While its ratings may not
match that of Keeping up with
the Kardashians or Duck Dy-
nasty, Lenape District Televi-
sions venture into the world of
reality television continued with
the second season of We Teach.
We Teach features educators
from Seneca, Lenape, Cherokee
and Shawnee high schools. The
series follows teachers through-
out their day with a focus on what
it takes mentally, physically and
emotionally to engage and capti-
vate students in the classroom, on
stage or on the field and prepare
them for success beyond high
school.
The idea started when some-
one challenged former LRHSD
superintendent Emily Capella
that teachers dont actually work
all that hard, LDTV staff mem-
ber Becky Potter said. She want-
ed to show people just how much
work a teacher is responsible for
every day. In addition to teaching
the curriculum, teachers also

Lenape High Schools girls soc-
cer team won its seventh consecu-
tive South Jersey Group IV cham-
pionship last week, defeating
Eastern High School 2-0 at
home.
Lenape didnt score until just
under 17 minutes remaining in
regulation. Junior Kenie Wright
dribbled the ball up the sideline
and played it into the Eastern
box. With Eastern goalkeeper
Imani Taylor out of position,
Lenape junior Marissa Topolski
knocked the ball into the net, giv-
ing the Indians a 1-0 lead that they
would not relinquish.
I thought all we needed was
that first goal to get the energy we
needed, Topolski said.
Lenape added a second goal
with 1:59 left, as Wright scored on
a penalty kick to make it 2-0.
The Indians escaped the first
half with just a scoreless tie in
part thanks to goalkeeper Alicia
Hampton. With Eastern pushing
into Lenapes end late in the first
half, Hampton made three great
saves to keep the score 0-0.
After halftime, Lenape took
over, keeping possession of
the ball for most of the second
half.
We wanted to settle down a lit-
tle bit, Lenape head coach Kevin
Meder said. We wanted to let
them play defensively more in the
second half.
Hampton made five saves in
the game to earn the shutout. She
did not allow a goal through the
entire South Jersey Group IV
tournament.
In the semifinals, Lenape de-
feated Toms River North 2-0 to get
to the championship game.
The Indians received goals
from Alli Cox and Nicole Donnel-
ly in the first half to give them an
early advantage. Hampton kept
Toms River off the scoreboard in
the second half to keep Lenape
ahead.

ontroversy surrounds almost
every bill that is proposed at
the state government level. If
the actual effects of the bill dont come
in question, then the partisanship of
it, or the motivation behind it, are
often scrutinized.
But a bill that was proposed recently
by state Sen. Richard Codey doesnt fit
into that category, at least in the world
according to us.
Codeys bill would expand New Jer-
seys distracted driving law to include
drivers who are temporarily stopped
whether in a traffic jam, red light or
stop sign. Basically, it would ban all
use of a cell phone while a person is
seated in the drivers seat of a vehicle.
The bill would also require the written
drivers test to include questions on
distracted driving.
When explaining his position on the
bill, Codey referred to the states DUI
law: If youre at a red light and youre
drunk, youre DUI, he said.
Makes perfect sense to us. Drivers
can be distracted, and cause major ac-
cidents, even if they are temporarily
stopped. How many times have you
seen other drivers because youve
never done this, right? hurriedly ac-
celerate at a light after they realize,
when they look up from their phone,
that the light has turned green? Situa-
tions like this can cause accidents.
Opponents of the bill, if they can be
considered this, are saying that the
true motives behind the bill are ques-
tionable. Even Codey admitted to this,
at least partially, saying that the real
aim of the bill is to put New Jersey in
line with federal standards for the Dis-
tracted Driving Grant Program. Cur-
rently, the states law isnt in line with
these standards, so it doesnt qualify
for grants.
To that, we say: Who cares?
Who cares if the motive behind en-
hancing New Jerseys distracted driv-
ing law is to receive federal grant
money? That money would be put to
use to educate and discourage people
from driving distracted.
Its not Codeys fault, or the Legisla-
tures fault, that the federal govern-
ment requires certain standards to re-
ceive grant money. Since that money
will go to good use, we should do what
is necessary to get it.
The only thing that should matter
here is the safety of those on the road,
and this bill enhances that safety.

The annual Thanksgiving football game
between Lenape and Shawnee high schools
wont be the only football played by Mt.
Laurel kids that day.
Nearby at Harrington Middle School,
more than 100 kids are expected to take the
field in the sixth annual Turkey Bowl.
The game has become part of the cul-
ture in the Mt. Laurel community. The
game started in 2008 after Marianne
Makailas son, Ryan, asked why he could-
nt play football with his friends on
Thanksgiving.
He was just curious on holidays why
you only got to see your family and not
your friends, Marianne said.
Ryan began to talk to his friends about
having a game on Thanksgiving morning.
In 2008, 15 kids showed up to play a touch
football game. It was a hit for everyone.
To be honest, we thought wed only
have five kids come, Marianne said. Now
we have about 100 kids and siblings play.
The event has grown by leaps and
bounds since then. Marianne said that
Ryan is very sociable, and that by word of
mouth, the popularity of this event has ex-
ploded.
It really took off, Marianne said.
(Ryan) makes friends with everyone and
he just kept going and going at it.
The event has now evolved into more
than just a football game. Mariannes other
son, Marc, had cerebral palsy. She said that
she understands people with special needs
and what they go through.
So as the game entered its third year,
Marianne decided to add a fundraiser for a
needy family.
We had a friend who was in similar sit-
uation with cerebral palsy, she said. So
we thought we could make a little bit of a
difference.
The fundraising effort has taken on as
much of a life as the game. That little bit of
difference Marianne mentioned has gone a

The series takes a new ap-
proach to reality TV by spotlight-
ing an educational environment
that hopefully encourages stu-
dents to grow and learn as well as
push them toward excellence.
We Teach hopes to give viewers
an inside look at what it takes to
be a teacher who positively im-
pacts the lives of students.
The technicians ride in the
cars with the teachers in the
morning on their way to work,
Potter said. They have discus-
sions with the teachers about
what they are thinking and how
they think the day is going to go.
They are with them as they teach
all day until they return home at
night.
The show is filmed by LDTV
staff and sponsored by Metlife Re-
sources-John A. Costello, a certi-
fied financial planner. The pro-
gram highlights teachers from a
variety of departments so differ-
ent curriculums and challenges
can be featured.
Half of a teachers day makes
up an episode. Thats how much
content there is. Its our only pro-
gramming that students arent
able to participate in as they
would need to be out of class liter-
ally all day, Potter said.
LDTV first began broadcasting
in 1992, allowing students to learn
television production techniques
and assist in the production of
district programs. LDTV also of-
fers LRHSD students the opportu-
nity to broadcast sports, awards
ceremonies, graduations and
other events with the use of a mo-
bile production truck. The pro-
duction truck is a fully function-
al, professional-level production
studio that has covered various
events around the district and the
state.
We certainly didnt have any-
thing like that when I was in high
school, Potter said with a laugh.
The opportunities for students
to learn are incredible. We get so
many nice emails after they grad-
uate saying how much further
along they are than other stu-
dents at the college level because
of their time with LDTV.

Honoring veterans in Mt. Laurel
The Burlington County Li-
brary System is collecting new
pajamas and new books for chil-
dren in need, many of whom have
been abused or abandoned and
are hoping to be adopted.
The donations, which may be
dropped off at the county library
in Westampton and the branch fa-
cilities through Nov. 30, are being
accepted for the Pajama Program,
a charity that hopes to contribute
to a warmer, more loving environ-
ment for children at their most
vulnerable. Living in group
homes, shelters and temporary
housing, these youngsters are
often shuffled from one place to
another, and many have never ex-
perienced the simple comfort of
having a loving mother or father
tuck them in at bedtime.
To date, the Pajama Program
has given away more than two
million pajamas and books to
needy children, and library pa-
trons are being asked to lend
their support to this ongoing ef-
fort. Donations of new, unused
pajamas and new books for chil-
dren up to 18-years-old are being
accepted. Please drop off all dona-
tions in the collection boxes that
have been set up in the lobby of
the County Library in Westamp-
ton and at the branch facilities in
Bordentown, Cinnaminson, Eve-
sham, Maple Shade, Pemberton,
Medford and Riverton.

Local black belt karate stu-
dent David Hyman competed for
Team USA at the 2013 NAFMA
World Championships on
Nov. 8 and 9 in Port of Spain,
Trinidad.
The 2013 World Champi-
onships featured competitors
from 11 countries who competed
in point sparring, forms,
weapons and stick fighting.
Team USA was comprised of 20
members.
Hyman lives in Mt. Laurel
and is a third-degree black belt
at the National Karate Institute
in Moorestown. Hyman attends
Lenape High School where his
favorite subjects are mathemat-
ics and history. He competed in
forms, weapons and point spar-
ring. He began karate at 3 years
old. He is now 15 years
old.
Training at National Karate
Institute helps me be more disci-
plined, more physically fit and
has become a way of life for me,
Hyman said, and I have made
positive friendships as well.
The following information was
provided by the Mt. Laurel Police
Department.
On Nov. 8, at 6:26 p.m. an un-
known masked suspect entered
the Beneficial Bank and demand-
ed money. The suspect wore a
mask and brandished a handgun.
He is described as male, medium
build, between 5-foot, 7-inches
and 5-foot, 10-inches tall. The sus-
pect left with an undisclosed
amount of money. He was last
seen on foot going toward Hart-
ford Road.

Police seek publics help to
identify alleged bank thief
The following information was
provided by the Mt. Laurel Police
Department.
A resident of the 100 block of
East St. Andrews Drive reported
a subject attempted to enter
their home through an unlocked
rear sliding door while they
were home. When they confront-
ed the suspect, described as a
male wearing a dark colored
hooded sweatshirt, the suspect
fled on foot to a vehicle. The
suspects vehicle was described as
a dark Honda or Toyota,
which drove off toward Ramble-
wood Parkway. The incident
occurred at 12:06 p.m. on Nov. 6.
Entry was not gained to the
residence and nothing was
taken.
A resident of the 100 block of
Canterbury Road reported two
separate incidents over the past
two weeks of criminal mischief
to their vehicle. Two windows on
a 2006 Ford work truck were bro-
ken during the overnight hours
on two separate occasions. The
vehicle had been parked in front
of the residence. The damage to
each window was estimated at
$200 each. The most recent inci-
dent occurred sometime between
5:30 p.m. Nov. 5 and 6:30 a.m. Nov.

The Lenape High School Hero
Club is granting a wish for one of
its classmates.
Eric Ebo Eberling is being
treated for recurrent bone cancer.
Eberling was diagnosed in his
sophomore year and the doctors
in the United States have run out
of options for him. He is undergo-
ing alternative treatment in Ger-
many, which is very expensive
and not covered by insurance.
There is a bowling fundraiser
called "Bowl for Ebo" on Sunday,
Nov. 24 at Laurel Lanes in Maple
Shade. All proceeds will go to
Eberling's medical expenses.

$1,200 was raised during last
years game. That was enough for
seven families in need to buy
Christmas gifts for their children.
We figured it would be a good
idea since everybody was there,
she said. Most people are very
fortunate to have what they have.
If everyone gave a dollar or two, it
could really go a long way.
The fundraiser will return in
2013, with the money raised going
to the family of Eric Ebo Eber-
ling. Eberling has a recurrent
bone cancer for which his family
had to fly to Germany to get him
treatment. Ryan had been on a
team with Eberlings younger
brother.
While a bigger fundraiser is
being held on Nov. 24 at Laurel
Lanes for Eberling, Marianne
thought they could send money
raised at the Turkey Bowl to the
family as well.
I met them about a year ago,
Marianne said. The people in the
community are doing something
bigger for them. But this is some-
thing on the smaller scale.
The fundraiser may be on a
smaller scale, but there is nothing
small about the Turkey Bowl. It
has become a fixture of Mt. Lau-
rels Thanksgiving.
Its definitely a community
tradition, Marianne said. Peo-
ple look forward to it and its
something that we always do.
