the head. p15

Finishing: Ears: Place wrong sides together and with the tails of the inner ear whip stitch along edge of outer ear. With the inner ear smaller it will cause the ear to curl. Use this same tail to whipstitch onto top of head. Face: Use complementary embroidery oss and make satin stitch eyes, nose and mouth. Cut a 3 foot length and separate the plies so youre working with only two or three plies at a time. Be careful to keep an even tension. Pulling too hard or loosely can distort the shape. See diagram for sample face. Spots: Using the tail from cast on and bind off, backstitch the spots onto the body of the blanket. Weave in all ends. p16

Be careful to keep an even tension. Pulling too hard or loosely can distort the shape. See diagram for sample face. Mane: This is also known as a Latch Hook technique. Using MC, cut yarn into 6 in / 15 cm lengths. Take three pieces of yarn and fold in half. Find the center stitch that runs down the back of the Zebras head and insert a crochet hook into the leg of the stitch and loop from the bottom up. Hook them with the crochet hook and pull them slightly through the loop. Take the ends of yarn and pull them through the loop drawing them down snugly. Continue adding this fringe until you have 3 rows centered between the ears running from top to back of head. Trim the ends to even and shape the mane. Weave in all ends.
